waiting for firewall hardware still[]

hasnt arrived yet. spent 40 bucks for 2 routers (one for main server, one for mirror)

heartbeat looks ok to install, but failover feature might take some more research.

hardware arrived![]

finally... i've put webserver on the net and forwarded appropriate ports, now putting on the finishing touches before turning it over to you guys to choose the cms we want to use.

right now, considering e107 (what we used before) and drupal (in some ways superior than e107). there's a cool cms comparison matrix thingie here [cms matrix http://www.cmsmatrix.org/matrix]

e107 defies installation as it requires recompiling php with mysql extensions enabled. source files have been downloaded but still need to iron out a few wrinkles before it can be compiled succesfully.

drupal worked right out of the box, but as the interface is still unfamiliar, it's taking some time to figure out how to create users and grant privileges. i have just completed this but in the process seemed to have crashed apache (or connection died?) cant tell. thus work today cannot continue until i get back to the console to see what happened.

i have already installed mediawiki but it needs to be configured before it goes online, this can be used later for projects involving the whole community.

update[]

ok so i figured out what happened. drupal didnt crash anything, just a lucky coincidence that the lease on the dhcp ran out when i was editing and somehow it obtained a different ip address (even though i reserved it in the router) and thus the port forwarding information became obsolete. i have remedied this by using static ip address, hopefully this problem is permanently fixed.

drupal back online[]

ok so today i spent 8 hrs playing around with drupal and getting used to the interface. it is pretty fun actually and it will begin to make sense an hour into the "fun". the one thing that you need to get used to about this interface is that everything is modular. everything can go anywhere and everywhere --- provided you label them correctly and place them in the right hierarchy. if you forget, it wont complain... it just wont do it and you are left wondering why something doesnt appear on your front page. it kinda reminds me of the simplistic beauty of command line operating systems like linux in text mode.

Mylogo

i also spent some time in creating a logo. i had to steal a picture with white background so it will meld into the white background of the site and this is the best i can do so far. i have also tried to change the favicon (picture next to the URL in your address bar) but somehow it doesnt show up. i'm not sure why... i stuck with the standardized 16x16 px, even used a web-based favicon converter to make it, but it still wont work. at home, i'll just force it in there by placing that file into htmlroot.

update[]

oh yea almost forgot. when lousy was trying to help me test the new site, he mentioned that it came up all garbled. i contacted our domain registrar and i guess they did something to fix it. so this is fixed.

also lousy mentioned that he couldnt log into the site when he used IE. i searched for this problem and finally found the culprit. need to go to internet options->security level. lower it until u can log in.

cant get favicon to work[]

i think it has to do with our domain being forwarded, oh well. it wouldve been a nice touch... too bad.

reverting back to e107[]

well ok, due to popular demand, we're abandoning drupal for our more familiar e107 interface. i've just tested the auto registration and it works since drupal and e107 use similar methods of sending mail out. other than that, i'll let the others handle prettifying the site since they should have some experience doing that. dakota should pretty much get the hackerlist back easily since there's no change from the interface's point of view.
