'there are lots of different kinds of graduate programs. here are some categories:
1. professional: these lead to a masters degree credential which enables you to be a professional practitioner. urban planning (MCP), social work (MSW), law (JD), education, public health, journalism... some of the professions have PhD programs, but generally you need to be a practitioner for some years before seeking a PhD.
2. academic: these programs are generally directed toward becoming a scholar. you earn a masters degree on your way to a PhD and a career in research or teaching. sociology, political science, justice studies, etc.
