The Bear Necessities - by DirtyHarryGermany, 7'41", 25 Feb 07, with music

[edit] Not quite as old as Apple's censorship

Meet Knut the polar bear cub, and the adopted mascot of the Free Repair Campaign for Apple 17inch PowerBooks. This sweet bundle of joy is the first polar bear cub to be born in Berlin Zoo in Germany in 30 years. And he was was born on 05 Dec 07, just a week after Apple administrators began their reign of censorship and censuring to suppress public discussions of our defective PowerBooks on 27 Nov 06.

No stranger to tragedy and controversy himself, little Knut was rejected my his 20-year-old mother Tosca, lost his twin brother at four days old, spent his first 44 days in an incubator - and has had his right to life challenged by an Aachen zookeeper and by animal rights campaigner Frank Albrecht, who started a debate in the mass-circulation Bild newspaper by declaring the zoo was violating animal protection legislation by keeping him alive: "If truth be told, the zoo should have killed the baby bear."

Thankfully, the more compassionate zookeepers at Berlin Zoo have chosen to hand-rear the gorgeous wee cutie - "We are keeping Knut," Berlin zoo's vet told the BBC, "He's staying alive." Knut has been nurtured by keeper Thomas Dörflein, who has slept by his side, bottle-fed him, and strummed him Elvis Presley songs. The dedicated Dörflein has slept in the zoo since the birth of the bear in order to provide round-the-clock care to the cub, and was feeding Knut milk six times a day with a bottle. Dörflein has now taken to wearing long-sleeved shirts or pullovers and gloves to protect himself when he handles Knut. But the polar bear cub immediately obeys when Dörflein has had enough and tells him to stop biting him with the stern command "Aus!"

Now things are looking up for Knut. He has already posed for the world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz as part of an environmental campaign, and he's the subject of a documentary series by German broadcaster ARD. A 45-minute DVD thrown together by German pubcaster RBB about Knut has become one of the most popular films of the year on the German DVD charts, rising as high as No. 7, ahead of such heavyweights as "Casino Royale" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." And RBB, part of the ARD network, is already working on a sequel.

Many thanks to keeper Thomas Dörflein, bear expert Heiner Klös, zoo director Bernhard Blaszkiewitz and all ther other folks at Berlin zoo involved in Knut's welfare; and thanks too to all the photographers, videographers and journalists who've helped people the world over fall in love with Knut. May he live a long and fulfilled life, and that goes to all of you, too.
