[edit] Introduction
History is rife with many examples of the game of Chicken;
- Rebel Without A Cause (1955)
- Footloose (1984)
- Arrested Development (2005) Episode: The One Where They Build A House
Whereby two or more participants have a showdown (typically two men driving vehicles towards each other), escalating until one side backs down (this party is known as the "chicken", used pejoratively to mean a weaker character).
Gay chicken is a variant of this game, only instead of cars, the object is to make successively more aggressive sexual advances on the other person. When a person becomes too uncomfortable, they end the game, thereby becoming the "gay chicken", with implied connotations of being both weaker and homosexual.
Oddly, the person most comfortable with their sexuality is least likely to end the game, despite the nomenclature.
[edit] Disputes
It has not been established if it is still officially "Gay Chicken" if the participants are not of the same sex and/or sexual preference. It has been proposed it depends on the sexual orientation (i.e. gay chicken is still gay chicken between two straight males, two straight females, or a lesbian and a gay man, etc.).
In the same vein, Benji "Hallway" Milanowski often suggests couples engage in "Heterosexual Chicken", whereby (typically) a straight male and female engage in foreplay until they have sexual intercourse. This is in line with Benji's general views on polyamory and free love.
[edit] Source
The game of Gay Chicken was featured on at least one episode of Scrubs. In the fourteenth episode of the third season entitled "My Screw Up", characters Dr. Cox and his friend Ben engage in a game of gay chicken while waiting for an elevator.
Unlike the game Ankles, Gay Chicken was not independently developed. Milanowski will freely admit that he saw it on Scrubs and came to the conclusion that it was a game to be played with the Fools.
[edit] Fools
Gay Chicken is not played at actual Ship of Fools shows. Practices, parties, and games of 1000 Blank White Cards, however, are fair game. Within the group, it is a highly polarizing game. Some of the Fools are mortified and refuse to participate (thus forfeiting by default). Others are notoriously difficult to beat, even to the point of winning matches before playing (often because of exaggeration on the part of winners).
