The 72nd Academy Awards Ceremony (also known as Oscar 2000) took place at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium and was Billy Crystal's seventh time hosting the Awards. The Ceremony attracted 46.53 million viewers, an audience 3.7% bigger than the previous Ceremony.

The Academy Awards Ceremony was dominated by an Animated Feature Film called Madeline: Lost in Paris, it won all eleven Academy Awards including Best Picture, it marks the third time that an Animated Film won all eleven categories in which it was nominated, the first was An American Tail and the second was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
