Narrator: "The animals were busy clearing their paths of leaves and broken branches.
Bear and Owl often worked together. One day, Owl helped Bear to a water fountain. And once there, whistled goodbye.
Bear felt much better after his long drink, but the changelings were bored.
Changelings: "Let's break away!"
Narrator: "They giggled. Their loads were heavy, and the chains old. One snapped!"
Changelings: "Faster! Faster!"
Narrator: "Shouted the changelings. A sign read 'Slow steep bends and ravine ahead', but the silly changelings never saw it.
Then, it was too late.
Bear arrived at the scene of the disaster. His driver sighed."
Bear's Driver: "This was our fault; we didn't secure them properly. We'll have to get help to pull them up.
Mayor Adam West will be very annoyed."
Narrator: "And he was."
Mayor Adam west: "You will arrange changelings in the yards until I can trust you again."
Narrator: "Fox was delighted with Bear's dilemma."
Fox: "Fancy not securing your changelings on a hill. They'll come back to spook you and your special head. Whoo!"
Owl: "And who's to say you're not afraid of ghosts?"
Narrator: "Snapped Owl."
Fox: "Pah! Ghosts? Things that go bump in the night? Rubbish!"
Owl: "Well, I'll tell you a story that will make your ears quiver!"
Narrator: "Owl said."
Owl: "A long time ago, a fox was returning home. It was a misty moonlit night. As the fox cross the old iron bridge, he suddenly lost control and plunged over the side into the swamps below.
He was never found again, but many a workmen will tell you that when the moon is full, they have seen the fox trying to get home, but he never reaches the other side.
So what do you think of that, Fox?"
Fox: "Pah! Nonsense!"
Narrator: "Replied Fox, and he puffed away."
Owl: "Never mind him, Bear. He'd be frightened if he really saw a ghost."
Narrator: "This gave Bear's driver an idea."
Bear's Driver: "Let's play a trick on Fox!"
Narrator: "The next day, he spoke to Fox's driver and fireman, who agreed.
Fox's Crew: "We'll do it tonight!"
Narrator: "They said.
Fox had to bring changelings to the slate mines, and then bring changelings back.
Fox's driver decided, as part of the plan, to cross the old iron bridge."
Fox: "Haunted bridge, pah!"
Narrator: "Snorted Fox."
Fox: "It's as tame as a pet rabbit!"
Narrator: "But all the same, he kept thinking about Owl's story.
When dusk fell, he was keen to leave."
Fox: "If we don't go now, Franklin will take my favorite place in the room."
Fox's Driver: "We can't go back until we've collected all the changelings."
Narrator: "His driver replied.
He could see his plan was working, because Fox was nervous.
When night fell, they set off.
The moon was full, and the mists were rising around the old iron bridge.
Fox screamed, and the sound echoed everywhere.
Then, ahead, he saw flickering lights. His driver knew they were only little insects that shine brightly at night, but to Fox, they looked like another fox!
Next, his driver secretly threw a rock into the ravine below."
Fox: "It's the ghost! Take me back! Take me back, please!"
Narrator: "When Fox reached the safety of his room, he closed his eyes tightly."
Fox's Driver: "Spooked, are you, Fox?"
Narrator: "Laughed his driver."
Narrator: "Wailed Fox."
Fox: "I'm asleep!"
Narrator: "And refused to open his eyes.
He did though, when he thought his driver wasn't looking, just to make sure that he was still there."
