...is a character whose own past is a mystery to her.
She is a painfully thin beauty with raven black hair.
Her past as she knows it:
Her mother, Opal, was a recent arrival from the greater Chelaixian empire. Her mother died of a blood disease soon after Jul was born, much to the anguish of her father. Her father, Kohl, was caring but was always distant throughout her life haunted by Opal’s death.
Her father insisted she never leave the house because she was too weak and she had no defense against contagion, for she had inherited this blood disease from her mom. She had to take medicine provided by her father daily to stop the progress of the illness, but still the treatment left her weak with its potency. She spent all of her youth in her family manor house, only seeing the light of day through the barred second story window within the comfortable cloister of her room. As her disease progressed all of her hair fell out but she always wore a beautiful wig of long black hair to cover it.
The only other human contact with the world was when Lord Groghl, a long time friend and high ranking noble, visited her father. But Groghl rarely spoke more than a few words with the imposing figure and was rarely privy to the “grown up talk” in the parlor with Kohl. Instead she clung to the only other life she was in contact with, insects. She would always comb the house for new crawling and flying friends. Once she captured them she would carefully kill, catalog and pin them carefully for display in her collection, preserved in eternal perfection.
She thought her father was a healer, always working late treating patients, healing the sick and performing surgeries (which explained the blood splatters she sometimes she would see on his shirts when she laundered them.)
In the last year her godmother Blind Nell, a blind Varisian fortune teller and performer at the grotesque theater Exemplary Execrables, found out by chance that Jul was alive. Nell’s nephew Devon, a Verisian drug dealer and grave robber, had spotted Jul always looking out her window and mentioned it to Nell. Nell had always been told that Jul died with her mother in childbirth but quickly came to the shocking conclusion that she lived, but had been imprisoned in Sir Kohl’s townhouse. Nell began been sending out Devon to covertly contact Jul at night and had even once snuck her out of her cloister for a furtive night time visit to the theater.
A few weeks ago Sir Kohl was publicly accused of poisoning Opal fifteen years ago. An old nursemaid came out with testimony implicating him and produced one of Kohl's medicine vials. This was found to actually contain poison, the same poison that Kohl was accused of using on Jul’s mother.
Late one afternoon during one of Lord Groghl visits Jul overheard an argument from the parlor. Eavesdropping, Jul found out about the accusations against her father from their heated discussion. She overheard her father accusing his old friend of framing him out of jealousy because Opal chose Kohl over Groghl. By the time she heard that her dear dad was actually a vicious Hellknight she was reeling with shock.
As the implications of all she heard sunk in she was overcome with driving urge to escape her gilded cage for the night. In storm of confusion from the appalling accusations she was stole out to the theater to visit Nell and ask her advice. As she slipped out she was less than careful and Sir Kohl soon noticed her absence and followed her in full Hellknight regalia. (With Lord Groghl hot on his trail.)
Groghl, Kohl, Nell, and Jul soon found each other at the Exemplary Execrables. Their vicious confrontation soon boiled out onto stage revealing the family's dirty secrets for the rapt audience, cheering the grotesque show.
It was revealed that her blood disease was actually simply poison in the medicine Kohl he was providing his daughter in carefully measured doses. This was actually the cause of all her physical woes. He said he did it out of love to protect her and Jul believed him. (naively or not) It was actually Groghl who poisoned her mother out of spite over choosing Kohl instead of him.
The accusations exploded into a lurid scene of violence eventually ending with Nell sporting a cut throat and Sir Groghl impaled on Lord Kohl’s blade. Jul only survived when Devon sprung out of the shadows and stabbed Lord Kohl. The audience for the show gave a standing ovation while Devon snuck her out of the theater.
She has barely left her house for weeks and once she overcame her anguish she realized that has no idea what happened to Devon. Pilts Swastel from the theater knew nothing. Jul was tracking down the nurse maid (who has also disappeared) when she discovered that it was actually Lamm who framed her Dad. Lamm has been asking around about Jul and hinting that now she was an orphan he ought to be with him now...
Now she has a dusty empty house and nothing more; no friends, no family. She does not even know where the deed to the house is hidden in the house, so she cannot even sell the place if she wanted to. It is a small two story Midland Slope Townhouse in a tiny, claustrophobic, high-walled plot of land far down the slope near the Gray graveyard. The house once had beautiful garden but now it wild with weeds; the walls are topped with gothic wrought ironwork and it is fronted by a rusty metal gate.
The Small entry vestibule opens into a parlor with a spiral staircase and three doors leading out to the study, kitchen and dining area. All the rooms are small and once tastefully appointed but seem been barely maintained since Jul was born. The Kitchen/Laundry area has a stout wood trapdoor stout wood concealing a stone spiral staircase leading down to the larder.
The top floor has two bedrooms immediately flanking the top landing of the spiral stairway. The landing has a brief hallway leading to a small privy with a chipped and discolored but once beautiful bathtub behind the door. The hallway has a dumbwaiter hidden by a sliding panel on one side but constant use have left the wall scratched and worn, it is not very hidden anymore. It leads down to the kitchen and through to the larder below.
The lower floor has a well stocked dry larder (the only thing keeping Jul alive) and a mostly empty wine rack. There is a locked room with a heavy steel door that she has never found the key to.
What does shiver do? Shiver is taken by mouth, and it's effects are swift. After about a minute it kicks in as you enter a comatose state which lasts 1 to 4 hours during which you experience vivid, bizarre dreams. Additional doses extend the effect. For each week you don't use shiver you must make a DC 15 Fortitude save to avoid taking 1d10 Wisdom damage. You get your fixes from a place called the Dragon Breath Corridor at Eel's End. The proprietor's name is Bezzeraty.
The cozy chamber within the small home is filled with a fragrant haze of flowers and strong spice. The haze comes from several sticks of incense smoldering in wall-mounted burners that looks like butterfly-winged elves. The smoke itself to soften edges and gives the room a dream-like feel. The walls are draped with brocaded tapestries, one showing a black-skulled beast juggling men's hearts, another showing a pair of angels dancing atop a snow-blasted mountain. A third tapestry on the far wall depicts a tall hooded figure shrouded in mist, a flaming sword held in a skeletal hand. Several brightly-colored rugs cover the floor, but the room's only furnishings are a wooden table covered by a bright red throw cloth and several elegant tall-backed chairs. A basket covered by blue cloth sits under the table.
