[edit] ABALTAT
Abaltat Products Featured at NAB2007
a) Abaltat Muse - Available March 2007 Abaltat Muse™ is the world's first video-driven soundtrack composer. It can be purchased as a download from the Abaltat Web site.
Representing a fundamental departure from traditional post-production tools, Abaltat Muse is the first post-production software to exploit artificial intelligence by measuring different selected elements in a moving picture and composing music to them.
Abaltat Muse is designed specifically for video editors. It uses a combination of picture windows, timelines, and keyframes to compose music, requiring a video editor's skills to create music, not a musician's. Abaltat Muse actually writes the music to the picture, attune to having a band in the user's computer dedicated to the editing process. Abaltat Muse composes the music and plays out using a MIDI sampler and virtual instruments. Consequently there are no limits on the audio quality of the outputs that can be in AIFF or WAV formats, or even as a MIDI file, should the editor require a musician to do more work on his or her composition.
b) Abaltat Band™ - Available March 2007
Abaltat Band™ is a suite of "bands" that works as a plug-in with the Abaltat Muse application. Users can download the application from Abaltat's Web site.
Users can choose the composition style from one of several genres that each include selected virtual instruments. The genres vary from rhythm and blues to "Atmospheric." Albatat Band's compositions are based on musical arrangements and are not preprogrammed. Users can radically modify the compositions on the timeline as changes in scales, instruments, and mixes are all controlled by keyframes.
Abaltat Band is designed as a 21st century musical instrument with video editing workflow parameters that can sound like a band, a string quartet, or an electronic composer, and in which every case, does what it is told by the editor. The application carries no prior royalties on the music it creates.
c) Abaltat Beat™ – Available Feb. 2007
Abaltat Beat™ is designed to solve one of the creative problems of music and picture — it allows the editor to cut pictures first and then find a best-fit beats-per-minute (BPM) by analyzing the Edit Decision List (EDL). Abaltat Beat suggests a series of possible fits by a comparative analysis of beats-per-minute and the edited rate of the picture.
This BPM can be played back in sync with the picture using a series of drum patterns included in Abaltat Beat. The time signature of the drum patterns can be adjusted, for example from 3/4 to 4/4, allowing for a complete recalculation of the drum track, (i.e., how a waltz would fit the cut rather than an R&B track).
Abaltat Beat can export a midi file so that the project can be easily sent on to a musician for further composition work. It can also be sent as a QuickTime® file with the audio in sync to the picture. Since the time is expressed in BPM, it is also possible to search music libraries using the BPM.
All BPM selections work seamlessly with the soon-to-be released Abaltat Muse.

New FA-9100 offers optional HD/SD up/down/cross conversion, aspect ratio and IP conversion, HDV/DV encoder/decoder, and Dolby E encoder/decoder
FOR-A Corporation of America will introduce the FA-9100 HD/SD, its newest FA Series model of super signal processor, at NAB 2007 in Las Vegas, from April 14-19, 2007 (Booth #C4234). The FA-9100 is a more advanced version of the FA-9000. Customers can now choose between the FA-9000 and the FA-9100 depending upon the type of processing required.
“The FA-9100 represents the culmination of FOR-A’s 35 years of signal processing innovations. Like the award-winning FA-9000, the new FA-9100 is an affordable HD-based super signal processor with functionality that goes way beyond a typical frame synchronizer and converter. The FA-9100 offers several options, including HDV/DV stream conversion, Dolby E encoder/decoder, and HD/SD up/down and cross conversion. With the installation of an optional redundant power supply, the FA-9100’s operation is improved due to failsafe redundancy,” said Mr. Susumu Hotta, President, FOR-A Corporation of America. “With this expanded feature set, the FA-9100 is truly an all-in-one super signal processor suited to the challenges of today’s multi-format DTV broadcast environment.”
The new FA-9100 has optional cross conversion between 1080i and 720p HD formats as well as HD/SD up and down conversion. The FA-9100 also offers freely adjustable aspect ratio conversion and cross conversion between 1080i and 720p HD formats.
The FA-9100 has an optional Dolby E encoder/decoder. Only the Dolby E decoder option had been available on the model FA-9000. Dolby E, a surround sound distribution system developed by Dolby Laboratories, is becoming increasingly common in the broadcast production pipeline. The FA-9100 can decode Dolby E signals that were input from an external encoder or encode internal audio signals into Dolby E for output. Audio signal processing is based on a high-accuracy sampling rate converter, providing a full range of signal conversion functions, including channel swap, level adjustment, mux/demux, and delay.
Other enhancements to the FA-9100 include a powerful video delay circuit that can delay video by up to four frames. This video delay can be useful in a variety of applications including the signal timing involved in FOR-A’s virtual studio systems. This video delay is also useful for applications such as introducing delay to adjust for Dolby E signals.
The FA-9100 also offers an optional color corrector that integrates technology from the FOR-A DCC color corrector series - the broadcast industry standard. This technology enables many different types of color correction, gamma correction, clip functions, and other adjustments.
The FA-9100 offers an optional HDV/DV encoder/decoder for decoding DV or HDV streams from an IEEE1394 terminal and for encoding various baseband signals into HDV/DV formats.
The signal processor supports scramble connections to allow multiple remote control units to communicate with multiple main units. Customers may also choose an optional 3D comb filter for use during analog composite signal conversions.
The FA-9100 will be available for delivery at the end of July 2007.

FOR-A TO INTRODUCE ENHANCED FEATURES ON FRC-7000 HD FRAME RATE CONVERTER AT NAB 2007
FOR-A Corporation of America will introduce expanded optional capabilities for its FRC-7000 HD frame rate converter at NAB 2007 (Booth #C4234).
When the FRC-7000 debuted last year, it could convert between 1080/59.94i and 1080/50i, and between 720/59.94p and 720/50p HD frame rates in real time. However, at NAB 2007, FOR-A will unveil new enhanced features including advanced scene cut detection and roll/crawl text detection. Later this year, FOR-A will also offer optional support for different frame rates including 23.98psf, 23.98p, 24psf, 24p, 30p, 30psf, 29.97psf, 29p, 25p and 25psf.
“After its NAB 2006 debut, our FRC-7000 met with very enthusiastic and positive response, and it’s now being used by broadcasters, production companies, and satellite uplink facilities around the world that want high-quality HD frame rate conversion. Considering the proliferation of HD formats worldwide, we believe we will continue to see strong demand for this high-quality HD frame rate converter because it is capable of converting accurately between all the leading HD formats in use today,” said Andrew Alexander, Vice President, FOR-A Corporation of Canada.
“Currently, there are very few purely HD-based frame rate converters in the marketplace. The high-quality frame rate conversion that the FRC-7000 achieves stems from FOR-A’s over 35 year history of signal processing innovations and our use of advanced Vector Motion algorithms,” Alexander added.
The FRC-7000 with enhanced optional features is ideal for many applications, including converting the frame rate prior to transmitting the international feed of a major sporting event, and for converting filmed content for HDTV broadcast.
FOR-A predicts a bright sales future for this product. “We have been selling a lot of units to clients who convert between the European 50 frame standards and the North American 60 frame standard,” Alexander said. “However we feel the biggest market will be converting from the 23.98 production standard to the 60 frame broadcast standards and we expect to be the first to do this with advanced vector motion processing.”
The FRC-7000 uses vector motion compensation processing to analyze and determine the pixel movement in each image frame. This is accomplished by comparing the movement in the frames before and after the ones being converted.
The FRC-7000’s advanced scene cut detection automatically detects scene changes and turns off motion compensation processing so as to not affect the scenes before and after the frames being converted. A complete, new set of frames is then created in the required output standard.
“This function has such a high degree of accuracy that it automatically recognizes similar scene cuts involving the same subject or similar visual content,” said Alexander. “The result is frame rate conversion with minimal judder or artefacts.”
The FRC-7000 supports eight-channel 48 kHz 24-bit embedded audio signals in sync with the video clock. There is also a delay function for synchronization with video processing. The system offers an optional embed/de-embed card to allow eight channels of AES/EBU audio to be extracted or inserted into the HD-SDI signals.
Dolby E materials can be extracted or re-inserted using the FRC-7000’s embed/de-embed option then passed through or changed using an external Dolby E encoder/decoder. Dolby E is the surround sound compression system introduced by Dolby Laboratories that is becoming increasingly common in the broadcast production pipeline.
The unit also provides for genlock. Process control can be performed for the post-conversion video. For test signals, the unit has a color bar, ramp signals and 1 kHz audio output for signal checking. An alarm tally output indicates power supply, fan and temperature errors. The video level, chroma level, chroma phase, setup level, and clips can be adjusted to produce the optimal video quality.
[edit] FORMATT FILTERS
CURING HD HORRORS AT NAB 2007 (BOOTH #C5917)
It’s vital that actors, actresses and TV presenters look great on screen. But, as every DP knows, shooting HD, in all its high-resolution glory, can strike terror amongst the talent and start alarm bells ringing for make-up.
At NAB 2007, British filter manufacturer Formatt Filters will be show its range of best-selling HD filters, that are helping cure the horrors of high-definition production.
• HD Clear Soft – perfect for softening with minimal loss of detail and contrast
• HD Soft Gold Enhancing filters – subtle softening of the image with great skin tone enhancement
• HD Supersoft Gold Enhancing – the ultimate filters for softening, skin tone and facial enhancement, plus the removal of hard lines and blemishes.
• Brand new 4mm filters – Formatt’s filters have traditionally been different, in that they were only 3mm in thickness, plus a protective frame. Now the whole filter range is available in 4mm without a frame.
But don’t take Formatt’s word for it. Here’s what Roy Wagner ASC, DP on TV series House says:
“You know that Formatt filters are futureproof. They are a great asset to a cinematographer because we get paid to make people look good, and these filters definitely make people look good.”
