Calo Amidala (born Calo Naberrie, known as Prince Amidala of Naboo from 32 BBY to 24 BBY) was the son of Senator Padmé Amidala and half-brother of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa-Solo. Later he married Princess Shamara Apailana who became the mother of his three children, Caritré, Cadre and Caramé.
He was a legendary Jedi Master trained by Master Agen Kolar in the ways of the Force. He fought as a General for the Galactic Republic in the Clone Wars. He was one of the last members of the Jedi High Council, one of the few Jedi to survive the Great Jedi Purge, and was a master of Niman, Jar'Kai and a Juyo stylist.
Calo Amidala was born in 37 BBY on Naboo. His mother, Padmé Amidala, claimed that he had been born without a father, though she could not explain how it happened. When word of this reached the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, was sent to investigate this unusual occurrence. After seeing Calo, with Padmé’s consent, Sifo-Dyas concluded that Calo was strong in the Force and could be trained as a Jedi if Padmé agreed to it. Unfortunately Padmé did not wish her son to be taken away for a life of servitude among the Jedi and Sifo-Dyas left with only the knowledge of this amazing child. Unbeknownst to the Jedi, Calo was not the only child in the Galaxy to be born without a father. Much later on, it was suspected that Sith Lord Darth Plagueis, who claimed he could influence the midi-chlorians to create life, was behind Calo’s conception, though this has never been proven.
At the age of four Calo and his mother became Naboo Royalty when Padmé succeeded King Veruna after his abdication from the Naboo Royal Throne. For the next year he would live in the Theed Royal Palace with his mother, now Queen Amidala, as Prince Calo Amidala.
During his time in the palace he had many adventures in the large halls and many rooms of the palace. On one of his adventures he succeeded in foiling the attempts of an armed assassin. The assassin had been hired by the Trade Federation to assassinate Queen Amidala prior to the invasion of Naboo. The Royal Naboo Security Forces were proud of the of Calo and as a reward for his efforts he was given a Palace Guard uniform which he regularly around the palace.
The Blockade of Naboo
Shortly after Padmé Amidala was elected Queen in 32 BBY, she tried to use diplomatic and political means to rid her planet from the blockade of the Trade Federation. These efforts failed when the Trade Federation invaded and occupied the planet. Calo and Padmé were captured at the Palace in Theed, but they were soon freed by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Jar Jar Binks. Both of them then fled from Naboo in the Royal Starship with a small group in the hope of obtaining help from the Galactic Senate.
Due to damage inflicted in their escape, the Royal Starship was forced to land on the remote planet Tatooine. Calo along with his mother, Queen Amidala, disguised as the Handmaiden, Padmé, accompanied Jinn, Binks, and R2-D2 into the small town of Mos Espa. It was there that Calo and Padmé met a nine-year-old slave, Anakin Skywalker, and formed a close bond with him.
Eventually, Calo, Padmé and their accomplices were able to finish their journey to Coruscant to meet with the Senate. Queen Amidala, upon finding that she would receive no assistance in removing the Trade Federation from Naboo, called for a vote of no-confidence in Chancellor Finis Valorum's leadership of the Senate. This action led to Naboo's Senator, Palpatine, being elected Chancellor in Valorum's place.
Queen Amidala chose to return to Naboo, despite protests from many different sources. She managed to enlist the support of the native Gungans in a bid to oust the Trade Federation in what would become known as the Battle of Naboo. Calo accompanied his mother as she personally led a force to retake the Palace in Theed. As they proceeded their way into the Palace, Calo was told by his mother to remain in the Royal Hanger with Anakin Skywalker. He was soon alone in the hanger as he watched Anakin fly off towards the Droid Control Ship in a Naboo Starfighter. As he waited there three battle droids made their way into the hanger, Calo made quick use of a blaster pistol from a fallen Security Guard and destroyed the three droids.
“I want my son to achieve something greater than politics, I want him to be a Jedi”
-Padmé Amidala to Master Yoda
After the Liberation of Naboo, Queen Amidala consented to Calo being trained as a Jedi Knight after seeing the good they could do in the Galaxy. Calo was to begin his training straight away and was taken to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.
As a youngling, Calo trained under Yoda alongside other Jedi hopefuls of his age, many of which he became friends with: Ayala Secura, Serra Keto and Dama Montalvo. Calo showed a strong talent in lightsaber combat and was encouraged by Yoda to exercise hard at this. He also showed a interest in the history of the Jedi and was often seen in the Temple Archives exploring the past lives of influential Jedi.
“Calo, before you master the power of blade you must first master the power within”
-Agen Kolar to Calo
At the age of ten Calo become a Padawan to Agen Kolar, a Zabrak Jedi Master. Agen implored one of his highest beliefs on Calo early on. Agen believed that hand-to-hand combat must be mastered before the lightsaber was, he was trained by Agen in the fighting forms of Echani, Teräs Käsi, K’Tara, Tae-Jitsu and Broken Gate. He mastered these forms quickly and become renowned for his skill in Martial Arts. He was also trained in the lightsaber form of Jar’Kai after Agen saw the particular skill in him for this form.
Reunited with Padmé
Calo was finally reunited with his mother on Naboo in 27 BBY after five years of separation. The two where happy to be with each other once again and spent many days together in the Theed Royal Palace. During his stay Calo had a premonition of him leading many clones of himself into battle, followed by a image of the planet Kamino. Calo thought that it was crucial to go to this watery planet and persuaded his mother to take him.
On Kamino he discovered that the natives of the planets were cloners and concluded from his premonition that the Kaminoans were to clone him. Calo ordered one million troops and when asked if the Kaminoans could train some of his clones as Jedi he agreed. Calo then said that he would return in the future with their payment. He then returned to Naboo with his mother. Over the next three years Calo would visit his mother again many times.
In these visits Calo would became closely acquainted with Shamara Apailana, the daughter of Mariana Apailana and a Princess of the Theed. Over these visits Calo and Shamara’s relationship begun to mature. Unknown to Calo this close relationship with Shamara would later lead to marriage.
In 22 BBY after an attempt on Padmé's life by bounty hunter Zam Wessell, Calo was assigned with Anakin Skywalker to protect and escort Padme, now the Senator of Naboo, back to her homeworld. Over the assignment Calo begun to notice Anakin's infatuation with his mother and realized that she held some feelings for him as well.
On Naboo Anakin suffered recurring nightmares about his mother, Shimi, and went against the spirit of his orders to protect Padmé by bringing her to Tatooine. Calo reluctantly followed Anakin in his search on Tatooine. On Tatooine Calo stayed with his mother as Anakin went of in pursuit of the Tusken Raiders that had taken his mother.
As Anakin returned with his dead mother Calo could feel a change in Anakin and a sense of darkness surrounding him. Calo attended Shimi’s funeral and watched as Anakin spoke of his weakness to save his mother on her grave. The funeral was interrupted by R2-DR as he came to alert them that their ship had received a important message from Anakin's master Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The learned from the message that Obi-Wan had been taken hostage by the Genonosian- engineered Confederacy of Independent Systems forces. Honouring Master Windu’s words to protect Padmé, Calo and Anakin followed her to save Obi-Wan. At the same time their were ignoring Windu’s instructions to remain on Tatooine. On Geonosis, Calo, Anakin and Padmé were soon captured as well and were sent to meet their demise in gladiatorial execution arena, wherein, faced with their impending fate, Anakin and Padme professed their undying love to one another. The timely arrival of the Jedi, and eventually the clone troopers allowed them to escape and fight in the ensuring battle of Geonosis.
Calo, Anakin and Obi-Wan pursued Count Dooku, Sith Lord and mastermind of the Confederacy. Once they caught up with Dooku, Anakin foolishly rushed Dooku with a headstrong attitude. It was the Padawan's undoing — Dooku unleashed a powerful barrage of Force lightning on Anakin, knocking the youth unconscious, and leaving his Master and Calo to face Dooku alone. Calo and Obi-Wan fought valiantly but were no match for the more experienced Sith, and they eventually were also incapacitated. Anakin however had recovered and was able to fight back, blocking what would have been a killing blow to Calo and Obi-Wan. Anakin however was still not enough as Dooku eventually severed one of his lightsabers and then proceeded to cut off Anakin's arm after a quick and fierce fight. Calo, Obi-Wan and Anakin were then forced to watch as Yoda came in as their last line of defence. Yoda and the Count engaged in a vicious lightsaber duel after a show of their force powers where the two proved equal. Yoda was on the verge of victory but let the Count escape when he was forced to stop a large pillar from crushing Calo, Obi-Wan and Anakin.
In the first days of the Clone Wars, Calo returned to Coruscant with his master, Agen Kolar, to watch the departure of thousands of Clone troopers to various battle fronts throughout the Galaxy.
With the onset of the Clone Wars, Commander Calo Amidala was quickly becoming a legendary hero. He was a extraordinary warrior, involved in many major battles including Kamino, Ohma-D'un, Dantooine and Jabiim.
