Narrator: The characters on the narrow-gauge land keep very busy. There are always lots of jobs to do. One morning, Mr. Owl came to the narrow-gauge sheds.
Mr. Owl: A new character has arrived on this land. His name is Mr. Bump. Cat, you must make him feel welcome. A happy character is a useful character.
Cat: Yes sir.
Narrator: Later Cat had to stop by the signalbox. The signalman called out to him.
Signalman: The viaduct ahead has cracks in it. Cat, you are to collect a load of bricks so it can be repaired.
Cat: Right away sir.
Narrator: At the Wharf, Mr. Bump the new character was with a line of changelings. Mr. Bump was blue with white bandages. He had been telling the changelings not to push him, but of course they wouldn't lesson.
Changeling 1: Nearly there.
Changeling 2: Nearly there.
Mr. Bump: Stop that at once, or I'll... (crashes into buffers) OUCH! What was that?
Changelings: Watch where you're going clumsy feet.
Narrator: Mr. Bump looked sad.
Changeling 3: It's not our fault you're so silly.
Narrator: And the changelings laughed even harder.
Mr. Bump: (sighs) I guess I'm just clumsy today.
Narrator: Then Cat arrived at the Transfer Yards. He could see the changelings laughing with Mr. Bump.
Cat: That must be the character. He must be friends with the changelings.
Narrator: Cat met Fox at the Transter Yards.
Fox: Have you seen the new character yet?
Cat: Yes I have. But we'd better be careful. I saw him at the Wharf with the changelings, they were laughing together.
Narrator: Fox was shocked. A character friend with changelings? As Cat left, CatDog pulled in,
Fox: Have you heard about the new character?
Narrator: And Fox started to tell CatDog all about Mr. Bump. Later CatDog were talking to Matt at the Blue Mountain Quarry.
Cat: That new character Mr. Bump is best friends with the changelings.
Dog: They don't want to be with us characters at all.
Matt: How do you know?
Cat: Fox told us.
Dog: And Cat told him.
Narrator: Later Matt met Raccoon at the water fountain.
Matt: Don't go near Mr. Bump, the new characters. The changelingss have told him to biff into other characters. CatDog told me, Fox told CatDog, and all three of them heard it from Cat.
Narrator: When Cat arrived at Lakeside Station, Mr. Owl was there.
Mr. Owl: Cat, you must warn all characters not to cross the viaduct until it is repaired.
Narrator: Cat felt proud. It was a very useful job. Just then he heard a horn blast. Someone was coming. Cat heard to warn them. It was Mr. Bump, pulling a goods load. Cat was shocked to see Mr. Bump.
Mr. Bump: Hello. So you're Cat, are you?
Cat: I'm not talking to you.
Narrator: Mr. Bump didn't know what he heard done.
Mr. Bump: What did you say that for?
Cat: Why should you want to know, anyway?
Narrator: So Mr. Bump purred sadly away. Then Raccoon puffed in.
Cat: So have you heard that Mr. Bump was going to biff into all the characters.
Raccoon: Yes. Matt told me, CatDog told Matt, Fox told CatDog and you told Fox.
Cat: But I only said to Fox that I'd seen Mr. Bump with the changelings.
Narrator: Then Grandpa Abe arrived.
Grandpa Abe: Have you heard about Mr. Bump the new character. Owl saw the changelings being horrible to him at the Wharf.
Narrator: Raccoon was shocked. Cat couldn't believe it. Mr. Bump wasn't friends with the changelings after all.
Raccoon: Where was Mr. Bump going?
Cat: Of course, I've made a terrible mistake. Mr. Bump's heading for the damaged viaduct. I must stop him.
Narrator: Mr. Bump was speeding through the countryside as fast as he could. Suddenly he saw warning flags on the side of the path. He slammed on his brakes. But it was too late. Mr. Bump's driver jumped clear, just as his feet went over the edge of the path. Mr. Bump was in terrible trouble, he was on the damaged section of the viaduct. Cat knew it was all his fault. Suddenly he had an idea.
Cat: Don't worry Mr. Bump. I'll save you.
Narrator: Cat gently bumped Mr. Bump's brakevan, and was coupled up. Cat was very scared, but he knew he had to be responsible. So slowly and carefully he started to pull Mr. Bump back from the edge. The bridge made a creaking noise. Cat knew he must hurry. He pulled as hard as he could, and with one big puff, he pulled Mr. Bump's feet off the viaduct. Cat had done it. He had saved Mr. Bump and his goods load.
Mr. Bump: Thank you Cat.
Cat: I should had warned you. But I was too busy believing silly stories. I thought you didn't like other characters, but now I know I was wrong.
Narrator: Cat gave Mr. Bump a long friendly meow. Mr. Bump was very happy; at last he knew he had a good friend in Cat. Then the two of them worked together on the reconstruction of the viaduct.
Mr. Bump: So Cat, what gave you the idea I only liked changelings and not characters?
Cat: Ah that's a long story. Besides, it's better to be safe than sorry.
Mr. Bump: Quite right Cat.
(both characters can't stop laughing about it)
