Script

  • Narrator: One day Big Mac was at the dock where he lived with the tugs. They were all bigger than Big Mac and told him about it.
  • Top Hat: The driver won't choose you again.
  • Narrator: Said Top Hat.
  • Top Hat: He wants strong tugs like us.
  • Narrator: But the driver and fireman felt sorry for Big Mac.
  • Big Mac's Driver and Fireman: Would you like to come out today?
  • Big Mac: Oh, yes, please!
  • Narrator: Said Big Mac. So he lit his fire, gained lots of steam, and Big Mac floated away. The other tugs were very cross at being left behind. Big Mac had a wonderful day. The ferries were very kind and the driver was very pleased.
  • Big Mac: I'm going out again tomorrow.
  • Narrator: Big Mac told the other tugs that night.
  • Big Mac: What do you think of that?
  • Narrator: But he didn't hear what they thought for he was so tired and happy that he fell asleep at once. Next morning Big Mac woke up to find nothing had changed. Top Hat was still boasting.
  • Top Hat: You watch me, Big Mac as I rush through with the express. That will be a splendid sight for you. Goodbye, Big Mac. Look out for me this afternoon.
  • Narrator: Big Mac went off to do some shunting. Big Mac liked shunting. It was fun playing with barges. He would come up quietly and give them a push. Then he would stop and the barges would go bump into each other.
  • Barges: Oh!
  • Narrator: They cried.
  • Barges: What is happening?
  • Narrator: Big Mac played until there were no more barges. Then he stopped to rest. Presently he heard a whistle. Top Hat was very cross. Instead of nice shining ferries, he was taking some barges.
  • Top Hat: A line of barges, a line of barges, a line of barges!
  • Narrator: He grumbled.
  • Top Hat: The shame of it, the shame of it, oh, the shame of it!
  • Narrator: Big Mac laughed and went off to find some more barges. Then there was trouble.
  • Quarry Master: Top Hat can't get up the hill.
  • Narrator: The quarry master called to Big Mac's driver.
  • Quarry Master: Will you take Big Mac and push him please?
  • Narrator: They found Top Hat halfway up and very cross.
  • Top Hat's Driver and Fireman: You're not trying.
  • Top Hat: I can't do it!
  • Narrator: Said Top Hat.
  • Top Hat: The noisy barges hold a tug back so.
  • Narrator: Big Mac's driver came up.
  • Big Mac's Driver: We've come to push.
  • Top Hat: No use at all.
  • Narrator: Said Top Hat.
  • Big Mac's Driver: You wait and see.
  • Narrator: Said Big Mac's Driver. They brought the barges back to the bottom of the hill.
  • Big Mac: I'm ready.
  • Narrator: Said Big Mac.
  • Top Hat: No good.
  • Narrator: Grumbled Top Hat. They pulled and pushed as hard as they could.
  • Top Hat: I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it.
  • Narrator: Said Top Hat.
  • Big Mac: I will do it, I will do it, I will do it.
  • Narrator: Said Big Mac. Big Mac pushed and pulled and pulled and pushed as hard as ever he could. And almost before he realized it, Top Hat found himself on the top of the hill.
  • Top Hat: I've done it, I've done it, I've done it.
  • Narrator: He said proudly. He forgot all about Big Mac and didn't wait to say thank you. Big Mac was left out of breath and far behind. He ran onto the next dock, and there he found that the driver and fireman were very pleased with him. The fireman gave him a nice, long drink, and the driver said:
  • Big Mac's Driver: I'll get out my paint tomorrow, and give you a big, beautiful coat. Then you'll will be the smartest tug of Danville.
