Narrator: Duke is a wise and grand old brown narrow-gauge tender engine who likes to be kept busy, even though he is one of the older engines on the Skarloey Railway. Today he had been given no jobs to do at all, and really wanted someting to do in his spare time.

Mr. Percival: What's wrong Duke?

Duke: That's Granpuff to you.

Mr. Percival: Sorry, what's wrong Granpuff?

Duke: I just hate having nothing to do. I know I'm getting old and my paint is wearing away, but that doesn't mean I want to rest all the time, and I really want something to do back at the sheds.

Mr. Percival: Yes, you are rather worn-out, I must admit. I know, so many of the younger engines on this railway are useless with their buffers. You could teach them.

Duke: Me, teach the youngens? Yes, good idea, I will give the others Do-It-Yourself Lessons.

Narrator: Duncan could certainly do with a few lessons for Duke. So could Sir Handel. And Peter Sam. Oh dear, Luke. And finally of course, Mighty Mac.

(Mighty Mac shunt a truck piled with far too much coal and dust flies everywhere forcing the double engine to cough)

Mr. Percival's workman accompliament: Hello Mighty Mac. This is for you. (Hands them a letter)

Mighty: Thank you sir.

Mac: Well are you going to read it Mighty or what?

Mighty: Yeah I was going to do that. Let's see. Ah yes. Tired of your front buffers being back ones? Come and join Duke's Do-It-Yourself School.

Duke: Very well Peter Sam. Do come along. And now it's our turn. Yo-ho! Sir Handel? He was thirsty perhaps he has gone.

(Sir Handel arrives)

Sir Handel: Nice buffers, Grandpa.

Duke: Now I'm just going to check that you're all here. Mighty Mac?

Mighty: We're present.

Mac: Well where would you be without me Mighty?

Mighty: Obviously.

Duke: Sir Handel.

Sir Handel: I'm present.

Duke: Duncan.

(Duncan whistles in reply)

Duke: Peter Sam. Yo-ho. Peter Sam?

Peter Sam: Peek-a-boo, Granpuff. It's me.

Duke: And Luke.

Luke: I don't think he's here. (Duke stares at him) Only joking.

Duke: Now today we're going to build a new shed for any engines who might like to join this railway. (Leads the others to the other side of the yard) It's very simple. First of all, you have to build the framework. And then you concentrate on the roof. All that's left now is to put up the walls and the door.

Luke: Uh, excuse me Granpuff, but there's nothing left for us to do.

Duke: (scoffs) That's what you think, you feeble lot.

Peter Sam: We're not feeble Granpuff. We've most of us worked on this railway quite well, if you ask me.

Duke: Ah, wait till you get to the best bit. Duncan, would you please go in and look round the shed which I have just built.

Duncan: Right away. (rocks and rolls into the shed and hits the inside of the back walls which causes the entire structure to collapse on top of him) OUCH! My poor funnel!

Mac: Are you alright Duncan?

Duncan: No. My funnel's been dented by a wooden beam.

Duke: Well I'm not that Duncan knocked down the shed. Besides you've all now seen how a railway shed is built. So now it's your turn to build.

Sir Handel: Oh I don't know.

Peter Sam: Come on Sir Handel. It will be fun.

Mr. Percival: Well now Duke. How is your new school coming along?

Duke: For the last time sir, it's Granpuff to the controller.

Mr. Percival: Sorry Granpuff. And you were saying.

Duke: Oh yes. Actually sir, your idea was simply wonderful. My pupils are making excellent progress.

Luke: Here's some tiles for the roof.

Peter Sam: And some nails to strengthen it too.

Mighty: Don't forget to leave a space for the window.

Duke: Well sir, aren't they wonderful, my little pupils? We'll have to build and rebuild once every month. Well done every one.

Sir Handel, Peter Sam, Luke and Mighty Mac: Thank you Granpuff.

Duncan: And now may I go for a new funnel sir.

Mr. Percival: Well yes you can Duncan. But that won't be until morning now. And tomorrow I'll also send Duke for a fresh coat to paint over his scratches. How would you like that Granpuff?

Duke: Oh yes please. Sir, thank you sir. I'll look even better than ever before. Oh, and you finally referred to me by Granpuff. Thank you sir.

(All the engines and Mr. Percival laugh)
