An island is a pattern where every two live cells are connected by a "chain" of live cells, which may touch either orthogonally or diagonally--alternatively, a pattern where there is no "loop" of dead cells touching orthogonally containing some cells of the pattern but not others. Most intuitively, if live cells were connected at the edges and corners, an island is what you would pick up by grabbing one cell.
