[edit] Backstory
The story of the game takes place between those of Shin Megami Tensei I and II. The game is set in post-apocalyptic Japan, where Tokyo was destroyed in 202X and the surviors began construction of a massive tower, Shinjuku Babel.Demonic forces run rampant around the world.
--critique: Actually the story appears to be more in line with the universe of Megami Tensei II (note the omition of Shin, which is also omitted from Imagine's offcial title) -- However elements of the parallel Shin Megami Tensei time-line are prevalent as well (these include graphics of past heroes and heroines of the SMT titles, as well as the Gaian and Messian factions (including the Messian Cathedral)
[edit] Devil Busters
Just like the protagonists of the previous Shin Megami Tensei games, you belong to an organization called the Devil Busters, and it is your job to defeat the devils plaguing the land. You also have the ability to summon and command devils by using a device called a COMP.
--critique: Actually "Devil Busters" only exist within the MT2 universe, and only within a featured VR video game played by protagonists of the MT2 universe (which is also titled Devil Busters) -- There are also aspects of Imagine which tie in closely to the circumstances surrounding MT2's DB video game.

An underground shelter, where the survivors of the Tokyo holocaust live. Having lost their homes, people have taken residence in this nuclear shelter and since then a city has been built inside it. This is where the player starts his journey.

Built as a part of the "Tokyo Restoration Project", this giant tower is the new hub oh humanity, it also serves as the headquarters for the Devil Buster organisation.
[edit] Obelisks
After the Tokyo holocaust, three mysterious pillars appeared. People have taken to calling them "Obelisks". These pillars emit power and change their surroundings rapidly.
>The Nakano obelisk has spurred massive growth in the region and created a forest
>The Ichigaya obelisk has triggered the erruption of lava in the region.
>The Shibuya obelisk is linked to the appearance of mysterious crystals in the area.

An Innocent is an android, created by the survivors of the Tokyo holocaust, these machines are built in an underground facility called the "Innocent Plant", located under Shinjuku Babel, and are used as the main workforce for the restoration of Tokyo.

--thoughts: Actually Innocent's are most likely a kind of Bodyconian, a type of devil possessed android which mimics the memories of a lost human spirit/soul. Bodyconians first appeared in MT2 and also appear in SMT1&2 and are featured prominently in one SMT1 scenario, where the hero's childhood love interest is discovered in future Tokyo after the devil apocalypse to've been preserved in youth in the form of a Bodyconian (The origins of the word Bodyconian are highly speculative. The best explanation so far may be a play on a kind of Japanese slang word which sounds like "Body-con", which is a kind of marathon dance off -- a Bodyconian being one who participates in the dance off)
--furthermore: Innocent's might be a new Neutral faction alongside the Gaians and Messians. However so far the term appears to be reserved for these white haired broken tongued androids. However Azura and her brother Setsu seem to be next generation Innocents which appear to be human in every sense and depended upon by the Devil Buster organization.
