Thomas and his Amazing Railway Band

Thomas and the Band Go to Elsewhere (Monday)

Plot

One Monday, Thomas and his friends are practising for a concert when Skiff comes down the line with a message for Thomas, saying; Railway Band to report immediately to the Queen of Elsewhere. Soon the railway crew are on the high seas going to Elsewhere.

When they arrive, the queen tells them the sad story of the King of Elsewhere. She explains that he can't sleep at night, which is bad enough, but what's worse is that he takes it out on everybody else. First he wakes her up, and then he wakes up the cook, he wakes up the soldiers, he even wakes up the cows. She then says she's heard a lot about Thomas and his friends who have joined Sodor over the years, so she suggests that when the king goes to bed this particular night, Thomas could play him something to send him to sleep. Thomas knows the very thing, and that night the railway band play the king a lullaby. And as they play, the king begins to nod, and then he falls asleep.

Next day, the king is thoroughly refreshed, and is in very good spirits too. He rules very well all morning, signs all sorts of letters and issues all sorts of commands. Then after an enormous lunch, he tells the queen he feels like having a sleep again. So he asks her to call that you-know-who train fellow in and have him play him to sleep. Of course, the queen is worried that if the king sleeps for too long in the day, it will spoil his sleep at night, so she tells Thomas to play her husband something that will give him forty winks but no more. Thomas says he knows the very thing once again. Afterwards, the king says how amazing it is what forty winks can do, and then for some more ruling.

The queen is so grateful to Thomas, she wants to know how to thank him. Thomas says he wouldn't say no to a milkshake. Gordon bets it's raspberry, Henry bets it's lame, and James bets it's vanilla. Thomas decides on chocolate and the three bigger engines all get a surprise.

Thomas' Bed and Breakfast (Tuesday)

Plot

On Tuesday, Thomas is conducting all the engines and rolling stock until he realizes they just aren't playing well any more, and becuase of this they need a rest. Even Henry has to agree. Then he suggests they go find a nice quiet place for bed and breakfast in the country.

When they arrive in the beautiful country of the Netherland, the farmer's wife asks if they're here for bed and breakfast. Then she asks how many there are of them. Thomas says "One hundred and twenty five, I mean six!" upon realizes he forgot that Mighty Mac has a face at both ends

In the morning after a breakfast where they were hardly enough eggs or milk to go round, Thomas wonders over to the farm with the farmer. The cows look very miserable. The farmer explains to Thomas, that they're not giving much milk. Thomas considers the matter for a moment, and then decides that music might help cheer up the cows. After looking long and hard at the most miserable cow in the herd, Thomas tries to decide on music suitable for a cow. Before long, he declares something soothing just the ticket, and so he assembles the enginess and rolling stock by the cow shed. Well there is no doubt about it. The cows look as though they enjoy the music. And that morning they give more milk then they had in a long time. The farmer is grateful about his cows, but still has a problem with his hens.

The hens aren't much to look at it. The farmer says they haven't had a cluck out for weeks or even lown an egg. Thomas says the band will soon put a stop to it, so he tells the band to play hen type music. In no time at all, the farmer has a whole load of dozen of eggs in his wheelbarrow. And he is so happy, he deicdes they should celebrate with another breakfast. At the second and much bigger and better breakfast that morning, the farmer thanks Thomas and says he'll always play music to his animals now. Thomas advises him to make sure it's music they like. The farmer wants to know how he can thank Thomas, asides from having a Dutch NS Class 6400 diesel named Louie join the Railway Band, as a reward for Thomas' help. Thomas explains he wouldn't say no to a milkshake. The farmer asks him what flavour. Duck bets it's going to be lemon, while Oliver bets it to be blackcurrant and Stepney believes it will be raspberry. Thomas decides on blackcurrant. Oliver is the one who was right this time. Then Louie is gladly accepted into the band.

Thomas and the Musical Dog (Wednesday)

Plot

Old Bailey is visiting Canada for a fortnight and his pet dog wags a great deal. Whenever Mr. Bailey takes his dog out for a walk his tag wags, and then when he isn't out for a walk, just the thought of being out for a walk makes his tail wags. There is only one thing that stops his tail wagging, which is the sound of the music, which is a great shame because Old Bailey likes to play the piano in the evening, whether on Sodor or not. But it makes no difference, even when he plays the happiest music, his dog would just sit on the floor looking throuoghly miserable.

On the first Wednesday of Old Bailey's holiday, Thomas and his band come to play in the bandstand in the park outside the snowy mountains of Canada. The jolly music brings a smile to the faces of all the visitors. But when Thomas sees how miserable Mr. Bailey's dog looks, he taps his stick and brings the band to a stop. Henry recognizes the dog and says it belongs to Old Bailey, though in this case he actually refers to him as Gareth Bailey. Thomas is hoping there is at least one instrument in the band that will make the dog's tail wag. And he points to Neville on the cello. Neville plays hard, but the dog's tail doesn't stir. Thomas thinks again, and points to Wendy the Light Blue Tender Engine in the bassoon, but that doesn't work either. In the end, Thomas decides they need somethine more unusual, and points to Murdoch on the tuba. That does the trick.

Old Bailey is grateful to Thomas, and as a reward, he lets a EMD G12 Canadian locomotive named Quentin join the railway band. But all the same, Thomas says he can't do without a milkshake. Old Bailey asks about the flavour. Stanley thinks it's going to be raspberry, while Bill and Ben think it might be strawberry, and the narrow-gauge engine say it will be chocolate, which is the one Thomas goes for. So the narrow-gauge engine are right today. Then Quentin is welcomed into the gang.

Thomas and the Fluffy Bird (Thursday)

Plot

On Thursday, Thomas and the Band are visiting Hungary where Alicia Botti has gone to stay with a friend for a few days. The friend explains to Thomas that she owns a feathery canary, but presently it isn't in her cage. Her canary had flown out of its cage, out of the window of the house at which Miss Botti and her friend are staying together, and into the forest. Thomas and the band are happy to help find the lost canary. Alicia's friend is relieved, and says that if her canary is safely returned she'll let an engine from Hungary join the Railway Band.

So that afternoon, Thomas leads his band, playing as they go, deeper and deeper into the forest. When they get to a clearing in the middle of the forest, Thomas stops and asks who can play a bird call to bring back the canary. Duck says he can on his trumpet. Thomas says he'll just sound like a duck. Duck tries to explain that ducks are birds, but Thomas has already turned to find someone else. Arthur tries on his flute then Charlie on his clarinet. But nothing. Thomas then decides that canaries like funny music and so points to Duck to play after all. It works. The canary comes closer and settles on the trumpet.

Well, Alicia Botti's friend is delighted to have her canary is back, and the canary is delighted to be back with Miss Botti's friend. Then Alicia and her friend let a Hungarian engine named Bianca join the Railway Band, and then ask Thomas what he'd like for his own reward. Thomas suggests a milkshake as it is quite thirsty work conducting. Alicia and her friend what flavour Thomas will ask for. Derek believes it will be orange, while Bash, Dash, Ferdinand and Tara think it will be lemon, and Hank and Theodore are sure it's vanilla. Thomas choses lemon, which means the Logging Locos are right. Then Bianca the MAV Class 424 Hungarian Engine joins the Railway Band.

Thomas' Surprise Christmas Present (Friday)

Plot

One winter morning, on a Friday, the Amazing Railway Band are busy practising Christmas Carols, but every now and then Gordon on the horn, would play a wrong note, or play when he wasn't meant to. Later that day when the band are practising in the snow to get used to the cold, Thomas goes up to Gordon and asks whether there's something worrying him. Gordon explains that it's just because he can't decide what to get for his sweetheart for her birthday, which falls on Christmas Day of all days. He thoughts about buying her a box of chocolates, then a bunch of flowers, and finally a hat, but no, especially since none of the hats seemed to fit. Thomas then has an idea, but tells Gordon that it will have to be secret so as to keep it a surprise.

That night, Thomas stays up late, humming tunes to himself and writing them down. For the next few weeks, especially on Fridays, those of the Railway Band who want to join in, play carols in the evening, while the rest volunteer to send inviations to engines from other islands who are willing to help out. But in the day, the carol players aren't to be seen around the town, as they are practising in the most out-of-the-way places.

On a very special Friday, Gordon gets up very early, for it it Christmas Day. Then Molly is woken by the sound of music coming from the other side of the shed. She pulls over, opens the door, and to her amazement, finds the whole railway band playing in the yard. Even Gator, Ashima, Rajiv, Ivan, Axel, Carlos, Shane, Mallard, Green Arrow, Duchess of Hamilton, Iron Duke, Sam and three of Ryan's brothers are playing some lovely Christmas music. Then Gordon wishes Molly many happy returns when the music finishes, then explains that Thomas wrote the music and they've been practising for the past fortnight to get it right. And Thomas says they probably couldn't had done it if it hadn't been for the visiting engines. Molly says they couldn't have given her a better present, and to play it again, wish they do.
