Bill Pappas is one of the founding members of The Gang. Along with Terry Mulrenin and Mike Paprocki, his personality was crucial to the development of The Gang's trademark style of humor. Though he's never been too involved in the production end of things, Bill remains one of The Gang's elite members.

Before The Gang Edit

William Peter Pappas III was born September 9, 1984 - the third heir to the Bill Pappas legacy.

Junior HighEdit

The GangAdded by The Gang
Though Bill had known Terry and Mike in grammar school, his friendship with them was not solidified until their 8th grade year at Central Junior High. The "lunchtable gang" formed when the genius 8th grade teachers, in an attempt to thwart adolescent shenanigans, forced the students to sit at lunch tables alphabetically - coincidentally placing Mr. Pappas with Mr. Paprocki, Mr. Ben Palacios, and Mr. Eric Pietkiewicz (Mr. Mulrenin was unfortunately caught on the other side of the room). In any case, Bill joined with Terry and Mike to form the holy trinity of The Gang during recess and after school as they walked home together (seeing as all of them lived off the same street).

Even at this early stage, Pap had a knack for disappearing from time to time, causing Terry and Mike to make up their own stories about what might have happened to him. For example, they had deduced after Pap had been absent for over a week that he had been hit by a truck of Continental Cola. They were astounded when he returned with a cast on his arm...but it turns out he had just flipped over his bike's handlebars (though we still wonder...). After graduating in May 1999, the group promised to stay together.

High SchoolEdit

Pap joined Terry and most of The Gang's other members at Evergreen Park High School. When The Gang reunited after several weeks apart (thanks to Mike attending a different school), they decided to make a movie that documented all the funny ideas they had come up with together in junior high. Naturally, the movie opened with Bill, Terry and Mike introducing the legacy of The Gang...only to have Bill fall off the couch in a patented Pappas maneuver. Bill was involved in most of the movie's production, and was the subject of one of the movie's funniest sequences where he displays all of his most classic Pappas mannerisms (dubbed "Pulling a Pappas"). By the end of the movie, however, Pap had already begun making himself scarce due to being the first to obtain an actual part-time job. The end of the movie was delayed many a time due to a Pappas no-show.

As The Gang entered their sophomore year of high school, Pappas all but disappeared completely following a group outing to the Queen of Peace Homecoming Dance in 2000 (presumably with the girl he took to the dance). This brought about the period knows as the Dark Times for The Gang, as Mike and Terry found it impossible to carry on production of Doin' Stuff 2 alone. In fact, Pap's continued absence gradually became the subject of the movie. Right away, we see Pap's place on The Gang Couch had to be filled with the Panda Bear instead. Terry and Mike then lead an expedition to find the Blair Pappas, but when Pap couldn't be found to make his big appearance at the end of the sketch, they resorted to cutting in pre-shot footage of Pap from the first movie. Plans had been made for the movie's central piece to be a story called "A Hero Named Pappas," but it was never even developed once Mike and Terry realized they'd never get a hold of Pap long enough to star in it. In the end, DS2 closed with Terry and Mike holding auditions for a new Pappas (which, ironically, Pappas showed up for).

Though Pap's disappearance nearly caused the end of The Gang, it simultaneously was the source of creative inspiration. Without a movie to produce, Mike and Terry set out writing a story called "The Search for Pappas," which was sent through e-mail to the rest of The Gang. Later on, they would turn the story into a computer game with RPGMaker 2000. Eventually, Terry and Mike decided to return to the world of making movies with Shenmue: The Gang Edition. This time around, they were smart enough to cast Pappas in the role of Lan Di, making him a crucially important character...that only needed to appear in 2 scenes. Though Bill was only in the movie for those two scenes, he certainly stole the show with his unique interpretation of the character (blatantly disregarding the disturbingly calm and sinister nature of the game's character in favor of a full-blown beastly brute).

Following the successful completion of Shenmue: TGE, Pap gradually returned to the fold and was seen much more often hanging with the guys (as shown in DS3). After graduating high school, The Gang decided to turn "The Search for Pappas" into a 3-part original movie. Once again, though Pap was the central story character, his actual screen time was limited to account for the possibility of frequent absences. In fact, when Pap couldn't be found for the final scenes of Episode 2, The Gang once again resorted to digitally inserting an old picture of Pappas in sunglasses for a shot in which the Dark Pappas is supposed to appear.

College and Beyond Edit

As Terry and Mike moved into college to pursue a career in film production, Pap decided to continue towards his goal of becoming a firefighter (at the end of DS1, Pap is given a firefighter's funeral after his supposed death). Despite dividing his time between classes, training, and several part-time jobs, Pap was still able to contribute to Gang productions when he could, making smaller appearances in DS4, DS5, Gang Wars, and reprising the role of Lan Di for Shenmue II: TGE. Pap put in an extended amount of time when Lan Di was given a much larger role in the finale of the Shenmue Trilogy, and managed to make the time for several on-location shoots (most of which involved spending a lot of time choreographing final showdown with Terry's character).

In the fall of 2008, Pap decided to get an apartment with Terry. Living with Terry made Bill much more accessible than he used to be, and he finally started showing up in more of The Gang's video work. He is still one of only 4 people to have appeared at least once in every movie (the others being Terry, Mike, and Jakes Mulrenin). Bill currently works as an ER technician at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, and on Christmas Eve of 2009, he proposed to his girlfriend, Niki Pochopien. As they begin planning the wedding, Bill decided that Terry, Mike and Jay would all stand up as "best men," claiming he would not choose one over the others.

As A Character Edit

Like most of The Gang, Bill has most often played himself in the movies.

In The GangverseEdit

As shown in DS4's "Origin of The Gang," young Billy Pappas was drawn into a fight between Terry and Mike which led to the beginning of their friendship. He appears alongside his two friends in Doin' Stuff as the more laid back personality of the group, pretty much just going with the flow of things...which often meant flowing in a different direction. Pap is shown to have a knack for disappearing - at one point, he rushes off to space to lead an assault on the Death Star before Mike and Terry call him back. He is also shown to have an affinity for weight-lifting, and harbors a secret identity as Superman. The end of the movie depicts an alternate future where The Gang discovers Pappas in Mike's basement after being missing for years...only to have him die. The Gang attends his firefighter funeral (which looks suspiciously like the ending of Backdraft), but they leave when Pappas suddenly shows up at his own funeral as if nothing happened.

In Doin' Stuff 2, we see that Pap's continued absence forces Terry and Mike to hold auditions for a new Pappas (a role that Pappas auditions for and is turned down). Even with Pap's absence from the movie, a few more tidbits about him are revealed - such as his possession of a universal windows button which he occasionally pushes, causing everyone in the world to see a start menu pop up in the corner of their vision (but when they turn to see it, the menu disappears). This, for whatever reason, amuses him.

Pap slowly returned to the group as seen in DS3, when he drives Terry to Mike's house and later teams up with Jay Slykas to beat the crap out of that same Terry. While on the job at Fox Lumber, Pap was kidnapped by a group of thugs (who had been hired by the Dark Gang to dispose of him). The thugs dumped him in the middle of nowhere, where he stumbled across a village of natives who decided to worship him as a god. Pap decided to stick around and take the throne of his new "Paptopia," not knowing that back home he had been replaced by an the Dark Pappas. When the rest of The Gang learned of the Dark Gang's plot, they set out to find the real Pappas using a map acquired from the Dark Mike. They eventually find Bill in Paptopia, and lead him back home for a final assault on the Dark Gang (in which Pappas calls on the Enterprise-E to come and vaporize his evil counterpart).

Following the events of "The Search for Pappas," Bill continued along with Jay on the path to becoming a firefighter and EMT, causing him to fade to the background of the group somewhat. He ignored a call for help when Terry and Mike were captured by the Council of Elders and was eventually attacked, along with the rest of The Gang, by the Elders' troops. Luckily, Terry arrived in the knick of time to help Pappas drive off his assailants.

Life was relatively uneventful for Bill until one day, while hanging out at Terry's house, he realized that they were "guys." He and Terry pumped each other up and, after recruiting Jay and Mike, ran into each other and blew up. Following the Stalker Boy incident, Bill was invited to The Gang's "Shenmue IV" premiere, where he attended the party as a VIP guest. His attempts to put the moves on Erin and Kelly failed. Sometime after that, he competed against Terry in the Word Association Championships, where he won easily.

A major turning point occurred when Bill moved into an apartment with Terry. The combination of their personalities enveloped their entire apartment in a vortex of peculiarity. Mike was sucked into their dimension when he first visited their apartment and found himself in several disturbing situations. Afterwords, Bill attempted to create his own religion based on "The Book of Pappas," which he wrote himself. His infomercial was pulled from the airwaves when God became angry with him.

Pulling a Pappas Edit

As shown in Doin' Stuff, Pappas has a way of claiming certain actions for himself, as if he had invented them in the first place. And so there are a number of behaviors that can be referred to as "Pulling a Pappas," at least according to him. "Pulling a Pappas" can include:

Pulling a Pappas.
The GangAdded by The Gang
  • Falling off a couch/chair without warning for a cheap laugh.
  • Pretending to know what something you don't understand means.
  • Asking unbelievably pointless questions as conversation starters.
  • Door-to-door solicitations scams.
  • Jumping on a treadmill and attempting to run on it when the power is off.
  • Performing a certain maneuver in Sonic Adventure for Sega Dreamcast during the final boss battle with Perfect Chaos. By making use of a glitch, you can bounce off the base of Chaos and fly diagonally through the bottom of his mouth to hit his brain, rather than spiraling up through the body.
  • Knocking on your door, waiting for you to open the door, and then ringing the doorbell.
  • Sitting.
  • Walking down stairs.
  • Watching TV.
  • Playing video games.
  • Riding a bike.
  • Walking down the street.
  • Opening a door.
  • Sweeping.
  • Playing basketball.
  • Playing baseball.
  • Taking out the garbage.

This is only a small sample of the actions that Pappas has taken credit for inventing. Basically, everything you do is considered "Pulling a Pappas," even reading this article.
