The programme began on November 23rd 1963 with part one of An Unearthly Child

It was originally cancelled in December 1989 with part three of Survival

It returned briefly in 1996 with a TV movie just known as The Movie or Doctor Who

It returned again to our screens in May 2005 with the episode Rose and is sitll going strong, two years later.
