Mississippi is bordered on the north by Tennessee, the east by Alabama, the west by Louisiana, and the south by Louisiana and a narrow strip of the Gulf of Mexico. The Mississippi river runs on the west border of Mississippi. Major rivers in Mississippi include Big Black River, the Pearl River, the Yazoo, the Pascagoula, and the Tombigbee. Major lakes include Ross Barnett Reservoir, Arkabutla Lake, Sardis Lake and Grenada Lake.
Mississippi is usually very hot and humid, with long summers and short generally mild winters. Mississippi is occasionally threatened by hurricanes, most notably Hurricane Katrina that hit in 2005.
