  • Berkeley (date unknown) Can anybody confirm this? I can. I know a person who got an interview and is already here at MLA. A. This is not true. Berkeley will not interview in this MLA! They are probably going to cancel the appointment. A. Berkeley is definitely interviewing. I just talked to a friend who is on the interviewing committee (it's the evening of the 27th now). I gotta say that these blatant lies about the Berkeley position are pretty annoying. Honestly, if you *think* you're competitive for such a position, and you're taking time out of your research agenda to post on a wiki (and lies at that), you're in for a rude awakening. To everybody else, good luck on your interviews!! The Berkeley position is a go. Deal. A. Berkeley's budget comes from the State of California. The State of California--like many other states this year--is cutting education spending across the board. Even though the DEPARTMENT may be continuing with the search, any appointment is ultimately "pending budgetary approval". This means that the UNIVERSITY may still cancel the position even as the search advances, including after campus visits. So ultimately, the position's existence depends on considerations beyond the Department's control. True, but even in times of crisis, there are certain departments that have a critical need just to fill overflowing classes. Berkeley Spanish is in such a situation.
  • Q: Does anyone know what sort of profile they were looking for? A: Given that they have 2 southern cone specialists, they did not interview any cono surenyos, even those that did indigenous issues. They are trying to fill (major gaps): colonial/Mexico and I believe the Caribbean. I could be wrong about the latter.
