This is the start of the Finnish Language Learning Wiki.
The Purpose of this Finnish Language Learning Wiki is to provide resources for learning the Finnish language through the medium of English.
It is hoped that the WIKI will provide learning material provided by students and teachers, but will also contain links to other useful material available on the web, as well as provide good advice.
The main teaching material is of course Finnish with the explanations given in English. If your home language is not Finnish there may be a version of this Wiki in your home language. Check at the bottom of this page. If there is no WIKI for learning Finnish in your home language yet, why not help to get one started?!! Its easy!

Start Listening
Edit
Language is primarily an auditory phenomenon so listening to the language is a great way to get started.
Click here to get to know more ways about how you can listen and get to understand Finnish.
Start Reading
Edit
Reading material is a great way to learn. Unless you have access to recorded material, spoken language is transitory and does not give you time to think about the language you are meeting. So having access to good reading material is not only useful, its probably essential. And if there is access to good explanations about the material to help you along, that is even better!

Start Speaking
Edit
Language experts tell us that only by speaking can we really develop our language skills. Speaking enables us to perfect our accent, and it re-inforces memory. And of course, the whole purpose of learning a language is to be able to communicate through speaking.

Start Understanding
Edit
The whole purpose of language is about communicating understanding. To achieve understanding we need to map to words and phrases and grammatical structures to things in the real world. The wonderous thing about language acquisition in children is that they come into the world knowing nothing about it and then, in the space of a very short time (just three of four years) become really quite expert at not just knowing how to use words, grammar, idioms etc. correctly, but also develop quite a deep understanding of what they mean too!
As an adult learner with another language, you already have mapped your understanding of the world to the words and phrases in your mother tongue, which may be English. If you have never learned a second language before you will soon learn that although there are sometimes exact correlations between Finnish words and structuers and those in your mother tongue, this is not always the case. Your mother tongue can actually become a hindrance to learning and it is best to stop thinking in your mother tongue as soon as possible. In order for you to do so, you need to quickly be able to re-map the understanding you have about the world and how it fits to the words and structures in the language you are learning.
