[edit] Who am I
- Digital Worlds 103 Tutor
- Provisional PhD Candidate in the School of Geography and Environmental Science
- Transport Planning Consultant
[edit] My PhD Topic
My working title is Technology, infrastructure and space: Exploring emerging creativity. Basically I am looking at the impacts of new Information Communication Technologies (ITCs) on they way people interact with the space around them. My background theory examines the way space and time have been dealt with Geography and the need to challenge this approach in light of these new technologies.
[edit] Transport Planning Consultant
After I finished my Masters I got a job as a Transport Planner at Auckland City Council. It was an exceedingly interesting and stressful job. It gave me great insight into local government workings and how important transport infrastructure is to a city. The key project I was involved in was the Real Time Passenger Information Project. For anyone that has caught the Link Bus it is the projct involving the real time signs at the stops. For more information you can check out the following link Real Time Passenger Information Project
The project is currently being rolled out across the entire Auckland Region, and due to my experience with it the I was employed as a consultant on it after I left the council to persue my PhD.
[edit] Interesting Links
Below are some links to websites that have relevance to the course and my own research.
This project is aimed at discovering how people percieve the space around them. Based in London it has provided people with a type of mobile that has GIS technologies which allows them to make comments about areas on a map, i.e. create their own virtual world of the space around them.
This site monitors information on the global telecommunications and transport industries. It has some interesting maps of internet usage and you can also subscribe for free to get regular updates on the industry.
This links to the Ministry of Economic Development website on the development of a Digital Strategy for NZ. It has some interesting information about ICTs in NZ. It is important to remember that national policies can have a profound effect on the way ICT infrastructure develops in a country.
