The Kidderminster Local List is one of several other local lists produced by the Planning Health & Environment Division of the Wyre Forest District Council [WFDC]. It simply list buildings in the specified location and their importance to the local community. It does not include buildings that are included in the Statutory List of Buildings.

The WFDC also have published or reviewing the Stourport-on-Severn Local List (adopted), Bewdley Local List (survey during Autumn & Winter of 2006), and the Rural Areas Local List (surveyed after completion of the Bewdley Local List).

Purpose

A common misconception of local lists is that the buildings listed are protected. This is not the case however by listing buildings can “encourage sympathetic and appropriate design for extensions and for any other work that would require planning permission”. It main purpose is therefore to highlight important building in an effort to retain them for our enjoyment and education.

There is no graded system applied, and no protection through law, however, the Local Plan sets out some safeguards (guidelines for the council) on locally listed buildings. No special permission has to be sought when undertaking works, unless planning permission is required, as with any other unlisted property.

Local Listed Buildings

The WFDC state that a locally listed building is, “one that has been recognised by the District Council as being of local interest, either for historical associations, or for its architectural style”.[1]
