  • Narrator: One winter's night when the cold wind blew, the tugs found it hard to sleep.
  • Hank: What we need...
  • Narrator: Suggested Hank,
  • Hank: Is to listen to a story.
  • Theodore: Yes,
  • Narrator: Said Theodore.
  • Theodore: A mysterious story.
  • Sunshine: But,
  • Narrator: Added Sunshine,
  • Sunshine: It must have a happy ending.
  • Ten Cents: Driver told me a story,
  • Narrator: Said Ten Cents, so everyone listened.
  • Ten Cents: Once upon a time.
  • Narrator: Began Ten Cents.
  • Ten Cents: There were three little engines who lived in their own little shed in their own little railway. Their names were Gordon, Percy, and Thomas. Gordon was the oldest, and was named after his grace, Duke Gordon. He was proud of this, and liked to keep the young engines in order. Whenever they did anything that Gordon thought wrong, he would say.
  • Gordon: That would never suit his grace.
  • Ten Cents: Other engines came and went, but Gordon outlasted them all. Percy and Thomas used to call him 'Granpuff'. They were fond of him, but they got very tired of hearing all about his grace. Sometimes they would tease him and chant,
  • Thomas and Percy: Engines come and engines go, Granpuff goes on forever!
  • Gordon: You impertinent scallywags!
  • Ten Cents: Gordon would say.
  • Gordon: Whatever are you engines coming to?
  • Percy: Never mind, Granpuff. We're only young at once.
  • Gordon: Well you better mind. Unless you want to end up like Spencer.
  • Thomas: Oh, Granpuff? What ever happened?
  • Gordon: Spencer,
  • Ten Cents: Said Gordon,
  • Gordon: Was a show-off! He rode roughly and often came off the rails. I warned him to be careful, but he took no notice.
  • Spencer: Listen, Gordon,
  • Gordon: He said,
  • Spencer: Who worries about a few spills?
  • Gordon: "We do here", I said, but Spencer just laughed.
  • Spencer: He he he he he!
  • Gordon: Until one day, manager said he was going to make him useful at last. Spencer stopped laughing then.
  • Percy: Well, why? What did he do?
  • Gordon: He turned him into a generator. He's still out there behind our shed. He'll never move again.
  • Ten Cents: After that, Percy and Thomas became really useful engines, and all three were happy together for many years. Then hard times came. The yards and stations closed, and the railway was closed, too. People came to buy the engines.
  • Passengers: We'll take Percy and Thomas.
  • Ten Cents: No one wanted Gordon. They thought him too old.
  • Percy: Cheer up, Granpuff.
  • Ten Cents: Called Percy.
  • Percy: We'll find you a nice railway, and then you can come and keep us in order.
  • Ten Cents: They tried to be brave and cheerful, but no one really thought their dreams would come true. Gordon's driver and fireman oiled and greased him one last time. They sheeted him snugly, and said goodbye. Then they had to go away and find work. Gordon was alone.
  • Gordon: Oh well.
  • Ten Cents: He sighed.
  • Gordon: I'll go to sleep. It'll help to pass the time.
  • Ten Cents: Winter torrents washed soil from the hills. Trees and bushes grew all around. You wouldn't have known if a shed was there, let alone an engine sleep inside.
  • Theodore: That's not a happy ending!
  • Narrator: Cried Theodore.
  • Ten Cents: Ah,
  • Narrator: Murmured Ten Cents,
  • Ten Cents: There will be one, but that will have to wait until next time.
