Keith Hatten
From Scratchpad
Keith Hatten is a good friend of Alex "SOG" Semchuck who became the leading causal factor behind the creation of the game Quach.
While taking COM 261 (Television Production) in the spring of 2006, Keith was attempting to do a video voiceover for a fellow classmate, who did a piece on the Purdue Hip Hop Club and its president, Anthony "HayLo" Quach. The word "Quach" and the statement "A Quach" was more than Hatten could take, as he stumbled over the voiceover again and again, the victim of juvenile laughter.
"It sounds like a four-year-old trying to say crotch!" Hatten exclaimed repeatedly.
SOG was an innocent bystander, working on a separate project in the same room, but the laughter soon became contagious as he too began losing control. The other classmate and SOG then told Keith to leave the room so Alex could give the voiceover a try - though he expressed doubts in his ability to keep it together.
Unfortunately the editing room they were in had a large window into another room, which Keith immediately entered into and stared contently at the two while they tried to record a successful voiceover. This compounded Alex's laughter even more - I mean come on, how could you not laugh if you saw that face pressed up against a glass partition, laughing.
Alex was doing fine, up until he came to the word "Quach." He then burst out laughing repeatedly, eventually to the point of tears. Hatten was clearly amused from the other side of the partition. Alex had to finally break up the voiceover into segments to read it successfully - after at least 5 or 6 separate tries. After it was all done, Keith was let back into the editing room.
[edit] The Birth of Quach
Because of this editing fiasco, Alex was late to improv practice that night...but he knew he had a great story to tell. After telling the above story, Benji knew he had finally found a title to the "Green Screen Game." Thus, Quach was born.
[edit] Other Uses
Besides the game, "Quach" as an expression has other uses. While getting pumped up before an improv show, a Fool might say something to the extent of: "Let's rock out with our quaches out!" On the other hand, after an awesome improv show, a Fool might say, "We rocked out with our quaches out!"
While taping the last episode of FastTrack for the Fall, 2006 semester, Alex entered the name "Anthony Quach" on the teleprompter in place of "Keith Hatten," for Keith to read during the opening of his segment. Keith said his own name correctly, but burst out laughing after the camera switched to his co-anchor. He did much better on the second take.
