Grandpuff One evening, the engines find it hard to sleep. Thomas decides to tell them the story of three small engines named Duke, Stuart and Falcon. Duke, as the oldest and wisest, was often teased by the others: "Engines come, Engines go, Granpuff goes on forever!" This annoyed Duke, and he told them the story of Smudger... This made Stuart and Falcon behave well, and for many years the three engines were happy. Eventually, though, work dried up and the railway had to close. People came to buy Stuart and Falcon, but not Duke - they thought him too old. So Duke was left in a shed, alone. He decided to go to sleep... But that's not the end of the story, says Thomas. That can wait until tomorrow night. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Bulldog One morning, Percy is impatient. He wants to go out and show off his new coat of paint, but Thomas warns him off, saying that Duke will not be there to save him should he get into trouble. Toby asks what happened, and so Thomas tells the story... Falcon had been given a new coat of blue paint, and the day after, the Manager tells him he is to learn the mountain road, with Duke. Falcon is miffed - having the 'old fusspot' in front will block his view. Duke tells him not to worry about the view, but to look at the track. As they come out of a tunnel, so it happens. Falcon derails, and is very close to falling off the side of the cliff. Fortunately, Duke reverses hard, and is able to keep Falcon steady, even as he runs low on water - the passengers and crew get more from a cottage on the side of the track. Eventually, Duke hauls Falcon back onto the rails, and they can finish their journey. Falcon thanks Duke, and asks why he'd saved him after all the rude things he'd said. Duke replies, "Well you'd just had a new coat of paint. It'd be a shame if you rolled down the hill and ruined it." Michael Angelis, George Carlin
You Can't Win This is a story back in the days when Peter Sam was called Stuart and Sir Handel was called Falcon. Many people came year after year to have picnics and see the mountains, lakes, and most of all, Duke. He would always pull his train, called "Duke's Picnic," so as to not disappoint his friends. One day Duke was feeling ill. As his Driver checked him over, Stuart teased him about being old, saying he would need help someday. Duke, miffed, ignores this, and takes his train. However, when they come to a steep hill, Duke starts to wheeze. He struggles on to the station, where his Driver phones for Stuart and Falcon. When they arrive, they help Duke to the next station, where Falcon takes Duke's normal train of passengers to their boat, and Stuart, who was in back, runs around to the front of the train. Once again he teases Granpuff, chanting "Poor old engine! Poor old Engine!" But unbeknownst to him, Duke has a trick up his sleeve. When they come to the "Mountain Road", Duke gathers up every ounce of steam he has before pushing Stuart and pulling his heavy train all the way to the Top Station, making a lot of noise. A little boy asks his father why there are two engines heading this train. The father tells the boy that Stuart had broken down so Duke had to help him! As Stuart seethes with rage, Duke pulls up alongside, laughing - "You can't win!" Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Sleeping Beauty The next night, Thomas finishes his tale about Duke, Stuart and Falcon. Some railway enthusiasts remembered Duke and wanted to find him. For several days they went up to the mountains of the old railway to search, but never found anything. Until one day...one of the searchers falls through the roof of Duke's shed! The men clean Duke up and he's taken to the railway Stuart and Falcon were sold to. They're happy to see Duke again, and Duke is happy again at last. With this, Thomas' story ends, and all the engines go to sleep. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Four Little Engines On a small railway there are four little engines - Skarloey, Rheneas, Sir Handel and Peter Sam. They know everyone and everyone knows them. One morning, the Fat Controller sends Edward to be mended. When he arrives at the works, he sees Skarloey sitting in a shed. After some happy banter, the workmen come to take Edward away, leaving Skarloey alone again - but happy for having talked to him. Meanwhile, Sir Handel was having difficulties with the coaches. He tried to be nice, but they didn't trust him. Suddenly, some sheep strayed on the line and Sir Handel had to stop quickly. The coaches didn't take this very well, and bumped him off the rails! Sir Handel limped home, and his driver was worried that they didn't have any engines to take the train now. Skarloey pipes up and volunteers, even though his parts were worn and needed replacing. Skarloey told the coaches off for being naughty, and set off. He was enjoying his run, but the rails jarred his joints. Eventually a spring gave way and Skarloey was tilted to one side. He promised to get the passengers home anyway. James was waiting at the station when Skarloey slowly puffed in. He puffed away without a word. Skarloey's Driver was very pleased with him, but Skarloey was sad, saying that old engines like him can't pull trains like the young ones. His Driver smiles and promises that Skarloey will be repaired - after all, he deserves it. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
A Bad Day for Sir Handel Skarloey and Rheneas arrive at the sheds one day to find their Drivers with good news: two new engines will be arriving to help their aching wheels. They arrive the next day, and they turn out to be Peter Sam and Sir Handel. Peter Sam is cheerful as always, while Sir Handel complains about the small shed and calls Skarloey, who is resting nearby, "rubbish." Peter Sam hushes him, and apologizes for Sir Handel's rude behaviour. Later that day, Sir Handel is sent to start work first. Again he flies into a temper, all the way to the station, where he meets Gordon. After a brief but humorous exchange, Gordon is left speechless. Sir Handel continues this way to the Top Station, where he finds out he must pull trucks. Even more outraged, to prove his point, he deliberately derails himself and bends the rails apart. After he is put back on the rails, he crawls home to find the Fat Controller waiting for him. For being a disobedient and rude engine, he shuts Sir Handel in the shed until further notice. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Peter Sam and the Refreshment Lady Sir Handel has been shut up in the shed following the events from A Bad Day for Sir Handel. Peter Sam has to do his work as well as his own, but he doesn't mind. The coaches like him better than Sir Handel! One day, Peter Sam stops at a station. Henry tells Peter Sam that if Peter Sam was late, than he would leave without him. Peter Sam doesn't realize that Henry was joking and starts to worry. Later, Peter Sam stops at the canal by the Refreshment Lady's tea shop. He always waits until she climbs on board. But this day was different. Peter Sam starts without the Refreshment Lady in a fit of impatience! He's soon stopped a little way from the station, where she gets on board. They reach the station in record time. Peter Sam apologizes, and tells her what Henry had said. She laughs at this foolishness and tells him that he's a guaranteed connection. But before Peter Sam can tell Henry off, he chortles away, while Peter Sam seethes in silence! Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Trucks Harold the Helicopter watches over the Island of Sodor. One morning, he sees a small diesel engine chuntering along the line. He introduces himself, and the Diesel's name is Rusty, bought to help out on the Skarloey Railway. At the Yard, though, Sir Handel is complaining about having too much work to do. Gordon sees this, and suggests he pretend to be ill so he wouldn't have to work. Sir Handel readily does so, and as there wasn't time to examin him, Peter Sam has to do his work for him. He takes some slate trucks to the quarry and waits for loaded ones to be winched down to him... The loaded trucks at the top of the hill couldn't see properly - they thought Peter Sam was Sir Handel. They break the coupling, roar down the hill and crash straight into Peter Sam! Rusty is quickly called to the rescue, and helps Peter Sam out of the mess before bringing him back to the yard. Sir Handel apologises to Peter Sam about the accident, but the Fat Controller finds out why it had happened - and makes Sir Handel do Peter Sam's work as well while he's being repaired. Sir Handel isn't too happy. That evening, Rusty is on his way home when Harold sees him again. After some cheery banter, the two go their separate ways. Michael Angelis, George Carlin Rusty Helps Peter Sam
Home at Last Skarloey has returned home from being mended. Rusty helps him off his railcar and they set off for home. Meanwhile, at the shed, Peter Sam is depressed and wants to get back to work after his accident, but the Fat Controller tells him to wait - he has a surprise for Peter Sam... The 'surprise' is Skarloey. Peter Sam is glad he's home, and they gossip about the railway. Skarloey remarks that he likes Rusty, but Peter Sam tells him that Duncan - a rough-riding engine with strong language who came as a spare after Peter Sam's accident - doesn't. As Skarloey takes this in, his driver comes up and tells him that Duncan's come off the rails in a tunnel. Skarloey sets off and meets Duncan, who is stuck in the tunnel. He pushes Duncan and the coaches through, while the workmen strengthen the tunnel with poles. Skarloey and Duncan set off for home. Duncan grumbles all the way, but Skarloey just ignores him. That night, the Fat Controller speaks sternly to Duncan, threatening to "cut you down to size." That does the trick, and Duncan is quiet all night. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Rock 'N' Roll Skarloey is enjoying his time back on the railway and meets Rusty, complementing him on the work he's done with the track. Rusty warns him that there's still one bad bit just before the first station where an engine might come off - especially Duncan. Duncan overhears this and asks what Rusty's talking about. Rusty tells him, but Duncan brushes him off and insults him. Next morning, James is waiting at the station for Duncan. When Duncan arrives (late), he complains about Rusty. James tells him of when a Diesel came into his yard and how he sent it packing. Of course, this isn't true, but Duncan believes him, and wants Rusty to be sent packing. He swaggers along the line - "Send Rusty packing! Send Rusty packing!" - when he comes off the rails just before the first station! When Rusty is told to go and help, he refuses because of how Duncan called him names. Skarloey reminds him about the passengers, and Rusty quickly heads to the rescue. When they reach Duncan, workmen and passengers lever Duncan back onto the rails and he can complete his journey. That night, Duncan apologises to Rusty. The two friends promise to work on the bad bit of line first thing tomorrow. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Special Funnel It was winter on the Island of Sodor. Peter Sam's funnel hadn't felt right since his accident in Trucks and couldn't wait to get his new one. The other engines laughed about it - Peter Sam's continual talking about had become quite a joke. A few days later, the weather changed, and Rusty had to go and help some workmen repair a bridge that had been damaged. Peter Sam is careful as he puffs across the bridge, but when he goes through a tunnel, his funnel hits an icicle and falls off! They have to continue on, until his driver spots an old piece of drainpipe by the side of the road. When the other engines see this, they laugh even harder, but eventually Peter Sam gets his new funnel, which, although it looks strange, helps him puff a lot. The other engines don't laugh now! Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Steam Roller Sir Handel has special wheels with wider grips, and he would not stop boasting about them to the other engines. So, to put an end to Sir Handel's bragging, Duke tells him that with his wheels he would be "just the engine" to deal with George. George is a steamroller who is particularly rude - "Railways are no good, turn 'em into roads!" Sir Handel thinks, with his wheels, he could give George a run for his money. One morning, Sir Handel meets George at a level crossing. George accuses Sir Handel of thinking he's as good as George with his steamroller wheels. Sir Handel denies this...and says he's better. George fumes off. That evening, Sir Handel takes a train of freight cars down that line. He sees George rolling home, and despite there barely being room to pass, Sir Handel and George both continue side by side, swapping insults, until George crashes into Sir Handel's train. Everyone argues about whose fault the crash was until a policeman comes along to sort it out. Workmen soon put up a barrier between the road and railway. Sir Handel believes he had made George go away, and talks of nothing but steamrollers, to the disappointment of Rheneas and the others. However, some little boys soon make fun of him, and Sir Handel has never spoken of steamrollers since. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Passengers and Polish Duncan is in such a temper when he isn't polished that he starts being difficult. When one of Skarloey's coaches comes off the rails, Duncan, miffed at yet more extra work, sees to it, and takes the rear coaches home. He stops once on the causeway to build steam, but he's not trying. He continues grumbling, before stopping on the viaduct near the station. His Driver and Fireman both try to make him move, but he will not budge. So Skarloey, has to come and pull him and the train to the station. The passengers are cross at such antics, and all tell the Fat Controller what a bad railway it is. Later that night, Duncan is resting in the sheds when he is visited by the Fat Controller. He scolds Duncan - "No passengers means no polish!" - but Duncan is still obstinate about the whole matter and Duncan says it the other way around, to himself. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Gallant Old Engine The day after Duncan had stopped on a viaduct because he was in a temper, Skarloey reprimands him and says that that Rheneas will teach him some sense. When Peter Sam asks why, he replies that it was because he saved the railway, and the old engine tells Duncan and Peter Sam about the time when it was just Skarloey and Rheneas on the railway... It was hard times, and Skarloey was on his last wheels, so Rheneas took over some trains for him. One wet and foggy day, Rheneas was hauling a full train, with passengers crammed even into the guard's van. He was going along fine, when suddenly, "OOOH-I've got a CRAMP!" After inspecting him, his Driver said that something was broken, and asked if he could make it to the next station. Rheneas bravely agrees to the challenge, and with everyone cheering him on, he gallantly plunges on. At last, his efforts are rewarded, and he reaches the Top Station. The passengers thank him, and after that he is sent to the Works. Duncan thanks Skarloey for telling him the story, and he agrees that passengers were important after all. A few days later, Rheneas arrives home with Edward, and all the engines are there to welcome him back. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Rusty to the Rescue Rusty is working happily, but a new steam engine is needed to run the line. Rusty soon meets up with Douglas, and asks him about the time he saved Oliver from scrap. Douglas tells Rusty that the railway he saved Oliver from is only used by diesels now. Rusty decides to go to that railway to find an engine. The next day, he journeys to the other railway, where He is held up by the diesels. Posing as a "shed and sidings inspections diesel", Rusty gets past them and finds and rescues an engine, Stepney. When Stepney and Rusty arrive back at the Fat Controller's railway, all the engines welcome Stepney. Stepney is now working the line happily and everyone calls him "The Bluebell Engine". Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Thomas and Stepney Thomas is proud of his branch line. But when he meets up with Percy, Percy tells him of another engine with a famous branch line. Meanwhile, that engine - Stepney - is feeling down, as his line isn't very long. One day, though, Stepney is invited to visit the Fat Controller's railway. When he arrives at the big station, the engines welcome him heartily, and he shunts with Duck all afternoon. That evening, Thomas arrives and tells Stepney that he has a train to take. But not yet...after Thomas leaves, an important man asks for a special train ahead of any others. Thomas is shunted onto a siding as he watches Stepney charge through, pulling the special train, into the night. The next morning, Thomas is very angry about being shunted. Stepney comes up and apologises, explaining that Duck allowed him to take the Special...but not knowing the line made him a little nervous. Thomas understands, and the two engines make up as Thomas tells Stepney all about his branch line. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Train Stops Play Stepney is shunting with Thomas, Toby and Percy. He comments on how they have such a beautiful railway and that he misses trucks. Surprised at their incredulous looks, Stepney explains that he thinks they are quite fun. So, with permission from their drivers, Percy lets Stepney take some of his. Thomas and Toby are left dumbfounded. After working in the yards for a bit, Stepney takes a train of trucks filled with straw out, and stops at a signal, where a cricket game is going on in the field below. The batsman hits the ball so hard it falls into one of Stepney's trucks, unbeknownst to him or his crew, and they leave just as the signal drops. Determined to get their ball back, some of the players fire up Caroline, their old buggy, and a chase ensues. Stepney's driver, seeing them out the cab window, misunderstands, and they disappear into a tunnel. The players continue on to a station where Stepney is resting, and finally retrieve their precious cricket ball. But they soon discover that Caroline has broken down from an overheating engine. So, with some clever thinking, the players and stationmaster work together to load Caroline onto a flatcar, and Stepney takes them back to the field, where they all enjoy the rest of the game. Caroline admits that while trains may be a bit silly, they "save the wear on a poor car's wheels". Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Bowled Out It's Stepney's last week on the Island of Sodor, and the Fat Controller tells him that he will be missed...and also that a diesel will arrive to help with the work as well. When the diesel does arrive, he is snooty and rude to the other engines, who hold an 'indignation meeting' to talk about him. Next day, the diesel is preparing to take the Express while an inspector watches him go about his work. Suddenly, his hat is lifted off by the wind... The diesel doesn't notice, and rolls towards his coaches - before spluttering and stopping! The inspector sees that his hat has been sucked into the diesel's air intake, but the Fat Controller says there's no time for that, and asks Duck and Stepney to take the coaches instead. They do so, and deliver the coaches to Gordon - and early too. When it's time for Stepney to leave, all the engines farewell him, and say that he's always welcome back - as indeed they are on Stepney's line. But what happened to the diesel? He had sidled away earlier, saying goodbye to no-one but leaving behind a nasty smell...and a battered bowler hat! Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Henry and the Elephant Thomas is taking his train along the branch line and arrives at a station. The Fat Controller is there, and calls him "right on time, and really reliable." Meanwhile the big engines are moaning about having to shunt. Percy arrives and tells them that the Circus is in town. All the engines forgot to be tired and cross...at least until the circus leaves - Gordon and Henry are jealous of James when he gets to pull the train away. Later, Henry is called to investigate a blockage in a tunnel. Workmen go in to dig it out, but it seems to be alive! Henry tries to push it out...but is himself pushed out by the blockage - a large, angry elephant! It had escaped from the circus train, and its keeper is soon reunited with it. The elephant drinks 3 buckets of water and is just about to start on a fourth when Henry lets off steam. The elephant hooshes water in surprise - all over Henry! That night, Gordon and James tease Henry about it. But Thomas tells him not to mind, because he was very brave, and really reliable as well. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Toad Stands By Since Oliver's accident with a turntable well, the trucks have lost all respect for him. To make matters worse, a truck called S.C. Ruffey (pronounced "Scruffey") leads them in a song. Toad is worried, and comes up with a plan. For Oliver's next train, S.C. Ruffey is marshalled next to the engine. When Oliver starts up, S.C. Ruffey orders the trucks to "hold back". But this has an unexpected effect, when Oliver literally pulls S.C. Ruffey in half! The Fat Controller explains that the trucks had rotten wood and rusty frames, but nevertheless the trucks gain a new respect for Oliver. S.C. Ruffey is rebuilt and becomes a well-behaved truck. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Bulls' Eyes Daisy the diesel railcar is being boastful and conceited. She tells Toby that the key to dealing with animals is to toot and look them in the eye, and accuses him of being scared. Unbeknownst to her, a bull named Champion has escaped on to the branch line. Daisy meets Champion, and discovers that getting animals off the line isn't as easy as it looks, and is frightened away. Toby comes to help, and shoos the bull off the track. At a station, Daisy meets some boys who offer her some "bullseyes". She does not think the joke is funny and scuttles off to her shed. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Thomas and the Special Letter One morning, as the engines are getting ready to go to work, the Fat Controller has a special announcement. He has a letter from a five-year-old girl on the mainland who has heard all about the engines' fame and popularity. In the letter, the girl asks for the engines to visit her. The Fat Controller tells the engines that they are going to the train shed in the girl's town to surprise her, as a thank-you present for the letter. The engines make sure they are in their top-notch conditions for the surprise. A day before the trip, Thomas is bragging to Oliver about his race with Bertie (from Thomas and Bertie, Season 1). But as he reenacts coming to a stop at the buffers on the end of the track, the buffers give way, and Thomas slides down a grassy hill and into a brick wall. His front is damaged, and jeopardizes the engines' excursion. But somehow, Thomas is mended on time, and the engines give the little girl her surprise. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Paint Pots and Queens The railway is a abuzz with excitement; the engines are all talking about the upcoming visit of the Queen to Sodor. Everyone is excited—everyone that is, except Thomas and Gordon. Most recently, they had gotten themselves into trouble and put themselves in disgrace, and so Gordon, who had recently been forbidden to pull the Express, is disqualified from taking the Royal Train. Henry believes himself to be the most likely candidate to do the job, but when he falls victim to a startled painter working on the station (who falls from his ladder and spills paint over him!), Henry knows he won't get the job either. And so the Fat Controller decides to call upon Gordon and Thomas instead, realising now they are both sorry and deserving of a treat. Thomas shunts the coaches in the yard for the big day, and Gordon gets the grand honour of pulling the Royal Train. Michael Angelis, George Carlin Thomas Meets the Queen
Fish Henry is taking The Flying Kipper again, and on this particular journey, needs to take extra vans as well. This means he will now be able to get a banker engine to help him over Gordon's Hill. The job is assigned to Duck, who rudely scoffs at Thomas' advise about fish (see Thomas Goes Fishing). Duck waits for Henry to arrive at Edward's Station, and when there, begins to push Henry's train up the hill. However, Henry gets ahead of himself and begins pulling away from Duck, at which point, the train's tail-lamp falls off, leaving Duck with no clear indication of where Henry is. He soon finds out when he smashes into the back of Henry's train! The Fat Controller forgives Duck for his folly and assures him that the incident wasn't his fault, although Duck starts to regret throwing Thomas' advice into his face earlier on. Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Special Attraction Toby is very excited to be attending a parade at a seaside village; his driver tells him he's the 'special attraction' this year. However, when he arrives, he learns that there won't be enough room for him, so he has to go home. Toby is very sad. Before Percy gets a chance to learn why Toby's so sad, the Fat Controller tells the little green engine to go to the harbour to shunt some trucks. The trucks' loads are for Bulstrode, a grumpy stone barge who is always complaining. The trucks are glad when Percy arrives, but when Percy is shunting them, he isn't taking care, and shunts them through some buffers. They fall straight off the harbour wall, landing in Bulstrode's hull. This causes Bulstrode to sink, and once the trucks are lifted out of him, his remains are towed to the beach, for children to play on him. When Percy arrives back at the station, Toby is no longer glum; both he and Percy are special attractions in a way. After all, all they have to do is smile and blow whistles at everyone! Michael Angelis, George Carlin
Mind That Bike Tom Tipper the postman always helps Thomas and Percy load their trains when they take the mail, and the engines appreciate that he will deliver the post where their rails won't reach. One day, though, a new postman is at the station, and he dumps the post on the platform before disappearing, riding a bicycle. Percy is worried. Next day, Tom is back, but very sad, as his van has been taken out of service and he has to ride a bicycle. Just then, a man shouts to Tom, asking him to sign some important papers in the Fat Controller's office. Tom does so...but leans his bike on Percy's mail coaches. Percy's driver hadn't seen this, and starts off. As a result, Tom's bike is destroyed! Percy is very sorry, and Tom is even more worried - what will happen now he doesn't have a bicycle either? He soon finds out...next time Percy takes the post, he sees Tom on the platform - and a shiny new van behind him! Tom explains that the postmaster decided a van was much better than a new bike and worth the expense. Percy is very happy for helping Tom - even if it was by accident! Michael Angelis, George Carlin

[edit] Season 5

Number Name Synopsis Screenshot Narrators American Name
Cranky Bugs There is a new crane at Brendam Docks. His name is Cranky, a name that describes his personality, which is...cranky. Cranky thinks Thomas and Percy are trying to aggravate him on purpose, so he causes trouble for Thomas and Percy (who are not trying to aggravate the crane at all). He does this from dropping a crate of powder on Percy's cab to improperly loading Thomas. The Fat Controller jumps to a conclusion, and punishes Thomas and Percy for causing confusion and delay. Cranky is pleased with his hollow victory, but that night, a bad storm keeps Henry, James, Gordon, and Duck trapped at a rickety old dockside shed. And just when it seems it couldn't get worse, an old tramp steamer runs aground right into the shed. The shed collapses on the engines, and in the process pushes Cranky over onto his side. The engines need help, Cranky needs help, and the only ones who can come to his aid are Thomas and Percy. The two tank engines set Cranky upright again, who in turn frees the four other engines from under the shed. Everything looks perfect, but it's too good to be true... Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Horrid Lorry The docks are always busy. One day when Percy is late, Cranky teases him by saying that lorries will come and do his work for him. Percy thinks this is nonsense, but sure enough, three lorries arrive later, and they are very rude. One even has the audacity to call Percy a steaming lump of scrap-iron! Later, Toby is resting at the quarry when one of the lorries pulls up. After a heated exchange between them, Toby huffs off to the flour mill to collect his train. But he finds another of the lorries there already! Still miffed, Toby goes down an old line that leads to a gorge, and a road runs along a cliff, much like the one on the Skarloey Railway. He observes a lorry swerving along the road, loaded heavily and spinning out of control, when it spins out and fall off the road and smashes into the gorge below. Meanwhile, Thomas and James are discussing the lorries at the docks, when they see a seaweed-covered one being moved onto the dock by crane. When asked what happened, the foreman explains that it reversed too much and fell in the sea. They then discover the last broke down because it was too heavily loaded with flour. Thomas later finds them all on flatcars, and christens them "Smashed, Broken and Sunk." They are sent away, never to return again. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
A Better View for Gordon It's a morning at the shed, and Gordon is being obnoxious and boastful. The morning is turning out to be a very bad day for him. First, he will have to test an empty express at the new station that has just been finished, which will mean idling, and Gordon detests idling in stations. Then, after reluctantly agreeing, he takes the dummy express only to find out that his pipes are clogged and keeping him from his top speed. The last straw is when Gordon is coming into the new terminal station and going to a blank wall with buffers. He wants a view "where I can see people and people can see me!" The test is soon complete, and Gordon is eager to start home. But just when it seems things couldn't get any worse, Gordon's condition goes downhill, and he grinds to a halt in a siding. When Gordon is repaired, he feels much better, and is delighted when he is told he is to take the Fat Controller to the new station for the Grand Opening. Things are looking good, but right before Gordon nears the station, his brakes fail to stop him, and Gordon rushes into the station way too fast. His leading wheels are torn off from him as he crashes out the other side of the station overlooking the valley. Gordon didn't want a better view this way! But at the end of the story, Gordon is repaired, the station is reopened, and he gets his view in a unique way. How? You'll have to find that out for yourself. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Lady Hatt's Birthday Party The Fat Controller is looking forward to his wife's Lady Hatt's birthday party at Kirkronan on his way his car gets stuck in a hole in the road then he sees Caroline who gives him a lift but she breaks down. Then George rolls by and Jem Cole who was driving him asked The Fat Controller if he wanted a lift and he said yes. But he gets squirted with oil then worst happens when George rolls into a ditch and The Fat Controller gets dirty. Luckily Thomas is waiting and his fireman is off so he has to act as the fireman but he makes it just in time with some flowers he is not in trouble but no one said it was fancy dress. Everyone laughed and soon he was cleaned up and they have a wonderful time. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
James and the Trouble with Trees James is getting a new coat of paint, which makes him extremely boastful. He shows off to Henry and Thomas, and ignores Terence's warning about trees too close to the line. He soon learns his lesson, when an old tree almost falls on him! Luckily Thomas saves him, and they are both happy. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Gordon and the Gremlin A VIP is to visit Sodor, and all the engines are excited. Some problems occur however, and Oliver and Thomas are convinced they are gremlins. Gordon disagrees, but soon has problems delivering the VIP herself. The VIP's dog also causes trouble, but soon all is fixed and revealed at the docks. The VIP was the Fat Controller's mother, who then named her dog 'Gremlin'. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Bye George! George the Steamroller has been ruder than ever lately and has caused great trouble for the engines. First he tarmacs part of Thomas’ line, whilst ripping up an old Branch Line near to it, which leaves poor Thomas to roll off the tracks and into a barn! Next George blocks Duck’s path when he tries to get into the yard, which means that one of his trucks is fowling the Main Line. Gordon, unaware of the danger, thunders by with the Express and runs into the stranded truck. In the end, the Fat Controller punishes George by taking away his roller and leaving his flywheel, his only moving part, to work the machinery at the sawmills. After a week of being cooped up, Thomas doubts that he’ll learn his lesson! Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Baa! A competition for “Best Dressed Station” is being held across Sodor. Percy is delivering fruit and vegetables to decorate Maithwaite station, but has a run in with a hungry ram. Apparently this ram has caused trouble around the area. Maithwaite is soon beautifully decorated, but disaster strikes when the decorations become vandalised. The passengers discover the ram in the waiting room, and accuse it as the culprit—but discover that it’s really keeping some naughty boys from getting away. The boys confess that it was them who made the mess, and help to tidy it up. Thanks to the ram, Maithwaite wins first prize. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Put Upon Percy Percy is grumbling that he has too much work, hence “put upon”. After an extremely busy day, he returns to the shed tired and dirty. Next day, however, disaster strikes at the coalmines, and an avalanche erupts. Percy and his crew take shelter by a canvas barrier along the Cliffside, which saves them from being crushed by the rocks, but gets them buried all the same. After being dug out, Percy is rewarded with a new coat for his bravery. He doesn’t mind that being put upon him! Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Toby and the Flood Heavy storms have been flooding the Island. Toby is sent to inspect the dam, and discovers a few leaks in it. On his way back to warn the village, he has to cross a dangerous old bridge, where Percy is waiting for him. Toby is halfway across, when the dam bursts, and the floodwaters carry Toby on his section of bridge downriver. Percy and Harold work together and manage to save Toby from going over a waterfall. When the floods are over, the villagers celebrate Toby’s bravery with a party. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Haunted Henry Edward tells Henry that whenever an owl hoots, a mist appears, as well as a ghost, but Henry takes this as a hoax. When Henry has to deliver goods to the station by the lake, an owl hoots and he sees a light in the station where he has to go. Henry gets so spooked they end their task by leaving the station. Next morning, however, he has to do the same thing with some Troublesome Trucks and the journey is full of spooks and surprises. On the way, the Troublesome Trucks got spooked by the scary sites, which Henry shouldn't be frightened of, because it was actually good news, not bad news. After the Troublesome Trucks fall into a ravine, Henry's driver and fireman discover that their ghost is actually Old Bailey the fogman who warned them about the viaduct. Old Bailey asks if he can run the station again, and his wish was granted, and is now described as '"The friendliest ghost on the island"' by The Fat Controller. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Double Teething Troubles Bill and Ben are overworked, so the Fat Controller decides to bring a new diesel to help them. Unfortunately, the new diesel, Derek, breaks down when he tries to climb a steep hill, and apologetically says it’s a cause of teething troubles. I Dont Know misunderstands and confuses the twins that the new diesel has a toothache! Luckily, Duck explains to Bill and Ben what it really means. Next day, Derek is mended and tries to help Bill and Ben take a heavy train of trucks away, but breaks down again. Bill and Ben finish the journey anyway and are congratulated by The Fat Controller. In the end, the twins feel sorry for Derek after he tried so hard to help them. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Stepney Gets Lost Stepney is sent to the quarry to help Mavis and Toby for a change. He stays there and is asked to take a goods train along a new branch line. Stepney forgets to let the Fat Controller know of what he is doing, and eagerly does the late-night job. But on his way home, he becomes lost in fog and goes along the wrong line. When the fog lifts, Stepney realises to his horror that he’s in the scrap yards! ‘Arry and Bert the scrap yard diesels arrive and are about to scrap him when the Fat Controller arrives to stop them, which was lucky that he was visiting the scrap yards that night! Stepney returns home a happier—and grateful—“Bluebell” engine. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Toby's Discovery Toby takes the Fat Controller and his grandchildren to the beach when Stephen and Bridget (the grandchildren) build a sandcastle in the shape of one on the map. The Fat Controller is interested, so he asks Toby to take them there. However, the Fat Controller also wants to see the mine. When Toby has to guard the deserted place overnight, he hears a strange wheeesh that scares him. He soon discovers his job is, thankfully, taken. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Something in the Air Thomas has an accident when a crate of fish lands on his boiler when he was picking up Henry’s trucks. As he speeds along the coastal line to the Docks, they discover that the line has been damaged by high tides, which can take Thomas’ weight but not big engines like Henry. When night falls, Thomas tries to explain to Henry about the danger, but Henry is too busy teasing him of his fishy smell! However, the Yard Manager fails to warn Henry also, when told of the news, and Henry slides off the tracks, where he is buffer deep in seawater! As soon as the tides are high enough, floating cranes lift Henry out of the water, where the big green engine is humiliated when he finishes his journey to the Docks in a barge full of smelly fish! After a wash down, Henry says sorry for teasing Thomas. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Thomas, Percy and Old Slow Coach Thomas and Percy find an old coach which is due for scrap. This makes them quite sad, so they set about finding a new home for her. Disaster strikes as the engineer's depot catches fire. Thomas and Percy hurry to save the day, resorting to water from their tanks after the hoses run out of water, but the engineer's depot is ruined. However, Thomas and Percy have a plan, and Old Slow Coach is used as a temporary fire depot. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Thomas and the Rumours When Thomas hears that the local school children's playground is closed due to bad soil, Thomas wishes for help. Meanwhile, there's rumours among the engines that Harold the Helicopter will replace them, as the Fat Controller is using him to take an important visitor around the island. While trying to prove he's better than Harold Gordon runs into a tunnel and has an accident discovering new fresh sand. Gordon is alright, and it's revealed that Harold was taking the visitor around the island to find a suitable spot for a new playground. The tunnel sand is used, and the playground is opened. Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin

But even that doesn’t go well when Harold is late delivering the mail. Soon they are on their way, but have to stop yet again at a signal. The signalman had fallen asleep waiting for them, and after waiting ages for the signal to change Oliver decides to keep going until they reach the signal box. But they are diverted to an old track and end up crashing at an old run down station. They cross the same bridge that night, and some fireflies hover around - to Duncan, in the shape that looks like an engine. 131 Salty's Secret Salty, a new dockyard diesel engine, is summoned to the rock quarry to help Bill, Ben and Mavis with an important job. He is saddened because he cannot be near the sea, but gets on with the job without fuss. Bill and Ben think that the trucks will give Salty a bad time, but they are proved wrong when he shows he can handle them with ease. He teaches them that the way to keep them under control is to sing to them, but they fail miserably. Before long, the important job is completed and Salty is sent to work at the dockyard, where he feels much happier. File:TTTepno131.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Harvey to the Rescue A strange-looking engine with a crane arm called Harvey arrives on the island on trial. His examination run is to take place in the next few days before the railway board, but the other engines look down on him. This makes him feel very sad. The next day, some trucks drag Percy down and hill and cause a derailment at Bulgy’s Bridge which blocks the road, meaning that Bertie cannot get through with the railway board (who are going to attend Harvey’s trial). Harvey is summoned to the rescue, and with his crane arm, he helps to clear the mess swiftly. The railway board is impressed and the engines welcome Harvey aboard as part of the fleet. File:TTTepno132.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
No Sleep for Cranky Cranky the tower crane works all night and day, getting very little rest and very little company. One morning, he is loading some pipes onto a flat truck when Salty arrives, noticing that he is in a bad mood and suggests that he needs company. Cranky doesn’t listen, but the arrival of Bill and Ben puts him in an even ‘crankier’ mood. He gets so annoyed with the engine’s constant chatter that he accidentally knocks over a shed, blocking the line. The twins stay awake all night, listening to Salty’s stories and the next day, Cranky is more than pleased to see Harvey arrive to clear the mess. File:TTTepno133.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin, Michael Brandon
A Bad Day for Harold the Helicopter Percy enjoys pulling the mail train, but Harold is convinced that he could make a much swifter job of it. His chance to prove himself comes when a broken signal means Percy cannot get through and whilst the workmen hastily try to repair it, the mail bags are loaded into Harold’s harness. He is feeling so clever that he decides to take them all at once, but the weight is far too much for him to handle. The mailbags get stuck in a Harold finds himself diving nose-first into a haystack. Once the signal is repaired, Percy sends for help and Harold realizes he is not so clever after all. File:TTTepno134.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin, Michael Brandon A Bad Day for Harold
Eilzabeth the Vintage Lorry Thomas breaks one of his siderods whilst taking a special to the docks. His crew search an old barn nearby for a telephone, but instead find an old steam lorry called Elizabeth. She is rude and arrogant to Thomas, but reluctantly agrees to take the crew to the fitter’s yard to collect new siderods. She arrives back just in time and Thomas pulls into the dockyard exhausted, only for Elizabeth to arrive moments later. The Fat Controller reveals that he used to drive Elizabeth when he was a young man and he is so happy to see her again that he has her restored by Jem Cole. File:TTTepno135.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin Elizabeth the Vintage Quarry Truck
The Fogman It's winter on Sodor and the first fog had started to roll in from the sea. Thomas enjoys steaming along the misty valley but is usually unaware of rocks falling onto the tracks so his friend Cyril the Fogman places detonators to warn all the engines that their is fog ahead. However, the Fat Controller replaces Cyril with a very noisy foghorn, and the engines are sad when Cyril is replaced. Soon the foghorn makes a lot of noise as Percy passes with his train, but when he is out of sight a landslide begins and crushes the foghorn, so there is no way to warn the engines of the fallen rocks. Thomas unfortunately hits the rocks and soon Cyril arrives to help warn engines he has been derailed. After saving Toby from crashing into Thomas, he is given his job back and the engines feel happy to have him back instead of the noisy horn. File:TTTepno136.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Jack Jumps In Thomas has a special delivery to take to the quarry--a new front loader, by the name of Jack. He is smart, good-looking, and strong. But he is overly boisterous and eager. Upon his arrival at the quarry, Jack goes to all the machines of the Pack (the nickname for the construction company) and asks them if he can help or have a job. One by one, they all direct Jack to Miss Jenny Packard, the Pack's equivalent to the Fat Controller. Miss Jenny calms Jack down rather than giving him a job on the spot ("Safety First", she tells him). Jack hangs around, and gradually makes friends with the machines, particularly with a green, wheeled excavator by of the name of Alfie. But just when it seems that Jack has been tamed, Oliver (a larger excavator) is asked to move some rocks up a quarry hill/road to a little hopper. With a cry of "I'll do it!", Jack scoops up the rocks in his shovel, and heads up the dirt road with the machines shouting at him to stop and turn back. Jack ignores their calls, and as a result, he tips over on the road and slides down the hill on his side in a pile of sand. Miss Jenny is indignant with Jack, and tells him firmly and sternly "Safety First means that you don't jump in." Because of this infraction, Jack is temporarily suspended from working. He must now redeem himself to prove his money's worth. File:TTTepno137.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
A Friend in Need With a chance from Miss Jenny, Jack has been given a trial with the Pack. His first assignment is building a new road under an old railway arch bridge. When he starts out with Alfie, Jack works well dumping rocks into Max the Dumptruck. Then, Oliver the Excavator is asked to move some dirt. Jack sees this and almost moves the dirt, but then he remembers Miss Jenny's instructions. He catches himself, admits to Oliver that this is his Oliver's job, and returns to dumping rocks into Max. The rest of the morning runs smoothly until Ned, a clumsy steam shovel, forgets to lower his arm and knocks out some keystones in the arch bridge being worked under. A few pieces of sand start to give way, right as Jack watches. Suddenly, he hears Thomas' whistle he's headed in the direction of the dangerous bridge! Jack rushes underneath with his shovel raised up against the roof of the arch, which is starting to implode. Thomas's crew realizes hears a warning cry from Jack, shouting that the bridge is unstable. The driver shuts off steam, but it is too late to stop Thomas, who skids onto the bridge. The bridge deck begins to sag under the weight of Thomas. In a desperate attempt, Jack pushes up even harder. He can't hold the bridge up any longer; Thomas and Jack back away, just as the bridge collapses to the ground. In the end, the machines crowd around Jack in the work yard, who is feeling guilty about jumping in. While saving Thomas from impending doom, Jack has bent his arms very badly. He apologizes to Miss Jenny, but rather than scolding Jack, she praises him for keeping Thomas on the rails. As a reward, he is now an official member of the Pack. File:TTTepno138.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
It's Only Snow The engines are down-heartened when they learn that must wear their snowplows during the winter season. Thomas is especially cross, but he soon cheers up when he is given the task of delivering a Christmas tree for Toby to take to the mountain village. But Toby cannot get through the snow alone, so Thomas leads the cavalcade onwards. He has a tough time, but when a rock on the track causes his snowplow to break away and knock over a water tower, he must press on without it. After much hard work, Thomas finally leads the way into the station to cheers from the happy villagers. File:TTTepno139.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Twin Trouble Donald and Douglas often work together and one day are pulling a heavy load along the main line together, but when Trevor's hay cart gets stuck on the line, the twins have an accident. Donald blames Douglas for pushing him into it which causes a big argument between them and later they refuse to work with each other for the rest of the day. The next day Donald goes to work with Duck at the smelters. Thomas worries that they will miss one another, but they still refuse to talk to each other and set off their own ways to work. However, Douglas later misses Donald and tries to talk to him but Donald still demands an apology about the accident with the hay cart, which only makes Douglas more angry. Donald has an accident the next day and the only one who can help him back to the rails was Douglas, and after being rescued the two twins make up and are glad to be back together again. File:TTTepno140.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
The World's Strongest Engine Diesel is drafted in at the dockyard when Henry is sent away for repairs, much to the chagrin of the other engines. Diesel goes about determined to show how much more reliable diesel engines are then steam engines. The trucks encourage him to try pulling all of them at the same time, a challenge that he gladly expects as a way of proving himself to be ‘The World’s Strongest Engine’. But unknown to him, the trucks' brakes are ‘hard-on’, and Diesel pulls so hard that the coupling breaks, sending him through a pair of buffers and landing on a barge. Henry returns just as Diesel is sent packing, and pulls the train with ease. Thomas and Percy realize that trucks have their uses after all. File:TTTepno141.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Scaredy Engines The engines look forward to Halloween time on Sodor by watching the Fat Controller's fireworks and see the children in their Halloween costumes. On this particular Halloween, the engines listen to Edward's spooky tale about the Ghost Engine that haunts the smelters yard looking for his lost whistle. Later, the Fat Controller sends Thomas, Percy and Duck to the smelters to fetch some scrap. Thomas teases Percy about the Ghost Engine by calling him a scaredy engine, until Duck is asked the yard manager to stay and finish up inside the smelters shed. But when Thomas was by himself, ever sound and every shadow was spooky, and when Thomas was going in the wrong direction and sets off an old steam whistle, he soon learns a lesson that teasing the engines about being scared is the bad thing to do on Halloween, Thomas forgives Percy for his teasing, and they go to watch the fireworks. File:TTTepno142.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Percy and the Haunted Mine ‘The Most Beautiful Station’ competition draws near and Percy is sent to collect shrubs from Maithwaite. But along the way, he witnesses a building sink into the ground on the site of an abandoned mine. Donald and Douglas tell him that it is the work of the legendary ‘Naughty Gnomes’, which frightens Percy even more. But when he is sent back to the mine to collect some trucks, another building sinks into the ground. In fright, Percy bumps the trucks and gnomes spill out. Percy is convinced that the legend is true, only to learn that they are in fact garden gnomes for the station competition. File:TTTepno143.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Middle Engine None of the engines like being a ‘Middle Engine’, and 'Arry & Bert enjoy using this to an advantage. When Percy comes to collect some trucks from the smelter, the twins sandwich him between two sets of trucks. Not only does this make James laugh at him, but also being stuck in the middle causes Percy to be shunted onto the tipper’s loading ramp by mistake. James becomes conceited when the Fat Controller assigns him to Percy’s task whilst he investigates into the disturbance. He is determined not to let the diesels fool him, but when they succeed in making him a ‘Middle Engine’, James refuses to move. It is only when Percy quickly arrives on the scene that the train finally gets moving. File:TTTepno144.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
James and the Red Balloon Thomas brings a hot-air balloon to the airfield to take visitors on air-tours of the island. But James is suspicious and convinces Thomas that the balloon will take away their passenger traffic. To make matters worse, the balloon runs out of hot air and lands on the track right in front of James whilst he waits at a level crossing. The balloon deflates and in fright, James lets out steam, which sets the balloon going once again. This makes the two engine fret even more until they learn that the balloon has attracted so many tourists that their passenger traffic has increased. James takes a new liking to the balloon, and wishes that he could fly just like it. File:TTTepno145.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin, Michael Brandon
Jack Frost The winter weather is becoming increasingly colder, and so the Fat Controller assigns James and Percy to the task of making extra coal deliveries across the island. Thomas jokingly warns Percy to be careful of Jack Frost, which Percy takes seriously, but James rubs off as nonsense. Later that night, when Percy is taking coal to Lower Suddery, he finds himself stranded in the snow and becomes coated in ice, moments before James passes and mistakes him for the mysterious Jack Frost. File:TTTepno146.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldiwn
Gordon Takes a Tumble Gordon’s dignity gets the better of him when he looks down his nose at Salty for being a goods engine. But Salty laughs, saying that Gordon is simply getting ‘too big for his buffers’. That night, mist from the mainland causes confusion and delay at the harbour, and Gordon finds that he must take an overnight goods train at the last minute. Determined to show Salty that he can handle trucks he impatiently sets off, but when he is accidentally diverted onto an old branch line the next morning, he lands himself in trouble when the rails can’t take his weight. Gordon emerges from the accident a wiser engine. File:TTTepno147.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin, Michael Brandon
Percy's Chocolate Crunch A water shortage on the island has reduced the engines' privileges to one washdown a day. This makes Percy rather upset. However, despite the dirty conditions of the railway, he tries to work cooperatively with the trucks. And of course, they only make things worse. Percy is pushed under a coal chute (right as the operator starts pouring the coal), and gusts of wind from Harold the Helicopter's rotor sends piles of ashes flying...right onto Percy! To help cope with the frustration, Percy takes some sugar vans that must be delivered to the Mr. Jolly's chocolate factory. He approaches the factory on the sloped tracks that go up to the loading and delivery dock, which are coated with oil from a leaky truck. Percy applies his brakes, but the oil makes him skid past the dock and right into the factory wall! There are a series of gloops and splats from the heart of the factory, and Percy pops out the other end, covered in chocolate! He is brought back to the sheds by Duck on a well wagon, and surprises the engines. They all poke fun at him and his "tasteful" appearance, but the Fat Controller does just the opposite; he praises Percy for working hard, rewarding him with his washdown, and a new coat of paint! File:TTTepno148.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Buffer Bother Bill and Ben are being inspected by the Fat Controller, where it is discovered that Ben's buffers are damaged. He is sent to the works to get new ones, and Bill is extremely jealous. Mavis tells Bill to be glad that he is in perfect order, but he doesn't listen. When the trucks tease him, Bill becomes so angry that while trying to bump a truck, he ends up in a ditch! Ben arrives with his new buffers just in time to hear Bill say "Bust my buffers!", and Bill's buffers are damaged. After Bill comes back from the works, the twins agree that they do everything together, especially getting into trouble! File:TTTepno149.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Toby Had a Little Lamb Toby is flagged down by Farmer McColl on the way home during a furious winter blizzard and learns that some baby lambs are stranded on the hillside. A vet is needed right away, and so the Fat Controller sends him out on Duck. But Duck’s snowplough is useless against the thick snow. Toby remembers his old branch line route and volunteers to take the vet out in search of the lambs. After a challenging journey, they find the lambs and bring them safety home aboard Henrietta. Farmer McColl gratefully thanks Toby for his bravery. File:TTTepno150.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin, Michael Brandon
Thomas, Percy and the Squeak The famous opera singer Alicia Botti is to give a concert and Thomas is selected to collect her from the docks. He becomes conceited and makes Percy miss his wash-down. But on the way to the docks, Thomas hears a strange squeaking sound coming from his train. It is not until Alicia boards the train that it is revealed to be a mouse and she refuses to board. When Percy arrives, still dirty having missed the wash-down, she decides to ride him instead (being grubby makes him look like a real engine!). That night, as Alicia gives her concert, the mouse makes a home in Tidmouth sheds and Thomas and Percy called her Alicia. File:TTTepno151.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Thomas and the Jet Engine Gordon boasts about his speed and the engines wish that for once, they could out beat him. Thomas is later summoned to the dockyard to collect a jet engine, which he must take to the airfield. This makes him feel so important that he becomes impatient, which upsets Cranky. Cranky’s hook accidentally knocks the switch on the jet engine, sending Thomas shooting off down the line, propelled by the powerful engine. Along the way, Thomas speeds straight past Gordon, leaving the big engine in a state of shock. File:TTTepno152.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Edward the Very Useful Engine Edward occasionally acts as banker for heavy trains on the main line in need of assistance on hills, but Gordon feels that he is unreliable and should be retired. This worries Percy, who speaks to the Fat Controller. Edward is sent to help Stepney on the new loop line and Duck is drafted in to take his place. But when Duck’s goods train and Gordon’s Express find themselves at a standstill on the hill, only Edward can help get both trains through. Gordon realizes afterwards that Edward is not as unreliable as he thought. File:TTTepno153.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin, Michael Brandon
Dunkin' Duncan Skarloey, Rheneas and Rusty arrive at the slate mine to help with an important operation with the incline, but Duncan is impatient and wants to get the work done faster. Despite warning from the others that safety should come first, he goes out of his way to prove them wrong and to show off his strength and speed. But disaster strikes when the crew forget to uncouple him from the trucks at the bottom of the incline. Fortunately, his driver jumped clear. A dip in a muddy pond soon makes Duncan apologise for being bossy. File:TTTepno154.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Rusty Saves the Day Skarloey and Rheneas’ old branch line is closed down due to a lack of maintenance, meaning that they are forced to work at the quarry. Rusty takes pity on them and longs to help them out, but his chance comes when a two-week blasting operation means that the engines must find other work. The Fat Controller agrees to the restoring of the old line, but if the work is not done in two weeks time, it must be abandoned. With the unexpected help of Elizabeth, the three engines put all their effort and teamwork into the project, and the line is restored just in time. File:TTTepno155.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin
Faulty Whistles When Peter Sam’s whistle is accidentally knocked off by a low-hanging branch, Duncan enforces that no engine could be considered proper without a whistle. Whilst taking a special goods train, including a new organ for the schoolmaster, he sets out to prove his point about whistles. But he uses it so much that it flies off into a field and cannot be found. Duncan cannot go on without it, but the schoolmaster suggests the humorous idea of using the organ as a substitute. The others made a joke about it, but even Duncan finds the situation amusing. File:TTTepno156.png Michael Angelis, Alec Baldwin

The Fat Controller sends her away to learn her new route, and is instructed to take some coaches with her. With only Annie and Clarabel available, Emily sets off with them but is confused and upset when nobody returns her friendly whistles, especially Thomas. It is not until Oliver informs her of her mistake that she realizes what has happened, and rushes to apologise. Meanwhile, Thomas pulls a set of shining new coaches home from the docks; sulkily presuming they are replacements for Annie and Clarabel. Whilst this is going on, Emily comes across Oliver stranded on a crossing with Thomas approaching not far away. He rushes back to warn the others, but Gordon is in too much of a hurry to listen, so Percy decides to inform the Fat Controller. He finds the manager instructing Thomas to collect the farmer’s prized bull for market day, and yet again Percy is ignored. Later that evening, Thomas heads along Toby’s branch with the farmer’s bull, unaware of the danger ahead, which has become much worse due to a landslide. Thomas ploughs straight into the mud and becomes stuck. As night falls, Percy senses that something is wrong and goes out to find his friend. At long last, he finds Thomas and pulls him free of the mud. As day breaks, the engines are met by the Fat Controller, who promises to listen to Percy more often. They soon lose patience and when sent to collect a rock-crusher from the dockyard, they plan to purposely ignore him from now on. When they arrive back at the quarry, Fergus warns the twins to take care with the rock crusher, but they ignore his every word. But the noise of the heavy rock crusher causes a landslide. Sensing danger, Fergus pushes the twins and the rock crusher out of harms way, moments before being buried under a pile of rock. The twins are stung by guilt and help to rescue Fergus. He refuses to go anywhere near the bridge, meaning that Rheneas must do Skarloey’s work as well as his own. One day, Rheneas is heading back across the bridge when he runs out of water and becomes stranded. Henry arrives to find the two small engines have already left and that he must take the train alone. But no sooner has he left the yard, he grounds to a halt. His driver discovers that the water tank has been leaking and has completely dried up. Thankfully, Emily arrives and pulls Henry to the dockyard, where the Fat Controller is waiting to send him to the works and to scold Thomas and Percy. 163 James and the Queen of Sodor James begins to boast about his role as an ‘important engine’, and strives to be the best – worthy only of ‘important’ tasks. Gordon loses patience and decides to get back at James. His chance arrives when the Fat Controller informs the engines that one of them must collect ‘The Queen of Sodor’ from the canal. Gordon fools James into accepting the task, and James arrives to find ‘The Queen’ is in fact a dirty old coal barge. Determined not to let Gordon out-smart him (as well as to stay clean), James confidently pushes the barge to the repair yard on a well wagon, chanting ‘Shiny and clean, shiny and clean!’. After narrowly avoiding dirty obstacles, James completes the task and returns home to celebrate his victory, only to be sprayed with dirt and dust from Percy’s whistle moments later. Nothing they do can persuade him to have fun, which provokes Thomas to play a trick on innocent Arthur. He persuades Arthur to take a train of fruit to market and warns him to discipline the trucks, knowing that they will give him a hard time. Arthur has trouble controlling the noisy trucks, which eventually drag him down a hill and straight into the back of Duck’s goods train at the crossing. But it is when he tells Thomas that the Fat Controller is planning to scrap all steam engines that Thomas starts to worry. The little tank engine has trouble sleeping because of it. The next morning, new fuel arrives for Diesel and Mavis. But unfortunately, water has leaked into the tanks, and they're soon out of action, as are all of the other diesels on the Island. Thomas is sent to collect fresh diesel fuel from the docks. He travels all around the island, delivering fresh fuel for all the diesels. When he arrives at the quarry, the two diesels are very grateful, and work soon continues as normal, and the important order is finally filled. Later, the Fat Controller arrives with Percy, and tells Thomas he's a 'really useful engine'. And even Diesel agrees! File:TTTepno183.png Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon

And by chance, Gordon is sent to the works, and Henry is asked to pull the express in his place. Henry is excited, but soon learns that pulling passengers is a lot different from pulling freight, and before long (especially after an incident with the dining car), he is wanting to return to pulling freight. He stops in the forest, whilst pulling the express, to wish that he could go back to pulling freight. The Fat Controller arrives, and tells him off, and that Gordon is due back tomorrow. When he realises, he heads back to look for him, but the Tuba Player has already gone looking for a way to get there, first catching a lift with Bertie the Bus, then Elizabeth, then Trevor. Thomas is so busy looking for the tuba player that he doesn't hear the tuba player playing his tuba when he passes him on his travels several times. He is so busy looking that he doesn't notice Percy coming towards him on the same line, pushing trucks full of bunting. Thomas hits the trucks, sending the bunting everywhere. When Harvey re-rails Thomas, he tells him to look and listen. When Thomas applies this new theory, he soon hears the sound of a tuba, and soon finds the tuba player with Trevor. Once on board, Thomas races to the station, the player makes it in time for the party, and everyone enjoys the music. File:TTTepno185.png Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon
Squeak, Rattle and Roll Diesel tells Gordon that when the Fat Controller realizes how 'clapped out' steam engines are, they'll all be scrapped. Gordon dismisses this and puffs away. But as he puffs along, he hears a squeaking sound coming from his pistons. But he also realizes that the sound seems to disappear when he goes slowly, so he puffs slowly along so no one can hear his squeak. That night, the Fat Controller tells him that tomorrow, he has to take some children to the docks, but he has to go fast so that they don't miss the boat. Gordon is faced with a dilemma; if he goes slowly, the children will miss the boat, but if he goes fast, the Fat Controller will hear his funny noises and might send him to the scrap yard. Gordon sets off slowly, but the Fat Controller scolds him. But when he reminds him that he's the fastest engine on Sodor, Gordon's confidence is boosted, and he decides that he'll get the children to his boat on time, even if it's his last trip. He arrives at the docks, squeaking and rattling and knocking, but right on time. The children congratulate Gordon, and the Fat Controller asks Gordon why he hasn't been to the repair yard about his noises. Gordon tells the Fat Controller he thought he'd be scrapped, but the Fat Controller assures him he'd never do that; who else would pull the express? So the next day, Gordon's joints are oiled and tightened, and he is soon back to work as normal, feeling happier than ever! File:TTTepno186.png Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon

One day, when 'Arry and Bert frighten Percy with their loud horns, he sets out to try and outdo them. After practicing loud whistling, he returns to the quarry, and blasts his whistle very loud, frightening the two diesels. Percy is very pleased, and goes around the island showing off his loud whistle. However, it causes trouble; Thomas is so startled that he bumps his trucks, and Bertie ends up skidding off the road. That night, Thomas tells Percy off, but the next day, Percy, believing no one's around, decides to have another 'loud whistle'. However, he is unaware that Trevor is on a nearby hill, delivering hay and logs to the farm. When Percy whistles, Trevor is so startled that he bumps one of the logs, which rolls down the hill. Snow sticks to it, and it soon forms a giant snowball, which rolls right into Percy. Soon the Fat Controller arrives, and spoke to Percy to use his whistle for safely. Percy agreed to use his whistle for the right time from now on. The next morning, as Percy puffs out of a tunnel, he sees a snowdrift has come right across the line. Then, he hears Thomas's whistle; he's heading straight for it. Percy decides theirs only one way to warn him, and with the deepest breath, he takes the biggest longest loudest whistle he's ever taken. Thomas slows down, and just avoids hitting the snowdrift. That night, Sir Topham Hatt congratulates Percy for being a really useful and safe engine. Percy is very proud, and now uses his whistle safely. File:TTTepno187.png Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon

Thomas is cross when James gets to collect the fireworks for this years display; he wanted to bring them to see the happy children. James is very excited to be collecting them. He soon collects them and is on his way, but suddenly, he breaks down, and his driver goes for help. At Knapford, the Fat Controller tells Thomas that he must help James or the display will be cancelled. It's dark when Thomas arrives, and he teases James, and in turn, he refuses to move. But when Thomas tells him that the children will be disappointed, James decides to help Thomas out after all, keeping a good look out for him. Soon they arrive at a red signal, and realize that the Fat Controller must've cancelled the display, and Gordon must be bringing the children back; and they're right! Suddenly, Thomas has an idea; launch a firework to let them know they're coming. His driver does so, and when the Fat Controller sees it, he tells Gordon to stop; the display is back on. As the signal turns green, Thomas and James steam happily into Knapford to a chorus of cheers from the children. The two engines then watch the display from the sheds, and decide that they are most useful when they work together. File:TTTepno188.png Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon
Too Hot for Thomas It's summertime, and James and Toby are taking children to the seaside. Thomas however, has to deliver some raspberry syrup to the ice cream factory. However, when he arrives, the manager tells him that the beach stall has run out of ice cream, and need him to fetch ingredients to make more. His driver reminds him that the quicker they help, the quicker they can be finished and take some children to the seaside. Thomas quickly collects the cream, then the strawberries. He puffs quickly to the chocolate factory, but he puffs so fast that the signalman didn't get time to change the points, and he is diverted onto a siding. Then he has to wait for Toby to go past before he can get back to work. When Thomas arrives at the chocolate factory, he doesn't realize that one of the freight cars brakes are on, so when he pulls hard, the coupling breaks, and cocoa powder is sent everywhere. Fortunately, the mess is soon cleared, and Thomas is on his way again. He finally arrives back at the ice cream factory, and has to wait for the ice cream to be made. When it is, he puffs to the seaside. It is now far too late to take the children, but when he arrives at the beach, he sees that the children and the Fat Controller are very pleased with him; they had been waiting for the fresh ice cream. This makes Thomas feel very happy. File:TTTepno188.png Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon
Emily's Adventure A summer storm rages across the island, and causes lots of damage, including blowing the roof right off Farmer McColls barn. He worries that his calfs will get cold, so he telephones the Fat Controller for help. He asks Emily to take some timber to the barn for a new roof. On Emily's journey, she has to stop and wait for Trevor to move a fallen tree from the line. Trevor struggles with the heavy load, and Emily impatiently whistles and tells him to hurry up. When she does, Trevor works faster, and as soon as the line is clear, she puffs away without saying 'thank you'. Emily applies this strategy throughout the day to get everyone to hurry up. However, when she tries to get Elizabeth to hurry with moving a fallen water tower, Elizabeth is offended, and purposely stops trying. Later, when Thomas arrives, Emily tells him that Elizabeth isn't doing what she's telling her to do. Thomas suggests that she ask nicely. Emily reluctantly does so, and Elizabeth suddenly starts working again, and as soon as the line is clear, Emily says 'thank you' and continues on with her journey. And for the rest of the day, she is polite to everyone she passes. She soon arrives at Farmer McColls, and by nightfall, the roof is mended and the calves are safely back in their barn. Farmer McColl is very pleased, and Emily now realizes that asking nicely gets things done much quicker! Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon
You Can Do It, Toby! Toby is not as strong as the other engines. One day, whilst he struggles up Gordon's Hill with some milk, Gordon, who is being pushed up the hill by Edward, passes him, and tells Toby that he's not a proper steam engine. This makes Toby feel very sad. That night, the Fat Controller tells Toby that tomorrow, he has to stand in for Edward at Wellsworth. Toby worries that he'll not be good enough, especially when he arrives and sees the huge amount of trucks that need shunting. But with Thomas's encouragement, Toby soon has the trucks shunted into place. But soon, he hears that Gordon needs a back engine to push him up the hill. Toby doubts he'll be able to push Gordon, but Thomas assures him that he can do it. Gordon is cross when he hears that Toby will be helping him. When Toby arrives, he is unable to get the train moving, and Gordon tells him they should have sent a proper engine. Toby is about to give up and head back when he remembers Thomas's words of encouragement, and with a huge effort, he manages to get the train moving, and before long, Gordon and the express are over the other side of the hill. And that night, the Fat Controller comes to Toby's shed, and congratulates him for being a really useful engine. This makes Toby feel very proud. File:TTTepno190.png Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon
Edward the Great The Duke and Duchess of Boxford have returned to Sodor to visit their summer house, and have brought Spencer the sliver engine with them. The other engines want to take their furniture, to give them a chance to race Spencer, but the Fat Controller chooses Edward for that job. Gordon and James are cross; they know Edward will lose and let the railway down. Edward sets off with the furniture, but in a few seconds, Spencer overtakes him and is far in front. Fortunately, Spencer stops at Wellsworth so the Duke and Duchess can have refreshments, so Edward gets a chance to catch up. As Edward steams through the station, the workmen cheer him on. But once the Duke and Duchess are back on board, Spencer soon overtakes Edward again. Further up the line, Spencer stops so the Duke can take pictures of the countryside. Spencer decides to sleep; he's too far in front to worry! Gordon soon passes Spencer, but not much further up the line, he passes Edward. Amazed at Edward's efforts, he cheers him on. This boosts Edwards confidence, and he picks up speed. He soon passes Spencer. The Duke and Duchess then get back on board, but Spencer doesn't wake up. When his driver manages to wake him up, he sees Edward ahead of him, and sets off as fast as he can. But it is too late; the tracks to the house are old, so the driver slows him down. Spencer is embarrassed; he knows he's lost. Meanwhile, Edward steams triumphantly to the summer house. He is indeed the pride of the railway! File:TTTepno191.png Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon
James Goes Too Far James feels that every other engines have more important jobs to do than him, and he wants to be a really important engine. That afternoon, the Fat Controller gives him a very important job; delivering coal to all the stations on the island. However, the importance makes James puffed up in his smokebox; he doesn't wait to take on water, and when Edward asks for help with his jobs, James tells him he can't, as his job is far too important. James soon arrives at the coaling plant and sets off with the trucks. But before long, he comes to a complete stop; he's run out of water! Edward passes, but he can't help; because James didn't help him, he's running late with his passenger train. However, Edward does warn the signalman, who sends Salty to help James. Salty is cross with James for not helping Edward. James tells him that he had too important a job, but Salty reminds him that no job is more important than helping another engine. Soon, James is on his way again, but up ahead, he sees Diesel, who has broken down. Remembering Salty's words, he decides to help Diesel, and pushes him to the works. James then continues on with his own job, and delivers the coal, keeping the passengers nice and warm. And the next morning, the Fat Controller congratulates James on learning his lesson and being really useful. James now knows that being really useful is better than being important! 193 Percy and the Magic Carpet The annual Sodor Flower Show, and Alicia Botti is coming to open it. Percy is sent to collect a special load from the docks. While he is very pleased, he is disappointed when he sees that his load is nothing more than a roll of carpet. Salty suggests that the carpet could be a magic carpet. The carpet isn't tied down properly, so as Percy puffs away, it unrolls, puzzling the little green engine. When Percy comes across Gordon at a junction, the wind blows the carpet into the air. Percy tells Gordon the carpet must be magic, but Gordon crossly tells him that magic carpets don't exist. The carpet lands down on a truck on Murdochs goods train, and Percy chases after him. Murdoch doesn't stop, and neither does the carpet; it blows off Murdoch's freight cars and onto Toby's roof. Percy chases after Toby, but he doesn't stop either. When Toby arrives at the station, the carpet blows onto one of the tracks. Suddenly, the engines hear Thomas's whistle; he's coming along the track that the carpet is on! The engines whistle to warn him, but Thomas is unable to stop in time. But suddenly, a gust of wind blows the carpet clear just in time, and back onto Percy's goods train, much to Gordon's amazement. The carpet is then tied down and Percy finishes his journey. When he arrives, the Fat Controller assures him that magic carpets don't exist, but congratulates Percy on being really useful. Gordon soon arrives with Alicia Botti, and the flower show proves a great success. But despite Sir Topham Hatt's words, Percy and Gordon are still unsure whether magic carpets exist or not. 194 Gordon Takes Charge It's winter, and the roads are often blocked. Because of this, the Fat Controller schedules extra passenger trains, and asks Percy to pull some of them. Percy is worried, having not pulled passengers in a while, but the Fat Controller tells him that Gordon will teach him how to pull them. Gordon is cross, but when the yard manager praises him on his excellent buffering up to the coaches, Gordon decides it might be fun teaching Percy. As the day progresses, Gordon enjoys showing Percy what to do, but Percy is getting cross; he thinks Gordon's just showing off. Gordon is indeed showing off; he soon starts trying to find other engines to show how smoothly he puffs. As he approaches the station, he is so busy showing the passengers on the platform how smoothly he puffs that he doesn't notice the icy rails. Gordon slides straight through the station and into a siding, ending in a bank of snow. His passengers have to walk through the snow, and The Fat Controller is cross, and Gordon gets very embarrassed when Percy puffs smoothly into the station, with his passengers getting out at the platform. Edward soon arrives to pull Gordon out. But that evening, Gordon learns his lesson, and asks Percy to go first, and show him how smoothly he puffs. Percy does so, and the two engines puff happily along. Back at the sheds, Gordon congratulates Percy on a good job. But of course, he also compliments himself on being a good teacher! 195 James Gets a New Coat James becomes heavily conceited when he is given a new coat of paint. But he feels so ‘above himself’ that when given the task of helping Percy bring some coal trucks down to the harbour, he spends more time looking at his reflection in the canal that he forgets about the delivery. James then decides to find passengers and engines to show his new coat of paint too. Meanwhile, Percy struggles on without James's help, but the huge amount of trucks, not to mention that they're feeling very troublesome today, makes it very hard, and the Yard Manager is furious. After showing his coat of paint, James then heads to the coaling plant, and to make up for lost time, James has to take an extra load of coal trucks to the docks. James is thrilled; there'll be lots of people to see his coat there. Percy warns him that the Troublesome Trucks will be naughty, but James doesn't listen. As James puffs along, the trucks bump and bash each other, and coal dust is sent all over James. When James brakes hard when the trucks drag him down Gordon's Hill, more coal dust flies on him, and when he bumps them, even more dust covers him. It is only now that he starts being seen; Edward, Emily and Thomas pass him. And when he arrives at the docks, Gordon and his passengers are amazed at how filthy he is. James is now in a much less presentable state. However, despite feeling very foolish, he can't help but laugh. File:TTTepno195.png Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon
Thomas Saves the Day A new station is being built and every morning, Thomas has to take the workmen to the building site, and bring them home. On the way, there is a difficult bend which he has to go around. He doesn't like it, but with Annie and Clarabel's guidance ('slow down and puff with care') he always makes it round the bend. But one day, Sir Topham Hatt tells him that Annie and Clarabel are to be sent for a re-fit, and he must use other coaches. Thomas is very sad. When he goes to pick the workmen up and take them home, he forgets Annie and Clarabel's advice and goes fast to get around the bend quickly, and he ends up coming off the rails. Harvey soon has him back on the rails, but he feels very bad. As Thomas puffs home, a train of runaway trucks goes straight past him on the other line. They're heading straight for the new station, so Thomas chases after them. He soon overtakes them, but the difficult bend is near. When he arrives, he suddenly remembers Annie and Clarabel's advice, so he slows down, and makes it round safely. He then speeds up, and warns the signalman of the runaway trucks. The trucks are diverted into a siding, and crash into the buffers, but the new station is safe. The next day, Thomas puffs to the Grand Opening of the new station with Annie and Clarabel. As he approaches the difficult bend, he remembers to slow down; it's not difficult any more. 197 Percy's Big Mistake Percy has a busy schedule to uphold, and one day, when he arrives late at the Docks, the manager goes to have a word with the Fat Controller. Back at the sheds, Percy overhears them, and he hears the Fat Controller say that he'll send Percy to the Scrap yard. The little green engine is very worried. The next morning, Thomas assures him the Fat Controller would never do such a thing, but to make sure, Percy decides to work extra hard. Unfortunately, Cranky is deliberately slow in loading some pipes, and when they're done, Percy is in such a hurry that they're not tied down properly, and fall off. Later, Percy has to deliver some tar barrels, but goes so fast that he loses control when going down the hill. He ends up being diverted onto the other line, where up ahead, Gordon is waiting at a signal. The trucks crash into him, and Gordon is covered in tar. Percy decides this is one mistake too many and runs away. Later, the Fat Controller arrives, wanting to speak to Percy. Thomas tells him that he overheard him talking last night, so the Fat Controller sets everyone out to look for Percy. No one can find him, but then Thomas has an idea; Tidmouth Sheds. He is indeed right; Percy is hiding there. The Fat Controller then assures him that he wasn't going to scrap him; he wanted him to take some trucks to the scrap yard. before being put on mail duty for a week; Percy's favorite job! The next morning, Thomas has to leave early to deliver trucks from the quarry to the docks. But later, the Fat Controller arrives to tell the engines that they need to have their snowploughs fitted; a heavy fall is on the way. He tells Emily to go and tell Thomas that he wants him to have his snow plough fitted. As soon as Emily's plough is fitted, she goes to find Thomas. She tells Thomas he must wear his snow plough, but Thomas just thinks she's being bossy, so ignores her and steams off. Later, the heavy snow fall arrives, and Thomas can't get through. His driver goes for help, and soon Emily arrives. Emily is cross with him, and he is cross at her too. Emily takes Thomas back to Tidmouth Sheds, where the Fat Controller tells him off for not listening to him. Thomas didn't know that the Fat Controller had wanted him to have the plough fitted, and feels bad. Emily feels bad for not telling him that, and she owns up. 199 Don't Tell Thomas It's winter time, and Thomas has been working hard to clear the lines of snow. The other engines have been grateful of Thomas's help, and as Christmas is approaching, they decide to thank Thomas for his hard work. One day, as Thomas arrives at the station, he hears Harold whisper to Toby, 'Don't Tell Thomas about the surprise.' They both leave before Thomas can ask, and he feels left out. Later, he comes across Percy with trucks full of presents, but he leaves too so that he doesn't spoil the surprise. He then comes across Emily with a load covered up by a tarpaulin (a tree), and when she puffs off, Thomas quietly follows her, but she is diverted onto a different line, so he has to go straight ahead. Later, Thomas overhears the engines talking at the sheds, and they stop just as he arrives. Thomas, feeling very left out, decides he doesn't want to know, so steams away. At last, the surprise is ready, but no one can find Thomas. At last, Harold finds him in a siding, and he tells Thomas that the surprise is ready, and they weren't leaving him out. 200 Emily's New Route Emily is very excited when she is given the flour mill run. James, meanwhile, has been given the Black Loch run; there's boulders on the tracks, and a monster supposedly resides in the lake. When he tells Emily about it, she's glad she's not doing the Black Loch run. On her first flour run, the trucks hold her back, making her late, and angering the Fat Controller, who tells her she'll do the Black Loch Run if she's late again. But the next day, she leaves too soon, and only takes half the flour. When she realizes, she heads back to the flour mill. But the trucks tease her, and she is so cross that she bumps them too hard, sending them into a muddy ditch, and sending flour everywhere. That night, the Fat Controller tells Emily that now, she'll take over the Black Loch run. Emily is scared, but Thomas tells her it might not be that bad. The next morning, Emily sets off with her passengers. She is soon going well, but when she arrives, a rockslide occurs in front of her, and she has to wait. Whilst she is waiting, she sees something moving in the water. Emily is frightened, and is about to steam back when she remembers the passengers; she can't let them down. Suddenly, the water settles, and Emily sees what was moving in the water; a family of seals. She is very relieved. Soon the line is clear, and she continues her journey. But that night, she returns to Black Loch with Thomas to see the seals; the route isn't so bad after all! File:TTTepno200.png Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon
Spic and Span The Railway Inspector is paying a visit to the Island, and the Fat Controller tells the engines that he's going to give a rosette to the cleanest engine. Gordon, James and Emily are certain that they're going to win, but Thomas assures Percy that a really useful engine can look as grand as any engine. Later, at the quarry, stone pours from the chute all over Thomas. He puffs to the washdown, but Emily is already there being cleaned, so he goes back to work. When Thomas and Percy arrive at the docks, Thomas sees the railway inspector, and steams away to get cleaned before he sees him. However, James is at the washdown now, so Thomas steams back to work. After shunting all the trucks, both Percy and Thomas are very dirty, so they head to the washdown, only to see Gordon has just been cleaned. When James and Emily arrive, Thomas admits defeat; they'll never look as grand as the big engines, so they may as well not go to the inspection. However, Percy assures him otherwise, and they go to get cleaned. Meanwhile, at the coaling plant, the big engines are waiting for the inspector when James knocks a truck into a lever. Suddenly, coal pours out from the chute, sending a huge cloud of coal dust over the big engines. Just then, the inspector arrives, amazed at how dirty the engines are. But when Thomas and Percy arrive, shiny and clean, the inspectors mood improves, and he awards the rosettes to them. As Thomas said, a really useful engine can look as grand as any engine! 202 Thomas and the Circus The circus is coming to Sodor, and the Fat Controller chooses Thomas to pull the circus train, but to share the load if it's too heavy for him. Thomas arrives at the docks, and is amazed to see how great the train looks. It takes a huge effort to get the train moving, but the sound of the band playing and everyone cheering makes Thomas think this is the most wonderful special ever. He is soon making good progress, but is having so much fun that he tells Percy he doesn't need any help to keep the train to himself, which saddens Percy. Soon, Thomas starts to struggle, but he still wants to keep the train to himself, so tells James he doesn't need help. But soon, the strain is too much and Thomas's side rods break. Thomas feels bad for not sharing the load, and when Percy and James arrive with new traction rods (and hay for the horses), Thomas apologises for not sharing earlier, but they don't mind; now they can all share. And so the train is divided into three, and the engines continue the journey to the showground. As they watch the big tent being put up, Thomas decides that sharing the load is the best fun of all! 203 Thomas Gets It Right After a storm, the engines are all asked to help with the clean up. They all want to be really useful and see who can make the most deliveries. Thomas is sent to meet Farmer McColl at Maron station. He has several eggs which need delivering around the island. However, Farmer McColl wants to make sure his eggs are delivered safely, so he decides to travel in Thomas's cab to make sure he goes slow and steady. Thomas is sad; he wants to go fast and get as many deliveries done as possible. When he stops at Maithwaite station to deliver some eggs, he sees James, who has just made his third delivery, and boasts about it, making Thomas sad. He soon comes across Toby, who has also made more deliveries than him. Thomas decides to try and be fast and careful, but he isn't being careful at all, and some eggs fall and break. Farmer McColl orders him to stop; he is very cross, and Thomas now feels bad. Fortunately, only a few eggs are broken, and Thomas continues his journey very slowly. He realizes that going slow can be just as important as going fast. That night, the Fat Controller congratulates the engines on their splendid efforts. Thomas tells him he only made one delivery and broke some eggs, but the Fat Controller doesn't mind; most eggs were delivered safely, and he ate the broken ones for tea! 204 As Good as Gordon Gordon is to take the new Mayor of Sodor on a tour of the island, and Emily will take his express for him. Gordon boasts that she'll never be as fast as him; he can make it across the island 'twice by teatime.' Emily sets out determined to be as good as Gordon. When she arrives at Knapford, she pulls away too soon, and leaves the brake coach behind. Emily makes it across the island once in good time, but it's the return journey that causes problems. First, she has to wait for Edward at a crossing, and she whistles impatiently for him to go faster. Then at Maithwaite, she has to wait for Bertie, but he's running late due to a delay with a flat tire. Emily knows she has to be as good as Gordon, so decides to go on, but just as she leaves, Bertie arrives. Next, she has to take on water, but as James is at the water tower, she orders him to move. James tells her to wait her turn, but Emily feels too important to wait, so she continues on. However, as she approaches the Docks (her last stop), she comes to a complete stop; she's run out of water. The Fat Controller arrives on James, and tells her that she must learn to be more patient. James takes the express the rest of the way, so the Fat Controller needs to find an engine to take the slow goods in his place. Emily volunteers, and the Fat Controller agrees. So once she fills up with water and coal, she collects the goods train, and this time, she shows much more patience. File:TTTepno204.png Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon
Fish The fishermen are celebrating their biggest catch of fish ever, and Thomas is sent to the fishing village to help Arthur take the fish trucks to the docks. Thomas isn't pleased; he really dislikes fish. When he arrives, Arthur warns Thomas that the route they are taking is old and bumpy, so he must go slowly and only take five trucks at a time. But Thomas wants to get this smelly job over and done with, so he takes all the trucks at once. But when he reaches the top of Gordon's Hill, the heavy trucks drag him down the other side, and they crash into Salty (who's waiting at a signal), sending fish everywhere. Harvey arrives to clear the mess, and the Fat Controller tells Thomas that he must take more care in future. So once the tracks are clear, Thomas collects five trucks, and steams off with them. As there's less trucks, Thomas manages to have better control of them, and they cause less trouble for him. After several trips, Thomas manages to deliver all of the fish just before the ship leaves. The Fat Controller praises Thomas for his efforts, but Thomas has somewhere he has to go...the washdown to hose the smell of fish off his boiler! Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon
Halloween The engines always like Halloween; they love seeing the children in their Halloween costumes, and hearing ghostly tales of ghost engines that haunts the scrapyards and the smelters and conquer Sodor. However, as night approaches, The Fat Controller asks Thomas and Emily to collect some iron from the smelters and watch out for ghosts. Percy worries for his friends and remember the times that Thomas did get scared, as the smelters is a very scary place, but Thomas and Emily aren't worried, and they puff confidently on their way. But when they approach the smelters yard, smoke swirls around the scrap iron outside, making everything look very spooky. 'Arry and Bert don't make things easier for the two engines; they make ghostly sounds, and bump trucks to frighten them. Thomas and Emily puff bravely into the smelter shed. Whilst being turned around on a turntable, Emily didn't notice a huge white tarpaulin, it fell on covering her from funnel to footplate. Believing that the Ghost Engine has got her, Emily was so scared that she puffs as fast as her pistons can pump. And when Thomas, 'Arry and Bert see her, they think she is the Ghost Engine, and race away too. The engines all race the way to Tidmouth Sheds, and as they arrive, the wind blows the tarpaulin off Emily and onto the tracks. The engines didn't feel scared anymore but they did feel foolish, and even more so when The Fat Controller arrives. However, 'Arry and Bert own up to the tricks they played, and The Fat Controller crossly sends them back to the smelters to collect the iron. When Thomas and Emily go back, they realize that there's nothing to be scared of; ghosts are just silly and make believe! File:TTTepno206.png Michael Angelis, Michael Brandon

But when the Fat Controller arrives with three jobs to do, Thomas wants to be useful, and volunteers. The jobs are to take sheep to the farm, chickens to the market, and children to the school. However, Thomas foolishly takes Gordon's advice that 'really useful engines don't need help!' He collects all three trains, but his lack of sleep starts to catch up on him. However, he still doesn't accept help, and ends up in a great muddle; he delivers the sheep to the market (where they eat the vegetables), children to the farm (where they dirty their uniforms), and chickens to the school (where they cause great chaos)! Thomas arrives back at the sheds, looking forward to his rest, when the Fat Controller arrives and tells him of the muddle he's caused. Thomas feels bad, but the Fat Controller tells him that he can sort the mess out with some help from his friends. Thomas tells him about what Gordon had said, but Edward points out that he's always helping Gordon, making Gordon very embarrassed. Soon, Thomas, Edward and Percy have the right trains delivered to the right places, and that night, when Thomas finally gets some much needed sleep, he dreams of chickens, sheep and children! Hiding the fact that he is not feeling well, he claims that he delivered the apples on his own. The same happens when he needs Duncan's help while taking some sheep. Sir Handel is doing a good job of keeping his secret, but soon he has to take Mr. and Mrs. Percival on a picnic at the top of a mountain. Once he again, he rattles and rocks, and, at first, Mr. Percival wants to send him back to the stone quarry, the place for bumpy engines. Finally, Duncan hits a very bumpy spot. The bell tumbles down the hill. Duncan thinks the bell is gone forever until he hears a faint chime in the background...it's the bell! He eventually finds it hanging from the branch of a tree, and rolls underneath just in time to catch it. He has trouble getting to the top of the mountain, being as old as he is. He eventually arrives and they begin the race. Freddie starts to fall short of steam, and is determined not to lose. He remembers an old track that's shorter, so he cheats by using it. Skarloey and Rheneas are impressed, and want to race him again. They do so, and again Freddie cheats. Meanwhile, Rheneas and Skarloey get too excited, and Rheneas flies off the track and down the mountain! Skarloey informs Freddie.
