Online public school casts net in Spokane : Washington Virtual Academy now admits local students
http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2006/06/28/1699239.htm
I am very happy to see more and more online public high schools are being developed and offered. Online high schools make a lot of people's lives easier, including my 11-year old cousin. She is trying to become a professional tennis player and her parents don't want her to give up on school. I told them about the online high school system and they are seriously considering about this option.
Driving course for seniors goes online
http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060721/NEWS09/607210402/1026/NEWS
I am very pleased to find out that driver-safety courses geared to help older motorists are now available on the Internet. I think this offering would benefit the elders in two ways: they can learn how to navigate on the Internet and learn about the driver-safety issues in the process. Online courses also provide bonding opportunities for the families, since sons and daughters can help their parents reviewing and navigating on the Internet. The society would be greatly benefited from the online senior driver’s education course. -J-Y LEE SUMMER 2006
The advancement of computers is a tool that teachers can utilize to help them with their instruction of valuable course material and offer individual students help with examinations. I remember before the Internet era explosion, I played games such as Oregon Trail and Math Crunchers that taught me literature skills and math skills in an entertaining manner. In modern times, technology has developed that is emphasized in the following two websites:
www.collegeboard.com and http://www.teach-nology.com/web_tools/games/
Every collegiate student has had to use collegeboard.com because it is the only internet provider to register for SAT examinations, which are required for college admission. Furthermore, the website offers information on the requirements of different universities along with practice examinations to help the student prepare for the upcoming test. This is extremely helpful because it assists the student in creating goals and standards that he or she will attempt to reach for.
The second website is very useful because it offers a variety of educational games that test different subject areas, which include math and language arts. This is extremely useful because when the instruction is involved in game play, often the competitive nature and the entertainment factor will keep kids compelled to learn subconsciously. Furthermore, these games are accessible online, so kids have the opportunity to play them whenever they want to.

This article talks about a study done of "computer uses of 986 fourth grade students from 55 classrooms in nine Massachusetts school districts." Results showed that the more students used computers to write papers, the higher their score on the Massachusetts English/Language Arts exam. However, if students used computers for fun or to chat, they scored lower. Additionally, students' usage of computers just to make PowerPoint presentations was negatively proportional to their exam scores. Using computers just to type up final drafts of essays had no impact on their scores.
The social impact is that an investment in computers by schools would have a proven positive impact on the learning of their students. Teachers should also start to use technology to teach in the classroom. Another societal issue to consider is that teachers must carefully monitor what the students are using computers for.
http://www.workspace-resources.com/education/cicdesi1.htm
This website talks about the different possibilies of student-computer interfaces in the classroom. This is important because the room must be set up in a way that the teacher can monitor the students and in a way that the students can learn from the teacher as well as the computer. The arrangment must also be ergonomic, private (to prevent cheating), and safe for the equipment. The structures also need to promote the health of the students such as maintaining posture and prevent tendonitis. AL Summer 2006
http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/
RateMyProfessor.com is a website where students share their experiences and opinions of teachers they have had. They can rate the professors in terms of helpfulness, easiness, and clarity. Other perspective students can find out how the teachers are and decide whether to take the course, or which lecture to take if there are multiple professors. CL Summer 2006
http://www.comegetused.com/index.php
ComeGetUsed.com allows students to post the information of books they want to sell and also to find information of books they want to buy. If a buyer finds a book from a seller, then he or she can send an email to the seller with the contact information through the website. The prices are usually cheaper than the campus bookstores when buying and higher than the buybacks when selling. It also allows students to pass on experiences and information about the courses. The buyer usually purchases the whole set of textbook for that one certain class and the seller, who has taken the class, will pass on the notes and test files as well. CL Summer 2006

Even though many would agree that computer technology is a blessing to society, others who have not caught up with trend have difficulty adapting to the new device. This site is developed by seniors over 50 to help other seniors use technologies to enhance their lives. Society frequently forgets that even though computers help many, it also frustrates a whole generation of adapting users.
"A Beginner's Guide to Integrating Technology" http://www.educationworld.com/a_tech/tech/tech130.shtml
Because it is expected that everyone knows how to use a computer, extra pressure is felt by teachers to incorporate technology into their curriculum. It shows what a large role computer plays in our lives and by becoming a part of the country's socialization process. (TT, Summer 2006)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer-assisted_language_learning
Wikipedia describes how Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) can help many people in the US . Through enhanced learning, people can talk to their computers and respond to questions that are posed. The computers offer feedback and how the person can do better. This is an interesting subject presented in an earlier chapter in the book, and I remember it said that CALL can be even more effective then learning a language in a classroom. People may be intimidated or not agree with the teaching style of the instructor, and just have a problem with the pace that the class moves. However, CALL is customized for the person and presents information and learning in many different stimuli.

Now, you don't need to go to New York to trade stock, but we can all learn how to online. Online trading has given the average citizen the opportunity to learn and invest. There are courses that teach people how to "get rich quick" or even software that tells you when to buy and sell shares. Education in investing is heavily influencing the society because it gives anybody access and a reason for people to "gamble" with their money and try to win this "game".

This website talks about the various advantages children can acquire by using computers in "early childhood education." The article goes into detail on the various skills such as learning, motor skills and social skills that kids can develop by having computers in the early education stage of life. Some of the mentioned advantages are better motor skills through typing, better social skills and ability to understand language quickly. It is essentially a detailed report of how computers positively affect kids' learning in all areas.

This article is a piece on the negative effects that students face by having a computer present when learning. The article claims that computers only support certain kinds of learning activities and therefore, not adding a lot of value to the overall education of the student. The main point of the article is that children are being given too much power under the name of educational research and this is actually hurting their learning. - MK, Summer 2006.
http://webcast.berkeley.edu/faq.html
This is a very useful "Frequently Asked Questions" page because of all of the common questions people ask when they are first introduced to webcast classes. Some vary from only being only for a short, set amount of time, only being posted online after it was recorded, or requiring access passwords to view. However, this site clarifies that Berkeley webcast classes are posted live, can be streamed at anytime, and by anybody. The fact that an FAQ site is even available shows that so many people in our computerized society have brought up the same questions and concerns, and someone at webcast.berkeley.edu decided to compile them for convenience's sake. Many FAQ sites on websites have undoubtedly helped out businesses in streamlining customer service and making common question-answering efficient.

This site, which is actually Douglas H. Clement's research paper entitled "Computers in Early Childhood Mathematics," asserts that children at a young age can benefit very much from computer interaction. Specifically, he discusses computer games aiding in child counting and sorting activities; he says they can help in strengthening basic math skills. I personally remember very very old computer games back in elementary school that allowed me to practice basic addition and multiplication tables on a screen. I think our society is starting to introduce computers to children at even younger ages now. - CL Summer '06

Many teachers have been designing their class curriculums around Microsoft Powerpoint. Teachers have been relying less on chalkboards and white boards since it is a hassle to re-create the lecture every single period. Although powerpoints are good for the visual learner the article argues that it is often distracting for the students and is often unable to contain the information necessary for a thorough understanding of the material. The powerpoint should instead be used as a supplement, rather than a replacement of teaching. The main issue that overshadows this article is the idea that technology is taking over teaching, which in some point of views, many people disapprove of, as computers cannot fully explain concepts and answer questions that students may have. Technology is useful as additional course information, but, until more effective and comprehensive software is developed to enable teaching devices to be fully automated and non-physical, teachers cannot merely use powerpoints to replace themselves.
http://www.elearningsource.info/elearning/What%20Can%20You%20Learn%20from%20a%20Cell%20Phone.pdf
Additionally, instead of mere powerpoints taking over as teaching devices, some scholars have even considered using cell phones to transmit knowledge. Because a large amount of people walk around with cell phones, the idea of teaching by cellphone has been considered. As "teaching on the go" becomes ever so popular, and Internet access continues to seep into the cell phone industry, some firms might be brave enough to initiate the first cell phone "class." However, as with any form of technology, there are negative issues associated with them. One, that had been brought up years ago, was cheating, as cell phones have Internet access and can take photos, those students with advanced cell phones had obvious advantages on standardized tests. As well, it has been argued that cell phones are not powerful enough to be a student's only learning tool. JH, Summer 06
Driver's Education Online! http://driversed.com/courses/drivers-ed/California-Drivers-Education.aspx
This above is a link to a place that offers driver's education online. I think this is a really neat idea. When I was 15, I had to take a driver's ed class at my community center for 6 hrs for 1 entire week. It was kind of a pain because my parents had to drive me there and then pick me back up. It was also hard to schedule because I had to make sure that I could dedicate one entire week to this class during summer. By having driver's ed online makes it easier for students who do not have transportation, are busy with work or school, or simply like to learn in an individual environment. It also gives potential drivers who can't afford to give up an entire week more options. I'm sure the students who are taking CIS 2 online would have loved to have known that such a flexible thing existed. I know I wish I did!
Alcoholedu http://www.outsidetheclassroom.com/prodandserv/higher/
This above link leads you to alcoholedu. This is an online orientation that teaches and advises incoming college students about alcohol education. All incoming freshman to Berkeley (such as me) had to go through this training. I feel like this online education about alcohol really helped me become more aware about alcohol related topics that I could potentially encounter in college. It's great that it is online because it allows students to individually explore without feeling the potential embarrassment one could feel in an acutal alcoholedu classroom. It allows participants to ask questions, write reflections, and answer questions. The orientation also forces you to pay attention because there is a test to take at the very end. This online education probably has also saved a lot of lives!

http://www.units.muohio.edu/psybersite/cyberspace/education/index.shtml Internet is changing the way of higher education institutions. Now, anyone is able to attend an accredited college or finish a thesis paper without having to step foot in an university. To compete with larger universities, smaller colleges are offering more online classes and more variety. Also, with the choice of distance learning, many companies support their employees to receive higher education through online classes. Without the use of the Internet, many students say that they probably would not have been able to deal with the demands at school. This article demonstrates how much the Internet has affected our education. Through online classes, more people, even housewives, are able to receive higher education. By receiving more education, it levels the playing field. More people are able to gain the knowledge or training to get the more competitive, high paying jobs. The reason why the Internet changing education institutions is good is because it allows people more opportunity to learn.
http://www.hezel.com/strategies/2005/harnessing.htm This article focuses more on the program TeacherLine. Teachers from the K-12 level are able to attend this online class. It educates teachers on more effective ways to teach and facilitate the classroom. It is able to open the minds of many teachers and provide many methods that the teacher can use. Many teachers that went through this program like it because of the ease of attending an online class. This program is important because it educates teachers. There are not a lot of online classes that does the same. Through this class, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, better educated teachers lead to better educated students. Teachers are able to learn about effective teaching methods, which trickles down to a better, well-rounded student. Thus, this program affects society because the students will end up with a better education and a better chance to succeed in life. LC Summer 2006
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=19387 The article is based on a study of Massachusetts school systems. The more students used computers for HW, the better scores they received on the statewide language arts/writing exam. Furthermore, the more time students spent playing video games on computers, the poorer they performed on the test. Society needs to question when computers should be introduced to children and how they are introduced (for educational purposed, games, etc). OD Summer 06
http://www.creatinglearningcommunities.org/book/internet/farenga1.htm This article discusses many issues regarding the affect of computers on a children’s development within the classroom. One aspect that interested me was child sociability. Although having computers in a classroom may assist in learning concrete subject matters (such as calculus, history, etc.) it prevents s child from developing into a social human being. I personally believe that developing socially is just as important as developing intellectually. Therefore, we must find a way to integrate computers into our society without compromising the development of our children’s sociability. OD Summer 06

This website is a list of both arguments for and against using computers in elementary- level education. The arguments supporting computer usage in elementary-level education include "Computer literacy should be taught as early as possible; otherwise students will be left behind," stated by T. Oppenheimer. After listing the common arguments for early computer learning, the author then shows the fallacies of this type of thinking. This is important because the way that we teach children, especially young children, will have a huge impact on the way that education is changed and how people will use computers in the future.

http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/1206/p11s01-legn.html This article, titled “Contrarian finding: Computers are a drag on learning,” similar to the first one, argues that computers are not always beneficial to learning at a young age. The article highlights Freeport, Maine, in which taxes were passed in order to be able to give all seventh-graders and eighth-graders their own laptop at school. The article discusses a Munich study in which more computers actually detracted from academic success, mostly because the internet was a distraction from studying. This article is important because it argues that we should examine how we are using computers in education to make sure that it is really enhancing learning.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/1319578.stm
This article discusses how schools in England are trying to incorporate more computers into their classes. However, it has been making really "slow progress" because teachers are not professionally trained to use them. This brings up the importance of teachers and how they affect a student's learning even with the assistance of computers. Computers can affect a student positively only if they are taught how to use them properly.
This article discusses a similar issue in that teachers are sometimes not qualified to teach students about computers. There are some teachers who have "never sent an email, created an online document, or even visited a Web site. " Aside from this fact, some teachers feel intimidated by students who already know a great deal about computers. This can create an issue because teachers should be the ones teaching students a healthier way of incorporating computers into their daily lives.

Before the emergence of computer, people will have to go through lots of trouble trying to find one book that they need for a research. Now, people do not even need to go to the library since many of the books are not online, and they are able to see what other related topics and books are suggested by search engines. The new system of libraries makes learning much more easier and therefore makes knowledge much more accessible. Y.Z. This is an article about the department of education. A lot of their computers and lap tops were stolen, but they had a special program on them which silently alert monitoring authorities when the computer connects to the internet. This has led to the recovery of several of their computers and also to the arrest of the theives. This is a great program for people who use laptops and are also forgetful. If you leave your laptop somewhere and someone steals it, all you have to do is wait for them to connect to the internet and you know the exact location of your computer.

This article is about an issue in Texas which involves a debate between what is more valuable, textbooks or computers. The state claims that textbooks are far more valuable, and if their official name be changed to instructional material then money allocated for them could be used to purchase computers. This would decrease the ammount of materials that could be purchased and ultimately lower the standard of education for kids.
Both of these articles are completely different from eachother. One deals with computer recovery software and the other with an issue between textbooks and computers. Both however talk about portable computers since a portable computer can easily be stolen as well as be very useful for students in a classroom since they can take it back and forth from school to home.

Educational computer games

This article is about how schools and other education programs are trying to combine education with computer games. The article mentions a training simulation that doubles as a game that allows the player to do digital role playing. A problem with these education games is that they are no competition to actual, high-action computer games.
I think a lot of people would like the idea of learning through a role playing games. This could be a way for people to get training without feeling that they are working and encourage education in society. However, computer training cannot replace actual training since the computer games cannot provide actual experience. It is a good start to get people interested in learning and this would better society.

This site provides links to some online games that are educational. I think educational games are good alternatives to traditional learning. A lot of the educational computer games in the market, however, are geared toward younger children. This article discusses the use of tablet comptuers in the classsroom as a means of education. Tablet Pcs are kind of like large palm pilots, in that you write on them with a digital pen, yet can still surf the internet and run windows applications. The value in this is huge. The school is making almost 80 percent of work done in the classroom on the tablet pc, and adding a lot of functions that simple pen and paper couldnt do. Also, the amount of knowledge that would be at every childs finger tips via the internet is enormous, it could potentially change the way shcools are taught. At the same time, this could have negative reprcussions. I know from experience that while having a comptuer in the classroom, it is very easy to get distracted, and some children would abuse the privelage and surf the internet all day.
http://www.macworld.com/2006/07/firstlooks/imacsidebar/index.php Apple has recently unveiled its newest desktop computer, the imac, which offers many benefits and is geared for educators. The design is slim yet sturdy, and most importantly, it is affordable, meaning more schools can provide comptuers in the classroom. This is important to society becuase comptuers are becoming a huge part of the world, and by starting children on them earlier, they will be more capable and familiar with them in the future. Also, computers provide a gateway to a vault of information, so there is great potential in educating at a higher standard.

The above is an article about how many current reality competition tv shows are asking viewers to text message their votes. Such examples are American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. This is important to society because it assumes that all viewers own a cell phone that can text message which shows how advanced our society is. In addition, these millions of text messages not only reveal how popular these shows are but they also help these wireless phone companies earn a bigger profit from text messaging.
http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA417981.html?display=Top+of+the+Week
The above is a different viewpoint on the process of text messaging for votes on tv shows. A viewer of American Idol states that it's text messaging is worthless because she could never be able to get through the lines and place a vote. This is factually true because statistics show that no phone system has the capacity to deal with thousands of callers within a short time span. Therefore I feel that this is an important issue because this unfairly gives these phone companies profit from text messages despite the fact that the text message has only a slight chance of actually getting through to the show.

The biggest news for the tennis fan around the world this summer is the introduction of the digital replay technology.
Pro Technology: http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/15113101.htm
Future tennis hall-of-farmers John McEnroe, Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick are among the players who are raving about the technology. They believe this technology will add a new “dimension” to the game and as a result, fans will be more “involved” in the game because both the fan and the players are reviewing the play at the same time.

This article talks about the best player in the world and arguably the most dominant male tennis player of all time, Roger Federer, opposes the use of the computing technology. Federer does not believe in the technology and he thinks the technology is “playing with the players’ minds.” Federer said: “ My big wish from this whole thing is that the fans sort of don't take this as a game, because it happens so rarely that they shouldn't be screaming, 'Oh, challenge that' or 'Challenge this.' Like when there are close calls, they don't applaud anymore because they think there is going to be a challenge. I feel like that's sometimes a little bit of a problem right now." Federer is essentially saying that the computer technology takes the “human elements” out of the game.

This web site describes computer gaming and tournaments, and how games like counter-strike are forming leagues and divisions. Jonathan Wendel has won 200,000 dollars in the past four years but winning tournaments, and he is considered the first pro-gamer superstar. He not only won cash, but a new car, a TV debut, and other product endorsements. So is online gaming a sport? There are teams that play each other, and one must pay admission for tickets to these events. There is similar structure in that there are player fees and sponsorships, as well as a national audience both in person and online. But is sitting in a chair really a sport? I think it still is because although it is a virtual game, there is competition, teamwork, and strategy. I think that the world of online gaming is gaining popularity, and fans all over the world keep up with the news at these computer tournaments. This is important for society because it addresses online gaming as a passion. Are people getting lazier? Is this an excuse for people to just sit around and say they are being active by playing this sport? With more and more popularity, is online gaming good for the economy? I don't think so because there is no money exchanging hands, and the internet is basically free. This is a problem for society because young children start playing online games, and since everybody almost has access to a computer nowadays, this gives more and more children the "dream" to become a pro game player in the world online.
http://www.ukterrorist.com/articles/cssports/
This site recognizes the fact that online gaming is growing, and compares soccer aspects to computer gaming. They both have faithful supporters, and those that have success will gain more popularity and pride. It also talks about how media started recognizing online gaming, and that this new world of entertainment is not popularity because it is not something that is promoted enough. Should online gaming be heavily promoted? I don't think that parents would like online games to be promoted to their children. I can't see my parents approving of any gaming at all. But, is watching computer tournaments online with teams playing against each other making this more of a spectator sport? Computer games can obviously ruin many aspects of one's life, by taking away the time and opportunity to learn. Because gaming can be so addictive, especially online while interacting with others in real time, it is easy to stop developing the spiritual, emotional, and intellectual parts in life that are essential. If this gains more and more popularity, it seems as if society is becoming more artificial, while people stay at home to play instead of interacting in the real world.

1. http://www.reason.com/0205/fe.mg.hollywood.shtml This site warns against the intentions of "Hollywood" and the entertainment industry to prevent us from using computers in any way to access and broadcast digital content. The article is an interesting look into the intense battle between those who are strongly anti-piracy and others who take a step above that and want to mandate these protections as law. It claims that people are willing to trade their widely-open, simple tools of now for a more controlled digital world in the future that provides more content choices for viewing.
2.http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m5072/is_11_28/ai_n16114838 This site describes how film piracy is potentially a bigger issue than piracy of copyrighted music or software. Hollywood knows of this subject, but, as the site claims, few does anything about it. This article takes a hard stance against piracy and holds the opinion that it is something that must be "conquered"
3. One article seems to be more conciliatory in its approach towards computers and entertainment piracy, while one denounces it outright. I don't believe that these two cover all viewpoints of society, as there are some out there who outwardly believe that all digital media and software should be free and there be no restrictions on its sharing. I personally believe that all media should be free to share, with revenue coming from extra features and service provided by the original publisher.

This article introduces us to a program that will help reduce the amount of alcohol we consume. The program is a series of tests that forces the participant to perform identification tasks that make think about things other than alochol. Thus, triggering cells, overshadowing the alochol stimulus. This is very interesting because it can be used to solve the problems of alcoholism, and be a great tool at rehabilitation centers. I think it will also be an easier alternative for those who would like to quite or reduce the amount of alcohol which they consume. This, if used by many, will reduce the amount of alcohol related problems we have in our society.

This reveals the direct difference between the rights of the citizens and consumers in the UK versus those in for example the United States. Also, the introduction of a new Playstation 3 shows the advancements society keeps making. This new consol will herald a new era of video games as well as trend. It will further capture our youth and even many adults.

http://full-bloom.net/icons.php?cat=Orlando
This Orlando Bloom fansite provides AIM icons for downloading and using when instant messaging. The sheer popularity of aim icons (and AIM in general! EVERYONE has it in America!) shows what exactly is popular in our society, and what has caught on and become a staple in the modern teenage community. AIMing is entertaining and also useful for homework, networking, and keeping in touch globally. These icons, which are just one category example of the many many (billions?) of icons available on the internet for free downloading, are entertaining simply when you chat with a friend and see that they have a new image displayed next to their screen name. Our technology has advanced so far that it can afford to add some frills and fun things to the essential communication tools.
http://www.tophosts.com/articles/003450.html
Along those lines of frills and fun, this site provides free layouts and html help for formatting Myspace sites (Xanga is my personal favorite though). Myspace itself is mainly used for entertainment and networking. The formatting is for personalizing your site and entertaining visitors with photos, music, backgrounds, and other images or videos. I'll admit that editing a personal page is very entertaining for the owner as well. The popularity of Myspace, Xanga, and these editing services shows how much time society has committed to personal websites for entertainment's sake. - CL Summer'06
Illegal music downloading has become an integrated part of our society ever since the introduction of Napster by Shawn Fanning. Since then, a peak of 20 million consumers have said that they engage in file-sharing programs, downloading media files of all sorts illegally. It was said that the implementation of such a device would destroy the music industry. Such a controversy has sparked a great debate, as online piracy has triggered action from the RIAA to sue users and to place anti-piracy legislation to discourage its usage.
After the Napster case and further RIAA restrictions, many legal file-sharing networks have experienced an increase in business. The link to the following article states that illegal music downloading has been decreasing because of so many restrictions being placed on its use. Furthermore, it has stated the legal downloading has become a popular alternative for it.
http://www.internetnews.com/stats/article.php/3461571
At the same time, a contrasting viewpoint is introduced in the following link to the next article. It states that illegal music downloading had declined intiially after the Napster case, but it is starting to rise once again. Even in the first article, it is mentioned that only a quarter of users download music illegally while there are still hundreds of millions of files being shared still.
http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/2004/01/report_illegal_.html
This leads to several questions concerning the ethical options of downloading files from the Internet:
1.) Which option do you or would you use to download music off the Internet? Why?
2.) Do you think illegal downloading can one day be eliminated completely?
3.) If illegal downloading persists, will it hurt the music industry or help it via free advertisement and samples of music products?

Is the new Playstation 3 worth it's price? http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=25111 According to this article, the new PS3 is going to be a rage in America. The price of the PS3 will not be a factor to many gamers in America because of user hysteria. With the obsession of owning a PS3, Sony can raise its cost and it would not have a significant affect on sales. Therefore, this article demonstrates that the PS3 has no real social discrimination. Because of its Blu Ray and HDTV capabilities, the attraction of the console outweighs the monetary cost.
http://boards.1up.com/zd/board/message?board.id=ps3&message.id=9911 On the opposite side of the fence, the high price of the PS3 will have an effect our society. This article argues that fewer people will buy the new Playstation 3 because of the cost. With its lower costs, Nintendo Wii will most likely have greater success in market penetration than Sony. Even the Xbox 360 will probably maintain its lead with its superior next gen games and early market penetration than that of the PS2. Thus, the PS3 does socially discriminate. Only the upper class will buy the PS3 while the other social classes can only buy the Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii.
Through the high cost of the PS3, it will affect America socially. It can be seen that though there most likely will be user hysteria and a great anticipation for this gaming console, cost will be a factor that most Americans will consider. Though the first article argues that the obsession for the gaming console comes first, I agree more with the second article. With higher costs than its estimate, the PS3 will generally be bought by the richest class. Unlike the second article, I believe that both the upper and well off classes will buy the PS3, even though the majority of the middle class will not, due to its cost. The price on the PS3 affects society by helping to contribute to the theory that the richer gets richer and the poorer becomes poorer. Only those with money are able to buy these type of goods. There is still a great social divide in America. Luxury goods such as the PS3 continues to be factors that contribute to this problem. That is why the high price of the PS3 is not good for America's economy. LC Summer 2006

The article discusses the every growing gaming industry. I decided to read this article because I used to play video games when I was younger and I am curious as to how they have changed, and how they affect society differently today. The article mentions that over 50 percent of homes in the United States have at least one gaming console, creating an industry worth 9 billion dollars (almost as much as the film industry). It has affected society in that video games are not just anymore for killing, racing etc., but are also used for training for the army, and even taking care of a pet – one video game was created where the player must take care of a virtual dog. Therefore, video games are affecting society in other ways than just a method of pure past time entertainment. They are used for training people to take on certain responsibilities. OD Summer 06
http://www.studyworld.com/newsite/reportessay/Science/Technical%5CComputer_Graphics-321350.htm This article discusses the use of computer graphics in movies and the growing use of computer’s abilities. I chose this article because one of my favorite movies is Jurassic Park and I was interested in reading about the use of computer graphics in films today. The use of computer graphics in movies have allowed viewers to more vividly visualize things in movies (whether it be traveling through space, or being chased by dinosaurs in Jurassic Park). Society embraces the computer graphic innovation because of the ability to mimic historical events, or events that cannot be seen by the human eye (surgery on the TV show House). It also therefore sparks human interest into learning about whatever computer graphic emulate. Computer graphics have also been used to enhance educational learning. OD Summer 06
This article discusses how the Hollywood entertainment industry became “Napsterized.” I think this is important as a social issue because anyone who’s gone to see a movie, or rented a DVD or had to pay for anything that is “Hollywood” related knows that its expensive. Those of us who actually pay, are feeling the burden of piracy buy inflation of price to enjoy this entertainment.

This article is about how people in Israel and Lebanon have uploaded clips of the war and CNN was able to access these clips and broadcast them. This seems to be the good of having a site like Youtube. These clips offered clearer picture of the destruction of the war as they were taken by combatants.
http://www.agoravox.com/article.php3?id_article=4996 - "Handing your rights to YouTube." This article is mainly about the copyright issues that Youtube brings. The user policy of the website makes it seem like users are handing over the rights to their videos when they upload them to Youtube. http://www.wired.com/news/games/0,51490-1.html?tw=wn_story_page_next1 Entitled "Did Game Play Role in Suicide?" this article is about of the video-game provoked suicide of a 21 year old Wisconsin man, Shawn Woolley. His mother said he had no major life crises that could have led him to take his life, however her son was prone to epileptic seizures. She has sued Sony Online Entertainment and wants to warn others of gaming's serious potential for addiction. A similar case happened just two months ago in China, where a 13 year old boy committed suicide to "join the heroes of the game he worshipped." (http://www.technewsworld.com/story/50462.html) The issue of gaming addiction is raised with these two cases. Who is at fault- the gaming companies for creating such an addicting game or the gamers for losing blurring the realms of reality and the gaming world? Are games really this harmful? Should society be worried now that the gaming industry has enticed nearly all young kids?
http://www.pbs.org/kcts/videogamerevolution/impact/violence.html This article says that parents are often not aware of the video games that their children are playing. This can be dangerous as violence, drugs, and sex are elements of some games. Even though the gaming industry has created a ratings system, many parents are unaware of it. I found this alarming: "depictions of violence that are realistic, portrayed without pain and suffering, and experienced in the context of good feelings are more likely to be emulated." Young children do not realize the dangerous mindset that a game may expose them to. The gaming industry has put forth efforts to protect gamers, parents must also put forth theirs. -RH Summer 2006

This is an article about a new software called "CinemaNow," which allows people to download movies to DVDs so they are playable in DVD players. If people are able to transfer movies onto a physical disk, then there are much more chances of mass distribution or further exploitation of movies. This could affect society by challenging the notions of copyright laws and how the artists and producers are paid. Society must again rethink what should be lawful and what is robbing people of their rights to their work.

This is another site that discusses CinemaNow and its implications. Apparently it beat another rival company called MovieLink to creating this software/business. The author of this article believes that CinemaNow will solve the copyright problems of copying or downloading movies illegally. However, what exactly makes this more legal, besides the fact that one is paying a price? Does the money actually go to the same people as if you buy the movie from a store?
http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=3178
This article is about MTV's new Urge music service that uses a technology made by Microsoft called DRM (Digital Rights Management). What this software does is that it limits subscription to one single device (ex. mp3 players). That means that if the device goes bad or is lost, then the subscription is lost. This is to prevent the subscription from being abused in over one system. However, the main concern to society is the inconvenience that this causes. If someone paid for the rights to access the service, then they should be able to play it on any device they want. If someone has more than one portable device, then they might have to pay for more than one subscription. The question then is if this policy is fair to the consumers. Are customers being charged more than they need to or caused more hassle than necessary just to protect copyright laws? AL Summer 2006

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=10040
Piracy is obviously an important issue, which has been impacting our society for a few years now. Without a doubt, most record companies and artists are against piracy because it means lost profits. However, there are numerous Internet users who are very much against piracy laws, not only because they do not want to pay for music, but for other reasons as well.
Daddy Yankee, a reggaeton singer, makes an interesting in the below article. He states that he does not mind if children buy a pirated version of his music because if they are not wealthy enough to pay for a CD, they might as well buy a pirated one. Of course he is referring to the impoverished children in Peru; however, undoubtedly, this could just about apply to any child in the US who does not have the money to buy thousands and thousands of songs, which they could easily download off the Internet or buy off the streets from a black market merchant.
http://www.poormojo.org/pmjadaily/archives/008953.php
Additionally, the below article states that there is rampant frustration regarding actually buying music online. For example, a purchaser of ITunes music is only able to play those songs on an IPod. However, doesn't buying music mean you own it? And, if you own it, why can't you be allowed to play it on anything system you want?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4474143.stm
Although it may seem like an extremely prevalent issue in our society, upon looking at the chart in the textbook, I was surprised to find that the US has an extremely low rate of software piracy when compared to the rest of the world. However, I am not sure if this chart actually includes file sharing, which undoubtedly, due to widespread Internet access of Americans, could in fact be much higher. I personally agree with Daddy Yankee's point of view. If artists want to get their message across, if they want the fame, people to show up at their concerts (which can't be pirated), and to buy their merchandise, they might as well promote their music by settling for pirated music or free downloads. Profits can be made elsewhere besides selling their CD, and who's to say that those people who enjoy the music, won't end up buying the CD anyways? Piracy is nothing but a manifestation of selfishness on both ends of the spectrum. The people, the fans, will never give in to piracy laws, so the only way to settle this argument is for the artists and the record companies to yield to the people's demands. JH, Summer 06

This site describes the recent controversy over protection of intellectual property and protection of personal property. Sony BMG has recently sparked some controversy in the entertainment business due to the security violations their CD's have created. Millions of their CD's carried a copyright protection software that automatically downloads into the user's computer, exposing the computer to hackers. The controversy lies in the fact that consumers are not given told about the software, which lives deep in the hard drive.
http://www.sonybmgcdtechsettlement.com/ This is Sony's own website that gives little detail about the software settlement. There is no apology; in fact, in the Summary, Sony states what they were accused of in 3 sentences, then a declaration that they pled not guilty in court. Also on the site is software to counter the one implanted on the computer, and instructions on how to get reimbursement.
The two views of property have clashed in this debate. Sony BMG is merely trying to protect its artists' intellectual property by creating software that won't allow the computer to generate multiple copies of the CD. However, by infiltrating the computer without the owner's knowledge, Sony BMG has also ironically stepped into somebody else's property. The impact on society depends on just how far the music companies will go to prevent piracy or file-sharing.

"Friendster Granted Key Social Networking Patent" http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060707-7207.html
It has been a long while since Friendster made its way into the news. After being overtaken by competitors such as MySpace, Friendster finally found a way to fight back. It recently received approval for a patent that covers "A System, Method and Apparatus for Connecting Users in an Online Computer System Based on Their Relationships within Social Networks." This vague descriptions basically covers MySpace and many others. By owning the patent, the company has the ability to demand payment for using its business method.
I selected this article because it addressed the increasing patent approvals that has swarmed the internet business. Any method that exist from ad banners to Priceline.com's business procedures are being patented in order for the firm to cash in on its innovation. I find that logic difficult to accept because since the start of the internet, websites have been copying each other and it is really difficult to accurately award a company with the idea. It can also ward off the innovations that develop everyday from people building on each other's ideas.
"Internet Patent Divides Industry" http://www.washtimes.com/business/20030725-101707-9540r.htm
As more and more companies patent their business models, others become more uncomfortable with the idea of making money off patents instead of innovations. O'Rielly, argues that patent encourages companies to hire more lawyers instead of researching. Walker argues that patents spur innovation by encouraging people to share their secrets instead of locking it away.
So who is really right? In our society, is it better to share our ideas for free in hopes of inspiring others to develop better methods for consumers or is more beneficial for people to pay inventors to use their developments?
This effects the internet users of the world because other countries are not as advance in their patenting system and would fall behind after America has patented everything. No one will be able to use an excellent idea if they cannot afford it. Thus ultimately decreasing consumer satisfaction in website usage. (TT, Summer 2006)

"Instead of a limited few publishing outlets controlling what the world sees and manipulating media to serve their interests, now media can be anything that the artist or the consumer want it to be." With the internet, media is free to be whatever people want, away from the constraints of traditionally media corporations.

Online gambling has been a controversial issue since its arrival. However, bills are finally being proposed to Congress to control online gambling. This article talks about how gambling has a negative affect on society and how it poses great risks. The author stresses how online gambling has taken an activity that was limited by location and laws to higher heights: it allows anyone to make a bet at any time of the day. This is an incredibly important issue for our society because the passing of these bills will mean that gambling will once again be controlled.
http://www.lotterypost.com/news-138538.htm
Controlling online gambling is a bad idea? This article points out the flaws and possible consequences of restricting online gambling. The author stresses that controlling online gambling will flat out not work. Passing these bills would only push it underground where there are zero restrictions. This is similar to the case of when alcoholic beverages were banned in the 1920’s and the country went into frenzy. We must consider our actions thoroughly before we make this crucial decision.
I chose this topic because online gambling is growing in popularity, especially amongst the younger generation. More teenagers are rushing into online poker and other various games found on the Internet. This is a serious issue because it is affecting our society in a negative way. Our children are now spending more time gambling and playing card games than they are studying. This must be controlled but is it a good idea? What are the consequences of passing bills to regulate online gambling? Is it better to just let it be?
I feel that regardless of the possible consequences of passing these bills, we must still act. Our children’s futures are on the line; we must protect them by making these bills laws. If we do not restrict online gambling, it will continue to spread and they will become addicted to gambling.

Online Dating
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/3078724/
This article discussed the rise and success of online dating communities such as Match.com. It talks about the lessening of the social stigma that was once involved with participating in these online dating communities. According to this article, the idea of meeting potential mates online is now commonplace, convenient, and very successful. Match.com especially showcases its success stories with an average of about 75 marriages a month as a result of couples meeting on the website. Online dating is an innovation in how people meet and communicate. With online dating websites, people can get in touch with others who are as open to relationships as they are. This provides a more comfortable medium than going out and meeting people who may not be interested in dating.
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/3078729/ Unlike the previous article that touched on the merits of online dating, this one revealed an increasing trend in the online dating communities of fake profiles. These fake profiles are made and maintained by websites distributing pornography. People are tricked into providing their email addresses to others that pose as fellow date seekers. These posers actually con online daters into signing up and paying fees for pornography. The article shows the potential pitfalls of online dating. These can include lack of security with increased anonymity. Plus, the realization of these scams means more than just an invasion of privacy, it means feeling lied to. The messages sent by these scammers are express personal interest laced with subtle advertisements. Once the victim provides their email address, the advertisers feign more interest and ask for credit card numbers and personal information for any number of reasons. All of this poses questions about personal safety online.

MySpace has turned into one of the most popular websites in the country. However, many say that this popular social network has attracted the wrong kinds of people. In particular, this article discusses how MySpace has been attracting sexual predators. This is a huge issue because many individuals, especially girls, have MySpace pages and have been receiving messages from random strangers whom they do not know. Furthermore, individuals who provide their personal information on these pages can also be traced down by stalkers.
On the other hand, this article discusses the positive side to MySpace. The author, Dr. Bowen, actually states that sexual predators are not an issue for people who use this website. His research illustrates that most teenagers ignore uncalled for messages and do not respond to random peoples' messages. In fact, he states that MySpace can "provide a forum for teenagers to develop a sense of their personal identity through communication with friends and strangers." In addition, he says that the real issue lies with the parents. If parents actually paid more attention to their children, then they wouldn't have to resort to using MySpace all the time. This is an important fact to note because most of the hype surrounding MySpace has come from the negative comments made by parents. Yet, parents probably don't have the slightest clue to how MySpace works and what kind of environment it actually offers their children.

“Eve Online Growing at Phenomenal Rate” http://www.ccpgames.com/press/press_releases.asp?pressReleaseID=15 The website is a press release on how successful the new launch of “Eve: Cold War Edition” has been. The website argues that the success of this game is in part due to players quitting other online fantasy games. The website obviously presents the game in a very favorable light, claiming that this game is on the cutting-edge of technology and entertainment.
“To Kill an Avatar” http://www.legalaffairs.org/issues/July-August-2003/feature_hunter_julaug03.msp This website illustrates the dark side of online “massively multiplayer online role playing games” (MMORPG). One danger is fraud, especially when virtual currency can be exchanged for real money. Also, virtual worlds are often plagued by theft, virtual violence, and harassment. Often, hackers can use their knowledge of programming to control other players or make themselves more powerful by addition ammunition and lifespan. In violent games, irresponsible players can kill other players instead of killing the targets that the makers of the game have set up.
MMORPGs offer a “fantasy world” to gamers, but social issues such as security, fraud, and crime still exist in this alternate reality. Game makers and perhaps courts will eventually have to decide on how the law will work in virtual worlds. Online games often go wrong because when people are behind a computer screen, they will do things that they normally wouldn’t do because they are relatively anonymous. This psychological effect is an important aspect that we will need to consider as all online forms of entertainment become increasingly popular. This issue is important because as technology improves entertainment to become more interactive, immersing, and interesting, we must also be aware of dangers that mimic real-world crime.

The article above addresses the issue of computers playing a larger role in education and information-giving. It is not exactly talking about people taking classes in virtual schools. However, it explains that over time computers will gradually incorporate more and more knowledge that will make computer technology an extremely dominating force in society. Because computers are becoming more "educated" and gaining more knowledge, people will shift even more of their own responsibilities over to computers. This may affect society's quality of education because people may depend on computers to do too many of their tasks.
The University of Phoenix is a school that is based online and offers people the opportunity to earn their degree strictly by attending online classes. However, the website listed above is an anti-University of Phoenix site (as demonstrated by its name). It lists multiple reasons why the online university program "sucks": bad customer service, problems with financial aid, and poor quality of online classmates. This is a very interesting and important site because it offers its audience insight into some of the major problems with the online education offered at UOP (University of Phoenix).

The article above is an update about Party Poker's progress and hopes for the future. If you did not already know, Party Poker is one of the internet's largest poker gambling websites. Mitch Garber is a chief executive for the company, PartyGaming, which runs Party Poker. In this article, he says that he is very happy with the progress that Party Poker is making. The site had a 49% increase in revenues from just the last three months. PartyGaming is now looking to expand and do business in foreign countries.
PartyGaming is obviously in favor of online gambling because it relies on it for income. Online gambling is a growing trend that is progressing because of sites such as Party Poker or PokerStars. Our society just needs to make sure that it does not abuse these gambling sites by wasting away their money and becoming addicted to online poker.

The Department of Justice has ruled that BetOnSports, an online company, has to shut down all of its online poker and casino websites. BetOnSports was supposedly guilty of money laundering and this decision to shut it down may have an impact on other online poker websites. However, BetOnSports is going to try to appeal this decision.

http://www.mpaa.org/piracy_WhoPiracyHurts.asp Directly from the Motion Picture Association themselves, this website highlights exactly who is harmed when a person downloads a movie. Posting websites like this and showing several commercials in the movie theater condemning illegal downloaders have helped make movie downloading a smaller problem than music downloading.
http://nymag.com/nymetro/movies/columns/hollywood/n_8677/index.html This website scolds the movie industry for labelling the downloaders as pirates. Because illegal downloading will always happen, instead of alienating customers, they might as well offer movies at a good price online. Some companies have started doing this by allowing you to download a movie, and then it automatically erases from your computer after a certain amount of time. As the years pass, there will definitely be comparisons between how the movie industry and music industry handle this problem

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1536695/07192006/id_0.jhtml?headlines=true The site talked about a lawsuit filed against Youtube by Robert Tur, a journalist, who claims the site houses videos posted by people who did not secure the right to post such videos. Tur is angry about a video he shot of the LA riots in April 1992 that are posted on the site without his consent. Youtube claims it abides by the laws and took down such images. Tur, however, said that with different search terms, one can still view such videos. The article discusses the important conflict between copyright versus freedom of consumers to view online content. Youtube is similar to Napster, in that it allows sharing of video files. Copyright violations are likely to occur, should Youtube be responsible for illegal actions of its users?
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/features/columnists/sfl-ralph23jul23,0,6605703.column?coll=sfla-features-col “YouTube, ITube, We all tube” discusses the popularity of the site, and how the site is a true testament to how technology and computers have merged to create a site where people can share videos. Videos about the war between Israel and Hezbollah have even showed up on the site, allowing viewers to venture into that part of the world. Youtube has helped spread knowledge and revolutionized communication. Youtube has even helped arouse interest in music artists and television shows. Is such a site ultimately helpful or harmful to an artist? Are artists not being properly rewarded for their hard work?

A student made User Interface known as linux is now used by Hollywood as its main interface, for special effects, editing, and animation due to the fact that it is more stable and runs programs without all the Windows clutter. Because of the entertianments dependance on technology now and days it does not take big business and large number of programmers ot make an impact.
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/0,39020351,2122354,00.htm
It seems as though anything popular can now be bought. This shows how programs can be bought and used by someone else as their own unlike an artist's work who remains always their own.
They do not represent all th sides facing society because human made programs take ont he form of the intellectual property. Property in society faces many issues of ownership, use, and so much more. I am glad that a student made program was able to make it so big because it gives hope to those of us who do not work for the big companies and still want to make a difference.

THis article discusses that young boys tend to spend a lot of their free time playing violent computer games. Boys generally spned more time playing these games than girls do. Parents are worried about the impact these violent games will have on their children. Children that are drawn to these type of games at a young age will be more vulnerable to their effects later on.
http://www.pbs.org/kcts/videogamerevolution/impact/myths.html
This website sponsored by PBS argues that computer games are not what is causing the violence in our youth. The article tries to disprove various "myths" about video games such as it creates a violent youth, they aren't played as much by girls, and they desensitize the children.
I feel like this debt can rage on and on and in the end I believe it is a case that is to be determined on an individual bases. Some children are probably more prone to violence and others are not and video games don't have anything to do with it. We can point the blame for violence to just about anything. For example, before the Columbine shooting the two boys went bowling, but we don't blame bowling for youth violence. Computer and video games are simply a form of entertainment just like movies. If parents are concerned about their children they should just prohibit their playing time. P.P. Summer '06
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/15/AR2005101500218_pf.html This site talks about the problems with computer games and the emergence of detox clinics for people who are “gameaholics”. Some of the social issues that computer games brings to society is that people stop socializing with people face to face they use all of their time playing and communicating with computers this causes the disappearance of social net works for some people. Another issue is that since people are so addicted to computers they do not have time to do other things in their life. This means that students will do badly in school and some people will lose their jobs. Y.Z. Summer 2006 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/15/AR2005101500218_pf.html This website talks about how computer games can benefit society. It discusses the vision of a new generation of computer games that allows people to solve world problems. For example there are contests in coming up with a computer game that fight the genocide in Darfur. There are also other games that promote international good will or the United Nation’s World Food Program. This new generation of computer games shows that computer games can be serious and beneficial to society. Y.Z. Summer 2006 These two articles had opposing views of computer games, one of them talks about the issues and problems it brings to society and the other talks about how it can benefit society. I think that for the first case we should not say that computer games are all bad because it is in a way a cheap way of entertainment and it provides some sort of relieve from the everyday stress. I think it is how much a person play that is the issue, as long as a person does not become addicted to computer games they can play it for fun just as watching T.V. or doing other enjoyable things. I agree with the second article that computer games can benefit society, other than the ones mentioned in the article we can also consider children playing with computer games that they can learn at the same time. I think that regardless of how useful or beneficial the computer games are we should still be careful of how much people play. At the same time we should not say that all computer games are bad, I think we need to examine this issue on a case-by-case basis. On a grander scale computer games, like other technology has benefited computer greatly however that benefit came with a price in this case social issues like addiction. Y.Z. 2006

This article discusses how people are purchasing mobile computers not for just doing work on the road, but playing games watching movies and listening to music. Lap top computers are great for these things because they have a relatively long battery life and they can be used for many things unlike portable dvd players, mp3 players, or hand held video games, which are each dedicated to one thing.
This article describes the new nokia N70 which got ranked the Best Mobile Entertainment Handset. This is a phone that has capabilities to do many things. Things such as playing music, taking pictures and short videos, web browsing and email. This phone is more than a phone it is a fully loaded travel companion.
Both of these articles have one thing in common. They talk about one device that is equipped with the capability to do many different things. They are both very useful because they allow so many things to be done with just one unit to carry around with you. Instead of filling up a bag with an ipod, a phone, a portable dvd player, and a lap top, you have everything located in one place.

This website is a small report about fee-based downloading options are how they are still growing. At this point, fee-based options aren't reaching enough market share, but in due time society will be penetrated and there will be more people paying-per-download for music.
This website states that Big Music would be better-off to make more profits if p2p networks weren't around. However, fee-based options are arising and the "a la carte" method of pay-per-download is catching onto a lot of new downloaders, thus letting the artists still be paid per song.

http://ipf.pokerworks.com/online-poker-articles/security-risks-on-playing-online/3807
Though online poker is fun and convenient, there are security risks to it. Not only is there the problem of hackers trying to know your hand, there could also be people trying to get your credit card information and passwords. Online poker's popularity is increasing, but that opens up more risks for people and their private information. Caught up in the entertaining aspect of online poker and being at an online casino, people may not be aware that they are vulnerable. At a real casino, people can see what is happening around them, but at an online casino, it is harder to see what is happening through the Internet. One needs to be careful with spyware since online poker is another outlet for hackers to get in.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4603351.stm
Another problem with online poker is its addictive quality. With online poker, people have a fast and easy access to the game. Though online poker is not the root of the addiction, it helps bring it out. It gives the addiction a chance to surface because it has made it too convenient to place a bet. People are becoming more and more into the trend and an gambling problem could cause a huge disturbance in their personal lives. With online poker, it is also hard to feel how much money is actually coming in or out since they are numbers on a screen. People may not be aware of their wins or losses, and that could hurt their bank accounts. An increase of gambling addicts is not good for the economy and definitely not good for society.

The tool has correctly identified 125 cases since 1997. Sadly, we don't know what to make of this data because we don't know the total number of times used. However, as mentioned, this is a great tool for the police. Although it takes sometime for the lab results to return, it is accurate in its use.

The Hong Kong government has started using Boy Scouts and other adolescent youths in spying on Internet users. Because violating copyrights has always been considered a crime online and has been on the rise for the past few years, especially in China, the HK government has decided to crack down on these incidents in order to protect the entertainment industry. Although US officials have declined that they will obligate any youths in America to take part in such spying, the HK government has stated that by educating the young and using them to fight crime, they are not only protecting the future of the entertainment industry, but also ensuring that the children grow up to be honest citizens.
I feel that the method employed by Hong Kong is certainly radical and may have the potential for being quite successful. Although there are some quirks that need to be worked out, by using children, the HK government is directly teaching children the consequences to breaking the law at the age at which they are most vulnerable to these issues.

Hackers, allegedly from Brazil, confused databases by bypassing a screening process that normally checks for authorization to change the appearance of certain websites. As of right now, the hackers have done nothing but deface the websites; however there is extreme potential for harm. This article just goes to show that there are continuous gaps in Internet security, and that the hacking can originate from just about anywhere at anytime.
With hacking as prevalent as ever, it raises the issue of whether or not there will be a new phase of viruses and hackers. As more complex technology is developed and hackers accordingly become smarter, this increases potential risks for the future.

This article discusses the question of how younger people learn and the consequences of distractions while learning. New studies are showing that having a television or comptuer on is not only a distraction while a student is learning the present material, but can also effect how one learns later in life. This is a huge issue for youth today becuase things like television and music are huge integrated parts of peoples lives. A study done by Kaiser shows that students on average spend over 6 and 1/2 hours a day either watching tv, listening to music, or surfing the computer. The efects could be disasterous.
http://coe.sdsu.edu/eet/articles/musiclearning/index.htm This article poses an opposite view. It talks about listening to music on the comptuer not as a distraction, but as a benefit. The article claims that listening to music while studying acutally increases the IQ of a student, rather than impeding learning down the road.
In my opinion, I enjoy listening to music on the comptuer while studying. The thing is that if it a song i know or have listened to before, becuase i simply carry on with what I am doing. If it is a song where I have never heard the words, i try to figure out what is going on, and then i can be distracted. I think that music while learning is important to society now more than ever becuase of computers and technologies. With things like laptops and Ipods, people can listen to music virtually anywhere, with much greater ease then ever before. Becuase of the ease of music and other distractions provided by new technologies, we need to be aware of the benefits as well as the consequences now more than ever.

This website is a criminal buster site for those who want to report identity theft over the phone. I chose this site because my parents have received phone calls from criminals attempting to commit the crime of identity theft. Phone calls are one of the more common ways criminals achieve identity theft. A person can disguise themeselves as a representative from a credit card company and ask for personal information. Is there any way to prevent this from happening? How can we educate the public on being prepared? Is it business' and the government responsbility to prevent this from hapenning, or should it be the responsibility of the individual.
Because there are many forms of identity theft, these two examples do not cover all types. However, they both cover the issue of identity theft thoroughly. Because there is no sign of it slowing down, it is important that the government take serious action now, before it becomes an epidemic. - OD Summer 06

This article gives a staggering figure for potential online customers: 48 percent of the buyers on Ebay have experienced some sort of “problems” in their transactions. The article also warns Ebay customers to be more “careful” and do more research to look out for the potential fraudulent merchant.
From my experience, if you are careful enough and use your "common sense," you would be able to navigate your way through Ebay smoothly. You will be able to find a lot of great deals that you won't be able to find elsewhere. It does not take too much time and/or effort to do a little bit of research on the ebay seller. Things such as checking feedbacks and reading a seller’s transaction history does not take too much time and these info tell you a lot about the person you are dealing with.

This article talks about a Japanese man committing one of the most common crime on the Internet: insider trading. He works for a pubically traded firm and he uses the private information for the personal uses of stocks transactions. He made thirty million Yen in merely one month, from 240 million yens’ worth of trades involving about 94,000 shares.
I thought insider trading is extremely tempting, especially if you have a lot of information that could potentially spin off a lot of profit. Insider trading exemplifies how computer would facilitate criminal activities: without computers and the Internet, it would be extremely difficult to do insider trading because trading stocks at a physical marketplace is much more “public” than online trading.

People would not be allowed to sue those hackers who were trying to protect copyrighted information. Is this fair to the general public or is this an invasion of privacy? Can this policy be abused by people with copyrights?

This is an article about a 17-year-old boy who was charged for hacking into Paris Hilton's cell phone. His punishment was 11 months in juvenile detention and 2 years of being banned from any computer products. Other damages that he has done included hacking into a telephone company to get free wireless access for his friends and an attack on a LexisNexus group that exposed 300,000 customers' personal information. He also had a history of threatening to bomb a school, twice. The article never said if he was convicted of the other crimes or if this sentence was to include all of the other crimes. The title of the article was "Teen Pleads Guilty to Hacking Paris Hilton's Phone." This gives the impression that the boy was only punished after he had offended a celebrity. AL Summer 2006

This article talks about stealing in the realm of online gaming. The argument is that stealing virtual goods online is still stealing and should be treated as a crime. Basically, people participate in games online and earn high skill levels or powerful weapons. Others can hack into their accounts and steal their hard earned possessions. The levels and items have real world value because people actually buy and sell the virtual goods for real money. Through virtual gaming, stealing has taken on a whole new dimension. The impact on society is that the Internet provides the opportunity for new takes on old crimes.

This article discusses the escalating crimes against children via social networks like Myspace, the Facebook, and Friendster. According to the article, children are more vulnerable to pedophiles, teens are being manipulated into giving out private information and photos, and others are having their identities stolen. The police are increasing education about Internet safety and the social networks are increasing safety precautions on their sites. General Internet safety is important for any computer user to implement and be aware of.

Many people who write computer viruses want to prove how great a programmer they are. In the U.K., if a person is caught using the computer for criminal reasons and convicted of "cyber-terrorism," they receive the same sentence as terrorist bombers. This demonstrates that the government is now making a greater effort to enforce the law and decrease crimes done in cyberspace. Even though it's done through remote access, these programmers are beginning to suffer the consequences and punished just like any other criminals. Justice is not discriminate.

The crime that was termed "Mission Impossible" was when a group of hackers attempted to steal millions of pounds from the London bank, Sumitomo Mitsui. Though many hackers are not up on this level, personal information and money are stolen everyday electronically. In contrast to the above article, this one shows us that even with the government enforcing the law, crimes done on the computer are still occuring everyday. The social issue that is revealed is that because of computers, no one is truly safe from identity theft. Hackers continue to pop up around the world and the government only has limited resources and can only fight against those in its country.
Even with the government behind our back, how safe are we? Are hackers in a way justified because they are showing the vulnerable points in a program? If hackers can get into a bank, what's to stop them from getting to us? LC Summer 2006
http://www.crime-research.org/library/Bileng.htm This article explains that as we use computers more and more in every aspect of our daily lives, such as airplanes, education, financial services, medicine, military, and communication, the potential is created for much greater damages from cyber crime. The article argues that the unique type of crime that is computer crime and the difficulty to track down criminals makes the threat of cyber crime even greater.
http://www.crime-research.org/analytics/fraudsters-and-victims/ This article titled, “Fraudsters and victims” discusses other ramifications of cyber crime in an international sense: Bank BPO (Business Processing Outside) frauds. BPO refers to the outsourcing of jobs, and the new niche for computer crime in this industry. The social issues are that these are not people in the U.S. perpetrating these crimes. This type of crime is a unique product of computers and now information itself (such as passwords) have become valuable.

http://www.crime-research.org/interviews/Catching-Cyber-Criminals/
The deputy chief of the US Department of Justice is interviewed in the area of computer crime. He talks about how the FBI and other agencies catch criminals like hackers and identity frauds, and how they are rightfully punished. What struck me most was that he said to operate these sophisticated tools and to launch an attack; one doesn't need to be a clever hacker anymore. This is an important issue for society, because as the tools to hack and participate in computer crime become easier to use yet more sophisticated, more and more people have the ability to perform a computer crime.
This site caught my eye because it helps ordinary everyday people to avoid computer crime. From having passwords, firewalls, anti-virus, and backups to avoiding harassment and phishing, this site is a great tool for beginners to take action and protect themselves in the computer world. It is important for people to know the steps to secure themselves and not just hear tragic stories of computer crime on the news and not do anything about it. Most people like old adults or even young children are naive about computers and technology, and should definitely learn how to protect themselves.
These are not representative of both sides because I provided ways in which the government catches criminals and how we can protect ourselves from computer crime. I didn't provide any information on performing the criminal crimes. I think that these 2 issues are important because society needs to think smarter and protect themselves from computer crime, and many times it can be as easy as securing a wireless network or even choosing a smart password. Also, everyone should know what is legal and illegal, and what the punishments are for a computer crime.

This article from 2002 describes the stolen-credit-card black market how it's proliferating out of foreign countries.
"It's straight out of Capitalism 101 — it's become a big industry," said one high-technology executive who surreptitiously monitors the Internet card markets, and who noted that the market price of credit cards fluctuates daily based on supply — which, he said, is copious. "There appears to be an endless supply of cards out there," he said." "
I had no idea that these stolen card numbers were sold in bulk for such cheap prices! There is so much more supply of these than I had originally thought. This amount of criminal online credit card activity is just overwhelming--just how many in people in society have been victims of this? This only fuels my apprehension of buying things online with my credit card.

Despite the fact that there are hackers everywhere, some programs have been able to deflect all hacker attacks. For example, in the site above, it states how during the World Cup, they were able to keep all hackers at bay, despite the fact that over 21 trillion bytes were transferred. This proves that despite there are so many hackers, if you put enough work into preventing it, you can. It's amazing that during a whole week, every attack was countered by this program.

This is an article from Computerworld magazine that describes various online identity theft scams. One of the most popular scams are phishing scams that focus on deceiving email recipients rather than invading their computer through the Internet. I think that it is important to acknowledge the existence of these scams because it shows that hacking can come in several different forms. It shows that hackers are creative in their methods, and stopping one medium does not always guarantee your computer from danger. For that reason, I believe that hacking can never be stopped because variations of it will continue to form. The only manner in which hacking can be completely stopped is to devise a computer security system that can block access from unauthorized users completely.
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,118709,00.asp
In response to the identity theft crimes mentioned in the first website, this second website describes how security measures are being developed to defend against online scams. it is interesting how there are anti-phishing toolbars and smart cards to defend against fraudulent information. This is society taking the right steps toward ameliorating the identity theft problem. However, these are only technological developments that are being taken in place. Online phishing scams attack the user directly, so I think for great progress to be made where the number of identity theft crimes will lower immensely, user awareness should be increased. This should be the topmost priority and the best solution to the problem overall.
Discussion Questions: 1.) What do you think is more important in stopping online identity theft crimes: user awareness, technological advancement, or both?
2.) Is hacking easier to attack the user directly or invading the computer through technological weaknesses? Which do you think has more weaknesses?
3.) Do you think the government should intervene? Should credit card information be prohibited to be given on the Internet until valid protection schemes are developed?

The FBI discovered that the majority of businesses that are effected by computer crimes end up paying large monetary sums to fix it. Viruses, worms and trojans that penetrate the system are costly to remove. As a result people need to be more careful when downloading information into the system and take protective measures to prevent extremely costly repairs.

Like the first case over 85% of the survey respondents admit to computer crime. However, instead of being infected by viruses, worms and what not, these companies are worried about their proprietory information. Marketing plans, customer data and business model can easily be stolen by hackers. Therefore though the computer serves as a vital tool for the firm, it is also a potentially dangerous asset. The cost of the problem can be reduced if firms put more effort into burying their information and encoding it for safe keeping. TT Summer 2006

Questions: 1. Do other nations have a say in the legal proceedings of other nations in crimes that affect us all, as could be the case with such nations like India or China? Why or why not? 2. Is it the growing lack of activities for our youth to participate in that leads them to hobbies like hacking, or is this trend merely a natural effect of society's leaps in technology?

As mentioned in the text, past experiences with viruses and hackers have caused companies to improve the security of their computer systems. This article shows the evidence supporting the improvement of computer systems through information learned from the Worn and the Love Bug. "For example, the Nimda virus, launched on September 18, "was incredibly rampant," but cost companies a total of only $590 million, compared with the $8.75 billion price tag associated with the Love Bug virus in 2000, which hit before such automated cleanup was available. Goner, in early December, tallied losses of only about $5 million." Since companies have learned from past mistakes, can hackers really be that bad? If they can hack into computer systems to inform companies about the holes in their security programs, should hackers be allowed to hack? Should companies test their security systems with the use of viruses?

Criminals no longer settle for robbing a bank and earning a couple thousands of dollars. Criminals know where the money is at today and they know it is in computers. However, what makes it even worst is that 85-97% of computer crimes are not even detected. These crimes range from military and business attack all the way to “ ‘fun’ attacks” when kids break into companies without the intent of harm but are nevertheless breaking the law.

It also has links to other websites that are considered "safe" for the use of children. This websites warns children of the consequences of wandering off into "unsafe" websites and prohibits it. I found this website to be extremely interesting because I definitely would not have seen this growing up.
In the first website, it talked about how common and how numerous computer crimes are today. It has grown into a very serious issue that has not yet been addressed. Millions of computer crimes that are committed are gone undetected and it is becoming a threat. Therefore the second website offers support and advice to children who surf the Internet. It notifies them of the dangers of the Internet and what to look out for. This is beginning to affect society in a very negative way. If our children must be warned of this issue, we know that it has gone too far. We must begin to address computer crimes and find a way to detect them and stop them.

About 6 years ago, a painting was sold through eBay $135,805, but the painting's real worth was nowhere near that digit. The painting, thought to be a piece by abstract artist Richard Diebenkorn, was actually a cheap painting with a forged signature. The tactic of shill bidding was also used to push up prices on the art. With the ease and anonymity of online shopping and auction sites, committing crime through these sites is becoming more popular. Buyers have to be more careful with their purchases. They do not recognize the pieces as fake ones and pay ridiculous prices that have been artificially pushed up. At least at a real live auction, this kind of fraud would be easier to detect since sellers have a harder time to falsely advertise.

Advertised as books on eBay, the products being auctioned were actually steroids. eBay missed the product and the scam was not caught onto until an NABP investigator revealed it. Through eBay auctions, people, even preteens and teens, had easy access to the illegal drugs. This has impact on the society because online auction sites have made the transaction of illegal products much easier. With some simple false labeling, people can get away with selling these illegal goods. Both the websites agree the internet posses dangers to the youth and that something should be done to protect them. These sites seem to be more from the parents or adults perspective. They don't really mention why children are tempted into this chat rooms and this could be the root of the problem. I feel that restrictions should be put on what children can access on the web and there is plenty of software and free downloadable programs that can allow you do block certain sites. The parents just have to be motivated and care enough to do it.

A while bebefore, people use to send out "official e-mails" from banks and places like that to get people's password. This article is about a program which collects information about crime in a city and can easily match and compare statistics in order to help solve crimes quicker. It has a proven rate of effectiveness in several cities, and originates from an older program started in the early 1990's.
Both of these articles have one thing in common. They are computer programs that rather than cause crime, they protect the residents of big cities from crime. They pool together information to help arrive to a quicker more efficient sollution.

[edit] 8. Computers and Work
http://www.cvconsulting.com/software_eye-cee_review.shtml
This website talks about a new software called the Eye-CEE software. Basically, this is an eye test that tasks place right at a worker’s computer. This is great for the workplace, because anyone who has visual complaints can take the test right at his/her computer and have a report created almost instantly. Employers can also assess the accuracy of potential workers and see if they have the visual capacity for long-term computer usage. The person who monitors this software can also work with the employees to ensure adequate compensation claims for a healthy, productive workforce.
http://www.joe.org/joe/1989fall/a8.html
This website is really great, because it discusses a whole series of transformations that are going on in the workplace. It explains`15 technological trends and 10 organizational trends. One of the big transformations is the reduction in size of data transmission and storage. This would decrease the cost of transmission as well as the accessibility and portability. A big organizational change would be “narrowcasting” instead of broadcasting, where channels and stations are focused on one topic like all-music or all-sports. This way, people have more control over what they are seeing instead of being controlled by one provider.

Outsourcing is one route that more and more companies are taking. With the help of new technologies such as email, outsourcing to other countries is easier and more cost-effective. However, that brings up the issue of employment in America. With jobs being sent to other countries to be done, American unemployment rates could go up, especially a danger for people without modern skills fit for working in the higher levels of the corporate world. Companies save money when they outsource job, but people could suffer because they are being replaced.
http://www.pcw.co.uk/vnunet/news/2125390/rfid-affect-four-million-jobs
The article talks about radio frequency identity (RFID) tags, which will soon replace the use of bar code scanners. With bar code scanners gone, workers, about 4 million, are no longer needed to work the devices and so their jobs would be influenced. This affects society because many workers are in danger of losing their jobs and that would impact unemployment rates and the economy. On the other side, however, some of these workers would be switched over to other jobs that could have more meaning than the repetitive chore of scanning bar codes. This would open up more opportunites and allow for more innovation. AL summer '06

Dell, Inc., is the largest provider of computer hardware in the world. The company is starting a recycling program: Dell will pick up a customer’s old computer if he or she purchases a new Dell computer. Since everyone uses a Dell at work, I grew very fond of the company and I thought they are doing a great job in raising environmental protection. Apparently, Microsoft is working hard to develop its latest software, aptly titled “Microsoft Student 2007.” The target customers are families with children in middle school and high school students. Microsoft claims that phone and online assistance will be offered 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
I don’t know if this software will be beneficial to our society, but I am certain that it will make students’ life a easier than ever. Software users might become too dependent on the software and the assistance provided by Microsoft, that they would not fully develop the independent research skills, which will be very important when they enter the workforce.

Furthermore, the article poses the issue that computers have taken over the workplace. Have they not only replaced humans as employees but also consumed our time? We use computers for work and leisure and their failure to respond to our desires leads to hours, days, and even weeks of recovery time that most of us just can’t afford. The question is, are we letting computers take over?

One of the biggest controversies and an example of the impact of computers on jobs is the practice of outsourcing in the IT industry.
http://business-times.asia1.com.sg/story/0,4567,120140,00.html This article, titled “Outsourcing bad news for US office market,” highlights the common fear that outsourcing will eliminate American jobs. The article estimates that 3.3 million office jobs are forecast to move offshore by 2015. The advent of computers has created a social impact- a perceived reliance on the computer industry for jobs. When this gets taken away, there is widespread fear of job loss.
http://www.angeloueconomics.com/wsa_offshoring.html This article takes the opposite stance by arguing that outsourcing does not cut jobs; instead, it creates jobs by putting the focus on investment in other sectors. The article talks about a revolutionary program that is the current best-selling, speech recognition word processor. The two main reasons that it is best-selling is because the program does not require any prior training, meaning it has already been given the necessary knowledge for word processing, and, for a large percent of the time, it is as accurate as any piece of software can get. Although this program helps with word processing, it continues to show that technology is never one hundred percent perfect. As well, the social issues involved include the usual: fear that technology is taking over every aspect of our lives, the disdain that technology is leading mankind to the inevitable couch potato, and the belief that this type of technology will lead children to be unable to spell correctly. Nevertheless, there are obvious advantages that justify all these negative issues that have made the software so popular.

Often, in order for apartment owners to lease their apartments and other advertisements that require face to face, physical contact, personal contact information is posted on the website or given to the individual. It provides examples of fraudulent scams such as one done with Ebay and offers tips on how to avoid being scammed in the future. My favorite example was that scammers manipulate the URL of a website by substituting for similar characters. For example, paypal.com can be paypa1.com or paypaL.com. Do you see the difference? This article is about how the Department of Defense saves millions and retains jobs by offering their employees telework. One main issue I thought of when reading this was wondering how secure that would be. Our country is always on alert as to when the next terrorist attack would be, that for the Department of Defense to do their work over the Internet does not sound very safe to me. While it is great for the government to save money, I'm more concerned about how safe it is for them to use telework. I think regular jobs are different because the country's safety isn't on the line. I would not encourage having virtual government jobs.

The government obviously supports having telework because they are trying to withhold money from companies that can't seem to increase the number of people using telework. The companies that the government gave support to are government related. Now to support more telework around the country, the issue is whether or not to provide incentives for more other civilian companies to use telework more. How increased telework around all companies affect the government remains to be seen.

Instead of working forty hours per week, Americans work up to 60 to 80 hours per week. Rush hours have been pushed to earlier times. Surprisingly, the article points out that though Americans work more, they are not the most productive, that title goes to four European countries, one being France, that are more productive “per hour of work.” This article illustrated the advent of the computer and Internet and its impacts on the work place. It has increased the pace of work and the amount of hours people are working. Computers have allowed for people to work just about anywhere and because of this, people are working even more. The article discussed how such hectic work schedules are creating more distant families. This article illustrates the two sided impact of computers. On the one hand, permitting work to be more convenient, but on the other hand, preventing close relationships between family members.
http://www.palatkadailynews.com/articles/2006/07/26/news/news03.txt This article discussed how local leaders at Palatka, Florida are trying to develop regulations about the use of technological gadgets at work, such as, email. Often times, sending out risqué material can be accidentally sent to undesired recipients. Companies want employees to be on task and not use emails for personal purposes, but they also do not want to prevent employees from sending messages in case of family emergencies. This article shows the extent that computers have changed our work environments. New regulations must be created to govern new situations created by computers. With the huge amount of information available on the Web, it is easy for employees to be off task. The Internet also facilitates easy communication between peoples, sometimes causing risqué emails to be sent to the wrong people.

This website provides several good buys that people might be able to find either online or in stores. This can be sales that are advertised by the store or come with a manufacturer's mail in rebate. A lot of the time, the deals that come about are because of a misprint by the store. This just goes to show that if companies are not careful, people may be able to buy a product for much cheaper. This website is a way for people to spread the word about that kind of deal.

Games that are on the computer, such as solitaire, allows us to easily play these games for fun. A judge was found playing solitaire during court. This brings up the issue of playing games during work. We now do not have to bring the physical cards, and can play the games on the computers. Though the judge was able to play solitaire, another employee caught playing games was fired. Are government officials able to relax and play computer games while others aren't? Is this fair?

Using the Sony PSP, you can go online and surf the web where there is wireless internet connection. You can play games with anybody else online too! This is crazy because not only are gaming devices now only for gaming, but for surfing as well. This is important for society because more and more objects that we carry around are performing more tasks. We can access our bank accounts, check the weather, buy movie tickets, and even chat online wherever we go. This changes the lifestyle of society in that we have access to all these things in our hands, even when we are outside of our homes.
Similarly, we have access to these things on cell phones. Many people use the internet on cell phones to check scores for their favorite teams, as well as weather and chatting options. However, cell phones also have video and camera features. This site addresses the issue that we can always catch something unexpected with the video or photos on our phones. For example, if you get into a car accident and need a picture of the damage, your cell phone is there. If you see a famous person walking down the street, you can take a picture of him/her as well. Online poker has become quite a large industry in cyberspace, as contestants from all over the world are dealt cards, which they must play wisely, just like they do at a physical poker table. However, there are many conveniences that come with online poker/gambling, as users are allowed to play whenever they want, which, often, is the downfall of many family relationships and other social aspects of living. The disadvantage, is the fact that a player can become addicted much more quickly, sitting in front of the computer and wasting away. Online gambling continues to be considered a societal taboo. Additionally, as with cheating and scamming on just about any website online, gambling online only increases financial risks. For example, if one's computer were to get disconnected, online gambling websites have an "all-in" policy. This policy is enacted to prevent losing gamblers from disconnecting their computers and not having to pay up. Thus, gambling, especially online, has many social issues that need to be considered before an individual decides to participate.

In an attempt to become the "iTunes of publishing," Amazon has decided to sell portions of books online, so that consumers can read books online, instead of having to purchase a physical copy. In the article, Random House publishing even suggested the price of five cents per page and a quarter for "specialty" books, such as cookbooks and other graphic publishings. Social issues that surround this include copyright issues and an increase in file sharing of books, as purchased books are uploaded onto servers for others to download for free. As well, there will be scams to sell books that are not necessarily complete, cheating naive consumers out of the complete version. Other social issues involved include a steady worsening of eyesights as children begin to read more and more directly in front of their computers. Nevertheless, there are advantages, including not having to carry heavy textbooks around. However, there are times when having books around can be quite useful. There are obvious advantages and disadvantages that consumers will need to weigh before buying books online. JH Summer 06

I picked this article because it has to do with one of the most common error-based deathsi in the United States: health-care error or doctor deaths. I have heard of people dying because the doctor's did not have th most up-to-date information about a patient because said patient was in different hospitals. This article talks about how a "proponent e-record" system could save lives. 44,000 to 195,000 people die each year because of this cause, and I would like to see how we can lower that number significantly. If this e-record database is a way to do it, hospitals should go for it.

This article addresses the popular topic of YouTube. Because YouTube is becoming so popular, many people are trying to figure out ways on how to advertise on YouTube. In addition with globalization and the emergence of more engineers and computer scientists coming from India and China, the knowledge workers in places like America will find themselves losing out too, much in the same manner the factory workers are. The big winners and those who get the most out of this are the knowledge workers who work internationally. They will not be expendable.

Then people from the US actually pay real US currency in exchange for the online WoW currency so they won't have to waste time doing the small tasks needed to get the currency. I believe that computers came teach us students, but the need to improve their programs. A student can’t really learn and fix his class at the same time, it is too distracting. What I mean by improve, is that students need feedback and if the computer can give me pointers on what to do, then I am all for it. As long as there are other students participating I believe the interaction would be great. I say other students because it will feel lonely. It will feel like I am not in the right place. Computers are providing more ways for people to entertain themselves during their leisure time. Take computer chess for example. People no longer have to find a human partner to play the game and rely on the company and skills of a computer. This could affect society by encouraging isoloation from other people. Already, people are spending more time with their computers and less time with actual human comany. With the popularity of computer chess, chess fans or learners will seek less human interaction and spend more time playing the game with the computer; that could be detrimental to society.

The craze of fantasy sports has hit America hard. Due to the popularity of fantasy sports, fantasy sports sites are competing with each other to grab their customers' attentions. Fantasy sports has opened up a new source of revenue for online services. People are also getting more into sports and paying more attention to players so they know who to draft or trade. Fantasy sports is helping the economy because fantasy sites earn revenues from these sports fans and there is probably higher attention and attendance at games. With more attention, networks could air more advertisements and they would earn more money. (AL '06 summer)
[edit] 9. Broader Issues on the Impact and Control of Computers
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/p.boughton/interplanetnet.htm This website talks about a future of computers with Interplanetary Internet. This would allow people on Earth to communicate much more effectively with astronauts on space missions. There is also an idea for effectively transferring files: for a “rover to hand the whole file over to a lander, which could pass it in chunks to orbiting relay satellites for transmission home.” This would also allow for greater recovery of information from other planets. In the future, this could contribute to humans being more capable of settling on other planets once we find out more about the environment in that atmosphere. More social impacts would be that humans would be able to learn more about our surrounding environments and thus begin to make use of all the land outside of the Earth. We might even start populating some of those planets in the future if we can gather enough information.
http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~brendy/future.html#Internet This website has a compilation of ideas about how the Internet will be in the future. The ideas are not as dramatically different as the previous website. One way that the Internet is proposed to change is that it will actually collapse under its own weight of information. Because the Internet cannot handle so much storage, it would basically just crash. Another idea is that storage would cost money in the future even though the Internet is free. One person thought the largest change would be that the Internet would be largely used for commercial purposes. People would also have access to TV channels and shows all through the web. Socially, the effect of these changes would just mean that the Internet would basically become more of a business venue as well as an information resource. As in most cases, people usually find a way to capitalize on something that is very valuable. I also think that the more advertising that is done on the Internet, the less money people would be able to save. Thus, the gap between the rich and poor might become wider. Additionally, there could be a loss of privacy if people start to provide more and more information online.
These points of view are different, because one is much more forward looking then the other. For now, I think that the opinions in the second link are much more likely. Humans have hardly been able to communicate into outer space, so it is difficult to imagine files being transferred from outer space as well. However, the Internet is already being loaded with so much information everyday, and I do not think that the capacity is unlimited. Companies are also looking to advertise more and more through providing “free” services online. Therefore, I think the second website has ideas that are more likely to come about in this generation.

Artificial Intelligence continues to grow and be improved upon. AI can now usually tell the difference between scenario A and scenario B so that A does not necessarily cause B. Microsoft is now developing a program so that computers become a more discreet assistant. Using real-time data, weather patterns, traffic flows, holiday and sport schedules, these computers will be able to tell drivers what type of traffic is expected ahead. Also, it will be able to indicate how long the wait is supposed to be. The issue discussed here is time management. With this improved Artificial Intelligence, it allows people to become more efficient and better plan their time. If one knows how long they will be in traffic, they can schedule their meetings, delegate tasks, and more all from the car. Also, it can help out with traffic flow problems. By having this type of AI, it is important for our future because it will be able to help decrease traffic accidents, those caused by man and those caused by the weather.

It is able to look for life-threatening blockages in our blood vessels. After locating these blockages, they will be able to break it up and remove it. With nanobots, medical issues arise. Some might think these computer chips in the body are an invasion of privacy. On the other hand, nanobots can be very useful. It can help with a lot of medical problems that are difficult to solve. Because it’s so small, it can go where surgical tools cannot go. It can detect clots and break it up with technology we don’t have today. Instead of taking blood thinners, affecting the whole body, nanobots will be able to localize the blood clots. This will help improve our lives as well as extend it. With improvements made, it will even be able to help diagnose patients. LC Summer 2006

The article above discusses the current situation of some robots that we have in use as well as the future. I think it's interesting because they are hinting at the possibility of our lives being controlled or evolved around robots. For example, today, we base a lot of our acitivities aroudn the iPOd, the computer, cell phone, laptop etc. They think there is even a future in robot physical security. However, they argue there are still many problems to overcome in terms of the programming of the robot. For example, in cutting the lawn, the robut used to preceive long grass as a brick wall so it wouldn't function. I agree that many of our activities are evolved or enhanced by computer robots, but I think a lot of the robots they are thinking of for the future are not necessary, even if they are plausible.

"Purse Won't Let You Forget Your Keys" http://dsc.discovery.com/news/briefs/20060417/handbag_tec.html The Ladybag has built in technological capabilities to inform women that an essential item is missing from their purse. Even though the concept seems really beneficial to women and society, it also takes away another responsibility people have to remember. As mentioned in one of the discussions, this can create a high dependency on computers (whether necessary or not) and slowly making people lazy from the lack of thinking involved. Even small exercises for the brain like remembering something helps shape people's minds and the purse takes that away from us. TT Summer 2006
"E-Ink's Message: We're Creating a New Medium" http://www.businessweek.com/ebiz/9911/ec1116.htm E Ink is an electronic form of a notepad. It receives news and information like a computer and scribes it onto a folio or on the thin sheet that acts like a piece of paper. This technology helps make society more mobile and again, isolated from each other. Instead of sitting down with a news paper, people are more absorbed into their technological world, especially if internet can be transfer on the pad also. This reminds of the argument Theresa brought from Luddite about how sometimes, things are not necessary and people just use it because it is there. TT Summer 2006

This website describes the future of Ipods based upon its present social implications. It states that the future of Ipods could be infinite, as it could be connected to cell phone use, television, and their continuously-decreasing size. However, it offers an alternative opinion regarding this matter in that Ipods could be replaced by another form of advanced technology, and become obsolete like the VCR. This example identifies the pattern in history where technology continually advances and progresses, forcing former technology considered to be "advanced" toward extinction.

In contrast, the video game forum discusses an industry that will only continue to be developed in the future. I think both instances are correct because our history of technology has taught us that some aspects of technology such as cameras using developed film become obsolete while others such as computers continue to be improved. However, it is evident from these two articles that technology will become an even more integral part of our future.

The company hopes to make gaming more realistic, though it doubts that technology can ever replicate humans perfectly.
http://www.networkworld.com/buzz/2005/092605-hologram.html?page=1 Holograms are projected to be a new technology for our increasingly growing need for information storage. They promise more storage and faster retrieval speeds. However, there are skeptics who think that holograms will be too expensive, and only provide minimal change. Several companies are working to standardize hologram storage, and it remains to be seen if holograms will be a future to information storage. I definitely think that information is heavily being stored digitally, and any advances to storage space and speed are needed in the future. -RH Summer 2006

http://archives.cnn.com/2002/TECH/science/03/22/human.cyborg/
This article, published more than four years ago, talked about how a British University professor being fitted with cyborg technology to “enable his nervous systems to be linked to a computer.” Essentially, cyborg technology refers to small, portable computer chips that can be installed into human’s body to stimulate a person’s central nervous system. If developed successfully, cyborg technology will affect the society profoundly because it can basically “revive” a human’s life, as medical professionals are trying to apply the technology to the paralyzed actor Christopher Reeves.

This article, published today, talks about how profusely technology has been integrating to our lives. The author can’t live without his cell phone and he describes his personal gadgets as “a part of his body.” He also questions if the popular socializing network, MySpace, would be beneficial to the development of the teenagers. The author also uses the word “cyborg,” but in a different context. The author from the first article used “cyborg” as the small electronic chips to be installed within human’s body and the author from the second article referred cyborg as cell phones, emails and other electronic communicative tools that we can’t live without. Both “types” of cyborgs have affected our lives profoundly and both are still being heavily developed. I am sure there will be changes in the technology in the future that will further alter the way we live.

This site was particularly interesting because it predicted that Japan would release technology in glass. They have problems though when the glass reaches high temperatures, but are working to improve that. By having a processor and memory on glass, everywhere we turn will be technologically transformed. This is an important social issue because with such small technology on glass, how safe is it to use? What if the glass shatters? What if the glass is spying on us without our consent? There are a lot of issues that society should be worried about with this new invention because it threatens our privacy as well as our abilities to be independent of computers.
This site talks about optical computing and fiber optic cables. They predict that by 2010, we will no longer be using electricity but fiber optics. By having light pass through crystals and transistors, the speed of light will transfer information faster than electricity. So why is this important to society? Pace and time are important to humanity, especially with the growth of technology. If every computer can perform faster, even if it's just a little, all the time saved will add up. Cars have a better chance to save lives. An emergency across the globe can be easily transferred.

http://www.wacc.org.uk/wacc/publications/media_development/2003_2/the_dangers_of_human_cloning Cyborg technology (humans with computerized parts) seems to be the hot topic of the moment. Most people seem to support the new advances as this technology brings many benefits to society. However, I decided to research further to find some unintended consequences that may arise. This website discusses how human cloning and biotechnolgy can have a negative societal impact in the future. Human cloning can apply to cyborg technology because they both bring up similar ethical topics. In a world where some humans are "perfect," a division will occur among the "haves" and "have-nots" (similiar to topics discussed in the textbook). One of the main points from the website was that banning the growth of biotechnology is not plausible anymore. However the authors make the point that although nuclear weapons were built, humans have been able to control their use.
http://www.orthopedictechreview.com/issues/janfeb02/pg36.htm To counter the arguement I have described above, I decided to find a website with benefits of cyborg technology. I think the most fascinating new advance of cyborg technology is the ability to connect signals from the brain to other body parts that may have been paralyzed. This could obviously benefit many people who have suffered from serious accidents.
Cyborg technology is on the rise and will without a doubt affect our future society. I think the current benefits are obvious but perhaps in 50-100 years or so, society may realize this technology does not come without it's cost. Hopefully, as new advances occur, we will be able to move forward without regrets of a dehumanized society. I think we can do this by promoting awareness of unintended consequences.

We are starting to live off our computers and new technology are being added to everyday things. I also think the second future is possible and may even be something that could happen. As technology develops and computers become more integrated into our lives, it only makes sense that people would look for new ways to use technology. Werner Weber, director of Infineon's Laboratory on Emerging Technologies, is working with a small group of scientists, physicists, engineers, and mathematicians to develop wearable technology. Their aim is to fuse fashion and technology by incorporating mp3 players, built in GPS units, heart monitors, and other functions. Most of the ideas are still in development, but are expected to be on the market in coming years. These ideas are important to society because they are a new way for us to use technology. Who knows if one day these wearable technologies will be just as popular and widely used as today’s Ipods and cell phones. If you were to offer someone a portable music device fifty years ago, would the idea sound as good to them as it does to us now? I’d imagine it would have been a very alien idea that people would not have believed would be successful. Right now, the idea of clothes with built in computers may sound unnecessary, but who know what the future will hold.
http://www.silicon.com/publicsector/0,3800010403,39158048,00.htm
Our society is growing old. By 2020, the number of people aged 65 and older will double. The idea is that we are living longer but have less people to take care of us as we age. Thus, a logical step to take would be to develop technologies and methods for older people to live independently. These technologies include digitally enhanced medicine cabinets, surveillance cameras, and other gadgets and computer monitoring systems. The aim of these developing technologies is to allow seniors to live on their own safely and securely. Since we all hope to live long lives, I would imagine that this issue is of importance to all of us. Some may feel that living a healthy lifestyle and staying fit is a more natural, desirable way to age. However, I feel that our aging bodies are unpredictable no matter how much we take care of them and we need some technological assistance.

http://www.acceleratingfuture.com/
This site is a straightforward look on the future as a very precarious place. It sees that the exponentially increasing rate of technological innovation is a potential threat to the survival of the human species. The advent of nanotechnology and advanced, proto-human artificial intelligence could bring with it greater possibilities for abuse and the always dangerous element of unchecked curiosity. Humans could develop a being that is more intelligent and ruthless than us and possibly threatening our entire society.
http://www.arlingtoninstitute.org/future/Towards.pdf
This article has less of a pessimistic outlook towards the future and instead claims that human reason and caution can lead to positive, healthy growth. Environmental preservation, capitalistic success in third world countries, and the redistribution of wealth can all be achieved through greater use of technology for all. The world grows continuously smaller, and the increased pool of minds that now can be tapped leads to beneficial technology, conservation of resources, and a better standard of living for all.
While the second article seems a bit too idealistic for me, I don’t believe that we will face a definite doomsday or utopian scenario. The realistic option is that, while we are faced with a serious global crisis in terms of resources such as oil and coal, the rate of technological development should somewhat off-balance the losses. While issues will arise with the proper use and abuse of new technology, it will not be drastically any more serious than the current issues we face now.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/biztech/07/27/little.jets.ap/index.html
In this article, I found this description of the mini jets very interesting:
"Vern Raburn, the founder of Albuquerque-based Eclipse Aviation Corp., predicts VLJs will be used as air taxis: for-hire limousines-with-wings that will take off and land at thousands of small airports. Businesspeople, he says, will be attracted to them because they will get where they need to go faster and with less hassle than on a commercial flight -- and cheaper than on a chartered business jet."
Imagine being air-taxied to another state, or across the border! There are definitely people in the country who have enough disposable income to afford this, so I think that these "very light jets" (VLJ) have the potential to become popular and frequently used in the future, given that they receive the proper safety ratings.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/07/25/bikinis.health.reut/index.html
I thought this bikini with a built-in chip that beeps to notify the wearer when there is too much UV exposure was ingenious! It's a very practical fusion of computers and leisure, and could help prevent some cases of sunburn, skin cancer, and heat stroke. I wonder if the chip will be waterproof, and how long it will last / be accurate, because people may rely on this UV meter too much. If the battery or chip were the malfunction and NOT beep at the dangerous UV levels, would people assume that it's still safe to stay in the sun, just because they weren't warned by the chip?
It's interesting that one of these computer technologies is being used to help society prevent physical harm to themselves, while the other is basically putting more people into a new type of danger. Part of me is worried about the lightness of the "very little jets." In the movie "Superman Returns," Lois Lane is on one of these pioneering flights when it malfunctions, and of course Superman has to come save the day. In the future, where our society has no superhero savior, who is willing to take that kind of risk on a small, flimsy piece of metal? Likewise, as I said before, the chip in the bikini could cause too much reliance on technology. If people assumed that the computer chip would always function correctly, and allow technology overpower common sense (say, if they had been in the sun for 5 hours and still hadn't heard a beep warning from the bikini, would they still remain outdoors?)
I think that given the price of the bikini ($190) versus that of the jets, the bikini technology will be more affordable and therefore more likely to happen in the near future. It's also less of a risk than taking a flight in a new jet, so more people will use the safer technology more. --CL Summer 06

The federal government's defense department is considering creating armies of computerized, remote controlled insects that use GPS positioning, radio transmissions and sensors to reach places that are humanly impossible and as scouters for potential dangers. Nevertheless, there are many controversial issues, including the potential for unwarranted spying, escalating fear of robots taking over the human race, and the possibility of using these robots as weapons. Today, wearable computers can be found in restaurants, where instead of servers writing orders on paper, they enter it into a portable computer that relays the message to the kitchen. The article suggests that in the future portable computers will turn up everywhere in society. Some concerns would include what would these computers look like? Would seeing computers on individuals scare others away due to the unfamiliarity of technology on humans? And would these computers become implanted in individuals? Could systems such as the Matrix really exist in the future? Could we learn five types of defense by downloading software into our brains? This article discusses a columnist’s visit to the “restaurant of the future.” Legal Sea Foods is creating the restaurant of the future, known as Legal Test Kitchen. In this restaurant, people can go online and watch TV on plasma screens, listen to Ipods on individual speakers. Paying the bill and ordering will also be easier as waiters carry PDAs and tables have their own card swiping machines for paying. The article was interesting, because it offered a vision how restaurants will be in the future. As technology becomes more incorporated in our lives, perhaps, restaurants will install more devices at tables, so people can multitask while dining out. But does that detract from the restaurant atmosphere taking time out from work and enjoying food while conversing with friends? Will technology make us into workaholics, working at all times, even in restaurants? Would individualized Ipod speakers create a chaotic atmosphere, where different songs clash with each other, creating a cacophonous atmosphere? Will there be fewer tasks for waiters, as self-paying machines become more readily available? Will customers give waiters less tip, since they are not servicing the customers as much? I think between the two, the prediction made about computers replacing textbooks and becoming available to each and every student is more likely. We have been working on efforts to eliminate the “digital divide” at school, and problems of back problems from heavy backpacks have been discussed before. I think the problems of the first situation are more immediate and therefore I think such developments will be more likely to occur. -T.C. Summer '06

Because of the long half-life of tritium, that is the reason why these batteries are able to have such longevity. This type of technology will be better suited for long-lasting electronics and it is also resistant to very extreme weather conditions. It simulated people in prison using regular people for both inmates and guards. I read through the whole thing and thought it was fake. When you go to prison you don’t feel like you are in prison, because the feeling that you are getting out is so great that you forget that you are in prison. You re-enact a like sports club feeling. You literally tell yourself you are in a club. That’s if you are smart enough. The rest are leis to get by the day. At a school in London already, children between four to seven years old are taking computer classes and learning how to type in data for Excel spreadsheets. In addition, according to a recent survey, most children (by four years old) have used a mouse, used a computer, and looked at websites online. With the advent of computer technology, this question of how early is "too early" to let children use the computer (and if this will help their computer literacy skills) is something to consider in the coming years.

This CNN article talks about society's new "virtual living" styles, and how most of us are completely reliant on the features of technology to help run our everyday lives. Although technology has provided benefits such as faster communication and more resources, there have been consequences as well. People now create "virtual identities" online because they feel so much more productive with their fake identities (versus their real ones), and we lose our patience quickly if we don't get what we want right away (whether at home or at work). In addition, the loss of privacy is a serious issue as well.
The two articles do differ in their points of view - the first article feels that exposing children to computers too early is detrimental; the other feels that a "digital society" is inevitable, and that we must accept the benefits and consequences that come along with it. I think the second point of view is more likely to occur, because we're already in a "digital society" right now. We check our e-mails everyday, rely on cell phones to communicate, and do almost all our tasks on the internet. Most of us take the technology for granted - so our turning into a "digital society" is a path we honestly won't be able to avoid.

University at Buffalo just unveiled a new pointing device for the computer, called the Fingertip Digitalizer, which is work on the end of the finger. The idea is that the comptuer can detect moves made by your hand and in turn act on a comptuer (like a mouse), except with much higher percision. However, the digitalizer goes much further: It can detect objects that it is brushed over, giving very specific physical information. The things that it can detect are limitless. The article says that the digitalizer can even detect the shape and size of a human gland or tumor. This is definitely something that will come about more in the future. It is the next step in bridging the connection between computer and user, and opens doors in many ways for new uses and functions with comptuers, right at peoples homes. This is just the first invention of many where computers and humans work more together as one. An issue that this device raises is the idea of a computer becoming to intelligent. With the digitalizer, the computer will start to be able to know information about the user from readings it will draw. Thought this seems harmless, will there be a line drawn?

It foresees people carrying hundreds of digital devices with them on a daily basis. From wearable computers to portable handheld devices, computers will be everywhere, influencing many of our decisions. The computers could be used for communication purposes or monitoring uses. This is important to our society because it seems like computers will become more and more influential. People's predictions show that people are more dependent on computers. Another prediction is that more people would be able to afford these computers. The digital divide will be less of an issue as everybody have access to the technology. AL summer '06

This article talks about the future of wearable computers. The author of this article believes that people will integrate fashion and computer together. He thinks that we will be able to work on everything we need to with the cloth we wear. This not only includes entertainment stuff like mp3, the wearable computer will also act as personal assistant and things as such. He also went in detail about how this is really possible for society to achieve.

This article also talks about wearable computers. This is actually an interview with people who design wearable computers. There is a Q and A that answers some of the question concerning wearable computers, this is the more technical things like how the wires can be hid and how it can also be washable. The oppinions expressed in the end of the article suggests that the author do not think that wearable computer can be the futher. He says that he will not wear wearable computer for reasons of material and the fact that he thinks picking what he is going to wear with his mood that coodinates with the clothe he is going to wear is too complicated.
Even though both article talks about wearable computers they have very different predictions of the future. I think wearable computer will most likely be the trend of the future. At least to me, I hope that technology can be made lighter and more fashionable. This can make computers much easier to use as they can be accessable with what I am wearing.

This website talks about the future of computers and what will be done with them in the future. There is discussion about molecular computing, quantum computing, and DNA computing. In the future the DNA computers are supposed to run a lit faster than the silicon-based computers. There are descriptions about each of the subtopics, and there are links to different websites that discuss them more in-depth. JL Summer 2006

In this article author talks of how the future is up to us. He says that technology has the potential for good or for evil. He talks about how more and more of our daily experiences are on computers, or using other technologies. JL Summer 2006
This article talks about how no matter how many computers are being used, if you dont know how to operate them then you're lost. The average car can have up to 25 computers in it and finding out which one has short circuited can be a tough job. Workers that can handle these problems in cars are getting harder and harder to find. Not to mention time spent on troubleshooting has grown larger and larger, surpassing the actual time a mechanic spends on repairing the car. It is predicted that in the near future, as cars have more and more computers in them, repairs will be much more expensive due to the fact that mechanics must spend more time in trouble shooting, and spend more money buying machines that test the numerous computers in the car.

This article talks about the restaurant of the future. It would be equiped with tables that have touchscreen plasma tv's for entertainment purposes, as well as ipod docks for customers to listen to on private headsets. The whole waiting process will be perfected by giving waiters handheld PDA's to take orders, as well as individual point of sale machines so that in order to pay you can just swipe your card right in front of you.

This site believes that through the diminishing prices of computers, they will eventually become free. This is expected, according to the site, to occur by presenting the user with advertisements on the computer, and thus make it effectively free. Although, some might argue that this is not necessarily "free", because there is technically a catch involved. It is very important to society because decreasing computer prices make them much more affordable for many; whether or not advertising comes as a package deal.

This site suggests that while we currently have two or three digital devices that we carry with us every day, we will soon have hundreds. It explains that many devices will be woven into our clothes. These devices will be able to do many things, such as allow your washing machine to know how it needs to be washed, or let your body know that you are beginning to catch a sickness, etc. These devices will serve as communicators. I think that this is very important because it can save people a lot of time, and potentially keep us healthier and safer. While it is scary to think that we will have hundreds of digital devices on us, and some that we may not even want, it could potentially be very useful and helpful.
My examples in the 2nd article may make it seem like a better product, however I think that free computers, the 1st article, is more beneficial to society. Not only is the option of free computers more realistic at this point in time, however it is also better for people who can't afford such resources, and are suffering a huge disadvantage due to this. Furthermore, the 2nd site may even cause the Government to track us too closely, which is something that frightens many.

This website is from the point of view of a man who thinks that as long as people don't want to have a faster computer and is content with what they already have, companies won't be racing to try to get the fastest, smallest computer out. Most people just need the computer for the word processor and the Internet, so having a computer that can print out your essay a minute faster isn't much improvement. If companies see that people think their computers are fast enough and don't need the one hundred gigabytes of memory, then technology won't be made obsolete every three months.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4449711.stm
This article is written with many quotes from the founder of Intel, Gordon Moore, who made up the theory Moore's law which basically says that technology will move at an astonishing rate. However, people need to have this rapidly improving technology. Without faster computers, other innovations would not be possible. All the computer companies are only trying to stay on top of the other companies by cranking out the faster, smaller computers. Eventually, there will be a limit as to how fast and small the computer can be, and the energy will instead be used on how to advance some other type of technology.
The first website seems to try to dissuade people from wanting to buy that faster, smaller computer. That way, the computer we already have will satisfy us and we won't be tempted to buy that new computer our neighbor has. However, the second article encourages this behavior, probably because most of the support for the argument comes from the founder of Intel himself. I tend to want to agree with the second article more. Though the waste of computers is a huge problem and there are many landfills that are brimming with old computers, we have learned too much about the benefits of computers in the course to follow the first website's advice. In the chapter we read about using technology in medicine, it seems that it will be unlikely to be able to find new cures for diseases without these faster computers. Projects that map out the human genes need these computers in order to process all that information into a solution.

This online simulation of the JFK assassination, which places the viewer in the literal seat of the supposed killer, has generated a huge controversy over the lengths to which online simulations can go. The physics and graphics are very realistic in this replay of the assassination, and one gets an eerie sense of something wrong in committing such an action, even online.

Assessing Blood Pressure
http://132.241.10.14/bp/bp.html
This website was a really good simulation for learning how to take blood pressure. First, there was some information about concepts, positioning, and procedure. Then, I got to try out taking blood pressure with three simulations. I had to hear the sound of the heartbeat and record what pressure it started at. This is a really great way for doctors or nurses to learn how to take blood pressure without an actual patient.

SIMNET
This webpage describes Pat Garrity's invention of developing a SIMulation NETwork, which was revolutionary for creating a network that allowed several users to compete in the same arena at once. This was a gigantic leap from individual simulators because it allowed soldiers in training to practice their skills against their peers in a low-cost arena. Advanced PC technology was the factor that was responsible, and this virtual simulation was incorporated into video games provided for consumer entertainment later.
Unfortunately, the description of this technology is on an actual government-funded military website, so they do not provide an example of it. Instead, they include pictures and designs of the actual model.

Monte Carlo Simulation
(http://www.styleadvisor.com/products/allocationadvisor/montecarlo.html)
At my previous job, I used a lot of Monte Carlo simulations for the purpose of asset allocation. Essentially, Monte Carlo Simulation gives you the probabilities of ones’ wealth in a given year. The simulation process is very simple (at least for me) and all I had to do is to input the value of the clients’ assets and his expected years to live (usually, we assume a client lives until he is 95 years old). I would love to get behind the program and fully understand the logic and the algorithms of the simulation, but it would require a lot of knowledge in math and computer science, which I don't have.
Monte Carlo simulation is also useful for other purposes such as probability risk analysis and healthcare analysis.
Please note that since the simulation is copyrighted, you will not be able to experiment with the program right now.

This site allows you to see all of the options that President Lincoln had facing the crisis that led up to Fort Sumter. There are 5 "problems" simulated, and the user gets to read each of the options and decide what s/he would have done if s/he were Lincoln. The simulation then provides what Lincoln himself actually chose to do. Through this simulation, visitors can see the reasons behind Lincoln's decisions during that time in history. -CL Summer 06

This simulation allows you to manipulate different aspects of the national spending to try and balance the budget. You get an idea of how much money is being used in what areas, and you can compare the amount each area. It also gives an idea of how hard it is to deal with spending and managing a budget. The simple version is straightforward and easier to manipulate. However, if you are really interested in the details of the budget, there is a long version available as well. The simulation gives people who are interested in government spending or the national budget a chance to explore the topic. It also allows manipulation of the numbers so people could see what would happen in different situations. AL Summer '06
