In the Jumpweb of the Known Universe, the standard form of interstellar/intergalactic space travel is via ancient jumpgates created by the now-extinct race of aliens known as Progenitors. The Progenitors did leave behind a race of purple-metal, A.I. robots known as Golems. Other major powers in the Known Universe include the United Republic of Earth, with it's capital on Earth, and including humans as well as certain A.I. robots and computers and some alien species as citizens; House Lionheart, a group of mostly human nobles with some alien members; the Mantis Lords, a group of human-supremacist aristocrats; the Horsehead Empire, an interstellar empire with a monarchy and aristocracy dominated mostly by the white, horse-like-headed humanoids known as Horseheads; the Solar Church of the Unconquered Sun, a religion that originated with Horseheads but now spreading to other races; and the Interplanetary Merchant League, a coalition of interstellar, private corporations.
