Narrator: "Lady the tank engine was grumbling to the other engines."

Lady: "I spend my time pulling coaches about, ready for you to take out on journeys."

Narrator: "The other engines laughed."

Lady: "Why can't I pulled passenger trains, too?"

Emily: "You're too impatient."

Narrator: "They said."

Emily: "You'd be sure to leave something behind."

Lady: "Rubbish!"

Narrator: "Said Lady."

Lady: "I'll show you."

Narrator: "One night, she and Molly were alone. Molly was ill. The man worked hard, but she didn't get better.

She felt just as bad next morning. Molly usually pull the first train, and Lady had to get her coaches ready."

Lady: "If Molly is ill,"

Narrator: "She thought."

Lady: Perhaps I shall pull her train."

Narrator: "Lady ran to find the coaches."

Lady: "Come along, come along!"

Narrator: "She fussed."

Coaches: "There's plenty of time, there's plenty of time."

Narrator: "They grumbled.

Lady took them to the platform, and wanted to run around in front at once.

But hwe driver wouldn't let her."

Lady's Driver: "Don't be impatient, Lady!"

Narrator: "Lady waited and waited.

People got on board, the conductor and stationmaster walked up and down, the porters banged the doors, and still, Molly didn't come. Lady got more and more excited.

Lady Hatt came to see what was the matter, and the conductor and stationmaster told her about Molly."

Lady Hatt: "Find another engine."

Narrator: "She ordered."

Conductor and Stationmaster: "There's only Lady."

Narrator: "They said."

Lady Hatt: "You'll have to do it then, Lady. Be quick now."

Lady's Driver: "Let's not be impatient, Lady."

Narrator: "Said her driver."

Lady's Driver: "We'll wait till' everything is ready.

Narrator: But Lady was too excited to listen.

What happened then, nobody knows. Perhaps they forgot to couple Lady to the train, or perhaps the driver pulled the lever by mistake. Anyhow, Lady started without his coaches. As she passed the first signal tower, man waved and shouted, but she didn't stop."

Lady: "They're waving because I'm such a splendid engine.

Narrator: "She thought importantly."

Lady: "Molly says it's hard to pull trains, but I think it's easy.

Hurry, hurry, hurry!"

Narrator: "She puffed, pretending to be like Emily."

Lady: "People have never seen me pulling a train before. It's nice of them to wave."

Narrator: "And she whistled."

Lady: "Peep, peep. Thank you."

Narrator: "Then she came to a signal at 'Danger'."

Lady: "Bother!"

Narrator: "She said."

Lady: "I must stop, and I was going so nicely, too! What a nuisance signals are."

Narrator: "He blew an angry 'peep peep' on her whistle.

The singleman ran up."

Singleman: "Hello, Lady."

Narrator: "He said."

Singleman: "What are you doing here?"

Lady: "I'm pulling a train."

Narrator: "Said Lady."

Lady: "Can't you see?"

Singleman: "Where are your coaches, then?"

Narrator: "Lady looked back."

Lady: "Why, bless me!"

Narrator: "She said."

Lady: "If we haven't left them behind!"

Singleman: "Yes."

Narrator: "Said the singleman."

Singleman: "You'd better go back quickly and fetch them."

Narrator: "Poor Lady was so sad, he nearly cried.

Lady's Driver: "Cheer up."

Narrator: "Said her driver."

Lady's Driver: "Let's go back quickly and try again."

Narrator: "At the station, all the passengers were talking at once. They were telling Lady Hatt what a bad railway it was. But when Lady came back, they saw how sad she was, and couldn't be cross.

She was couple to the train, and this time she really pulled them.

Afterwards, the other engines laughed at Lady and said,"

Molly and Daisy: "Look, there's Lady, who wanted to pull a train, but forgot about the coaches!"

Narrator: "But Lady had already learned not to make the same mistake again."
