Halloween Party
From Scratchpad
Each year around late October, the Ship of Fools are known to embrace the festivities associated with Halloween. This includes prankery, tricking, treating, costuming, and traditionally a Halloween Party, open to all.
[edit] The Party Proper
Typically, the Ship of Fools organize an informal party to be held after the weekly meeting of the Friday closest to Halloween each year. This usually takes the form of a get-together held at the residence of an upper class Fool with the largest house or apartment, with minimal decorations. Donations are suggested for party attendees (a few bucks at the door), but the Fools do not officially charge for providing candy, pizza, soda, and other foodstuffs. Music is a must, and typically includes comedy recordings, theme songs, show tunes, and generous amounts of The Andy Ober Orchestra, as well as typical popular music. Awards for Best Costume and others may be awarded.
Few actual events are planned, but sing along sessions are common, and improv games almost always happen spontaneously. This is a cherished yearly event, and a great way for the fans to get an up-close and personal look at the off-stage lives of the Fools.
Advance requests for specific refreshments, songs, and other items are typically honored to the best of the ability of the gracious hosts.
[edit] Costumes
Fitting for a troupe of stage performers, costumes are an integral part of the festivities and the Fools encourage creative, clever, outlandish, and unique costumes for all members of the Purdue Improv Club, especially at the party.
"Visual puns" are a popular choice, where the costume itself represents a joke by literal interpretation.
Popular or notable examples include:
- Sports superfans, such as Alex "SOG" Semchuck (Cubs) and Scott "Klaus" Parker (Sweden)
- Stu "Bottle Opener" Ogle as the actual "ship" of Fools
- Paul "CMG" Kuliniewicz as the human embodiment of Wikipedia
- Impersonations, such as John "Cowboy" Clawson (member of the Ship of Fools, prior to his induction) and Ryan "T-Rex" Garwood (the Benji by Proxy event)
