[edit] Attracting the media coverage our problem deserves

  • Own an Apple 17inch G4 1.67Ghz PowerBook with the Dreaded “Bridget Riley” vertical lines screen defect?
  • Tired of being ignored, censored and censured by Apple Inc?
  • Want to help out in securing a global Display Repair Extension Program?
  • Then TUNE IN, READ ON and JOIN IN!

As Malcolm X put it, "I for one believe that if you give people a thorough understanding of what confronts them and the basic causes that produce it, they'll create their own program, and when the people create a program, you get action." I say it’s time for us to create a plan of action – so who’s with me?

[edit] Dalinian, AKA Tim Jones, has a plan and could use your help

From my experiences in grass-roots campaigning, I can confidently assert that one activity in which we can all play a part, with a relatively compact effort from each of us, yet yielding potentially high impact results, is a two phase Publicity Campaign. The more we get journalists to cover the censorship, censuring and silence scandal at Apple Inc, the greater the pressure there will be on Apple to act with honour in instigating the global Display Repair Extension Program we’d like to see.

Just remember that what gives this story legs now is the cover-up not the hardware problem. This is what the press will be interested in.

[edit] PHASE ZERO: MEDIA RELEASE COLLABORATION - Tue 29 May to Fri 01 Jun 07 - COMPLETED

With A Friend's point in mind, here's the final version of Media Release 1 from the Free Repair Campaign for Apple 17inch PowerBooks, entitled:

Note that in Adobe Reader, the web links and mailto:s therein should be clickable links. My thanks to kingmac who proof read an earlier version, highlighting typo errors, which have been corrected in this final version.

“What is hateful…is not rebellion but the despotism which induces the rebellion; what is hateful are not rebels but the men, who, having the enjoyment of power, do not discharge the duties of power; they are the men who, having the power to redress wrongs, refuse to listen to the petitioners that are sent to them.”
Wilfrid Laurier

[edit] PHASE ONE: ONLINE TECHNOLOGY MEDIA - begins Fri 01 Jun 07 - IN PROGRESS

If you own an afflicted PowerBooks, here's how you can help in Phase One:

  1. download our Media Release 1: Apple Inc Lets Down Loyal Customers with Censorship, Censuring & Silence (448KB PDF);
  2. seek out up to five journalist prospects (from the online tech media, for preference) who aren’t yet on our ACTION+: Publicity Contacts page (to avoid duplication), by online searching or real world research;
  3. add a list of those journalists and the media outlets they work for to our ACTION+: Publicity Contacts page (to avoid future duplication);
  4. send our Media Release 1 to all those one-to-five journalists, either online or by snail mail, and record the date of sending in the 'MR1 Sent' column of our ACTION+: Publicity Contacts page;
  5. encourage any other known folks with afflicted PowerBooks (or even friends, relatives, sympathisers, etc.) to do the same.

Here's the other components of Phase One, carried out by Dalinian.

  • I’ve uploaded a list of online technology journalists' contact details - some of whom I found have covered the 15inch PowerBook ‘white spots’ defect story - to our ACTION+: Publicity Contacts page, and sent our Media Release 1 to them on the date shown in the 'MR1 Sent' column.
  • I’ve uploaded our Media Release 1 to my free file hosting service, MediaMax:
  • I’ve posted a message to our three blogs (see Campaign Resources) containing a clickable link to this Wiki page.
  • I’ve also sent an email message to David Hudd, containing within the text of an email message I’ve asked him to kindly forward to all those folks who left a contact email address with him while signing up their afflicted PowerBook’s details at his 17inch “Bridget Riley” Powerbooks database website (please do so too, if you’ve not already registered your computer there - see ACTION - For All). In the contained message I ask folks with afflicted PowerBooks to take the steps mentioned above (ie: 1. download our Media Release 1 [...] to [...] 5. encourage any other known folks [...]).

[edit] PHASE TWO: NATIONAL CONSUMER CHAMPIONING MEDIA - beginning mid-late Jun 07

My hope is that by this concerted and organised collective action, we may generate a good deal of publicity for our cause, especially from online technology media outlets. This would serve us in good stead for the second phase, in which we shall target selected high profile general consumer championing media, like nationally famous periodicals and broadcast radio/TV programmes; for instance, in the UK: Which? Magazine, BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours, and BBC1’s Watchdog TV programme.

In doing so, our second Media Release can contain clickable links to the online technology media articles/features/podcasts/etc. generated in Phase One, thereby encouraging our selected general consumer championing journalists to see that this story ‘has legs’, as they say (ie: it’s worth their while investigating our plight because we have already met their fellow online tech media journalists’ publishability criteria).

And at some point in this process, we can but hope that Apple Inc will decide that the honourable way to make these stories ‘go away’ is to launch an investigation into the "Bridget Riley" vertical lines display defect, pending a global Display Repair Extension Program.

[edit] CLOSING THOUGHTS

Thanks for reading this far; hope that’s all clear enough for now. None of this is set in stone - we can discuss it publicly at Campaign Discussions#Publicity Campaign, and do please feel free to contact me with any questions, suggestions, recommendations, or loophole corrections - by leaving a message on my Wikia talk page or by email to tim_d_jone{at}yahoo.co.uk.
