FYI: This job has been advertised for the past 3 years, without hiring a faculty member. It's unclear whether the position has not been filled for lack of funding or for other reasons.
According to last year's wiki, the offer was rejected (no reason specified). I can say with great confidence that this is a solid, line and that we hope to hire a very strong medieval candidate this year. Two years ago, our hire withdrew at the very last moment (shortly before she was due to start the semester). Last year, our favorite also withdrew in February! Two different stories having to do with personal circumstances. The funding is there, folks.
Update: MLA interviews are being scheduled today, Wednesday, December 12.

University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

MLA interview scheduled Dec. 10
How is this possible? They explicitly said they weren't interviewing at MLA, and they are notorious for not doing MLA interviews.
A: I don't know what to tell you. It seems that they're going to MLA after all.
A: Yep. They've scheduled MLA interviews for the Postcolonial position as well. Seems they are doing things differently this year. They also "explicity" DID NOT say they wanted writing samples and then changed their minds about that as well.
A: Exactly--in fact, they emailed me on November 30 stating "the search committee forgot to ask for samples, but we need one--and remember the deadline is December 1." Pretty rude, I thought.
Very kind (and prompt) post-MLA rejection, Dec. 29.

A: I had no problems getting in touch with anyone.

E-mail rec'd stating that they were in the process of making arrangements for 1st-round campus interviews: Jan 8 (3)

Q: Has anyone received an invitation for an on-campus visit?
A: I haven't. I notice there's a new search committee chair now. Anyone know what happened?
A: I think he's always been the chair of the search committee. The contact person in the advertisement is the chair of the department.
Q: Still no invites for on-campus visits?
A: Nope. Could it be that the invitees don't check the Wiki?
Or, they could be savvy enough not to post.
A: Or, they could be busy--campus interview scheduled Jan 8.
