[edit] group working notes / comments / suggestions

As introduced by Stephanie, our group is planning to take a look at the good and bad effects of new communication technology on the way we function and communicate in everyday life. Monique

OK guys, I signed up for the communicator. If you don't have my email address send my a message and I will give it to you. We also need to outline exactly what areas of communication we are going to talk about.

Stephanie

I have decided to join you guys, hope you don't mind. I have classe M-Th until 11:30 and can meet until around 2pm or the after 6 is fine also just need a heads up for child care. C. Allson

How are we planning to communicate you guys? Any ideas to get everyone together? -Monique

We could meet on Deanza Campass one day. In the library or the student center. Times that work from me are: M-after 6 pm T- 9:30am-2:00pm, after 6 pm W-after 6 pm TH- 9:30am-2:00pm, after 6 pm F- 8:30am-2:00pm, after 6 pm Saturday and Sunday I am available all day - Stephanie

- - - - I would love to meet with the group, but I have just one problem: I have recently relocated (my husband is in the United States Air Force) to Hampton Roads in Virginia. So, is there another way perhaps we could communicate? Via an online chatting program? Would that be okay for everyone?

Also, just a reminder for everyone, a summary of our project group activities as well as an outline is due today (Sunday) as part of the Assignment for the week! -Monique

Diana - I am acutally looking forward to meeting in person with everyone else. I believe we'll be able to accomplis more in person and on campus. Doing everything online is fine as well, however, for those that can meet up, I think it's a great idea.

As for suggestions on what our specific topics should be based on, I believe we should talk about...

1. The general overview about what our topic is... (new technology used for communication)

2. Pros about how all of this new technology is able to improve/better our lives for emergencies, personal last minute changes, etc.

3. Cons about how it has affected our lives in both inside and outside of our homes, builds stress in our lives, and takes away from our ability to communicate with one another in a face-to-face experience. (Lack personal time)

I believe those are the areas that we should be covering... If anything, I'm available on. tuesday's and thursday's after 12:30.

Alright, so with the exception of MB we can all meet at Deanza, correct? If so, maybe we could meet one day, get more organized and then inform MB of the outline that we have come up with. If she has any ideas to add or change we can do so and then divide up the work. I have posted my schedual so if anyone wants to purposed a day and time....-Stephanie

I think that a good day could be monday 6-5 @ 7pm in the library would work.

Daniel

Unfortunately I can't meet on mondays... Is there another alternative day? Can anyone meet on tuesdays or thursdays?

Diana

Can everyone meet tuesday June 6th? I am available from 9:30 am- 2:00 pm that day. If we can not organize an on campass meeting, maybe we should meet in a chat room at a certain time.-Stephanie

I can definately meet on June 6th. However, I don't get out of class until 12:00-12:30. Where and what time can everyone else meet up?

Tuesday at 12:00 works for me C. Allison

I can't meet untill after 7 on tuesday or 830-930in the morning anyday or thursday @ 4 or after 7 or Friday from 930-1130am Daniel

Alright, well how about C. Allison, Diana, and I can all meet outside of the library at Deanza on Tuesday at 12:00 so we can get started. I can then email MB the outline that we worked on and meet up with anyone who wants to on the 7th. If you can't met on tuesday and want to meet on Wens. let me know what times work for you. -Stephanie

Computers and the Revolution of Communication

Positive outlook on the creation and use of cellular phones: - DIANA

For children, a cell phone can be a great communications and safety tool. In addition to keeping up with friends, children can also use it to check in with parents, respond to parents’ calls and phone for help in an emergency.

“I gave both my teenage kids cell phones not as a privilege but because my wife and I want to be able to reach them and them to check in with us when they're out with friends. We don't just allow them to carry the phone -- we insist on it, especially when they're out at night.”

Younger children can also benefit from having a cell phone from a safety perspective if they spend a lot of time in after school activities, go to child care after school, or spend time with another parent on the weekends. In addition to being used in an emergency, a cell phone can be practical and an extra convenience, for example if you need to pick your child up early or if baseball practice is running late.

“The camera cell phone is a luxury and very affordable to buy but the there are many advantages to having such a phone. How many times have you been in a position where you wished “if only I had a camera” It’s easy to send a picture to friends or family who may live far away or overseas. Pictures saved on the camera can be easily uploaded to your home computer. Camera phones today offer high resolution photos with red eye reduction and different zoom options. You can take an excellent scenic photo and set it uniquely setup as your background image. The quality of the photo will depend on the type of phone you purchase but overall the camera phone is an excellent purchase.”

Feeling of security - Knowing that your children are reachable anytime is quite reassuring for a parent, especially after events such as the Columbine shooting and the September 11th tragedy.

It brings families together - Families don’t seem to have much time to spend together anymore. With overtime and after-school activities, having the ability to communicate with any one of your family member helps bringing families together.

Cellphones are convenient - Everybody is more busy nowadays. Students are involved in activities after school, and practices and meeting time tend to vary a lot. It is very convenient for a student who does not have access to public transportation to call their parents for a ride when they need one.

“Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold (17 & 18) came to Columbine High School (Colorado) on April 20, 1999 armed to the teeth and carrying through on a plan they'd had for a long time. They were going to kill themselves and take "hundreds" with them, even seeking out specific kids to kill, usually at point blank range. Frantic cell phone calls were made to 911. Dispatchers were still talking to students 20 minutes later when cops and SWAT people finally went into the school and started a methodical search of each classroom - frisking each student, searching closets, and then telling the kids to run for their lives, hands on heads to show those outside they weren't armed, all live on TV. Meanwhile students, trapped and barricaded on the far side of the building were still on cell phones, telling the dispatchers exactly where the two gunmen were, confirming it was only the two. They begged for help as Klebold and Harris stood trying to shoot the lock odf the classroom door to get to them. The shooting was being heard by those on the phone.”

Diana, this looks like your first draft also, is that right?

Here is my outline:

Cons of Email and IM

What is E-Mail

What is Instant Messaging – IM

Using shortcuts in language

Loss of grammar and sentence usage

Message abbreviations

Dangers of viruses through IM

C.Allison

Pros: E-mail and Instant Messaging (IM)

Email and instant messaging have indeed changed today’s technology significantly. They have made communicating with families, friends, as well as co-workers more easily as they are easy to use, convenient, and inexpensive services. “Virtually everyone uses email and Internet browsers, with the results being 98% and 97% respectively. IM is not that far behind at 88%.” In addition, email and IM have also in a way helped us to communicate in a wide variety of forms and ways that we would not have otherwise been able to. “You can communicate in a multitude of forms, from one-on-one personal communication to corporate memos and electronic distribution lists.”

First, we will look at email. So you may ask “what exactly is email?” Email is an Internet tool that allows us to send and receive messages by means of computers attached to a network. In the business world, it can help connect small and big corporations alike in terms of coordinating with different parts of the world. Everyone therefore has an equal chance to get their words out there; not just the big guys with advertising.

Among other benefits that we can receive from email in business is that when emailing, we do not need to worry about different time zones or that the receiver will miss our message. “Email doesn't worry about crossing time zones or that colleagues are not in their offices to take telephone calls.” Also, for those who write English better than they speak it for example, there is no language barrier and since when emailing we must type up our query, we therefore get more time to carefully reflect and develop and are able to more accurately express our questions or concerns.

Our second concern is instant messaging. What are the benefits and advantages of instant messaging? Instant messaging is real-time interaction which provides us with fast, instant response between its users. “While the majority of the usage of IM today is personal, many analysts’ reports indicate that the fastest growing segment of IM usage is that of corporate users.” Again, like email, IM is indeed becoming more and more widely and commonly used in corporations because of these many benefits such as it being a time-saver because for example, you do not have to wait for messages to download from a mail server or wait to receive it in the mail.

Second of all, instant messaging contains less spam; it gets rid of a lot of unwanted messages as opposed to emails which have a lot of spam. Finally, it is important to keep in mind that it is not as intrusive as telephone calls; users can set their status to away message so peers know that they are away from the computer, and therefore are unavailable.

[edit] introduction

[edit] report sections

Cellular Phones today are found everywhere in the world they are so common that people don’t even think of some of the negative aspects that they have imposed upon our country. Cellular Phones have quite a few negative aspect on society such as some safety issues. The effects of mixing cellular phones and teen and pre-teen kids can also be negative. Also the basic overview of the cost and usage problems that plague our society and our use of cell phones. Cellular phones safety is something that needs to be taken very seriously by companies manufactures. Where the companies obtain the parts to build the cell phone and the procedures used to build the phone have been concerns of consumers over the past few years. In an news article written by the Associated Press in 2004 says,” U.S. phone makers and carriers say most fires and explosions are caused by counterfeit batteries” Showing that cell phone manufactories are putting people’s lives in danger by using the “cheaper” counterfeit batteries that have produced tons of pricey hospital bills. Driving a motor vehicle while talking on your cellular phone has also been another hot topic these days. I don’t think that more than a week goes by between the sightings of the “SHUT UP AND DRIVE” bumper sticker. People feel that using a cell phone in your car is very dangerous especial if the conversation has you emotionally involved. When taking in an individual’s education into consideration many young people in middle and high school have cell phones and don’t realize the effects a phone could have on their education. Being in college myself I can see so many people texting in the middle of class. An article titled “Cell phones and kids: Do they mix?” author Bob Sullivan, talks about the unlimited things that teens can get into in their cell phone such as the Internet that has no parental controls so the teen can view any website that please. With kids even younger, they can purchase video games that contain violence and nudity that the parents have virtually no control over the online purchases of a child’s phone. This means that children could be exposed to these types of things at an even earlier age than before. Does that really make a cellular phone having for your children? People that aren’t financially well off are at a disadvantage when it comes to having cell phones because of the price of purchasing and operating. The cost of cell phones heavily outweighs the cost of a home phone the actual phones cost much more up to twice as much and the payment plan can as much as four times a home phone plan. Here is my section let me know what you think!! Daniel

So to reiterate, what is email? Email is electronic mail that is sent through the internet. People use this to communicate with one another online. Most email is through an IP (internet provider). Some of the services are for free and some are done with a subscription service. How you represent yourself is by the style of your emails (1). The quality of your email says a lot about you, unfortunately people don’t always think about this as they are sending their emails out to others. Some emails that are sent to your electronic mailbox are what is considered SPAM. Per Bradley Mitchell on About.com “SPAM refers to unsolicited Commercial advertisements distributed online” This is the direct mass mailings we think of in our everyday mail box. This can be very bothersome and as Mr. Mitchell points out in his article, most IP’s have spam filters to try to filter out the junk mail from the real mail that is sent to you.

IM or Instant messaging is when you can communicate online directly with someone that is online at the same time. This is done in what is considered real-time. As stated earlier, instant messaging is starting to be used more and more in the corporate setting for interoffice communications.

Many people that email or text on PDA’s and cellular phones are using a typing shorthand called text. Text gives someone the ability to type with less letters and words to communicate. One of the problems that is a by product of this, is that people are not aware of how this can reflect in regular messages. There are a couple of problems, some people don’t know what the acronyms mean so the communication is then limited but the real problem comes when someone does not know how to use the correct words to complete a sentence properly.

Along this same line of thought there has been a loss in the proper use of grammar and in sentence structure in general. We were weak in this area to begin with in this country, but now with so many shortcuts and abbreviations it is even harder to correct these problems.

For emails there is etiquette that should be followed. In an article by Kim Komando she gives the 8 email mistakes that make you look bad. She gives extensive details to these 8 topics: Failing to follow e-mail etiquette, Thinking you are anonymous, Sending e-mail to the wrong person, Using one e-mail address for everything, Forgetting to check all of your e-mail accounts, Clicking "Send" too fast, Forgetting the attachment and Using your ISP's domain and not your own. For those of us that do not understand the shorthand there are list to assist us with the email and instant messaging codes. One such list can be found at http://www.webopedia.com/quick_ref/textmessageabbreviations.asp One of the new dangers with Instant Messaging growing especially in the corporate setting is the new growing threat of viruses being introduced through the IM format. In an article; Postini: May a Record Month for IM Attacks, on instant messaging planet.com is this quote: "The fact that IM messages more than doubled in just one month shows the rate companies are adopting IM as a mainstream business communications tool," said Andrew Lochart, senior director of marketing for Postini. "The sheer volume of IM attacks is a dramatic demonstration that we're in an environment where hackers, knowing that most organizations are still unprotected against IM malware, are rapidly adopting IM for their attacks. That being said, IM attacks are still only a fraction of the number of email attacks, so it's important companies keep up their guard on both fronts." This is still a small threat but a growing one. If corporations aren’t prepared we can assume that everyone else is also not prepared or even aware of the problem. Here is my rough, rough draft. C.Allison

For the past few decades, we have been introduced to a variety of new technology where communication is made mobile and easily accessible. With the creation of cellular phones, everyone is able to leave their homes knowing that they will be able to be contacted or be in contact with whom ever they wish. With the fast pace development of Silicon Valley and the rest of the world, cellular phones have made it more convenient for individuals all over the world to go about their everyday lives. Another advantage for having a cell phone is that it brings families together. Families don’t seem to have much time to spend together anymore. With overtime and after-school activities, having the ability to communicate with any one of your family members helps bring families together.

Having a cellular phone benefits everyone from all types of perspectives. For an older individual, a cellular phone is extremely convenient to have in order to contact their loved ones. No one is ever certain when a last minute change will occur or when a family emergency will happen, so being able to contact another individual to inform them of the situation is extremely important. For children, a cell phone can be a great source for communications as well as a safety tool. According to Larry Magid’s article “Talk to Your Kids About Cell Phones,” cell phones play a major role in a childs life, in addition to keeping up with friends, children can also use it to check in with parents, respond to parents’ calls and phone for help in an emergency. Giving your child a cell phone is a great opportunity for them to show you as parents that they are responsible enough to go out and have fun, and take care of themselves at the same time. It is also extremely convenient for a child who does not have access to public transportation to call their parents for a ride when they need one. Younger children can also benefit from having a cell phone from a safety perspective if they spend a lot of time in after school activities, go to child care after school, or spend time with another parent on the weekends. In addition to being used in an emergency, a cell phone can be practical and an extra convenience. For example if a mother is not able to pick up their child on time from school, she will be able to contact her child and make sure she can arrange for an alternative ride home. Having a cell phone for a child is quite reassuring for a parent by knowing that their child is reachable at anytime, especially after events such as the Columbine shooting and the September 11th tragedy.

“I gave both my teenage kids cell phones not as a privilege but because my wife and I want to be able to reach them and them to check in with us when they're out with friends. We don't just allow them to carry the phone -- we insist on it, especially when they're out at night” (Magid).

Another positive aspect about cellular devices is that it comes with many additional benefits, ranging from cameras to text messages to even access to the internet. The camera cell phone is a luxury and is very affordable. Many of us have been in a position where we have thought to ourselves “if only I had a camera”. With a camera phone, it’s easy to share priceless pictures to friends or family who may live far away or overseas. Owning a camera phone and being able to capture a moment that only happens once in a lifetime is priceless. With text messaging, an individual is able to contact another individual without causing as much interference with everyday activities, instead of calling and distracting a person, sending a person a quick message is highly convenient. As for cellular devices that have internet access, the internet access acts as another way of communication where you can check your e-mail at your own convenience, research while you’re unable to get a hold of a computer, and even look up directions if you are lost. With the creation of new communication devices such as the cell phones, the sky’s the limit.

Diana - let me know if this will be alright.
