China

Brandeis University: Asst. Professor, East Asian History with Chinese Specialization in any period (deadline 11-15-07; job description)

(2) AHA interview scheduled (12/07)
(3) Has anyone heard from them since the AHA interviews? Or does anyone know their timetable of the decision-making process? Thanks. (01/13/08)

Last I heard, they'd decided on a candidate who, by the time they got the offer out, had already taken another position. I'm not sure where this leaves the search, whether they're going to re-open or whether they're working down the list. (4/2/08) I heard from a friend who is a grad student at Brandeis that word is out that they have hired someone. Don't know any details, though. (This is pure grapevine, I'm not even an Asianist myself...) (4/10)

(1) Acknowledgement received - not interviewing at AHA (date: 11/10)
(2) Surprise unscheduled phone interview conducted (11/25)
(2) Phone interview completed (11/29)
     - Suprise interviews? Not very professional.
     - Not really. mine was scheduled in advance. I am not sure whether it was due to the
fact that different search committee members interviewed with different candidates.
     - The worst part is that some candidates were ambushed while others
had ample time to prepare. Not a level playing field.
     - Heard that some schools have used surprise interviews to make sure that they did not
miss some well qualified candidates in their shortlist for scheduled phone interviews.
But such surprise interviews tended to be much shorter than the 30 or 40-minutes interviews.
     - Yes, the problem is that some people had scheduled interviews and others had suprise interviews.
     - And how will cmte members compare notes?
     - If the surprise interviews were indeed used to pre-screen some candidates while others had already been shortlisted,
the former candidates would seem already to have been put in a separate category than the shortlisted ones. If so,
there was no need to compare notes for scheduled interviews.
 (3) Campus interview offer, not yet scheduled (12/10)

Has anyone scheduled (or done) interview with any of the Canadian schools recruiting China historians at all? It seems strange that there is no news from any of those schools yet even though U.S. schools with later deadlines have already finished phone interviews or scheduled AHA conference interviews. Thanks for sharing any info. if you do have.

     - Many Canadian schools interviewed at AHA last year. Basically they are on the same schedule as US schools.
     - Thanks.
     - Well, I stand corrected. Some Canadian schools that interviewed at AHA last year (Ex. UTSC) have gone straight to campus interviews this year. (This is because people dropped out of the UTSC search because they were offered other jobs first. UTSC was too slow last year and lost out. Other schools are pushing for earlier decisions to compete.)
