Transcript

Narrator: A new engine was arriving on the Island of Sodor. She was a light blue LNER engine, and she didn't want to be late. She soon crossed the Vicarstown Bridge, and pulled into Vicarstown Station.

Sir Topham Hatt: Right on time!

Wendy: Thank you, sir. My name is Wendy. Are you the controller of the railway?

Sir Topham Hatt: That's me! You've come to my railway to help pull commuter trains from Vicarstown to Knapford.

Wendy: Thank you, sir. I'm really looking forward to working here on the Island of Sodor.

Narrator: Wendy soon proved to be a really useful engine. She picked up passengers arriving from the mainland at Vicarstown Station, and took them across the island. She stopped at every station along the way until she reached Knapford at the other end of the line.

Wendy: I hope I someday get my chance to pull the Wild Nor Wester. I heard that's the most important passenger train on the railway.

Narrator: And Wendy did get her chance. When Gordon was unavailable one day, Sir Topham Hatt asked Wendy to pull it. That made her very happy indeed.

Wendy: Express coming through!

Narrator: One day, a few weeks after Wendy arrived, Sir Topham Hatt came to see her.

Sir Topham Hatt: Wendy, Hiro was supposed to pull a train along the main line, but he's broken down. You'll have to take it for him.

Wendy: Alright, sir. It's coaches, right?

Sir Topham Hatt: No. It's a goods train. So it'll have trucks.

Wendy: Trucks?! I... I...

Sir Topham Hatt: What's wrong, Wendy?

Wendy: Well... what about my commuter run? That's in another half hour, sir.

Sir Topham Hatt: I'll find another engine for it. I'm sorry, Wendy, but you're the only engine available and those trucks has urgent deliveries.

Wendy (to herself): Bother! I need to think of something else.

(Wendy puffs away)

Sir Topham Hatt: Wendy? Where are you going?

Narrator: Wendy found some coaches waiting at a platform at Vicarstown Station.

Wendy: Excuse me, where are these coaches going?

Vicarstown Stationmaster: Stepney's coming to take them. He's taking a teacher and a group of children to Ulfstead Castle.

Wendy: That's it!

Narrator: Wendy decided to take the schoolchildren to Ulfstead Castle herself to keep herself busy.

(Guard blows his whistle and Wendy leaves Vicarstown)

Sir Topham Hatt: I can't find Wendy anywhere.

Neville: Is something wrong, sir?

Sir Topham Hatt: I need Wendy for a job, but I can't find her anywhere.

Stepney: Hello, everyone. I've come to pick up the schoolchildren. Umm, where are they?

Neville: Hmmm.

Narrator: Wendy races as fast as she could. She wanted to get as far away from Vicarstown and the goods train as possible. She arrived at Ulfstead Castle, the Earl was a bit surprised.

Sir Robert Norramby: Hello. You're early. I thought Stepney was taking the schoolchildren.

Wendy: I... was available. So I decided to do it for him.

Glynn: All aboard for a grand tour of the estate railway!

Narrator: But Wendy still didn't want to go back to Vicarstown Station. Then she saw the Duke and Duchess of Boxford waiting on the platform.

Wendy: Hello. Are you waiting for something?

The Duke of Boxford: We're just waiting for our engine, Spencer.

The Duchess of Boxford: He's a bit late. He should have arrived 10 minutes ago.

Wendy: I'll take you, if you want.

The Duke of Boxford: Why thank you.

Wendy: You're welcome. My name's Wendy, by the way.

Narrator: So Wendy picked up the Duke and Duchess of Boxford, and left the castle, just as Spencer was arrived.

Spencer: Where are the Duke and Duchess?

Narrator: Meanwhile, Neville had been searching for Wendy. He was climbing the hill up to Ulfstead Castle when...

Neville: Wendy!

Wendy: Neville?

Narrator: the two engines passed each other. They were both very surprised. Wendy didn't stop until she reached the Duke and Duchess's summerhouse.

The Duchess of Boxford: Thank you, Wendy. Have a nice day.

Wendy: You're welcome.

Narrator: Wendy didn't know what to do now, but she knew she didn't want to go back to Vicarstown Station and pull that goods train. Then she found a shed nearby.

Wendy: I'll just have to hide here for now.

Neville: Wendy? Wendy? Where are you, Wendy? Oh! Wendy, are you in here? What are doing in here? Sir Topham Hatt asked to do pull a goods train.

Wendy: I know, but that's the problem.

Neville: What do you mean? And why have you been running away all morning?

Wendy: Well... you see, Neville. I... have never pulled trucks before. I'm a passenger engine, and my job has always been to pull coaches.

Neville: You've never pulled trucks before?

Wendy: Not one. I've heard they're very troublesome, and I'm afraid they'll cause trouble for me.

Neville: Well, trucks can be troublesome at times. But as long as you're kind to them and treat them with respect, they won't give you any trouble.

Wendy: You really think?

Neville: I don't think so. I know so.

Wendy: Thanks, Neville. I'm starting to feel better about this.

Narrator: So Wendy made her way back to Vicarstown, and took the goods train.

Wendy (to herself): Alright, there's nothing to be afraid of. There's nothing to be afraid of.

Narrator: Throughout the journey, Wendy was kind to the trucks, and the trucks didn't give her any trouble at all. And by the end of the day, Wendy had finished delivering all of the trucks.

Sir Topham Hatt: Well done, Wendy! You've worked very hard today, even if you didn't start your assigned job right away.

Wendy: Thank you, sir. I'm no longer afraid of trucks, and I have Neville to thank for that. He told me that if I'm kind to trucks, the trucks will be kind of me. And now, I hope I pull more trucks again in the future.
