Phoenix Wright is the main character of the first three Ace Attorney games, and as a result, he is the defense attorney in twelve cases. He was also the defendant in State v. Wright (2014) and State v. Wright (2026), as well as the creator of the Jurist System, of which he is the Chairman in State v. Misham.

Before the Badge[]

Grade School[]

Phoenix Wright attended grade school with Miles Edgeworth and Larry Butz. He knew Larry from before he even went to school.

Turnabout Memories[]

Phoenix Wright was an art student at Ivy University, and happened to be in the District Courthouse Reading Room on the day Atty. Diego Armando was poisoned by Dahlia Hawthorne. Phoenix was studying law on the side, and on the date of the incident he bumped into Dahlia. She gave him the bottle necklace she used to poison Diego, and shortly after, they began "dating". Unbeknownst to Phoenix, Dahlia had been a murder suspect eight months before. The girl he thought he was dating turned out to be Dahlia's twin sister, Iris Hawthorne, who had been sent to retrieve the necklace. She even made him a pink sweater with a large "P" on it. When Dahlia discovered Iris falling in love with Phoenix, she decided to try to kill him with some tainted Coldkiller X.

Phoenix's trip through his legal career started in 2014, two years before he became a defense attorney. On April 9, he met with schoolmate Doug Swallow (a student he considered a "stuck-up British wannabe") outside Ivy University's Pharmacology Building. Doug had been dating Dahlia until eight months before. When Doug told him to stop seeing Dahlia for his own safety, Phoenix got angry and pushed him then left. When he came back later, Doug was dead. Phoenix was arrested, and two days later in State v. Wright, he was charged with the murder of Doug Swallow. Atty. Mia Fey took the case and got him acquitted. During the case, after repeatedly trying to defend Dahlia, Phoenix swallowed the bottle necklace (nearly mirroring Terry Fawles' suicide in court a year before). The real villain turned out to be Dahlia. When she failed to kill him with poisoned Coldkiller X, she instead killed Doug. When Phoenix was found not guilty, he began to study law more seriously.

Year One[]

The First Turnabout[]

Over the next two years, Phoenix studied law, passed the bar exam, and began working at Fey & Co. Law Offices. His first case as a defense attorney was in State v. Butz against Atty. Winston Payne, the "Rookie Killer", in which he was to defend his childhood friend Larry Butz, who was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Cindy Stone. Phoenix was able to prove that Larry was innocent, meanwhile correctly accusing the murderer as Frank Sahwit. The murder weapon, revealed to be a statue clock, was made by Larry. He made a second clock and gave it to Mia as thanks. This was the only case in which Phoenix worked with a living Mia Fey.

Turnabout Sisters[]

Only a month after his first victory in court, Phoenix Wright was forced to defend Maya Fey in State v. Fey, after his mentor and Maya's older sister, Maya, was found dead in her law office.

Bridge to the Turnabout[]

State v. Hawthorne

Phoenix had to face numerous prosecutors over his career. His first trial was against the lawyer who tried to get him convicted a few years ago, Winston Payne. When he won, he had to face off against childhood friend Miles Edgeworth. Then, when Edgeworth was charged with murder, he had to face off against a 40 year veteran, Manfred von Karma.

Nearly a year later, with Edgeworth dropping off the face of the Earth, and von Karma behind bars, Phoenix would challenge the prodigy prosecutor Franziska von Karma in the court. And, again, a year later, he faced off against a new prosecutor, Godot.

His last opponent in the courtroom was Klavier Gavin. During a trial to defend Zakku Arumajiki, he used a piece of fake evidence, which Klavier managed to prove was fake. Zakku was found guilty, and Phoenix was disbarred. He would not step into a courtroom again for the next 7 years, until he once again found himself at the feet of Prosecutor Payne in the courtroom.

Phoenix suffered 2 defeats in his career, though none of them could be considered his fault. His first defeat came at the hands of Miles Edgeworth, at the end of State vs. Engarde, Matt demanded that the judge find him guilty, so that he would not be tracked down and killed by a hitman that he had hired. He also lost against Klavier Gavin when he presented a piece of fake evidence that he had no idea was a fake.

Phoenix has one daughter. This came as a shock to everyone in court during State vs. Wright, 7 years after the conclusion of the third game. It was discovered that he adopted the daughter of Zakku Arumajiki, after he was found guilty, then vanished into thin air.

Phoenix Falls[]

Before the trial of State v. Enigmar even began, Shadi Enigmar originally had Atty. Kristoph Gavin as a defense attorney, of whom Shadi did not approve. In order to "prove" his strength, Kristoph commissioned Drew Misham for a piece of fake evidence for a sum of $100,000. When Shadi decided to use Phoenix as his attorney instead, Kristoph told Atty. Klavier Gavin the details of the forged evidence, making him believe Phoenix ordered it. When Phoenix brought out the fake evidence, a diary entry belonging to Magnifi Gramarye, Klavier sprung the trap, and Phoenix was disbarred, for using forged evidence.

After the incident, Phoenix turned the Wright & Co. Law Offices into the Wright Talent Agency at the request of Trucy Enigmar. Phoenix spends the next seven years playing piano and poker at the Borscht Bowl Club, all the while collecting evidence to prove the guilt of Atty. Kristoph Gavin, and his own innocence.

Phoenix Rises[]

Turnabout Corner[]

Turnabout Serenade[]

Turnabout Succession[]

Miscellany[]

Phoenix Wright attributes his becoming a lawyer to several people, for various reasons. He credits it to Larry Butz and Miles Edgeworth for defending him when he was a schoolchild, to Mia Fey for defending him as an adult, and to Miles Edgeworth for his becoming a prosecuting attorney who became so attached to his work Phoenix felt he had to save him.

Phoenix was originally an art student at Ivy University, studying law on the side. His brush with the law in 2014's State v. Wright led him to study law more thoroughly.

In a phone call between Atty. Mia Fey and her sister Maya Fey, they talk about Phoenix's first time in court. After Maya says she'd love to have Phoenix as an attorney if she got in trouble, Mia says "I think you might want to wait... give him three more years." Three years later, Phoenix was the primary defense attorney in State v. Hawthorne, a case involving the murder of Misty Fey, where Maya was quickly suggested as the killer. Phoenix got Iris Hawthorne (Maya's cousin) acquitted and kept Maya from being indicted.

During his years as an attorney, Phoenix and Maya frequented Eldoon's Noodles, a 14th-generation noodle shack run by the father of Guy Eldoon.

The same year Phoenix passed the bar exam, his eventual pupil Apollo Justice's and adopted daughter Trucy Enigmar's mother Thalassa Gramarye is shot and loses her memory and sight.

Because he felt the law was too rigidly opposed to possibility versus decisive evidence, Phoenix pushes to involve, and eventually creates and chairs the Jurist System. Six unanimous votes determine a defendant's verdict.
