2005 took place between the 26th of August and the 28th. The headliners were The Pixies, Foo Fighters and Iron Maiden, with The Killers, Kings Of Leon and Marilyn Manson as co-headliners. The year saw a fair mix of old and new, with Rock veterans such as Iggy & The Stooges, Dinosaur Jr, The Charlatans and Echo And The Bunnymen placed on the bill with newer Indie bands including Razorlight, Kasabian, Bloc Party and The Killers. The year also saw the Main Stage having a change of image, with a more rounded look to it instead of the standard rectangular shape that had dominated previous festivals.

- The Radio 1 stage was renamed the NME/Radio 1 Stage. The Concrete Jungle also went under the name of the Radio 1 Lockup.
- Fightstar, Charlie Simpson's (Busted fame) new band, suffered a barrage of bottles and other forms of rubbish thrown at them in the first few minutes of their NME/Radio 1 Stage set. However, they managed to win the crowd over, arguably because of the scarse litter in the tent.
- Jimmy Eat World, originally alotted a late afternoon slot on the Saturday at Reading and Sunday at Leeds pulled out and were replaced with Dinosaur Jr. Other pull-outs included Transplants and Fall Out Boy.
- My Chemical Romance and Bullet For My Valentine played at Leeds and Reading on the same day, due to them playing at the VMAs on the 28th of August. Bullet For My Valentine opened the Main Stage at Leeds and played high up in the Radio 1/NME Stage at Reading, and vice-versa with My Chemical Romance.
- The rakes frontman, Alan Donahue, invited members of Maximo Park, Art Brut, Towers Of London and Bloc Party to assist him singing their song 22 Grand Job, due to him suffering a sore throat.
