Four Little Engines[]

  • George Carlin: If you should visit the place that has a lake in the woods and a beautiful waterfall, then you may also find two little engines called Skarloey and Rheneas. The engines know everybody and everybody knows that. There are two more engines: Sir Handel and Peter Sam. They used to be called Stuart and Falcon, but they like they're new names better. One day, Sir Topham Hatt send Edward to the works to be mended. A big surprise awaited Edward.
  • Edward: It's Skarloey. What's he doing here?
  • George Carlin: Skarloey was pleased to see Edward.
  • Skarloey: I've been sent here for a rest.
  • George Carlin: He sighed.
  • Skarloey: I was put in the shed so I can see everything and not be lonely. But I do miss Rheneas. He's going to be mended. I wish I can be mended too, and pull coaches again.
  • George Carlin: Just then, some workmen arrived.
  • Workman: We're going to take you to the works now, Edward. Come along.
  • Edward: Goodbye, Skarloey. Your railway's a lovely line.
  • Skarloey: Oh, it is, it is! You cheered me up, Edward. Goodbye.
  • George Carlin: Meanwhile, Sir Handel was having trouble with some coaches. He tried to be kind, but the coaches didn't trust him. They were awkward and rude. There was worst to come. Some careless sheep stray on to the line.
  • Coaches: He's bumped us!
  • George Carlin: Screamed the coaches.
  • Coaches: Let's get back at him!
  • George Carlin: They serge into Sir Handel and pushed him off the rails. No one was hurt, but Sir Handel limped sadly to the shed.
  • Driver: No more work for you, today.
  • George Carlin: Said his driver.
  • Driver: How are we going to pull the visitors' train without an engine?
  • Skarloey: What about me, sir?
  • Driver: Skarloey, can you do it?
  • Skarloey: I'll try.
  • George Carlin: Said the old engine. The coaches stood at the platform.
  • Skarloey: I'm ashamed of you.
  • George Carlin: Scolded Skarloey.
  • Skarloey: You might have hurt your passengers.
  • George Carlin: The coaches quivered.
  • Coaches: We're sorry, Skarloey.
  • George Carlin: The conductor blew the whistle, and they're journey began. Skarloey remembered all the gates and styles where he had to stop. The sun shone and the rails were dry.
  • Skarloey: This is lovely.
  • George Carlin: Sanged Skarloey. Presently, the line grew steep. Skarloey felt short of steam.
  • Driver: Take your time.
  • George Carlin: Soothed his driver.
  • Skarloey: It'll be better down hill.
  • George Carlin: Skarloey said to himself. But it wasn't. His springs were weak, and the rail joints jarred his wheels. At last, a spring gave weigh.
  • Skarloey: I feel all crooked!
  • George Carlin: Cried Skarloey.
  • Driver: We'll need a bus now for our passengers.
  • George Carlin: Sighed his driver.
  • Skarloey: No!
  • George Carlin: Pleaded Skarloey.
  • Skarloey: I'll get them to the station or burst.
  • George Carlin: James was waiting on the platform. Clanging and clanking, Skarloey steamed in.
  • Skarloey: I'll do it, I'll do it. I've done it.
  • George Carlin: James collected his passengers and respectfully puffed away. Everyone was pleased with Skarloey, but he was still worried.
  • Skarloey: Old engines can't pull trains like the young ones can.
  • Driver: They can if they're mended, old faithful.
  • George Carlin: Smiled his driver.
  • Driver: And that's what gonna happen to you. You deserved it.

A Big Day For Thomas[]

  • George Carlin: Thomas the Tank Engine was grumbling to the other engines.
  • Thomas: I spent my time pulling coaches about ready for you to take out on journeys.
  • George Carlin: The other engines laughed.
  • Thomas: Why can't I pull passenger trains too?
  • Gordon: You're too impatient.
  • George Carlin: They said.
  • Gordon: You'd be sure to leave something behind.
  • Thomas: Rubbish!
  • George Carlin: Said Thomas.
  • Thomas: I'll show you.
  • George Carlin: One night, he and Henry were alone. Henry was ill. The men worked hard, but he didn't get better. He felt just as bad next morning. Henry usually pull the first train and Thomas had to get his coaches ready.
  • Thomas: If Henry is ill.
  • George Carlin: He thought.
  • Thomas: Perhaps I shall pull his train.
  • George Carlin: Thomas ran off to find the coaches.
  • Thomas: Come along, come along.
  • George Carlin: He fussed.
  • Coaches: There's plenty of time, there's plenty of time!
  • George Carlin: They grumbled. Thomas took them to the platform and wanted to run round at once. But his driver wouldn't let him.
  • Driver: Don't be impatient, Thomas.
  • George Carlin: Thomas waited and waited. The people got in, the conductor and stationmaster walked up and down, the porter banged the doors and still Henry didn't come. Thomas got more and more excited. Sir Topham Hatt came to see what was the matter, and the conductor and stationmaster told him about Henry.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Find another engine.
  • George Carlin: He ordered.
  • Both: There's only Thomas.
  • George Carlin: They said.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: You'll have to do it then, Thomas. Be quick now.
  • George Carlin: So Thomas ran round to the front and back down on the coaches ready to start.
  • Driver: Let's not be impatient.
  • George Carlin: Said his driver.
  • Driver: We'll wait till everything was ready.
  • George Carlin: But Thomas was too excited to listen. What happened then, no one knows. Perhaps they forgot to couple Thomas to the train, or perhaps the Driver pulled the leather by mistake. Anyhow, Thomas started without his coaches. As the pass the signal tower, men waved and shouted, but he didn't stop.
  • Thomas: They're waving because I'm such a splendid engine.
  • George Carlin: He thought importantly.
  • Thomas: Henry says it's hard to pull trains, but I think it's easy. Hurry, hurry, hurry!
  • George Carlin: He puffed, pretending to be like Gordon.
  • Thomas: People had never seen me pulling a train before. It's nice of them to wave.
  • George Carlin: And he whistled.
  • Thomas: Peep peep! Thank you.
  • George Carlin: Then he came to a signal at danger.
  • Thomas: Bother!
  • George Carlin: He thought.
  • Thomas: I must stop, and I was going so nicely too. What a nuisance signals are.
  • George Carlin: He blew an angry "Peep peep!" on his whistle. The signalman ran up.
  • Signalman: Hello, Thomas.
  • George Carlin: He said.
  • Signalman: What are you doing here?
  • Thomas: I'm pulling the train.
  • George Carlin: Said Thomas.
  • Thomas: Can't you see?
  • Signalman: Where are your coaches then?
  • George Carlin: Thomas looked back.
  • Thomas: Why bless me.
  • George Carlin: He said.
  • Thomas: If we hadn't leave them behind.
  • Signalman: Yes.
  • George Carlin: Said the signalman.
  • Signalman: You better go quickly and fetch them.
  • George Carlin: Poor Thomas was so sad he nearly cried.
  • Driver: Cheer up.
  • George Carlin: Said his driver.
  • Driver: Let's go back quickly and try again.
  • (Thomas reverses back to the big station)
  • George Carlin: At the station, all the passengers were talking at once. They were telling Sir Topham Hatt what a bad railway it was. But when Thomas came back, they saw how sad he was and couldn't be cross. He was coupled to the train, and this time he really pulled it.
  • (Thomas pulls the coaches away with ease at all)
  • George Carlin: Afterwards, the other engines laughed at Thomas and said...
  • Henry: Look! There's Thomas, who wanted to pull the train, but forgot about the coaches.
  • George Carlin: But Thomas had already learned, not to make the same mistake again.

A Big Surprise For Percy[]

  • Alec Baldwin: Percy was working in the coal yards. He was feeling bored and lonely with only the silly freight cars for company.
  • Driver: Cheer up, Percy.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said his driver.
  • Driver: Sir Topham Hatt has told me that we must be here again tomorrow. We've just got to get the best of a bad situation.
  • Percy: I'll try, sir.
  • Alec Baldwin: Sighed Percy. Next morning, the freight cars started teasing Percy.
  • Cars: Percy, Percy, green and small, he's no use to us at all, around the yard to puff and blow but on a hills, he's oh so slow!
  • Percy: Be quiet!
  • Alec Baldwin: Then he took the freight cars to the coal hopper to be loaded up. Percy still felt glum as he puffed up to the top of the hill. He parked his freight cars and then set off back down the mines. Not even a cheerful sight of Bertie the Bus could bring a smile to Percy's face.
  • Bertie: What's the matter, Percy?
  • Alec Baldwin: Asked Bertie.
  • Percy: Nothing exciting ever happens. That's the matter.
  • Alec Baldwin: Sighed Percy.
  • Percy: It's just coal coal coal and cars cars cars. I'm bored bored bored.
  • Bertie: Excitement is surprising.
  • Alec Baldwin: Observed Bertie.
  • Bertie: You never know when it'll happen. Otherwise, it wouldn't be exciting. Tootle peep.
  • Percy: It would be surprising if something surprising happened.
  • Alec Baldwin: Muttered Percy. Later, he stopped by the water tower for a drink.
  • Toby: Hello, Percy. How are things?
  • Alec Baldwin: Asked Toby.
  • Percy: Boring.
  • Toby: Well, why not have a few spins on a turntable? You'll like that.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said Toby.
  • Percy: I think it just make me feel giddy.
  • Alec Baldwin: Percy's driver interrupted.
  • Driver: Stop gossiping, you two.
  • Toby: Cheer up, Percy. You soon know about cars than any other engine. That'll be exciting.
  • Alec Baldwin: Called Toby. The freight cars were still grumpy and there was more of them then ever.
  • Cars: You much too small to pull one of us. We want another engine who would be struggling at the hill all night! All night, all right, you can puff and blow, but on a hill, you're still slow! Ha, ha!
  • Percy: Slow yourself!
  • Alec Baldwin: Stuttered Percy.
  • Cars: Temper, temper.
  • Alec Baldwin: Giggled the cars. Percy decided to simply carry on.
  • Driver: Go to it, Percy.
  • Alec Baldwin: Shouted his driver. The freight cars were still joking.
  • Cars: Too slow, more power, here all night, tomorrow too!
  • Percy: Be quiet!
  • Alec Baldwin: Said Percy angrily. Then there was trouble. A coupling broke.
  • Cars: Surprise, surprise! Catch us if you can!
  • Percy: Oh, no!
  • Alec Baldwin: Cried Percy.
  • (The freight cars speed away from Percy and pass Bertie)
  • Alec Baldwin: Percy's driver phoned the signalman and the yard foreman told Sir Topham Hatt what was happening.
  • Yard Foreman: They're heading for the big hill! It'll slow them down but they roll back again right into the village.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Then we'll just have to stop them, won't we?
  • Alec Baldwin: The chase was on.
  • (Sir Topham Hatt and Bertie go after the runaway cars)
  • Alec Baldwin: As they approach the hill, they overtook the freight cars. Sir Topham Hatt and Bertie screeched to a halt, and waited for them near the top. The hill slow the freight cars right down to a stand still. Then the men quickly put wooden blocks behind their wheels so they couldn't roll backwards. The freight cars were now secured. Just then, Percy arrived.
  • Bertie: Well, what do you think of that?
  • Alec Baldwin: Joked Bertie.
  • Bertie: A good chase is always exciting.
  • Percy: It was certainly a surprise.
  • Alec Baldwin: Decided Percy.
  • Percy: And you are right, Bertie. A really useful engine should never be surprise by surprise.

Toby's Tightrope[]

  • George Carlin: One day, Percy arrived in a quarry to collect some stone for his freight cars. Snow and frost lay everywhere. There was not a sound to be heard. Percy ventured further. He found Mavis the new diesel engine resting in the shelter of some rocks.
  • Percy: Cheer up, Mavis.
  • George Carlin: He whistled. Mavis was still remembering the trouble she had with cars.
  • Mavis: Manager says I don't listen for his advice. He says I'd no business chortling down Toby's line. Toby's a fusspot.
  • Percy: Toby has forgotten all about freight cars than you'll ever known.
  • George Carlin: Replied Percy.
  • Percy: You must put the cars where he wants them, then you'll be a really useful engine. Now if you excuse me, I have to take these stones to the harbour.
  • George Carlin: Mavis likes Percy but she still wouldn't to his advice.
  • Mavis: Why shouldn't I go on Toby's line.
  • George Carlin: The siding arrangements are awkward. The put the cars where Toby wanted them, Mavis had to make several journeys. She started making a plan.
  • Mavis: If we used the key stood on Toby's line.
  • George Carlin: She said to her driver.
  • Mavis: We would save all was bother.
  • George Carlin: Her driver suspecting nothing allow them to go as far as the level crossing. A few days later, the weather changed. As the soon melted, the quarry grew busy again. Some trains were so long that before leaving the cars for Toby, Mavis had to go beyond the level crossing with them. Now for her plan. She would go further down the line without it seeming her fault.
  • Mavis: Can you keep a secret?
  • George Carlin: She asked the freight cars.
  • Cars: Yes, yes, yes!
  • George Carlin: They chattered.
  • Mavis: Will you bump me at the level crossing and tell no one I ask you?
  • George Carlin: The cars promised. But while Mavis was away, Toby arrived. He decided to shunt the cars himself. The cars decided to bump him anyway. They reached the level crossing and Toby's brakes came on. This was the signal for the freight cars.
  • Cars: On, on, on!
  • George Carlin: They yelled. Toby was away. With the cars screaming and yelling behind him. No one realize that melted snow had turned a stream ahead into a torrent and the bridge above it was about to collapse. The rails were now like a tightrope against the thundering water.
  • Toby: Stop, stop!
  • George Carlin: Cried Toby. His driver thought for control. They came nearer and nearer by the bridge. It was all of nothing now. The driver braked hard.
  • (Toby reaches the broken bridge)
  • George Carlin: Toby stopped still on the rails but with his wheels shredding the tightrope over the abyss. Mavis was horrified and quickly came to the rescue. Workmen anchored Toby with ropes while she pulled the freight cars away. Then, she helped Toby to safety.
  • (Mavis rescuing Toby)
  • Mavis: I'm sorry about the cars.
  • George Carlin: Said Mavis.
  • Mavis: I can't think how you manage to stop them in time.
  • Toby: Oh well.
  • George Carlin: Said Toby.
  • Toby: My driver told me about circus people who walked tightropes, but I just didn't fancy doing it myself.
  • George Carlin: Later, Sir Topham Hatt arrived.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: A very smart piece of work.
  • George Carlin: He said.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Mavis, you did well too I hear.
  • Mavis: It was my fault about those cars, sir.
  • George Carlin: She faulted.
  • Mavis: But if I could...
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Could what?
  • Mavis: Come down the line sometimes, Sir? Toby says he'll show me what to do.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Certainly.
  • George Carlin: Replied Sir Topham Hatt.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: If your manager agrees.
  • George Carlin: And so it was arranged. Now Mavis is as happy as can be, and Sir Topham Hatt thinks she's really useful indeed.

A Cow On The Line[]

  • George Carlin: Edward was getting old. His bearings were worn, and he clanked as he puffed along. He was taking empty cattle cars to a market town. The sun shone, birds sang, but Edward was heading for trouble.
  • Edward: Come on! Come on!
  • George Carlin: He puffed.
  • Cars: Oh! Oh!
  • George Carlin: Screamed the cars. Edward puffed and clanked, the cars rattled and screamed. Some cows were grazing near by. They were not used to trains. The noise and smoke disturbed them. As Edward clanked by, they broke through the fence and ran across the line. A coupling was broken and some cars were left behind.
  • (Cows mooing)
  • George Carlin: Edward felt a jerk, but didn't take much notice. He was used to cattle cars.
  • Edward: Bother those cars!
  • George Carlin: He thought.
  • Edward: Why can't they come quietly?
  • George Carlin: He was at the next station before either he or his driver realized what had happened. When Gordon and Henry heard about the accident, they laughed and boasted.
  • Gordon: Fancy allowing cars to break your train! They wouldn't dare do that to us. We'd show them!
  • George Carlin: Old Toby was cross.
  • Toby: You couldn't help it, Edward. They've never met cows. I have, and I know the trouble they are.
  • (Edward's whistle toots and puffs away)
  • George Carlin: Some days later, Gordon rushed through Edward's Station.
  • Gordon: Boop boop! Mind the cows! Hurry, hurry!
  • George Carlin: Puffed Gordon.
  • Coaches: Don't make such a fuss! Don't make such a fuss!
  • George Carlin: Grumbled his coaches. A long stretch a line lay ahead. In the distance was a bridge. It seemed to Gordon that there was something on the bridge. His driver thought so too.
  • Gordon's Driver: Whoa, Gordon!
  • George Carlin: He said, and shut off steam.
  • Gordon: Pooh!
  • George Carlin: Said Gordon.
  • Gordon: It's only a cow! Shooh! Shooh!
  • George Carlin: He moved slowly on to the bridge, but the cow wouldn't "Shooh"! She had lost her calf, and felt lonely.
  • Cow: Mooooh!
  • George Carlin: She said sadly. Everyone tried to send her away, but she wouldn't go. Henry arrived.
  • Henry: What's this? A cow? I'll soon settle her. Be off! Be off!
  • Cow: Mooooh!
  • George Carlin: Henry backed away nervously.
  • Henry: I don't want to hurt her.
  • George Carlin: At the next station, Henry's Conductor told them about the cow, and warned the signalman that the line was blocked.
  • Porter: That must be Bluebell.
  • George Carlin: Said a porter.
  • Porter: Her calf is here, looking for her mother. Percy will take her along.
  • (Percy's whistle toots)
  • George Carlin: At the bridge, Bluebell was very pleased to her calf again, and the porter led them away.
  • (Cows mooing)
  • Henry: Not a word.
  • Gordon: Keep it secret.
  • George Carlin: Whispered Gordon and Henry to each other. They felt rather silly, but the story soon spread.
  • (Crickets chirping; owl hoots)
  • Edward: Well, well, well!
  • George Carlin: Chuckled Edward.
  • Edward: Two big engines afraid of a cow.
  • Gordon: Afraid? Rubbish.
  • George Carlin: Said Gordon.
  • Gordon: We didn't want the poor thing to hurt herself by running up against us. We stopped so as not to excite her. You see what I mean, my dear Edward?
  • Edward: Yes, Gordon.
  • George Carlin: Said Edward. Gordon felt somehow that Edward "saw" only too well.

A Better View For Gordon[]

  • Alec Baldwin: Gordon was feeling grumpy. This was making James cross.
  • James: Why are you complaining all the time?
  • Gordon: Because I'm a big blue engine and I know everything. I shall complain whatever I like. You're just a small red engine with ideas above your station.
  • Percy: I can't see any.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said Percy.
  • Percy: Where are they?
  • Gordon: Any what?
  • Percy: Ideas above the station. The sky's empty.
  • James: Like your smokebox, Percy.
  • Alec Baldwin: Laughed James, but Gordon was still grumpy.
  • Gordon: One day I'll show you just a big engine can really do.
  • Percy: So what can a big engine really do?
  • Gordon: Not speak to silly little green engines for a start.
  • Alec Baldwin: Replied Gordon, then he puffed away. Later that day, Sir Topham Hatt came to see him.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Gordon, you'll be making one stop today with an empty express to test our new station. You can make up time afterwards.
  • Gordon: Why can't Henry do it? He likes idling at stations.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: You will do as you are told.
  • Alec Baldwin: So Gordon did. But he was still unhappy and he grew sick too.
  • Gordon: I just can't get up to speed.
  • Alec Baldwin: He groaned.
  • Gordon's Fireman: It's time for your visit to the works. Your pipes are clogged.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said the fireman. At last, they approached the new station. Gordon was impressed but his mood soon changed. In front of him was a blank wall and huge buffers.
  • Gordon: What a boring view! Important engines like me should have a panoramic view where I can see people and people could see me.
  • Alec Baldwin: And he wheeshed angrily. Gordon was happy when it was time to leave.
  • Gordon's Driver: Now you can really enjoy your run as long as your pipes will let you.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said his driver.
  • Gordon: Come on, come on! I can go faster that this!
  • Alec Baldwin: Huffed Gordon.
  • Gordon: Sick? Me? Never!
  • (Gordon suddenly breaks down)
  • Alec Baldwin: But Gordon began to feel more and more feeble, and soon, he came to a complete stop.
  • Gordon: What happened?
  • Alec Baldwin: His driver and fireman inspected him.
  • Gordon's Fireman: Something's broken inside you, Gordon.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said his fireman.
  • Gordon's Fireman: Now you're really will have to go to the works.
  • Alec Baldwin: Gordon was still fuming when James arrived to collect his coaches.
  • James: Well, well, well! So much about anything. You got too puffed up in your boiler so it's serves you right.
  • Alec Baldwin: When Gordon returned to the works a few days later, he was still boasting.
  • Gordon: I am the finest engine on the Island of Sodor, properly the finest in the world.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Come on, Gordon. We're going to the official opening at the new station.
  • Alec Baldwin: Then, there was trouble. As Gordon approached the new station, neither the driver nor fireman could apply his brakes. Something had jammed. The driver reduced steam, but Gordon was still going too fast.
  • (Gordon crashed into the wall)
  • Gordon: Help me, please!
  • (We see Sir Topham Hatt surviving as he rises up to Gordon)
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Well, Gordon.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: I knew you wanted a panoramic view, but this is not a way to achieve it.
  • Gordon: Yes, Sir, sorry, Sir.
  • Alec Baldwin: When Gordon was repaired again, he took Sir Topham Hatt to the new station, for a second official opening. This time he arrived safely, and everyone clapped and cheered as he pulled in. Sir Topham Hatt spoke to him.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Your panoramic view is here to stay. I trusted you are always see through it, from the safety of your own rails.
  • Alec Baldwin: Gordon hardly agreed.

Saved From Scrap[]

  • George Carlin: Sir Topham Hatt works his engines hard, but they are very proud when he calls them really useful.
  • Edward: I'm going to the scrapyard today.
  • George Carlin: Edward called to Thomas.
  • Thomas: What? Already? You're not that old.
  • George Carlin: Replied Thomas cheekily. Thomas was only teased him. The scrapyard was full of rusty old cars and machinery. They are broken into pieces, loaded into cars and Edward pulls them to the steelworks where they are melted down and used again. Today, there was a surprise waiting for Edward in the yard. It was a traction engine.
  • Edward: Hello.
  • George Carlin: Said Edward.
  • Edward: You're not broken and rusty. What are you doing here?
  • Trevor: I'm Trevor. They're going to break me up next week.
  • Edward: What a shame.
  • George Carlin: Said Edward.
  • Trevor: My driver says I only need some paint, polish and oil to be as good as new, but my owner says I'm old fashioned.
  • George Carlin: Edward snorted.
  • Edward: People say I'm old fashioned, but I don't care. Sir Topham Hatt says I'm a useful engine. What work did you do?
  • Trevor: My owner will send us from farm to farm. We threshed corn, hauled logs and did lots of other work. The children loved to see us.
  • George Carlin: Trevor shut his eyes, remembering.
  • Trevor: Oh, yes. I like children.
  • George Carlin: Edward set off for the station.
  • Edward: Broken up, what a shame. Broken up, what a shame. I must help Trevor, I must.
  • George Carlin: He thought of all his friends who liked engines. But strangely none of them would have room for a traction engine at home.
  • Edward: It's a shame, it's a shame.
  • George Carlin: He hissed. Then...
  • Edward: Peep! Peep! Why didn't I think of him before.
  • George Carlin: There on the platform was the very person.
  • Vicar: Hello, Edward. You look upset. What's the matter, Charlie?
  • George Carlin: He asked the driver.
  • Driver: There's a traction engine in the scrapyard, Vicar. He'll be broken up next week. Jem Cole says he never drove a better engine.
  • Edward: Do save him, sir. He saws wood and gives children rides.
  • Vicar: We'll see.
  • George Carlin: Replied the Vicar. Jem Cole came on Saturday.
  • Jem Cole: The reverend's comin to see you, Trevor. Maybe he'll buy you.
  • Trevor: Do you think he will?
  • George Carlin: Asked Trevor.
  • Jem Cole: He will when I lit your fire and clean you up.
  • George Carlin: The Vicar and his two boys arrived that evening. Trevor hadn't felt so happy for months. He chuffered about the yard.
  • Vicar: Show your paces, Trevor.
  • George Carlin: Said the Vicar. Later he came out of the office, smiling.
  • Vicar: I've got him cheap, Jem, cheap.
  • Jem Cole: Did ye hear that Trevor?
  • George Carlin: Cried Jem.
  • Jem Cole: The reverend's saved you and you'll live at the vicarage now.
  • Trevor: Peep! Peep!
  • George Carlin: Whistled Trevor. Now Trevor's home was in the Vicarage Orchard, and he sees Edward every day. His paint is spotless and his brass shines like gold. Trevor likes his work but his happiest day is the church fair. With a wooden seat bolted to his bunker, he chuffers round the orchard giving rides to children. Long afterwards, you will see him shut his eyes, remembering.
  • Trevor: I like children.
  • George Carlin: He whispers happily.

Soon the coach was rockin', it swayed from side to side.
  • Girl: (singing) With the bath water spillin' and a-splashin' inside.
  • Children: (singing) Rockin', rockin' on the railway, Rollin', rollin' on the railway Movin', movin' down the line, Swingin', sway from side to side. They'll be rockin' an' a-rollin' an' a-reelin' on the railway tonight. Rockin', rockin' on the railway, Rollin', rollin' on the railway Movin', movin' down the line, Swingin', sway from side to side.
