Historic Image of Evergreen, DI.

INFO: Evergreen is the second largest city in Evergreen County, Douglas Island. It is located in the Shelter Bay Metropolitan statistical area.

The town is located on the eastern shore of Shelter Bay and extends southward. To the north and west of Evergreen is the city of Shelter Bay. To the east is the city of Greenwood. The Pacific Ocean is the border to the west of the shoreline. The Evergreen Mountains are easy access and a backdrop to the city to the east.

The climate is mostly mild summers and mild winters. The winters often have many cloudy days and rain.

HISTORY: The town was platted on the east side of Shelter Bay across from the town of Shelter Bay. A small ferry service first connected the two towns until a road was built around the bay connecting them. The town started as a farming community with a church and small main street for business. It was an independent community from Shelter Bay until over time, both towns connected, showing no real difference between the city limits. The Evergreen school district has been independent from Shelter Bay since the beginning.
