Attributes
From Scratchpad
The Baldur's Gate Series use a system based on 2nd Edition Dungeons and Dragons. The core of this system are 6 attributes that determine the most important strengths and weaknesses of everything from Goblins to Dragons.
In both Baldur's Gate I and II there are several items and such that can modify a characters attributes. In Baldur's Gate I this is done by manuals and tomes, in Baldur's Gate II by some of the trials in Hell and in Watcher's Keep by a machine that can give bonuses and penalties to attributes.

[edit] Description
- Strength: Your physical strength and muscle. How well and how hard you can hit the enemy in close combat is determined by this attribute, as well as the amount of weight you can carry and how good you are at bashing doors and chests.
- Constitution: Toughness and resistance to various things depends on this attribute. A high Toughness might give extra Hit Points or a higher chance to survive being raised from the dead.
- Dexterity: Agility, nimbleness, hand-eye coordination and such. Your armour class can be modified by this, as well as your chance to hit with ranged weapons. Thieves use this for their abilities as well.
- Intelligence: Wit, cunning and learning capabilities fall under Intelligence. It is used to determine what level of spells a Wizard can learn, how many spells he can learn and how much of a chance he has of learning them. It also gives a Lore bonus or penalty.
- Wisdom: This determines common sense and judgement among things. Priests can get bonus spells from having high Wisdom or a chance their spells fail if having low Wisdom. Mind-affecting spells have a lower chance of affecting those with higher Wisdom, and it modifies Lore as well.
- Charisma: Leadership capabilities fall under Charisma, as well as the more obvious likeability of a character. High Charisma makes everyone friendlier and items at stores cheaper.
[edit] Baldur's Gate I
These are the attribute-boosting manuals and tomes in Baldur's Gate I. You can find one of each except for the Tome of Understanding of which there are 3 available. They are used as a potion and disappear after one use. They can also be imported using CLUAConsole.

On top of this, the Machine of Lum the Mad on level 4 of Watcher's Keep can give a bonus to each attribute to the character who pushes the right buttons, or a penalty to Dexterity or Intelligence if pushing the wrong ones. There are 8 other effects for pushing the wrong buttons so there is a 10% chance this occurs. For more information go to the page about the Machine of Lum the Mad.
