Cab Over Wheels is a fan-fiction Thomas episode for Season 4 which aired in September 1995.

Plot

Wilbert's first job is at the lead mines. Thomas warns him to follow the rules, but Wilbert, who once worked in a colliery, knows what to do and proceeds to tell the engines the story of Sixteen, a bored engine who worked at a steelworks taking trucks of slag to a place called the "tip". Sixteen wanted to go past a "danger" board and, despite several warnings not to, managed to do so one wet day, attributing it to the trucks. Sixteen's fireman was told to shunt him back, but it was too late: some unsafe rails tilted and Sixteen landed on his side on the ground. He was sent to the shed in disgrace, but, luckily for him, he was bought and now works in the Midlands.

George Carlin narration

  • George Carlin: While Percy was away for repairs, Wilbert was to do his work with Thomas and Toby.
  • Wilbert: You're lucky to have a long line.
  • George Carlin: He told them.
  • Wilbert: Mine is left on the long miles long, with the station in northern, and anotger in lipind. The sea is brilliant though. But my driver told me it's better at the valley. All my volunteers are going in that too. They work but hard, but does take a long time.
  • George Carlin: One of Wilbert's first jobs was at the lead mine.
  • Thomas: Don't pass that danger notice.
  • George Carlin: Thomas warned.
  • Thomas: I fell down a mind at once.
  • Wilbert: Thank you for the tip!
  • George Carlin: Said Wilbert.
  • Wilbert: But, don't worry. I worked in the colliery and know about danger notices. I knew an engine who pass danger notices.
  • Thomas and Toby: What happened?!
  • Wilbert: The engine didn't have a name.
  • George Carlin: Told Wilbert.
  • Wilbert: Just a number, 16, and he worked in the steelworks. One of the jobs he and his friends had to do is to take waste from the works to a place called the tip. Once the waste was brought from the tip, Sixteen had to stop at a sign, that meant danger. The otter engines tried to warn him, but he took no notice.
  • Old Smokey Joe: When the board says danger, you shouldn't pass it.
  • Wilbert: His driver and fireman warned him too.
  • Sixteen's Driver: Don't be stupid!
  • Wilbert: His driver said.
  • Sixteen's Driver: We shouldn't pass the danger notice, or goodness knows where to end up!
  • Wilbert: But Sixteen wanted to know.
  • Sixteen: Puh! I can take care of myself!
  • Wilbert: He grumbled.
  • Sixteen: No one tells me what to do.
  • Wilbert: One day, Sixteen's chance came, the rails were slippery, and when his driver tried to stop him, he couldn't. You see, Sixteen asked the freight to drag in front of him, to pass the warning sign. They did just that are pulled Sixteen with them. They finally stopped to a stand still.
  • Sixteen's Driver: You stupid engine!
  • Wilbert: Scolded his driver.
  • Sixteen: It wasn't my fault, it's those freight cars!
  • Sixteen's Driver: You always wanted to pass that board.
  • Wilbert: Snapped the driver.
  • Sixteen's Driver: I suspected they you asked your cars to drag you on purpose!
  • Wilbert: Sixteen just laughed.
  • Sixteen: Ha ha ha ha ha ha!
  • Wilbert: Just then the foreman came up.
  • Foreman: What are you doing here, driver! It's not safe!
  • Sixteen's Driver: The freight cars dragged us!
  • Wilbert: Explained the driver.
  • Foreman: You come to the office with me! And you, fireman, get your engine back up firm ground before it's too late!
  • Wilbert: Ordered the foreman! But it was already too late. As the foreman turned away, Sixteen's wheels sank, and the rails sank. Small rushing stone clattered away to try bottom of the bank. Sixteen's driver knew that when he tried to move the engine. He only could make things worse!
  • Sixteen: Oooh!!!
  • Wilbert: Groaned Sixteen. Beneath his weight, the rails sank even more. Suddenly, they fell away completely, just as the fireman jumped for safety!
  • (Sixteen falls down to the bottom of the bank and hits it)
  • Wilbert: Sixteen layed on his side, looking surprised, and leaking steam in all directions.
  • Sixteen: Help!
  • Wilbert: He gasped weakly.
  • George Carlin: Thomas and Toby were silent.
  • Toby: What happened go Sixteen after that?
  • George Carlin: Mentioned Toby.
  • Wilbert: Oh, he was rescued, but wasn't repaired, and was sent to the back of the shed in disgrace.
  • Thomas: Is he still there?
  • Wilbert: He got better than he deserved.
  • George Carlin: Smiled Wilbert.
  • Wilbert: Some people came and brought him, and he happily lived in the midlands, but I think he's looking forward to give him a second chance.
  • George Carlin: Thomas and Toby could only agree.
