QUESTION: As of 6/25, many jobs for AY 2008-2009 being advertised. When can these begin to be posted here? Any insider info? Where are these advertised? HR sites for individual colleges and universities. Yes, when are we starting to post this fall's jobs? New page??

Okay! Here's a new page for AY 2008-2009! Start posting jobs NOW: english_literature_jobs_for_ay_2008-2009

Q: Are there any pages for world lit positions? There is a comp_lit page, but it's kind of sparse. Some World Lit jobs are also listed below on this page.

LIKE THE LUCKY FOLKS IN THE RHET-COMP LAND, CAN WE ALSO LIST STARTING SALARY RANGE BY ROUGH GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION, TEACHING LOAD AND THE KIND OF UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE?

How about just adding the link to the page already up in Rhet-Comp? This info shouldn't be that different between the 2 fields: Rhet-Comp starting_salaries No, there's a substantial difference, and adding the lit. salaries into the Rhet Comp area screws up the data (am I the only one who's compared the two lists and noticed that there really is no difference, and in fact, this year the lit salaries skew a little higher than the r/c ones?)

Okay. Thanks for creating the separate page: English Literature Starting Salaries

Question: Is it considered inappropriate to name people who accepted offers at different schools? I've received a few rejection letters that name the candidate...Does this mean that this is information is now 'common knowledge'? Or are there actual reasons to refrain from making such postings?

Con: I don't know. . . I personally haven't gotten a letter that "named" an accepting candidate. My personal feeling is that I would prefer to avoid naming people, b/c I could imagine scenarios in which it might create problems for individuals if somehow the info wasn't accurate, or was misunderstood, etc. I guess I would ask: Why do you think you need to post names? Would you like someone else to post your name here if you accepted a particular job? Maybe depends on the job . .?

Pro: On the Classics page people are in some cases posting the names of people who have accepted offers and there seems to be no complaints on that page about the practice.

Con: Q: Does it help to know that a particular someone beat you out of a job?

Pro: A: I can't speak for others, but I'm just interested (on a professional level) to know who ended up where, and who my future peers/collaborators might be. The classics model looks completely sensible. Why not adopt the practice here?

Con: Counter-A: As someone mentioned above, this could be problematic if the information published here is not 100% accurate. While it would certainly be interesting to know who ended up where, and such information could be useful, I feel the risks outweigh the benefits. (Besides, you'll be able to find out through dept. webpages in the fall.)

Pro: Another voice 1: I vote for putting the names on the wiki. The wiki's purpose is to give more information on a mystified process. Besides, if the departments announced the name in their official letters, then the info is circulating already anyway, and it was the departments' decision to put the info out there through the letter.

Another voice 2: I second the motion of adding the names. WHY THE PARANOIA, FOLKS?! We all know the market's tough. I think we should be happy for people and congratulate them when they do well.

Yet Another (childish) Voice: Bwahahaha. I've taken the liberty of adding a few names to this wiki (I've used bullet-pointed additions). NOTE: I only include names that have been publicly disclosed already: e.g., the rejection letter names the person or the person has disclosed in another venue.

Con: enjoy your sour grapes. All that you need to know is that someone of the thousands of candidates out there is better than you for the job. Isn't that really enough? What is it that you think you can learn by knowing an exact name of who is better than you?

Pro: I am really unclear as to why people would think that posting names is either evil or sour grapes. It would seem to me that it is just putting out in the open, for anyone who is interested (and I assume that everyone who is checking this page is interested), who got what job.

Con: But what makes it your "right" to put it out there? If people want to post where they got a job, then great. But let's not impose that on them!

What about the folks who have applied for other jobs but haven't told their own department yet that they are leaving? It's not someone else's responsibility to "out" them

Pro: I really don't see what all the fuss is about re: the names. If you look in this page, the only people who have been named are people who have already been 'outed' by their own announcement or institution itself.

How about making this distinction?: Names announced formally by dept or publicly by accepting candidate: okay to post Names obtained by gossip or hearsay: inappropriate to post

I would hate for someone's privacy to be compromised, i.e., the situation in which the candidate has not yet announced her decision to her current institution. I think putting out names that have been officially announced by schools or in letters is fine. I really hope everyone is as responsible as possible in terms of not prematurely announcing names or even announcing incorrect names.

Con: Perhaps it would be better to let those who accepted jobs decide whether to post their names here, or not. A name announced in a rejection letter is not tantamount to a public online announcement, after all. Leave it up to those who accepted the posts. If they don't post their own names on this website, leave well enough alone.

Note: All names have been deleted. Look it up on websites in the fall or ask around at conferences, folks.

British, Children's and Interdisciplinary are all back. Thank you!

Now that we're back from MLA, let us know where you got calls for flybacks!

[i'm hoping it's okay to delete all the "people, you didn't get a job" commentary]

N. B. Don't use double hyphens when editing the page; they will strike the rest of the text. Double asterisks have a similar effect; they lead to bold text.

What did this "kind" rejection letter say? So far I've gotten terse, cold ones. :( - It said something to the effect that they were overwhelmed by the number of well-qualified applicants and that they were expecting several more positions to open up in the next few years as "oldtimers headed out to pasture," so they sincerely hoped we would consider applying again. My rejection from Cornell might as well have had dry ice in the envelope it was so cold.

Pomona College (new listing 3/26): VAP in Medieval Lit. Deadline: April 6 Where is this position advertised? I didn't see it on CHE or MLA, nor on Pomona's HR site. It was circulated by email on a dept. listserv as an "early version" of a job announcement. I haven't seen it advertised anywhere else yet either. Maybe they just haven't posted it yet or perhaps they're not interested in advertising it that widely? It looked like a real job. Considering that they started two searches in the fall that resulted in failed searches, I would be suspicious of any such discretely advertised job posting from them! I'm pretty sure it's a real posting for a sabbatical replacement; it just wasn't advertized widely.

Southern Illinois University, Carbondale Deadline: Feb. 2 Dossier request via email, Feb 8. Dossier and writing sample requested via email, 2/13 Dossier and writing sample request via email, 2/7 (2) campus visits? I received a rejection letter for the Irish position for which I did not apply. Then on 4/11, I receive an e-mail informing me that was an error and that I am still being considered for the position. Same here; it must have been a list mix-up. I got the same thing (rejection letter for Irish + apology/clarification), but during the week of 4/2. I emailed to ask what the timeframe for the search was, but haven't heard back as of 4/11. I also received a rejection letter for the Irish position, and then today, 4/11, an email saying I was still being considered for the position. Since this is almost two months after the dossier requests appear to have gone out, I find that hard to believe. I received the same letter and email during the week of 4/2.
