[edit] Definition
A pyramid is any three-dimensional structure where the upper surfaces are triangular and converge on one point. The base of pyramids are usually quadrilateral or trilateral but generally it can be any polygon shape.
Thus, a human pyramid is a stack of people in a triangular shape. Typically, this takes the form of three large people on bottom, a row above of two smaller folks, and the lightest person on top.
[edit] Andy's Maxim
Andy "Quasar" Ober has a theory that has developed into another Ship of Fools rule:
Human pyramids are always funny.
In a number of situations, this has yet to be proven false.
[edit] The Signal
If the situation is right (such as the appropriate comedic timing, or a scene is bombing), an improvisationalist may tap his or her right foot in rapid succession to indicate the formation of a human pyramid. If there are not enough performers to make a pyramid, others will quickly run onto stage to complete the pyramid.
[edit] Human Pyramid (Improv Games)
Andy Ober has developed two games involving human pyramids:
The first, Human Pyramid (Improv Game) has six performers form a human pyramid and garner suggestions from the audience on the setting of the scene. From that, the performers must justify as to why they are in a pyramid as the game.
The second, Irish Drinking Pyramid expands the traditional Irish Drinking Song into a three person pyramid with a fourth member standing alone.
