  • Emerson - letter arrived 4/5, mentioned 150 applications. (2)
  • George Mason (Cultural Studies, Visual Media)via email 11/30 I checked status on this and was told I was never in the running as I applied online on the day after the deadline. Just FYI, in case anyone else uploaded on the 13th or later. Response: I never submitted an on-line application and I was shortlisted. GM sent out e-mails to all the shortlisted candidates who had not applied online (but paper apps) requesting them to fill out the web application several weeks after the deadline.

did anyone see that this may have been just posted as a full-time non-tenure-track lecturer position posted to SCMS 2/3? Yeah- I saw that too. With a 3/3 load, which I am certain is not what TT folks teach there. - Letter re the Lecturer position 3/36
  • Wesleyan U - Letter dated 2/29, postal mail. Reads, "we will not be making an appointment this year."

when were the rejections sent? via letter or email? I got this over the phone from the prgram assistant. I called and said I had another offer, they checked and said the committee would meet 1/29. Then they called on 1/30 to say I am not on the shortlist. I was not surprised as they advertised a position last year that was far closer to my fields, and I did not get called then either, so I thought applying again would be a long shot. Good luck, it sounds like it could be a great opportunity.

  • Westminster College (3/18 letter said position was filled)
  • York University - (2/10) said they decided to interview only Canadian citizens. Q: Do you know if they made their interview list yet? I never got an email ack. of my app and am concerned they never got it. [They did send e-mail acks and have started to invite people for campus interviews.] Thanks very much for the info. Off to call Canada Post and yell at them!

  • Brandeis Digital Humanities Postdoc, (MLA, 12/12)(2)

[edit] General Questions and Discussion

Anyone heard from Rollins?

Any updates on Bard College?
Heard they've asked at least one candidate for an interview.

Has anyone heard anything from Northwestern? The call was for Associate or Assistant tenure-track with emphasis on race, sex and nation in media studies/screen cultures (to answer the "details" question above). The deadline was Dec 15 and still no word; tried to contact the search chair who seems to be on leave this semester and not responding to emails. Now I see two profs from that dept will be on job search workshop at SCMS, yet no one in their own dept seems to be responding to the applicants for their own job search--or maybe my rejection got lost in the mail?<br

I don't know if they hired anyone, or have had interviews yet. But the last two assistant profs hired by that program left the academy after a couple years at Northwestern U. Which may or may not reflect on the program.

Heard via email that the search is ongoing, though slow, and they (NW) will be updating folks soonish. I've heard 2nd hand that they've (Northwestern) started job talks for both positions. (3/3)

Got a Northwestern rejection letter---claimed they had over 200 applications (3/3). Has anyone heard if they are interviewing only associate profs for the position?

They have a visiting prof from an Ivy that may be in a good spot to get an offer. Given their track record with hiring people who leave the academy, they may want to go with someone more advanced in their career.

Has anyone heard a peep from the University of Virginia? - I didn't even get an acknowledgment that my application was received... See above. I received an acknowledgment only because I e-mailed for an update on the position in early January, when I was told the committee had yet to meet.

Hear this offer went to 2 people (possible a couple?)

- Has anyone heard from University of Chicago or Northwestern University? York University?

  • University of Chicago has chosen 3 candidates for job talks. Those candidates should hear very shortly (2/6).

- Has anyone heard anything from Wesleyan's American Studies/Film studies job?? They asked for a SASE postcard and I haven't even gotten that back.
Delivery confirmation tells me that they did receive materials but have heard nothing at all. (2)-I haven't gotten my SASE back either. (4), same situation, sent them an email last week, have heard nothing. their admin assistant is very nice about updates.
A. Got an ack letter today: "The search committee expects to review the applications by the end of January 2008 and will contact you regarding our decision." For some reason, they didn't use the SASE I sent with my app. Huh. (arrived 12/8, dated 11/30) (2)

ANY news here?
Wesleyan committee met today, Jan 29. 'Italic textAccording to this WIKI, campus visits and rejections have been sent? Does anyone have any further information??? A: I would assume that if we haven't heard from them, we didn't make the shortlist.
Closed, no appt. See Rejections List.

This is the 2nd straight year that this search has failed. Word is that Am Stud and Film have very different visions of the position, and can't find a consensus candidate. Remember the danger of being a bridge appointment - people can walk over you from both directions...

Bryn Mawr: My research tells me that Bryn Mawr has an excellent VAP though. Swarthmore hired their VAP last year. Not sure what that indicates, but one notices these things. I am sure Bryn Mawr will interview at MLA though, so someone should hear from them soon.
Question: Is this job crosslisted under 20th/21st Century American (which reports an MLA interview scheduled), or is that a different posting?
A: I assume it's the film/lit job that's also cross-listed on 20th21th C Am Lit page.
Q: 4/7 Has Bryn Mawr sent official rejection letters to their MLA interviewees?

Anyone heard from Carleton or Fordham? I got an email for Carleton that they plan to do interviews in January- so I assume I am out of the running, since it is January and I have heard nothing.
See above (Campus Visits Scheduled) re: Fordham
Carleton College wrote to tell me they were doing on campus interviews in Jan, but I did not get invited, nor has anyone I know, so I don't know if they really did this. They have been back in session since early Jan. though. (RESPONSE) They did do interviews. They brought in three candidates. I was one of them. They are looking for someone with strong production skills and less media studies. Seems like a nice place. 1/2008

What about UT-Dallas or Hofstra?

Georgetown - Culture and Politics (saw it on MLA wiki)--May I ask where you saw this? I see one Georgetown visit scheduled in the "composition and rhetoric" category, but it's unclear if this is SFS.

There was some long conversation on the MLA site and someone said GT had started on campus interviews for the position--but please only take that for what it is worth-I did NOT get this from, say a friend with an interview

I received a rejection letter that confirms this information (that SFS is brining candidates to campus.)

Anybody heard from Gustavus Adolphus? (2/5) A: Campus visit scheduled 2/8

Did anyone get an interview for the Washington U (in St. Louis) TT job? Because their website is touting the hiring of Gaylyn Studlar....A: That is very interesting. In the "rejections" section I posted that WU recently listed a lecturer position in film studies on SCMS. I wonder if they decided to split the film studies teaching load up between Prof. Studlar and the lecturer to offer GS a lighter teaching load?

2/13: Anyone hear anything about Ursinus? I know they had interviews, but has anyone received an offer? See above. I received a rejection letter via email today (3/4) stating my file was still under consideration til now, so it seems that they did not send out rejection letters to their shortlisted candidates until their first choice accepted the position.

2/18 Any news re: the U of Chicago position? --U Chicago has invited 3 candidates to give job talks, over the next 2 weeks. 2/20

2/19 Any updates UCLA Film History, open rank? MLA site lists deadline extended to 1/25 or until position filled. Yes - campus visits scheduled Any word about candidates? (research area, PhD affiliation?) 2 post-docs (one might be an ABD (Harvard ABD, UPenn,...?) Update = also 2 senior scholars (and former UCLA students): Eric Smoodin & Lea Jacobs. Interesting and telling . . . "Telling" - How so? A: New person here (so I can't speak with certainty to previous posters "Telling"), but hiring your own (UG or G) is seen not only as nepotistic, but also incestuous by most of the academy. Oddly, the major exceptions seem to be the elites, which once was was true of European ruling houses as well. It can also be seen as a sign that a program is faltering because its graduates can't get hired anywhere else.Obviously, not the case here, since both Smoodin and Jacobs have tenure elsewhere. Right. I was referring to why programs don't hire their recent graduates. -My point by using 'telling' was merely to comment on how the search committee views 'film history.' Smoodin and Jacobs are fine scholars with a strong empirical and archival approach to their work (as oppose to, say, scholars whose work is more focused on historiography and/or theories of the archive). 'Telling,' in short, was not meant as a slight (2/29/08). "Nepotistic" seems like a fair issue to raise here---certainly "insular" --they're going VERY senior, and VERY junior--splitting the difference.--I heard from a friend that they hired a young twenty-something woman (apparently a ABD) over Eric Smoodin and Lea Jacobs.
