The Ship of Fools Awards ceremony, created at the end of the 2006 school year by then Captain-elect Ryan "T-Rex" Garwood, is a yearly celebration to remember the jokes, laughs, shows, and most of all performers of the past year.

[edit] A Tradition Is Born

As a Fool concerned with tradition and leadership (even my first year) I often looked to my family for ideas to improve the group. Like many things in the Ship of Fools, I have borrowed traditions and concepts from my sister and the Miami Tower Players. This particular idea came to me when I was home on Spring Break, driving around with her. In her car was a crushed water bottle with markings on it, which was explained to me as a gag gift given to her (a senior leaving her improv troupe) during their awards ceremony. The way she described it really struck me as sentimental and memorable, and got me thinking of my time with the Ship of Fools. Later, I began work creating the Ship of Fools Awards as a sort of tribute to the seniors that were leaving the Ship, but had been friends, mentors, stage partners, and so much more to me. I meant to honor their humor and unique personalities, but also their friendship and help to me as a mere freshman. -Ryan "T-Rex" Garwood

[edit] "Graduating Seniors"

At the end of the 2006 school year, many Fools were departing (five of the dozen) for bigger and better things. On the awards presentation, Ryan grouped them all together and, for lack of a better term, labeled them all Graduating Seniors. Benji carefully pointed out that not a single one of them was actually a graduating senior:

  • Matt Dennig had been with the group for some time and was currently out of school, but lived in the area and still attended Ship of Fools events.
  • Ashley Kaufman was technically a Super Senior.
  • Paul Kuliniewicz completed his Masters degree as a graduate student.
  • Benji Milanowski would continue with the group for one more year as a Nursing Student following the completion of his first degree.
  • Jeff Spanke, likewise, would continue on to graduate school at Purdue University, but was leaving the group.

To this day, the term "Graduating Senior" is used to tease Ryan and still describes departing Fools at the awards presentations, regardless of academic status.

[edit] Procedures

During the school year, photos, clips, and jokes are collected by the Captain (or whoever is in charge of the awards). The Fool responsible for the awards should not be leaving the group that year. Previous awards shows may be used as a template.

One week before the awards ceremony at the weekly business meeting, the Official Voting Ballot is distributed to the Fools, and collected shortly after, and totaled.

The Captain then compiles all the appropriate photos and names and completes the awards presentation for the following business meeting for the Ship of Fools. Snacks are typically served. A summary presentation typically follows on the final weekly meeting of the year.

[edit] Awards

Additionally, each year has a unique award crafted specifically for that particular year's jokes and crew. Numerous write-in awards are accepted, as well as the special Graduating Senior Awards.
