Narrator: "Bart had been working in the coal yards. He was feeling bored and lonely with only the silly goombas for company."
Bart's Driver: "Cheer up, Bart."
Narrator: "Said his driver."
Bart's Driver: "Mayor Adam West has told me that we must be here again tomorrow. We've just got to get the best of a bad situation."
Bart: "I'll try, sir."
Narrator: "Sighed Bart.
Next morning, Bart puffed back to the coal mines. When he arrived, the goombas started teasing him."
Bart: "Bart, Bart, yellow and small, he's no use to us at all, around the yards he'll puff and blow, but on the hills, he's oh so slow!"
Bart: "Be quiet!"
Narrator: "Then he took the goombas to the coal hopper to be loaded up.
Bart still felt glum, but said nothing as he puffed up the steep incline to the yards at the top of the hill.
He parked his goombas, and then set off back down to the mines. Not even the cheerful sight of Ten Cents the Tug could bring a smile to Bart's face."
Ten Cents: "What's the matter, Bart?"
Narrator: "Asked Bart."
Bart: "Nothing exciting ever happens. That's the matter."
Narrator: "Sighed Bart."
Bart: "It's just, coal, coal, coal! And goombas, goombas, goombas! I'm bored, bored, bored!"
Ten Cents: "Excitement is surprising."
Narrator: "Observed Ten Cents."
Ten Cents: "You never know when it'll happen. Otherwise, it wouldn't be exciting. Tootle peep!"
Bart: "It would be surprising if something surprising happened."
Narrator: "Muttered Bart.
Later, he stopped by the water fountain for a drink."
Grandpa Dave: "Hello, Bart. How are things?"
Narrator: "Asked Grandpa Dave."
Narrator: "Replied Bart."
Grandpa Dave: "Well, why not have a few spins on a turntable? You'll like that."
Narrator: "Said Grandpa Dave."
Bart: "I think I'd just feel giddy."
Narrator: "Bart's driver interrupted."
Bart's Driver: "Stop gossiping, you two!"
Grandpa Dave: "Cheer up, Bart. You'll soon know more about goombas than any other TV character. That'll be exciting."
Narrator: "Called Grandpa Dave.
The goombas were still grumbling, and there was more of them than ever."
Goombas: "You much too small to pull all of us. We want another character that will be struggling up the hill all night! All night, all right, you can puff and blow, but on the hill, you're still too slow! Ha, ha!"
Bart: "S-Slow yourself!"
Narrator: "Stuttered Bart."
Goombas: "Temper, temper."
Narrator: "Giggled the goombas. Bart decided just to carry on."
Bart's Driver: "Go to it, Bart!"
Narrator: "Shouted the driver, as they started to climb the hill. The goombas were still joking."
Goombas: "Too slow! More power! Here all night! Tomorrow too!"
Bart: "Be quiet!"
Narrator: "Said Bart angrily. Then, there was trouble. A rope broke."
Goombas: "Surprise, surprise! Catch us if you can!"
Bart: "Oh no!"
Narrator: "Cried Bart.
Bart's driver told the signalman, and the yard foreman told Mayor West what was happening."
Yard Foreman: "They're heading for the big hill. It'll slow them down, but they may roll back again, right into the village."
Narrator: "Said the foreman."
Mayor Adam West: "Then we'll just have to stop them, won't we?"
Narrator: "Said Mayor West firmly.
The chase was on.
As they approached the hill, they overtook the goombas. Mayor West and Ten Cents screeched to a halt, and waited for them near the top.
The hill slowed the goombas right down to a stand still. Then the men quickly put wooden blocks behind their feet so they couldn't roll backwards. The goombas were now secured.
Just then, Bart arrived."
Ten Cents: "Well, what do you think of that?"
Narrator: "Joked Ten Cents."
Ten Cents: "A good chase is always exciting."
Bart: "It was certainly a surprise."
Narrator: "Decided Bart."
Bart: "And you were right, Ten Cents. A really useful boy should never be surprised by surprise."
