Diesel in the Railway Series[]

Diesel visited on a trail from the Other Railway. A scheming, oily trickseter with a foul temper who likes to cause trouble wherever he goes, he was supposed to help Duck with his shunting, but he spread such mean-spirited rumours about Duck and the other engines that caused the Fat Controller to send him away To Edwards Station.

Diesel is based on the 0-6-0 BR Class 08 diesel shunter. He is painted in the all-over plain black livery used by British Railways for shunting engines in the 1950's.

He made a brief return in the one-off story Thomas and the Evil Diesel, in which he showed that perhaps he did have good streak buried somewhere deep inside. A very similar-looking locomotive appeared in one of the illustrations for Thomas and the Great Railway Show.

Diesel in The Television Series[]

He first appeared in Season 2 episode, Pop Goes The Diesel, told by Ringo Starr in the UK and George Carlin in the US. Diesel first arrives and thinks he knows everything and says to Duck, who is assigned to show him around, that he is revolutionary. Duck tells Diesel to take his trucks while he fetches Gordon's coaches. Diesel would not listen yanks and pulls the very old trucks but they do not move. He starts growling and roaring and makes a mess. He has to help workmen clear the mess. The trucks make up Choris a song that Andgoes like this:

UK: Trucks are waiting in the yard

"Tackling them with ease'll

Show the world what I can do"

Gaily boasts the diesel

In and out he creeps about

Like a big black weasel

When he pulls the wrong trucks out,

POP GOES THE DIESEL.

US: Cars waiting in the yard

"Tacking them with ease'll

Show the world what I can do"

Gaily boasts the diesel

In and out he creeps about

Like a big black weasel

When he pulls the wrong cars out,

POP GOES THE DIESEL.
