- (The Thomas Season 5 intro soon follows and we begin Toby The Tram Engine)
- George Carlin: Toby is a tram engine. He has cowcatchers and side plates and doesn't look like a steam engine at all. He takes from farms and villages to the main line and is cheerful to everyone he meets. He has a coach called Henrietta who has seen better days.
- Henrietta: It's not fair at all.
- George Carlin: She grumbles remembering she used to be full and nine cars would rattle behind her. Now there were only 3 or four for the farms and factories send their goods mostly by truck. Toby is always careful. The cars, buses and trucks often had accidents. Toby hasn't had an accident for years. But the buses are crowded and Henrietta is empty.
- (Toby's bell rings)
- George Carlin: A lady and a stout gentleman stood on Toby's platform. He was of course Sir Topham Hatt. But Toby didn't noticed yet.
- Children: Come on, grandfather.
- George Carlin: Cried the children.
- Children: Do look at this engine.
- Sir Topham Hatt: That's a tram engine, Stephen.
- George Carlin: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
- Bridget: Is it electric?
- George Carlin: Asked Bridget.
- Toby: Whoosh!
- George Carlin: Hissed Toby.
- Stephen: Shh!
- George Carlin: Said her brother.
- Stephen: You've offended him.
- Bridget: But trams are electric, aren't they?
- Sir Topham Hatt: They are mostly, and this is a steam tram.
- Children: May we go in it, grandfather, please?
- Sir Topham Hatt: Stop!
- George Carlin: Said Sir Topham Hatt to the conductor. They all scrambled into Henrietta.
- Henrietta: Hip-hip hooray!
- George Carlin: Chanted Henrietta. But Toby didn't sing.
- Toby: Electric indeed! Electric indeed!
- George Carlin: He snorted. He was proud of being a steam tram.
- Sir Topham Hatt: What is your name?
- George Carlin: Asked Sir Topham Hatt.
- Toby: Toby, sir.
- George Carlin: Thank you, Toby, for a very nice ride.
- Toby: Thank you, sir.
- George Carlin: Said Toby. He felt better now.
- Toby: This gentleman...
- George Carlin: He thought.
- Toby: ...is a gentleman who knows how to speak to engines.
- George Carlin: The children came every day for two weeks. Sometimes they rode with the conductor, sometimes in empty cars. On the last day of all the driver invited them into his cab. All were sorry when they had to go away and Sir Topham Hatt and his family thanked everyone.
- Toby: Come again soon.
- George Carlin: Replied Toby.
- Children: We will, we will.
- George Carlin: Called the children. And they waved till Toby was out of sight. The months passed. Toby had few cars and fewer passengers.
- Driver: Our last day, Toby.
- George Carlin: Said his driver one morning.
- Driver: The manager says we must close tomorrow.
- George Carlin: That day, everyone will have a chance of a last ride. The passengers joked and sang, but Toby and his driver wish they wouldn't.
- Passengers: Goodbye, Toby.
- George Carlin: Said the passengers afterwards.
- Passengers: We're sorry your line was closing down.
- Toby: So am I.
- George Carlin: Sighed Toby.
- Toby: Nobody wants me.
- George Carlin: Toby thought and went unhappily to sleep. Next morning, the shed was flung open and old Toby woke with a start to his driver waving a piece of paper at him.
- Driver: Wake up, Toby!
- George Carlin: He shouted excitely.
- Driver: The mail has just arrived and there's a letter for us from the stout gentleman! Maybe it's good news.
- (A segment of Toby occurs and we begin Thomas Breaks The Rules)
- George Carlin: There's the line to a quarry at the end of Thomas' branch. It goes to some distance along the road. Thomas was very careful to whistle here in case anyone was coming. Early one morning, a large policeman was sitting close to the line. Thomas liked policemen. He had been a great friend of the officer who had just retired.
- Thomas: Peep! Peep!
- George Carlin: He whistled.
- Thomas: Good morning.
- George Carlin: Thomas expected that the new officer would be friendly too. But was sorry to see that he didn't look friendly at all. He was red in the face and very cross.
- Policeman: Disgraceful!
- George Carlin: He spluttered.
- Policeman: I didn't sleep a wink last night. It was so quiet, and now engines come whistling suddenly behind me.
- Thomas: I'm sorry, sir.
- George Carlin: Said Thomas.
- Thomas: I only said good morning.
- George Carlin: The policeman pointed to Thomas.
- Policeman: Where's your cowcatchers?
- George Carlin: He asked.
- Thomas: But I don't catch cows, sir.
- Policeman: Don't be funny.
- George Carlin: Snapped the policeman. He looked at Thomas' wheels.
- Policeman: No side plates either.
- George Carlin: And he wrote in his notebook.
- Policeman: Engines goin on public roads must have their wheels covered and a cowcatcher in front to protect people and animals from being dragged under the wheels if they stray under the line. You haven't so you are dangerous.
- Driver: Rubbish.
- George Carlin: Said Thomas' driver.
- Driver: We've been along here hundreds of times and never had an accident.
- Policeman: That makes it worse.
- George Carlin: The policeman answered. He wrote Regular Law Breaker in his book. Thomas puffed sadly away. Sir Topham Hatt was having breakfast he was eating toast and marmalade. The butler came in.
- Butler: Excuse me, sir, you're wanted on the telephone.
- Sir Topham Hatt: Bother that telephone!
- George Carlin: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
- (Phone chattering)
- Sir Topham Hatt: I'm sorry, my dear.
- George Carlin: He said to his wife.
- Sir Topham Hatt: Thomas is in trouble with the police and I must go at once.
- George Carlin: At the station, Thomas' driver told Sir Topham Hatt what had happened.
- Sir Topham Hatt: Dangerous to the public indeed. We'll see about that.
- George Carlin: Sir Topham Hatt spoke to the policeman. But however much he argued with him it was no good.
- Policeman: The law is the law.
- George Carlin: He said.
- Policeman: And we can't change it.
- George Carlin: Sir Topham Hatt felt exhausted.
- Sir Topham Hatt: I'm sorry, driver.
- George Carlin: He said.
- Sir Topham Hatt: It's no use arguing with the policeman. We will have to make those cowcatcher things for Thomas I suppose.
- Thomas: Everyone will laugh, sir.
- George Carlin: Said Thomas.
- Thomas: They say I look like a tram.
- George Carlin: Sir Topham Hatt stared, then he laughed.
- Sir Topham Hatt: Well done, Thomas. Why didn't I think of it before. We need a tram engine. When I was on my holiday, I met a nice little engine called Toby. He takes freight cars from the farms but the trucks have taken most of his work and he needs a change. He has cowcatchers and sideplates. I'll write to this superintedant at once.
- George Carlin: A few days later, Toby arrived.
- Sir Topham Hatt: That's a good engine.
- George Carlin: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
- Sir Topham Hatt: I see you brought your coach Henrietta.
- Toby: You don't mind, do you, sir?
- George Carlin: Asked Toby.
- Toby: The stationmaster wanted to use her as a hen house, and that would never do.
- Sir Topham Hatt: No indeed.
- George Carlin: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
- Sir Topham Hatt: We couldn't allow that.
- George Carlin: Toby made the silly cars even better than Thomas did.
- Policeman: Hey you!
- George Carlin: At first, Thomas was jealous, but he was so pleased when Toby rang his bell and frightened the policeman, they've been firmed friends ever since.
- (Another segment of Toby occurs and we begin Bulls Eyes)
- George Carlin: Toby the Tram Engine has cowcatcher and sideplates. They helped to prevent animals from getting hurt if they should stray onto the line. Daisy thought Toby's fenders were silly.
- Daisy: You're afraid of getting hurt yourself.
- George Carlin: She flounced.
- Toby: I'm not.
- George Carlin: Huffed Toby.
- Daisy: Yes you are. I don't have stupid cowcatchers but i'm not frightened. I just toot and they all go away.
- Toby: But they don't.
- George Carlin: Said Toby.
- Daisy: They would with me. Animals always run if you toot and look them in the eye.
- Toby: Even bulls?
- Daisy: Even bulls.
- George Carlin: Said Daisy. Daisy had never met a bull but she purred away quite unconcerned. She tooted at a farm crossing and the horse and cart halted while she went by.
- Daisy: Huh!
- George Carlin: She said.
- Daisy: It's easy. I just toot and they all stand aside. Poor little Toby. I'm sorry he's frightened.
- George Carlin: At the next station, a policeman was waiting.
- Policeman: There's a bull on the line.
- George Carlin: He warned.
- Policeman: Please persuade it to return to the farmer.
- George Carlin: Daisy was excited.
- Daisy: Now...
- George Carlin: She thought.
- Daisy: ...I'll show Toby how to manage bulls.
- George Carlin: Champion isn't really a fierce bull, but this morning he was cross. He'd strayed from his field, crashed through a fence, slithered down a slope and now he didn't know where he was. Suddenly, he saw some grass.
- Champion: Now for my breakfast.
- George Carlin: He thought.
- Daisy: Oooh!
- George Carlin: Tooted Daisy.
- Daisy: Go on.
- George Carlin: Champion was too busy chomping to take any notice.
- Daisy: Ooh!
- George Carlin: Said Daisy again. Champion kept grazing.
- Daisy: This is all wrong.
- George Carlin: Said Daisy.
- Daisy: How can I look him in the eye if he wont turn around.
- George Carlin: At last he did.
- Champion: Moo!
- George Carlin: Said Champion.
- Daisy: Oo, oh, uh!
- George Carlin: Murmured Daisy.
- Daisy: Why doesn't he run away?
- Daisy's Driver: Go on, Daisy.
- George Carlin: Said her driver.
- Daisy's Driver: He's harmless.
- Daisy: Yes.
- George Carlin: Said Daisy unhappily.
- Daisy: You know he's harmless and I know he's harmless. But does he know. Look at his horns if i bump into him he might hurt, me uh, them. Uh, the farmer wouldn't like that.
- George Carlin: Champion sniffed at Daisy.
- (Champion starts sniffing)
- Daisy: Ugh!
- George Carlin: Said Daisy and that was that. Daisy did no more. Toby was bemused and amused to see her back in the station so soon.
- Toby: Bulls always run if you toot and look them in the eye. Eh, Daisy?
- George Carlin: Daisy stayed silent.
- Toby: Ah, well.
- George Carlin: Continued Toby.
- Toby: We can live and learn. I better chase him away for you I suppose.
- George Carlin: He clanked away to find Champion. Toby's bell rang and his whistle sounded but Champion took no notice. Then Toby whooshed loudly. That did the trick. Toby whooshed a little more and now breakfast over. Champion chauntered away to join the farmer. Daisy was feeling exhausted. She was glad when her day's work was over. Some boys were on the platform.
- Boy: Look, Daisy.
- George Carlin: One teased.
- Boy: I've got some sweets. They're called Bulls Eyes. I like them do you.
- Daisy: Ah, keep your old bulls eyes.
- George Carlin: And Daisy scuttled to her shed.
- (Another segment of Toby occurs and we begin Mavis)
- George Carlin: Mavis is a diesel engine who works at the quarry company shunting freight cars in their sidings. She has six small wheels hidden by sideplates just like Toby's. Mavis is young and full of her own ideas. She loves rearranging things too and began putting Toby's cars in different places every day. This made Toby cross.
- Toby: Freight cars...
- George Carlin: He grumbled.
- Toby: ...should be where you want them when you want them.
- Mavis: Fiddlesticks!
- George Carlin: Said Mavis and flounced away. At last, Toby lost patience.
- Toby: I can't waste time playing "Hunt The Cars" with you. Take them yourself.
- George Carlin: Mavis was pleased. Taking cars made her feel important. At the station, Diesel oiled up to her.
- Mavis: Toby's an old fusspot.
- George Carlin: She complained. Diesel sense trouble and was delighted.
- Mavis: Toby says only steam engines can manage freight cars.
- George Carlin: Continued Mavis.
- Diesel: How observe.
- George Carlin: Squirmed Diesel.
- Diesel: Depend upon it, Mavis. Anything steam engines can do, we diesels can do better.
- George Carlin: Diesel knew nothing about cars, but Mavis didn't realize this. Toby's line crosses the main road behind the station, and for a short way follows a farm lane. Frosty weather makes the mud rock-hard and very slippery. Toby stops before reaching the lane. His fireman halts the traffic at the level crossing and then he sets off again. By using the heavy cars to push him along, he has no trouble with the frosty rails and the lane and across the road. It is the only thing safe thing to do in this kind of weather. Toby warned Mavis and told her just what to do.
- Mavis: I can manage, thank you.
- George Carlin: She replied.
- Mavis: I'm not an old fusspot like you.
- George Carlin: The freight cars were tired of being pushed around by Mavis.
- Freight Cars: It's slippery.
- George Carlin: They whispered.
- Freight Cars: Let's push her around instead. On, on, on!
- George Carlin: They yelled. Mavis took no notice. Instead, she brought the cars carefully down the lane and stopped at the level crossing. All traffic halted.
- Mavis: One of the headlamp for fusspot Toby.
- George Carlin: Chortled Mavis. But Mavis had stopped in the wrong place. Instead of taking Toby's advice, she had given the cars the chance they wanted.
- Freight Cars: Hold back! Hold back!
- George Carlin: They cried.
- Mavis: Grrrr up!
- George Carlin: Ordered Mavis. The cars just laughed and her wheels spun headlessly. Workmen sanded the rails and dig away the frozen mud, but it was no good. Everyone was impatient.
- Mavis: Grrrr agh!
- George Carlin: Wailed Mavis. Toby was in the yard when he heard the news.
- Toby: I warned her.
- George Carlin: He fumed.
- Toby's Driver: She's young yet.
- George Carlin: Soothed his driver.
- Toby's Driver: And...
- Toby: She can manage her cars herself.
- George Carlin: Interrupted Toby.
- Toby's Driver: They're your cars really.
- George Carlin: His driver replied.
- Toby's Driver: Mavis is suppose to stay at the quarry if Sir Topham Hatt finds out.
- Toby: Mmmm, yes.
- George Carlin: Said Toby thoughtfully. He and his driver agreed that'll be best to help Mavis after all. An angry farmer was telling Mavis just what she could do with her train.
- Toby: Having trouble, Mavis?
- George Carlin: Chortled Toby.
- Toby: I am surprised.
- Mavis: Grrrr osh!
- George Carlin: Said Mavis.
- (Toby starts to couple up to Mavis)
- George Carlin: With much puffing and wheels slipped, Toby pushed Mavis and the freight cars back. The hard work made his fire burn fiercely, and his fireman spread hot cinders to melt the frozen mud.
- (Toby pushes Mavis and the cars all the way to the top)
- George Carlin: At last they finished.
- Toby: Goodbye!
- George Carlin: Called Toby.
- Toby: You'll managed now, I expect.
- George Carlin: Mavis didn't answer. She took the cars to the sheds, and scuttled home to the quarry as quickly as she could.
- (Another segment of Toby occurs and we begin Toby's Tightrope)
- George Carlin: One day, Percy arrived in a quarry to collect some stone for his freight cars. Snow and frost lay everywhere. There was not a sound to be heard. Percy ventured furthur. He found Mavis the new diesel engine resting in the shelter of some rocks.
- Percy: Cheer up, Mavis.
- George Carlin: He whistled. Mavis was still remembering the trouble she had with cars.
- Mavis: Manager says I don't listen for his advice. He says i'd no business chortling down Toby's line. Toby's a fusspot.
- Percy: Toby has forgotten all about freight cars than you'll ever known.
- George Carlin: Replied Percy.
- Percy: You must put the cars where he wants them, then you'll be a really useful engine. Now if you excuse me, I have to take these stones to the harbour.
- George Carlin: Mavis likes Percy but she still wouldn't to his advice.
- Mavis: Why shouldn't I go on Toby's line.
- George Carlin: The siding arrangements are awkward. The put the cars where Toby wanted them, Mavis had to make several journeys. She started making a plan.
- Mavis: If we used the key stood on Toby's line.
- George Carlin: She said to her driver.
- Mavis: We would save all was bother.
- George Carlin: Her driver suspecting nothing allow them to go as far as the level crossing. A few days later, the weather changed. As the soon melted, the quarry grew busy again. Some trains were so long that before leaving the cars for Toby, Mavis had to go beyond the level crossing with them. Now for her plan. She would go further down the line without it seeming her fault.
- Mavis: Can you keep a secret?
- George Carlin: She asked the freight cars.
- Cars: Yes, yes, yes!
- George Carlin: They chattered.
- Mavis: Will you bump me at the level crossing and tell no one I ask you?
- George Carlin: The cars promised. But while Mavis was away, Toby arrived. He decided to shunt the cars himself. The cars decided to bump him anyway. They reached the level crossing and Toby's brakes came on. This was the signal for the freight cars.
- Cars: On, on, on!
- George Carlin: They yelled. Toby was away. With the cars screaming and yelling behind him. No one realize that melted snow had turned a stream ahead into a torrent and the bridge above it was about to collapse. The rails were now like a tightrope against the thundering water.
- Toby: Stop, stop!
- George Carlin: Cried Toby. His driver thought for control. They came nearer and nearer by the bridge. It was all of nothing now. The driver breaked hard.
- (Toby reaches the broken bridge)
- George Carlin: Toby stopped still on the rails but with his wheels shredding the tightrope over the abyss. Mavis was horrified and quickly came to the rescue. Workmen anchored Toby with ropes while she pulled the freight cars away. Then, she helped Toby to safety.
- (Mavis rescuing Toby)
- Mavis: I'm sorry about the cars.
- George Carlin: Said Mavis.
- Mavis: I can't think how you manage to stop them in time.
- Toby: Oh well.
- George Carlin: Said Toby.
- Toby: My driver told me about circus people who walked tightropes, but I just didn't fancy doing it myself.
- George Carlin: Later, Sir Topham Hatt arrived.
- Sir Topham Hatt: A very smart piece of work.
- George Carlin: He said.
- Sir Topham Hatt: Mavis, you did well too I hear.
- Mavis: It was my fault about those cars, sir.
- George Carlin: She faulted.
- Mavis: But if I could...
- Sir Topham Hatt: Could what?
- Mavis: Come down the line sometimes, Sir? Toby says he'll show me what to do.
- Sir Topham Hatt: Certainly.
- George Carlin: Replied Sir Topham Hatt.
- Sir Topham Hatt: If your manager agrees.
- George Carlin: And so it was arranged. Now Mavis is as happy as can be, and Sir Topham Hatt thinks she's really useful indeed.
- (Another segment of Toby occurs and we begin Special Attraction)
- George Carlin: Toby the Tram Engine was very excited. He was wearing a brand new bell that shown like gold. He was off to the seaside. His driver was explaining everything as they puff along the line.
- Driver: There's a seaside village near here, and every year, they have a big parade with a special attraction for all the visitors. This year, Toby, you're the special attraction.
- Toby: Thank you, sir.
- George Carlin: Said Toby.
- Toby: But what does a special attraction do?
- Driver: Oh, just smiles and blows whistles at everyone.
- George Carlin: Replied his driver.
- Driver: We're almost there. Listen, you can hear the seagulls.
- George Carlin: Soon, they reach the little station by the village. But instead of a big welcome, there was just one man. He whispered to Toby's driver and turned sadly away.
- Driver: Well, if that doesn't take the biscuit.
- George Carlin: Said Toby's driver.
- Driver: They've run out of room and a parade and don't need a special attraction after all. We've got to go home, Toby. I'm sorry, old boy.
- Toby: (sighs) So am I.
- George Carlin: Sighed Toby. Percy was shunting in the yard. He didn't expect to see Toby.
- Percy: What are you doing back so soon?
- George Carlin: Before Toby could reply, Sir Topham Hatt arrived.
- Sir Topham Hatt: Leave these cars please, Percy. There's an emergency at the harbour.
- Driver: Come on, Percy.
- George Carlin: Said his driver.
- Driver: This'll be trouble with Bulstrode.
- Percy: Who's Bulstrode?
- George Carlin: Wondered Percy. He was still surprised about Toby, and now he had two puzzles to sort out. His driver explained.
- Driver: Bulstrode is disagreeable barge. He never stops complaining.
- George Carlin: His driver was right about Bulstrode. Today, the barge was more bad temper than ever.
- Bulstrode: Come on, come on! Hic. Why aren't you cars where you should be?
- Cars: There's no engine, and we can only go where we put!
- George Carlin: Shouted the cars.
- Cars: You're in the wrong place, not us!
- George Carlin: When Percy arrived, Bulstrode was sulking and the cars were crosser still.
- Cars: Our stone is for Bulstrode. Please put us in a siding so that we can load him up and be rid of him.
- George Carlin: But the cars were being careless. As Percy was lining them up, they burst through some buffers.
- Cars: Help, help!
- George Carlin: They wailed. But it was too late.
- (Percy pushes the cars one by one on top of Bulstrode and is left horrified)
- Bulstrode: (gurgling) Oh!
- George Carlin: Cried Bulstrode.
- Bulstrode: I'm sinking!
- Cars: Serves you right!
- George Carlin: Giggled the cars.
- Cars: You're always barging in and moaning.
- George Carlin: It took a very long time to clear the mess. Percy watched as Bulstrode was towed to the beach.
- Workmen: There you are.
- George Carlin: Said the workmen.
- Workmen: Now you just stay here. Children can play you all day and at long last you'll be useful.
- Bulstrode: (groaning)
- George Carlin: When Percy got home, he and Toby exchange all their news.
- Toby: Well, we both have seaside surprises today.
- George Carlin: Laughed Toby.
- Percy: But driver says that I'm a special attraction anyway, and so are you.
- Toby: Every time we go on our own line.
- Percy: What do you mean?
- George Carlin: Asked Percy.
- Toby: Well, all we have to do is smile and blow whistles at everyone.
- (Another segment of Toby occurs and we begin Toby's Discovery)
- Alec Baldwin: One morning, Sir Topham Hatt and his grandchildren came to see Toby.
- Sir Topham Hatt: Come on, Toby, we're all going to the seaside. We will ride in Henrietta.
- Toby: Yes, sir.
- Alec Baldwin: Said Toby happily. They came to a small seaside station. Soon, the children were playing in the sand, building a splendid castle. Sir Topham Hatt inspected it.
- Sir Topham Hatt: My word's a very fine castle. Have you seen a real one like it?
- Bridget: Yes.
- Alec Baldwin: Replied the children.
- Stephen: It's here on the Island.
- Alec Baldwin: And they showed him the map.
- Sir Topham Hatt: Hmm.
- Alec Baldwin: Pondered Sir Topham Hatt. They met Toby at the harbour.
- Sir Topham Hatt: Come along, we are going exploring.
- Alec Baldwin: Soon they were in the wildest part of the Island. They stopped by a lonely signalbox.
- Signalman: Where are you going?
- Alec Baldwin: Asked the Signalman.
- Sir Topham Hatt: We're trying to find an old castle.
- Signalman: I know the place sir.
- Alec Baldwin: Said the signalman.
- Signalman: There's a small junction not too far down the line. Just switch the points.
- Alec Baldwin: When the fireman switched the points, their adventure really began. Toby pushed past branches and bushes until they came to another little junction. There they saw two signs saying: To The Castle and To The Mine.
- Sir Topham Hatt: We'll go to the castle first.
- Alec Baldwin: Toby stopped by an old water tower.
- Children: There's the castle.
- Sir Topham Hatt: Yes.
- Alec Baldwin: Replied Sir Topham Hatt.
- Sir Topham Hatt: And now we shall visit the mine.
- Alec Baldwin: Once upon a time, the mine had been worked by the little engines and their lines were still in place. But now everything is very rusty and overgrown. Sir Topham Hatt was most impressed, but Toby was rather scared. He was glad when it was time to go home.
- Sir Topham Hatt: I think the castle and the mine will make a fine place for visitors. But it will take some hard work first.
- Toby: Y-yes, sir.
- Alec Baldwin: Said Toby nervously. Sir Topham Hatt's plans were soon put into action. But Toby was still worried.
- Toby: I'm sure this place was haunted.
- Alec Baldwin: He thought.
- Toby's Driver: It's our turn to stay here on guard tonight, Toby.
- Toby: Oh y-y-yes. Why not?
- Alec Baldwin: Stuttered Toby.
- Thomas: Beware of the ghost, Toby.
- Alec Baldwin: Thomas said.
- Toby: What ghost?
- Alec Baldwin: Asked Toby?
- Thomas: The old warrior ghost. Every night he lights his fire then goes hunting. Toot toot, goodbye.
- Alec Baldwin: Night came. Toby looked anxiously around. Everything seemed rather spooky. Quite suddenly, he heard a strange wheezing sound.
- Toby: It's the ghost!
- Alec Baldwin: He wailed.
- Toby's Driver: What ghost?
- Alec Baldwin: His driver asked.
- Toby: It's the old warrior. He's come to hunt me down.
- Toby's Driver: Don't be so daft. We'll go and investigate.
- Alec Baldwin: They returned quite soon.
- Toby's Fireman: The old warrior wants to meet you.
- Alec Baldwin: Laughed his fireman.
- Toby: Can't it wait till morning?
- Alec Baldwin: Replied Toby.
- Toby's Driver: Ghosts don't work dayshifts.
- Alec Baldwin: Said his driver. Toby bravely made his way.
- Toby: Well blast my bell.
- Alec Baldwin: He exclaimed. There in front of him was a little old engine.
- Signalman: This is your ghost, Toby.
- Alec Baldwin: Said the signalman.
- Signalman: His name's really Bertrum. But we call him the old warrior because he's so brave.
- Alec Baldwin: Bertrum and Toby are now friends. They take the visitors to the castle and the mine. If there are any ghosts here, they certainly help to make the place very happy.
- (Another segment of Toby occurs and we begin Toby and The Flood)
- Alec Baldwin: It had been raining hard for weeks. Toby was feeling miserable. Everywhere was wet, wet, wet. His branch line runs to a village. The water and the river had risen with the rain. Only the great wall known as a dam was stopping the water from overflowing. Percy arrived just as Toby was about to inspect the dam for any damage.
- Percy: Driver tells me it may be dangerous up there. Please be careful, Toby.
- Alec Baldwin: Said Percy.
- Toby: I'll try.
- Alec Baldwin: Replied Toby bravely. Percy watched anxiously as Toby trundled away. His journey took him over a wooden bridge at the end of the village. The river surged dangerously beneath it. Harold the Helicopter was inspecting the dam as Toby arrived.
- Toby's Driver: Be brave Toby.
- Alec Baldwin: Called his Driver.
- Toby's Driver: We had to cross to the other side.
- Alec Baldwin: The dam did not look safe at all. Toby was very worried. Soon, he knew why.
- Toby's Driver: The dam's breaking up! We must warn everyone!
- Alec Baldwin: Toby shunted back as fast as his wheels would let him. Percy was waiting anxiously for Toby by the bridge. The river had risen so high that the bridge was in danger of collapsing.
- Toby's Driver: The dam's breaking up. We must find high ground.
- Alec Baldwin: Shouted Toby's driver.
- Percy: Your only chance is to cross the bridge.
- Alec Baldwin: Called Percy.
- Toby: It doesn't look safe to me.
- Alec Baldwin: Wailed Toby.
- Toby's Driver: It's our only chance.
- Alec Baldwin: Said his driver.
- Toby's Driver: If the dam breaks, we'll be done for!
- Alec Baldwin: Toby was halfway across the bridge when disaster struck.
- (The dam breaks apart)
- Toby: Help!
- Alec Baldwin: Called Toby.
- Percy's Driver: We'll follow him on our line. It needs the river further down.
- Alec Baldwin: As Toby floated helplessly on the floodwaters, they passed a sign that made them shudder: Beware The Waterfall.
- Toby's Driver: If we go over that waterfall, we're doomed.
- Alec Baldwin: Then they saw Harold who swopped low and shouted urgently to them.
- Harold: We're going to drop a rope to you. Attach it to yourself, quickly now!
- Alec Baldwin: And they did, to one of Toby's buffers. Just then, Percy arrived. Harold flew over to him.
- Harold: Catch a rope and pull Toby to safety!
- Alec Baldwin: He called.
- (Percy with all his might pulls Toby and the bridge to safety)
- Alec Baldwin: Toby was safe at last. When the floods were over and the dam mended, the villagers had a big party for Toby, hosted by Sir Topham Hatt.
- Sir Topham Hatt: You were very brave, Toby.
- Toby: Thanks to Harold.
- Percy: I could never been so brave, Toby.
- Toby: Oh, I'm sure you would be, but you never know till you tried.
- Alec Baldwin: Percy rather hope he never had to.
- (Another segment of Toby occurs and we begin Toby)
- Children: (singing) North of the island, there lives a dear old train, a little tram engine, Toby is his name. He's quaint and old fashioned, but careful and wise. His coach is Henrietta and she's seen better days. His mind keeps returning to the good old days. When they were busy working everyday. But nobody rides with them nowadays. They can't understand why things have changed. Their line is closing down today, forever. Toby, oh Toby. What will become of you? The world's much nicer whenever we see you. Toby, dear Toby. There's still lots that you can do. Oldies but goldies, we still care about you. All of the children came to say goodbye. They clapped and cheered as Toby rang his bell, "Bye-bye." Everyone was sad to see them go. Whatever will they do, and where will they go? Suddenly news came to brighten up their day. How Toby and Henrietta were needed right away. The Fat Controller had written to say, could they please come and help right away. Now they're part of his family forever. Toby, oh Toby. Show them what you can do. The world's much nicer whenever we see you. Toby, dear Toby. There's so much to learn from you. Oldies but goldies, we still care about you. Oldies but goldies, we still care for you.
