NESTED STRUCTURE 2
TITLE: Potential Treatments
Students will be presented with an assignment of gathering information over the next three nested structure (3, 4 & 5) to come up with the characteristics that would comprise a successful treatment for cancer. They will evaluate their treatment as well as the other treatments according to established criteria for good treatments and fill in the chart to be handed in. The goal of the students is to revisit what they learned about treatments and cures.
• Students will develop skills for conducting web-based research. • Students will develop group-work skills as they attempt to create a successful treatment with little to no side effects. • Students will learn what the criteria scientists use to determine the success of a treatment.
• All cancer treatments cause negative side effects. • Many children think that chemotherapy or surgeries combined with chemotherapy are the only treatments for cancer and they are not. • Some surgeries do not have side effects, as well as biological and hormonal therapy.
STANDARDS FOR NJ:
5.2 All students will develop problem solving, decision-making and inquiry skills, reflected by formulating usable questions and hypotheses, interpreting and analyzing data, drawing conclusions and communicating results.
Teaching Standard E: Teachers of science develop communities of science learners that reflect the intellectual rigor of scientific inquiry and the attitudes and social values conducive to science learning.
Computers with internet access for each group of students plus printers.
Reserve computers or time at the computer lab.

TIME: One 45 minute class period.
This project will be handed in at the completion of Nested Structure 5. Final Project Requirements Information Sheet attached.
Activity # 1
• Present the student with the requirements needed to complete their project (requirements attached). • Brainstorm with students what potential treatments may be. • Revisit treatments discussed in the previous lesson.
Final Project which is due at the end of Nested structure 5.
