Better Late Than Never

  • Ringo Starr: The characters were finding life difficult. Workmen were mending the viaduct on the main line. The arches needed strenghtany. Steven did not want to close the railway while the work was done and so repairs took a long time. The characters have to take great care when crossing the viaduct and the delay often made them late on their journey to the junction where they knew Ash would be ready to collect his passengers. Ash grew crosser and crosser.
  • Ash: Time's time.
  • Ringo Starr: He grumbled.
  • Ash: Why should I keep my passengers waiting while Shaggy and Raimundo dawdle about all day on viaducts?
  • Shaggy: Don't blame me.
  • Ringo Starr: Snorted Shaggy.
  • Shaggy: If we hurried to cross the viaduct, it might collapsed, and then you have no passengers at all. What would you do then?
  • Ash: Run my train on time for one thing.
  • Ringo Starr: Retorted Ash. He hurried away before Shaggy could answer. Sonic was impatient too. He was time to arrived just after Ash. His passengers found that, instead of going straight from the hedgehog till their train, they were kept waiting till Ash arrived. Soon Sonic grew cross with Ash.
  • Sonic: Late again!
  • Ringo Starr: He remarked as Ash panted wearily in.
  • Sonic: We may be friends, but I thought you could go fast, Ash. It's time we had another race. I reckon I can beat you now.
  • Ringo Starr: Ash let off steam loudly.
  • Ash: Rubbish!
  • Ringo Starr: He hissed fiercely.
  • Ash: It's those main line characters. They differ about on the viaduct, and they blamed Steven's workmen. It's just an excuse for laziness if you ask me.
  • Ringo Starr: One day, Raimundo was later than ever at the junction.
  • Raimundo: I'm sorry, Ash.
  • Ringo Starr: He puffed.
  • Raimundo: I was held up at the station, and the viaduct made it worse.
  • Ash: It's lucky for you I'm a guaratee connection.
  • Ringo Starr: Grumbled Ash. Before Raimundo could answer, he puffed importantly away.
  • Ash: Come along, come along!
  • Ringo Starr: He panted to the coaches. Suzy and Pietra did their best but Ash still found that he couldn't save much time. Suddenly, Ash saw Sonic ahead. His radiator was steaming.
  • Ash: What's the matter?
  • Ringo Starr: Asked Ash.
  • Ash: You should be at the station by now. You're late.
  • Sonic: I feel dreadful.
  • Ringo Starr: Moaned Sonic.
  • Sonic: All upset inside and driver says he can't make me better. Thank goodness you're late too. Can you take my passengers please? They'll never get home overwise.
  • Ash: Of course.
  • Ringo Starr: Agreed Ash. He now felt sorry for Sonic, and promised to get help at the next station. Ash set off again already he felt much more cheerful and Sonic's passengers, travelling in Suzy and Pietra all reached home safely. When Sonic was better he came to thank Ash.
  • Sonic: I'm sorry I teased you about being late.
  • Ash: That's all right.
  • Ringo Starr: Replied Ash.
  • Ash: I'm glad I can help. There are times when being late isn't such a bad thing after all.
  • Ringo Starr: With the last cheerful greeting, the two friends went back to work.

Pop Goes Ken

  • Ringo Starr: Virgil is very proud of being a teenager. He talks endlessly about it. But he works hard, too, and makes everything go like clockwork. It was a splendid day. The Beedrill and Arcanine behaved well. The passengers even stopped grumbling. But the characters didn't like having to bustle about.
  • Virgil: There are two ways of doing things.
  • Ringo Starr: Virgil told them.
  • Virgil: The teenager way, or the wrong way. I'm a teenager and...
  • Shaggy, Terry and Raimundo: Don't we know it!
  • Ringo Starr: The characters were glad when the visitor came. He purred smoothly towards him. Steven introduce him.
  • Steven: Here is Ken. I have agreed to give him a trial. He needs to learn. Please teach him, Virgil.
  • Ken: Good morning.
  • Ringo Starr: Purred Ken in an oily voice.
  • Ken: Please to meet you, Virgil. Is that Raimundo and Shaggy and Terry too? I am delighted to meet such famous characters.
  • Ringo Starr: The silly characters were flattered.
  • Characters: He has very good manners.
  • Ringo Starr: They murmured.
  • Characters: We're pleased to have in our yard.
  • Ringo Starr: Virgil had his doubts.
  • Virgil: Come on!
  • George Carlin: He said. Ken purred after him.
  • Ken: Your worthy Ste...
  • Virgil: Steven to you.
  • Ringo Starr: Ordered Virgil. Ken looked hurt.
  • Ken: Your worthy Steven thinks I need to learn. He is mistaken. We villains don't need to learn. We know everything. We come to a yard and improvement. We are revolutionary.
  • Virgil: Oh!
  • Ringo Starr: Said Virgil.
  • Virgil: If you are revo-thingummy, perhaps you would collect my Beedrill while I fetch Terry's Arcanine.
  • Ringo Starr: Ken delighted to show off, purred away. When Virgil returned, Ken was trying to take some Beedrill from a siding. They were old and empty. They've not been touch for a long time. Ken found them hard to move. Pull! Push! Backwards! Forwards!
  • Beedrill: Oh! Oh!
  • Ringo Starr: The Beedrill groaned.
  • Beedrill: We can't! We won't!
  • Ringo Starr: Virgil watched with interest. Ken lost patience.
  • Ken: Grrr!
  • Ringo Starr: He roared, and gave a great heave. The Beedrill jerked forward.
  • Beedrill: Ohhh!
  • Ringo Starr: They screamed.
  • Beedrill: We can't! We won't!
  • Ringo Starr: Some of their brakes snapped, and the gear jammed in the sleepers.
  • Ken: Grrrr!
  • Virgil: Ha, ha, ha!
  • Ringo Starr: Chuckled Virgil. Ken recovered and try to push the Beedrill back, but they wouldn't move. Virgil ran quietly around to collect the other Beedrill.
  • Virgil: Thank you for arranging these, Ken. I must go now.
  • Ken: Don't you want this lot?
  • Virgil: No thank you.
  • Ringo Starr: Ken gulped.
  • Ken: And I've taken all this trouble? Why didn't you tell me?
  • Virgil: You never asked me. Besides.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Virgil.
  • Virgil: You were having such fun being revo-whatever-it-was-you-said. Goodbye.
  • Ken: Grrrr!
  • Ringo Starr: Ken had to help the workmen clear the mess. He hated it. All the Beedrill were laughing and singing at him.
  • Beedrill: Beedrill are waiting in the yard, tackling them with ease'll, show the world what I can do, gaily boasts Ken, in and out he creeps about, like a big black weasel, when he pulls the wrong Beedrill out, Pop goes Ken!
  • Ken: Grrr!
  • Ringo Starr: Growled Ken, and scuttled away to sulk in the shed.

Ken's Devious Deed

  • Ringo Starr: Ken of the Pokemon Mystery Club was sulking. The Beedrill would not stop singing rudely at him. Virgil was horrified.
  • Virgil: Shut up!
  • Ringo Starr: He ordered, and bumped them hard.
  • Virgil: I'm sorry our Beedrill were rude to you, Ken,
  • Ringo Starr: Ken was still furious.
  • Ken: It's all your fault. You made them laugh at me.
  • Shaggy: Nonsense.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Shaggy.
  • Shaggy: Virgil would never do that. We characters have our differences, but we never talked about them to the Beedrill. That would be dis...dis...
  • Terry: Disgraceful.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Terry.
  • Raimundo: Disgusting.
  • Ringo Starr: Put in Raimundo.
  • Shaggy: Despicable.
  • Ringo Starr: Finished Shaggy. Ken hated Virgil. He wanted him to be sent away, so he made a plan. He was going to tell lies about Virgil. Next day, he spoke to the Beedrill.
  • Ken: I see you like jokes. You made a good joke about me yesterday. I laughed and laughed. Virgil told me one about Terry. I'll whisper it. Don't tell Terry I told you.
  • Ringo Starr: And he sniggered away.
  • Beedrill: Ha, ha, ha!
  • Ringo Starr: Guffawed the Beedrill.
  • Beedrill: Terry will be cross with Virgil when he knows. Let's tell him and get back at Virgil for bumping us.
  • George Carlin: They laughed rudely at the characters as they went by. Soon Terry, Shaggy and Raimundo found out why.
  • Terry: Disgraceful.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Terry.
  • Raimundo: Disgusting.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Raimundo.
  • Shaggy: Despicable.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Shaggy.
  • Shaggy: We cannot allow it.
  • Ringo Starr: They consulted together.
  • Shaggy: Yes.
  • Ringo Starr: They said.
  • Shaggy: He did it to us, we'll do it to him and see how he likes it.
  • Ringo Starr: Virgil was tired out. The Beedrill had been cheeky and troublesome. He wanted a rest in the shed. The three characters barred his way.
  • Terry, Raimundo and Shaggy: Hooosh!
  • Raimundo: Keep out!
  • Virgil: Stop fooling.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Virgil.
  • Virgil: I'm tired.
  • Terry, Raimundo and Shaggy: So are we.
  • Ringo Starr: Hissed the characters.
  • Terry, Raimundo and Shaggy: We're tired of you. We like Ken. We don't like you. You tell tales about us to the Beedrill.
  • Virgil: I don't!
  • Terry, Raimundo and Shaggy: You do!
  • Virgil: I don't!
  • Terry, Raimundo and Shaggy: You do!
  • Ringo Starr: Steven came to stop the noise.
  • Terry: Virgil called me a galloping sausage!
  • Ringo Starr: Spluttered Terry.
  • Raimundo: Rusty red scrap-irons!
  • Ringo Starr: Hissed Raimundo.
  • Shaggy: I'm old square wheels!
  • Ringo Starr: Fumed Shaggy.
  • Steven: Well, Virgil?
  • Ringo Starr: Virgil considered.
  • Virgil: I only wish sir.
  • Ringo Starr: He said gravely.
  • Virgil: That I thought of those names myself. If the dome fits...
  • Steven: (clearing throat)
  • Terry, Raimundo and Shaggy: He made Beedrill laugh at us.
  • Ringo Starr: Accused the characters. Steven recovered. He been trying not to laugh himself.
  • Steven: Did you, Virgil?
  • Virgil: Certainly not, sir. No character will be as mean as that.
  • Ringo Starr: Ken lurked up.
  • Steven: Now, Ken, you heard what Virgil said.
  • Ken: I can't understand it, sir, to think that Virgil of all characters. I'm dreadfully grieved, sir, but no nothing.
  • Steven: I see.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Steven. Ken squirmed and hope he didn't.
  • Steven: I'm sorry, Virgil, but you must go to Kevin's station for a while. I know he'll be glad to see him.
  • Virgil: As you wish, sir.
  • Ringo Starr: Virgil trundled sadly away, while Ken smirked with triumph.

A Close Shave For Virgil

  • Ringo Starr: Virgil Hawkins walked sadly to Kevin's station.
  • Virgil: It's not fair.
  • Ringo Starr: He complained.
  • Virgil: Ken has been telling lies about me and made Steven and all the characters think I'm horrid.
  • Ringo Starr: Kevin smiled.
  • Kevin: I know you weren't, and so does Steven. You wait and see. Why don't you help me with these Beedrill?
  • Ringo Starr: Virgil felt happier with Kevin, and set to work at once. The Beedrill were silly, heavy and noisy. The two characters have to work hard pushing and pulling all afternoon. At last, they reached the top of the hill.
  • Virgil: Goodbye!
  • Ringo Starr: Whistled Virgil, and rolled gently over the crossing to the other line. Virgil love coasting down the hill, running easily with the wind whistling past. Suddenly...
  • Virgil: It was the conductor's warning whistle.
  • Beedrill: Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah!
  • Ringo Starr: Laughed the Beedrill.
  • Beedrill: We've broken away, we've broken away! Chase him, bump him, throw him off the rails!
  • Ringo Starr: They yelled.
  • Driver: Hurry, Virgil, hurry!
  • Ringo Starr: Said the driver. They raced through Kevin's station, but the Beedrill were catching up.
  • Driver: As fast as we can, then they'll catch us gradually.
  • Ringo Starr: The driver was gaining control.
  • Driver: Another clear mile and we'll do it. Oh, glory, look at that!
  • Ringo Starr: Raimundo was just pulling out on they're line through the station ahead. Any minute, there could be a crash.
  • Driver: It's up to you now, Virgil.
  • Ringo Starr: Cried the driver. Virgil put every ounce of wait and steam against the Beedrill.
  • Virgil: It's too late!
  • Ringo Starr: Virgil groaned and shut his eyes. He veered into a siding where Wario had sent off shop. He was shaving a customer.
  • (Crash!)
  • Ringo Starr: The silly Beedrill were knocked their conductor off his van, and left him far behind after he had whistled a warning. But the Beedrill didn't care. They were feeling very pleased with themselves.
  • Virgil: Beg pardon, Sir.
  • Ringo Starr: Gasped Virgil.
  • Virgil: Excuse my intrusion.
  • Wario: No I won't.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Wario.
  • Wario: You frightened my customers! I'll teach you!
  • Ringo Starr: And he lathered Virgil's face all other. Poor Virgil! Ash was helping to pull the Beedrill away when Steven arrived.
  • Wario: I do not like characters popping through my walls.
  • Ringo Starr: Fumed Wario.
  • Steven: I appreciate your feelings.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Steven.
  • Steven: But you must know that this character and his crew had prevented a serious accident. It was a very close shave.
  • Wario: Oh.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Wario.
  • Wario: Oh! Excuse me.
  • Ringo Starr: He filled the basin of water to wash Virgil's face.
  • Wario: I'm sorry. I didn't know you were been a brave character.
  • Virgil: That's all right, sir. I didn't know that either.
  • Steven: You were very brave indeed.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Steven.
  • Steven: I'm proud of you.
  • Ringo Starr: Steven watched the rescue operation, then he had more news to Virgil.
  • Steven: And when you are properly washed and mended, you are coming home.
  • Virgil: Home, sir? Do you mean the yard?
  • Steven: Of course.
  • Virgil: But sir, they don't like me. They like Ken.
  • Steven: Not now. I never believed Ken, so I sent him packing. The characters were sorry and want you back.
  • Ringo Starr: A few days later when he came home, there was a really rousing welcome for Virgil Hawkins.

Terry Takes A Dip

  • Ringo Starr: Terry was resting in a siding. Sometimes he thought...
  • Terry: It's really tiring to be such a large and splendid character, one does have to keep up appearance is so.
  • Shaggy: Peep peep peep peep! Hello, lazybones!
  • Ringo Starr: Whistled Shaggy,
  • Terry: What cheek!
  • Ringo Starr: Spluttered Terry.
  • Terry: That Shaggy is too big for his feet. Fancy speaking to me like that. Me who has never had an accident.
  • Alex: Aren't jammed whistles and burst safety valves accidents?
  • Ringo Starr: Asked Alex innocently.
  • Terry: No indeed. High spirits. Might happen to any character. But to come off the rails like Shaggy did. Well, I ask you. Is that right? Is it decent?
  • Ringo Starr: Then it was Shaggy's turn to take the express. Terry watch him getting ready.
  • Terry: Be careful, Shaggy. You're not pulling the flying kipper now. Mind you keep on the rails today.
  • Ringo Starr: Shaggy went off in a huff, and Terry yawned and went to sleep. But not for long.
  • Driver: Wake up, Terry.
  • Ringo Starr: Said his driver.
  • Driver: A special train's coming and we're to pull it.
  • Terry: Is it coaches or Beedrill?
  • Driver: Beedrill.
  • Ringo Starr: Said his driver.
  • Terry: Beedrill.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Terry.
  • Terry: Puh.
  • Ringo Starr: Terry's fire was slow to start, so Kevin had to push Terry to the turntable to get him facing the right way.
  • Terry: I won't go, I won't go!
  • Ringo Starr: Grumbled Terry.
  • Kevin: Don't be silly, don't be silly.
  • Ringo Starr: Puffed Kevin. At last, Terry was on the turntable. The movement had shaken his fire. It was now burning nicely and making steam. Terry was cross and didn't care what he did. He waited till the table was halfway round.
  • Terry: I'll show them, I'll show them.
  • Ringo Starr: He hissed. He moved slowly forward to jam the table, but he couldn't stop himself and slithered into the ditch.
  • Terry: Oosh!
  • Ringo Starr: He hissed.
  • Terry: Get me out, get me out!
  • Driver: Not a hope.
  • Ringo Starr: Said his driver and fireman.
  • Fireman: You're stuck, you silly great character. Don't you understand that?
  • Ringo Starr: They telephoned Steven.
  • Steven: So Terry didn't want to take the special train and ran into a ditch? What's that you say? The special's waiting? Tell Kevin to take it please. And Terry? Oh, leave him where his is. We'll get him out later.
  • Ringo Starr: On the other side of the ditch, some little boys were chattering.
  • Boy 1: Coo, doesn't he look silly?
  • Boy 2: They'll never get him out.
  • Ringo Starr: They began to sing.
  • Boys: Silly old Terry fell in a ditch, fell in a ditch, fell in a ditch, silly old Terry fell in a ditch all in the Monday morning.
  • Ringo Starr: Terry layed in the ditch all day.
  • Terry: Oh, dear.
  • Ringo Starr: He thought.
  • Terry: I shall never get out.
  • Ringo Starr: But that evening, they lifted Terry and made a rope of sleepers under his feet to keep him from the mud. Strong ropes were fastened to his back end, and Raimundo and Shaggy pulling hard, managed to bring him to safety. Late that night, Terry crawled home, a sadder and wiser character.

Down The Hole

  • Ringo Starr: One day, Ash was at the university when Terry shuffled in with some Beedrill.
  • Ash: Phew!
  • Ringo Starr: Remarked Ash.
  • Ash: What a funny smell. Can you smell a smell?
  • Suzy: I can't smell a smell.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Suzy.
  • Ash: A funny musty sort of smell.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Ash.
  • Terry: No one noticed until you did.
  • Ringo Starr: Grumbled Terry.
  • Terry: It must be yours.
  • Ringo Starr: Not long ago, he had fallen into a dirty ditch. Ash enjoyed teasing him about it.
  • Ash: Suzy, Pietra, do you know what I think it is? It's ditchwater.
  • Ringo Starr: Before Terry could answer, Ash puffed away. Suzy and Pietra could hardly believe their ears.
  • Suzy: He's dreadfully rude I feel quite ashamed.
  • Pietra: I feel quite ashamed he's dreadfully rude.
  • Ringo Starr: And to Ash they said.
  • Suzy and Pietra: You musn't be rude, you make us ashamed.
  • Ringo Starr: But Ash didn't care a bit.
  • Ash: That was funny, that was funny.
  • Ringo Starr: He chuckled. He felt very pleased with himself. Suzy and Pietra were deeply shocked. They have great respect for Terry McGinnis. Ash left the coaches at the station and went off to a mine for some Beedrill. Long ago, miners digging there have made tunnels under the ground. Their rooves are strong enough to hold up cars but not the weight of characters. A large notice warns them not to enter the area: Danger! Characters must not pass this board.
  • Ash: Silly old board.
  • Ringo Starr: Thought Ash. He had often tried to pass it but had never suceeded. But this morning he had made a plan. The fireman went to throw the switch.
  • Ash: Now for my plan!
  • Ringo Starr: Huffed Ash. Bumping the Beedrill fiercely he jerked his driver off the footplate and followed them into the siding.
  • Driver: Come back!
  • Ringo Starr: Yelled his driver.
  • (A loud splash is heard as Ash falls to the mine)
  • Ash: Fire and smoke!
  • Ringo Starr: Said Ash.
  • Ash: I'm sunk.
  • Ringo Starr: And he was.
  • Ash: Oh, dear.
  • Ringo Starr: He said.
  • Ash: I am a silly trainer.
  • Steven: And a very naughty one, too. I saw you!
  • Ringo Starr: Said Steven.
  • Ash: Please let me out. I wont do it again.
  • Steven: I'm not sure. We can't lift you out with the cranes. The ground's not firm enough. Hmm, let me see. I wonder if Terry could pull you out.
  • Ash: Yes sir.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Ash. But he didn't want to meet Terry just yet.
  • Terry: Down the mine is he? Ha, ha, ha!
  • Ringo Starr: Laughed Terry.
  • Terry: What a joke! Boop boop! Little Ash, we'll have your out in a couple of puffs.
  • Ringo Starr: Strong cables were fastened between the two characters.
  • Steven: Are you ready? Heave!
  • Ringo Starr: It was a lot harden than they all thought. But at last Ash was free.
  • Ash: I'm sorry I was cheeky.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Ash.
  • Terry: That's all right, Ash. You made me laugh.
  • Ringo Starr: Replied Terry.
  • Terry: I'm in disgrace.
  • Ash: So am I.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Ash.
  • Terry: Why so you are Ash. Shall we form an alliance? You help me and I help you.
  • Ash: Right you are.
  • Ringo Starr: Agreed Ash.
  • Terry: Good. That's settled.
  • Ringo Starr: Rumbled Terry. And buffer to buffer the allies puffed home.

The Runaway

  • Ringo Starr: Ash Ketchum was ill. Workmen had try to make him better, but it was no use.
  • Steven: Kevin must send you to the works.
  • Ringo Starr: Said Steven. Ash felt very miserable. Then, Steven spoke to Virgil.
  • Steven: I want you to help Alex and Jackie while Ash is away.
  • Ringo Starr: Virgil was delighted. He already knew Alex and soon made friends with Jackie and Sonic. Freakazoid gave him a big welcome too.
  • Freakazoid: Take care of Ash's coaches.
  • Ringo Starr: He advised.
  • Freakazoid: He's sure to miss them while he's away.
  • Ringo Starr: Virgil was very gentle with the coaches. Suzy and Pietra were impressed.
  • Suzy and Pietra: Such nice manners.
  • Ringo Starr: They told each other.
  • Suzy and Pietra: It really is a pleasure to go out with him.
  • Ringo Starr: When Ash came back, Suzy and Pietra told him how well Virgil had managed. Ash was so happy to be home that he soon forgot to be jealous. The works have left Ash's handbrake very stiff. It made his brakes seen they were on, when in fact they were not. As a result, he and his coaches often overran the platform. Ash found this most embarrasing. Gradually, his driver and fireman learned to be extra careful. But one day, Ash's fireman was ill and a relief man took his place. The fireman had fastened the coupling and joined the driver and stationmaster on the platform to wait for Shaggy's passengers. The fireman had forgot all about Ash's handbrake. Ash simmered happily.
  • Ash: Not long now.
  • Ringo Starr: He thought. As he saw Shaggy slowly approaching. But Ash's brakes were not on and suddenly he felt his wheels begin to move. He tried to stop, but he couldn't without his driver and fireman. He tried to whistle a warning, but he couldn't do that either. The Conductor, driver, fireman and passengers were all stranded on the platform.
  • Suzy and Pietra: Stop! Stop!
  • Ringo Starr: Shrieked Suzy and Pietra. But Ash, with plenty of steam, kept on going. The alarm went down the line.
  • Signalman: Stop the runaway!
  • Ringo Starr: There ready for action was Superman. The inspector had made a plan and together they took off into the sky. At last Ash was tiring.
  • Ash: I need to stop, I need to stop.
  • Ringo Starr: He panted weirdly. As they neared the next station Ash saw Superman land. They entered the platform slowly enough for the inspector to act. Judging his moments the inspector scrambled into the cab and screwed the brakes on.
  • (The inspector brakes with all his strength)
  • Ringo Starr: At last Ash stopped. Both he and the inspector were very relieved. Then they thanked Superman.
  • Superman: Think nothing of it.
  • Ringo Starr: Whirred Superman.
  • Superman: Glad to be at service anytime.
  • Inspector: Phew.
  • Ringo Starr: Remarked The inspector.
  • Inspector: We must never let this happen again, Ash.
  • Ringo Starr: Weirdly, Ash agreed with him.
