Narrator: "One day, Doc was in the cottage where he lived with the other dwarfs. They were all bigger than Doc and boasted about it."
Grumpy: "The driver won't choose you again."
Narrator: "Said Grumpy."
Grumpy: "He wants strong dwarfs like us."
Narrator: "But the driver and fireman felt sorry for Doc."
Doc's Driver: "Would you like to come out today?"
Doc: "Oh, yes, please!"
Narrator: "Said Doc. So he had his breakfast, gained losts of stamina, and Doc puffed away.
The other dwarfs were very cross at being left behind.
Doc worked hard all day. The animals were very kind and the driver was very pleased."
Doc: "I'm going out again tomorrow."
Narrator: "Doc told the other dwarfs that night."
Doc: "What do you think about that?"
Narrator: "But he didn't hear what they thought, for he was so tired and happy, that he fell asleep at once.
Next morning, Doc woke up to find nothing had changed. Grumpy was still boasting."
Grumpy: "You watch me, little Doc, as I rush through with the express. That will be a splendid sight for you.
Good-bye, little Doc. Look out for me this afternoon."
Narrator: Doc went off to do some tackling.
Doc liked tackling. It was fun playing with monkeys. He would come up quietly and give them a push. Then he would stop and the monkeys would go bump into each other.
Monkey #1: "Oh!"
Narrator: "They cried."
Monkey #2: "Whatever is happening?"
Narrator: "Doc played until there were no more monkeys. Then he stopped to rest.
Presently, he heard some grumbling.
Grumpy was very cross. Instead of nice, shining animals, he was taking monkeys."
Knuckles: "Monkeys, Monkeys, Monkeys!"
Narrator: "He grumbled."
Grumpy: "The shame of it, the shame of it, oh, the shame of it!"
Narrator: "Doc laughed, and went to find some more monkeys.
Then there was trouble."
Porter: "Grumpy can't get up the hill."
Narrator: "The porter called to Doc's driver."
Porter: "Will you take Doc and push him, please?"
Narrator: "They found Grumpy halfway up, and very cross. His drier and fireman were talking to him severely."
Grumpy's Driver and Fireman: "You're not trying!"
Grumpy: "I can't do it!"
Narrator: "Said Grumpy."
Grumpy: "The noisy monkeys hold a dwarf back so."
Narrator: "Doc's driver came up."
Doc's Driver: "We've come to push."
Grumpy: "No use at all!"
Narrator: "Said Grumpy"
Doc's Driver: "You wait and see."
Narrator: "Replied Doc's Driver.
They brought the monkeys back to the bottom of the hill."
Doc: "I'm ready!"
Narrator: "Said Doc."
Grumpy: "No good."
Narrator: "Grumbled Grumpy. They pulled and pushed as hard as they could.
Grumpy: "I can't do it! I can't do it! I can't do it!"
Narrator: "Puffed Grumpy."
Doc: "I will do it, I will do it, I will do it!"
Narrator: "Puffed Doc. Doc pushed and puffed, and puffed and pushed as hard as ever he could. And almost before he realized it, Grumpy found himself at the top of the hill."
Grumpy: "I've done it, I've done it, I've done it!"
Narrator: "He said proudly. He forgot all about Doc and didn't wait to say 'Thank you'.
Doc was left out of breath and far behind. He ran onto the next station, and there he found that the driver and fireman were very pleased with him. The fireman gave him a nice long drink, and the driver said,"
Doc's Driver: "I'll get out my clothes tomorrow, and give you a beautiful new red shirt. Then you'll be the smartest dwarf in the cottage."
